Capcom Fighting Evolution Brings Street Fighter And Darkstalkers Together On PS3

By Spencer . September 16, 2013 . 1:23am

Capcom will re-release Capcom Fighting Evolution as a downloadable PS2 Classic for PlayStation 3 on Tuesday. This crossover fighting game has characters from Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter III, Darkstalkers, and Red Earth (a fantasy fighting game).

The roster also includes Ingrid, an original character made for the canceled fighting game Capcom Fighting All-Stars, who uses energy attacks. I guess she’s technically a Street Fighter character now since she appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max for PSP.

What makes Capcom Fighting Evolution unique is the game mixes multiple battle systems… it also led to balancing problems. But, hey this is the only game Hauzer, a dinosaur like character, and the beastman Leo on a home console.

Where’s my ps2 disc of this game? Damn it! I remember seeing this game the 1st time, it was just a bunch of mix sprites.

  • disgaea36

seriously first mystic heroes now this? when are we going to get some decent ps2 classics especially some rpgs come on sony.

  • Demandred

  • hazelnut1112

    This game is terrible though.
Why would they want to rerelease this on PSN?
    Makes no sense.

    • AkuLord3

Cuz Capcom is running out of money and are SUPER DESPERATE

      • Demandred

Nah, Capcom seem to have their heads on right. How else would you explain their brilliant new scheme of releasing even more DLC!?

      • hazelnut1112

        I actually forgot about that.
Makes sense why they would release these.

      • hazelnut1112

        I actually forgot about that.
Makes sense why they would release these.

      • So… That news that they only have 150 Million plus bucks in their bank account spells they’re teetering in a financial deep doo-doo?

        • Yep. Two months ago, they had a stable $151+M. Now, their answer to regain the lost money is to heavily capitalize on re-releases and DLC. Especially so on the latter.

          • Well, hopefully they better come up with better and more profitable marketing strategy if they wish to survive in this dynamic industry—Especially ones that will attract and appeal consumers.

    • Istillduno

For casuals its “Lol this game has all the characters, awesome !!111” and I bet a fair few people who know what a horrible mess it is will buy it because it’s such a horrible mess, I know I’m tempted.

  • AkuLord3

    This game might be meh/bad but i like the fact that it has alot of old classic fighting characters like Red Earth/Warzard characters, Darkstalker characters that aren’t just Morrigan and Felicia and Alex. At least back then, they showed some love for those…ahhh i am myself sad ;w;

    Edit: Also Ingrid…YEAH

    • Slayven19

Yeah ingrid is what makes the game worth it stilll.

  • Solomon_Kano

I had this on PS2. Balance issues or no, I loved playing it for the Red Earth characters.

    • Hauzer’s standing light punch is adorably funny IMO.

  • Lionxie
  • Chaos_Knight

Hey Capcom! How about remaking that other fighting game instead? Yknow, the one you cancelled.

    • leingod

Which one? I’m at a loss.

      • Chaos_Knight

        Capcom Fighting All-Stars.

A crossover game with characters from Street Fighter, Final Fight, Rival Schools, Strider, Ingrid, along with original characters fighting in a 3D environment like in Tekken and Virtua Fighter.

        • leingod

Oh, I didn’t know about this one… and I’m a fighting game aficionado! The game itself looked meh, but the roster was awesome. Made me miss Rival Schools.

          • Chaos_Knight

I thought the game looked good. It’s just that the characters need better animations.

  • Oh-hoho… This is the Capcom fighting game that some accuse as a “Glorified MUGEN.” Played myself this game years ago, it was fun for a while.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Mugen is better anyway lol

      • Yeah, guess so. After all, In MUGEN you can readjust a character so it can be balanced. Heck, you can even remake this game in MUGEN with the character representations that you want per series. :p

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

yeah!, I even made my own fighter, Mugen never gets old.

        • d3v

Which is a horrible idea for a competitive fighting game.

  • Oh-hoho… This is the Capcom fighting game that some accuse as a “Glorified MUGEN.” Played myself this game years ago, it was fun for a while.

  • katamari damacy

All Capcom needs to do is take all the 2D sprites they have over the years, slap them all into one big fighting game without any resemblance of balance. Just like Marvel vs Capcom 2. THAT should have been Capcom Fighting Jam. Add ‘Grooves’ like Capcom vs SNK 2 and it would have been deep enough to qualify

    • Atmey

I am still trying to figure out why that game was popular, it was a good game, but I have no idea why.

    • Now THAT would’ve been Chaos!

    • You can do that kind of with MUGEN.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    I still own my ps2 copy….. :D

  • MrJechgo

    Yeah… ¬_¬

  • I ad this game on Ps2, too bad some stupid crack head stole the game and sold it for some drugs. :( Oh well, I’ll be looking at getting it this tuesday on Psn! Always had fun playing this game, people didn’t like it apparently cause of “Cardboard background, and characters in the backgrounds looking like cardboard” And a few balance issues here and there….. And Oh yeah… apparently Urien missing some combos was one reason. lol

  • D. Collins

I actually liked this game for the ps2. of course back then i didn’t really care for balancing issues. i enjoyed the music and just the characters in general.

    What? Console Mugen rerelease? :o

  • Longsun_Zhao

Its not a bad game, it just doesn’t have much to offer people who already own a bunch of classic Capcom fighting games.

Not to mention the small roster and stripped-down versions of characters. It’s worth $15 though, to see Guile piledrive a T-rex.

  • Capcom needs to go back 2d period ! This game might have been sorry but idea wasn’t ! Juri & C Viper in 2d needs to happen ….

  • d3v

The “balancing problems” of this game are overstated. Balance wise, it’s on par with most Capcom fighters. In other words, a dominant top tier (Leo, Anakaris, Urien) surrounded by a solid high tier (Jedah, Karin, Demitri, Hauzer, Kenji, Rose).

    • I agree with everything you just said. The US players just didn’t wanna get into this game because of their favorite characters missing some of their old combos, and the fact that the sprites weren’t redone into new ones, and how the characters and backgrounds looks like washed up “Cardboard” Apparently. And oh yeah, the so called “Balancing Problems” As you mentioned too. People mostly in the US never gaved the game a chance, unlike in Japan, where they at least played the game and tried to at least show what the game is capable of, people just gaved up on the game early on just because of stupid faulty reasons. The gameplay is fun, and I would at least recommend trying it out.

      • AkuLord3

…How do you know people in Japan or ANYWHERE else didn’t enjoy the game for those faults…also are you trying to help show the game is ok or just trollin?

        • I ain’t trolling. If you read the comment I made, I’m trying to get players to get the game and try it out. I know the game is FUN, and had played it in arcades and played it competitively ONCE. From experiences, the US players all hated it for those reasons and didn’t even wanna explore or play the game longer than 2 weeks. EVERYONE in the US stopped playing it in 2 weeks time. The Japanese players however gaved it a chance and actually made the game turned into a competitive game for 2 years and showed that the game wasn’t given a chance in the US until later years when the japanese players started to showcase the game MORE and than the US players decided to dish out the game AGAIN but not play it competitively but just did a combo video for it.

I like how Capcom said they were gonna stop doing fighting game rereleases after Darkstalkers Resurrection didn’t sell 32 Million units like they thought it would, then proceed to rerelease what it probably the worst fighting game they’ve ever made.

    • Slayven19

Well releasing this on psn isn’t going to cost them anything really because they aren’t changing anything just porting it. Still the game itself wasn’t even bad it just should have had more characters.

    • Mr. X

PS2 Classic releases are a bit random. IIRC, the publisher okays the games Sony can use (which they did a while ago) but don’t choose when it gets on the store.

It’s hardly a re-release, they don’t work on it, Sony does the work to get it functioning on PS3.

  • I love these old fighting games

  • fairysun

Capcom, you need to get back at making a fighting game that is not started with S and ended with Fighters.
You used to own a lot of fighting games(Darkstalkers, Rival School, etc.) back in the days, only rivaled by SNK.

    • Kelohmello

SF is the only one left that makes them money. Why would they bother with anything else?

  • Alberto Maytorena

And let me guess, when sells don’t go as expected, Capcom will think it’s not a good idea to make CFE2

    . . .

You know what? It’s perfect, I don’t want to see something like CFE again.

    Ingrid is best Street Fighter.
