Square Enix Still Interested In Bringing Final Fantasy Type-0 To The West

By Ishaan . September 17, 2013 . 2:33am

Speaking with US Gamer, Final Fantasy Agito producer Hajime Tabata said that the iPhone and Android game “will definitely be localized”. As previously reported, Square Enix recently filed a trademark for the game in Europe.

Additionally, Tabata also indicated that Square Enix are still considering bringing Final Fantasy Type-0, the PSP game which Agito is a spin-off of, to the west in some form. While he wouldn’t offer any guarantees, Tabata said that fan enthusiasm for the game has renewed Square Enix’s interest in bringing the game overseas.

Final Fantasy Agito is slated for release on iOS and Android platforms this winter in Japan. Further details regarding the game can be found here.

Don’t tease me, Square Enix, my poor heart can’t handle it.

    • SiliconNooB

Yoshida has been tweeting about this…

      • mockturtle

Yoda called, he wants his grammar back.

  • roydgriffin

Yes please! A thousand times yes!

A friend got me the japanese version, and while I can’t really read japanese (only hiragana and katakana, which really helped with some of the interfaces)
I had a lot of fun playing this, the battle system is really great and it’s fun to play all the different characters.

But at one point I just couldn’t continue, because I simply couldn’t figure out what I had to do.

So yes, I really need this!

  • Randgriz

And were still interested in playing it…
Lets play the waiting game – shall we?

    • yellowmage

[waits a while] Eh, the waiting game sucks. Let’s play Hungry Hungry Hippos!

  • tubers

“FF Type 0.. in some form to the West.”

If they release the PSP Type-0 for iOS and Android only, definitely buying the next gen iPad.

Who knows, maybe SE would feel charitable enough for making it an international VITA exclusive port. They’ve already given a lot of love on other platforms unlike the VITA.

    • malek86

Not sure why people, when asking for ports, feel the need to specify that they should be exclusive. Never understood what it is that makes a game more enjoyable if it’s not available on other platforms.

      • tubers

So it may grow uniquely by catering to the strength of a single platform with a certain gameplay/graphical standard.

An exclusive FF Type 0 could be a good “seed” for such.

Considering ports to various systems makes sure it;s considering the lowest common denominator.

One platform looking like it has shoehorned controls or one platform holding back another due to lack of built in controls.

A start for a VITA exclusive RPG from SE is something I’d consider to be very interesting. They’ve made a lot of great PSP exclusive software.

I doubt it’s such an absurd request specially that it stemmed out from a Sony handheld of w/c successor is severely under its shadow.

Don’t worry though. This will never happen. It won’t be a VITA only game for sure. It doesn’t seem sound for maximum profiteering.

        • malek86

Your arguments are debatable, and in the particular case of Type-0, I just don’t see the point. That game was made on PSP, a platform which didn’t have a second stick or more than 6 buttons. There’s literally nothing that would take advantage of the PSV.

    • I don’t know why Ishaan left this part out, but Tabata said he’s still interested in a digital release on PSN. Which rules out a mobile port. And it rules out a Vita port because otherwise they’d be interested in releasing it physically as well.

      • yomachaser

How does it rule out a mobile port? They could do both and that would rake in waaaaay more money.

    • SiliconNooB

I’d just be happy with a PSN release of the PSP version…

  • konsama

So finally reconsidering bringing the only good FF made in years?

I don’t get how they never got in their minds bringing Type-0 stateside, for it wasn’t just an awesome portable game, but a really good game overall, in gameplay, story, graphics for who cares bout that and an incredible OST. It was a total blast when i played and it’s a real shame people missed it and are still missing out for reasons like language barrier and other limitations for certain people.

    • Randy Marsh

Whoa, whoa only good FF made in years? Now that is a little debatable. *cough* Final Fantasy XIV: A realm Reborn and Dimensions *cough* *cough*

And why they never brought it over is really simple to answer. You see when Type-0 was announced in 2008 for the PSP, the PSP market was in good standing and the piracy scene was kind of slow and not as threatening to sells. Now fast forward to 2011, where the PSP market was on life support, hardly any games were being released on the system except niche games, the games that were release on the system at the time were being illegally downloaded in the West badly. In addition, Square had also realized that some of their PSP games sells were lacking in the West during this time, according to some reports I read Dissidia 012 and Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection had less than expected sells. Now don’t get me wrong, they sold pretty good for late gen PSP games, but not what they were expecting. This is due to two reasons and they are the exact reasons I just stated. Oh Complete Collection was siphoned off the internet like mad!

And I might as well add this to those saying “bwing PSN release!”, a PSN release would have not been the solution either, since games released on the PSN were still and albeit even easier to pirate. So yeah, that kicked that idea out the window. I’m looking at you Final Fantasy III Portable! >_>

But I do agree with you wholeheartedly about the game, the game is a total blast, I put in a good 120 hours in 2 playthroughs of the game; mind you Randy pays to import games people. It is indeed a shame people have missed out it. But hopefully with all the recent interviews about the localization being still considered and Agito being trademarked for EU, perhaps we shall have ourselves a some info during the end of the week, hopefully, maybe, yeah come on Square work with me here. :/

      • Nana

        ff14 isn’t a good game though, it’s a pretty mediocre mmo.

And really, I have the japanese Type-0. It’s definitely the best Final Fantasy since FF6. I even consider it to be the only good FF since FF6.

    • Herok♞

Ok that is a completely subjective opinion, we all like different games in the FF series and no one can really say which ones are and aren’t good as a blanket statement, I like the 2 games in the FF13 series and I really dislike 12 and another game in the series that will remain unnamed. To me 12 and the other game aren’t very good but many people will say otherwise. So like I said subjective when I tried the Type-0 demo(not sure which it was maybe the first one) I said this is crap and moved on, you on the other hand would say Type-0 isn’t crap. Basically stating an opinion doesn’t make it an absolute, instead of Type-0 is the only good FF game made in years(which draws vile from the community I can guarantee that’s why you have the dislikes, since the rest of your comment is fine.) You could have said that Type-0 is my favorite FF game in years which is an opinion which you have the right to, I might not share it but heck if I can’t tell you to have it.

  • Fox

How stupid. The longer they sit on their asses “considering” it, the more the market for the game shrinks.

    • tubers

Bet they’re just waiting for more people to transition towards mobile and release it there.. with IAPs and paywalled chapters/segments.

      • NewestType

The cell phone model and psp model are totally different. You are highlighting features present in mobile. I am just happy to see something positive coming from the mobile industry. Spurring the possibility of a PSN release. Not only that, but just the fact the company is now publicly affirming there position is also a step in the right direction.

On the other hand. You are going to have people whining about it not being out yet while completely negating the key factors of Squares financial status at the time, the psp/vita transition and vita and psp’s revenue at time it would have been released. Or even the part where Square had recorded localized audio and HD assets for the game.

    • zaidandzhadow

Like Megaman Legends 3, now nobody wants it.

  • Dede Ogbe

think after years of listening to these sort of words has taught me to never EVER trust SE and their promises. Until they come out with a official announcement i wouldn’t hold my breath

  • Go2hell66

    too little too late

  • Tienron

what would make sqaure enix think otherwise? but in all fairness they wouldn’t release it on psp cause we they would literally not make any money off it….

    • Shady Shariest

They are aiming to release it via PSN, which will make it available for Vita, too :3

      • TheExile285

        and Vita TV

  • Shady Shariest

CONSIDERING?!! Knife, where is my knife, i wan’t to end that consideration!

  • 3PointDecoupage

I’ll start holding my breath now.

    • Anime10121

      DON’T!!! You’ll die :(

      • Many already have.

What was it that they believed that was ‘not interesting’ about the title before? The fact it was on the PSP and it’s riddled with piracy?

I’m betting that this is it. Would probably take some time to port it to a console that isn’t rife with piracy for their tastes (yet).

      • Steven Higgins

No he won’t. He’ll pass out before then.

  • Bobby Jennings

Not enough Square. I want you to actually do it.

    • Aurizen

YEAH!! they better! They keep trolling fans

  • rekka_zan

  • interesting. I think this may have to do with curtain call having type-0 songs in it.

    • The original Theatrhythm already featured a Type-0 song.

  • Dagobert

God damn it, bring it already. Or better yet, remake it for the Vita and localize that.

  • School Idol Addict

Well PSP is really dead now, so i guess that’s out of question.
Vita probably isn’t really selling enough for them to consider porting Type-0 on Vita, so that’s leave mobile…
Well they could also try going the HD route and release a HD remaster on PS3 and Vita at the same time, a bit like FFX/FFX-2 HD

    • TheExile285

Vita TV………. or hell just throw it on 3DS. I’d take that over Agito.

    • It’s certainly PSP. Tabata said on the USgamer article he’s still interested in a digital release on PSN. I don’t know why Ishaan left that part out.

      • Ronldbx6

When you say “digital release on PSN”, does that mean I can play it on my PS3? Just clarifying because my PSP bricked and I don’t plan on getting a vita right now.

        • Kevadu

No, it’s still a PSP game. That doesn’t magically change just because it’s put on PSN…

Though the Vita plays PSP games just fine.

    • ZEROthefirst

There’s not going to be any ports for the game. If it does end up seeing a Western release, then it’s going to be a digital release. With how easy it is to pirate games on UMD, and considering how “well” PSP games do in the West because of this, it’d be stupid for them not to do digital at this point (could be wrong and the game does well in sales physically, it’s a FF title so who knows).

      • LightZero

They would get the most money if they do a HD re-release for the PS3/Vita or a 3DS release. A niche group of hardcore fans isn’t enough. They need to release to a system that will get the most money.

        • ZEROthefirst

Agreed, while I don’t see this happening anytime soon if they did end up doing this, it would appeal to a larger audience and earn them more money.

  • Junko Enoshima

I think I went weak in the knees.

  • Raze

    Please do…

    It’s better than nothing…

  • JustThisOne

This is positive, I suppose. The problem is, though, people have been hearing about consideration comments like these for awhile. I don’t know how much credibility these words have anymore. Square Enix’s reputation hasn’t fully recovered yet, even with the recent FF15/KH3 revival.

If they’re really going to go through with this, they’re going to need one helluva marketing campaign to rehype this title.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Good news, but still baffling. After close to 3 years of western fans asking/begging/yelling/etc., they’re now taking it seriously? How can I take you seriously this time, SE?

    • It’s been almost two years, not three. They should have released it digitally on PSP a year ago like FFIII if you ask me.

      • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Even though it was released 2 years, people have wanted it to come west since it was first revealed. So 3 years is pretty close

Edit: So FF AgitoXIII was revealed in October 2008. Went dark, then was reintroduced as FF Type-0 in January 2011. And finally released in October 2011. I guess my original post was aimed at the reintroduction as Type-0. Almost 3 years.

    • yomachaser

Because with the coming release of the mobile game you a lot of you guys love to hate on they finally have a legit reason to spend money on type-0 for the west.

  • CirnoLakes

Brace for Siliconera going nuts with desire.

  • TheExile285

Don’t play with my emotions SE…………..

Don’t care about the mobile game, but Type-0 is a day one buy for me, physical or DD only. Literally threw my wallet at my laptops screen when I read the article title.

    • Pdugna

yeah question….whats up the tower like icon next to your name now?

      • TheExile285

Its a Rook symbol from Chess

    • yomachaser

The mobile game is why you might get the psn one so you might want to reconsider.

      • TheExile285

If there is a “buy the complete game” option, i will buy it and just never play it

        • yomachaser

I bet you that would help type 0 get westernized.

  • ManiaxFR

I don’t care how I will play it, a digital PSP game for my Vita would be great, but if SE is to release it, I hope it will release soon and not as a HD remix like FFX which is always delayed and frustrates people so much.

    • Steven Higgins

How can it be delayed when they never announced a release date to begin with?

  • fyi1191

    “…he wouldn’t offer any guarantees…”

    *puts on shades*

  • Jesse

If you’re going to bring it over, please do so; I’m getting tired of hearing about it.

  • Byas

The cellphone spin-off will definitely come but the real game is just “maybe”?
    What the hell, SE?!

    • Dede Ogbe

I know right? At this stage I think it makes more sense to view them as a mobile phone games developer than a console one. It helps make sense of thier increasingly absurd logic

      • Yause

That’s the direction of the Japanese game industry. I think many people envision a split. Console games aimed at overseas markets. Mobile games for Japan.

In recent years, the dedicated handhelds kinda represented a transition.

    • TheExile285

objectively speaking, mobile games make a lot more money than PSP games and the install base is like x20 bigger.

that being said, this is Type-0! fans have been begging non-stop for it since day one. they should have just localized it after it came out IMO -_-

      • I really don’t get the point on an overseas release of Agito without Type-0. For me the logical thought should be: ok, we released Type-0, it done great, now we’re going to release Agito as well. How they suppose the game is going to sell well, considering Final Fantasy fanbase is mostly on consoles, not on mobile? I’d probably would like to play the mobile game IF I had played Type-0, to know more about the world and characters.

    • almostautumn

And it’s the wrong friggin’ one to boot!

      *Before Crisis*

  • Daniel Williams

Ill believe it when I see it

  • 하세요

Most of my friends have forgotten all about this game at this point. It’s just too late if you ask me. It was a fun game, don’t get me wrong.

  • joemari5

“Tabata said that fan enthusiasm for the game has renewed Square Enix’s interest in bringing the game overseas.”

So how long was it til they realized that? Oh, I know, almost two years! Two freaking years! Fans have been talking about this since before the Japanese release.

  • AzureRyuujin

Western players want the original game.

SE, are you bad enough dudes to bring Type-0 west?

  • Vita/PS3 remaster would be great. Which is why they will port it to mobile phones instead.
I have little interests in mobile phone gaming, well I’ll get one when I get one but I rather have Type-0 so hopefully they keep their promise.

  • D. Collins

Just make it digital download. you don’t have to translate it anything just have English subtitles

  • Adam Zaorski

I want type-0 on my Vita so badly…

But i don’t belive a word square is saying, not, one, single, word.

  • AlteisenX

I’ll believe it when I actually see it.

  • Ixbran

considering the fact that Agito has a character creation system, I find it far more interesting than Type-0. Its just a shame it’ll be on phones.

who knows, maybe the western release will have it put on the PSP and Vita as download from PSN.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Chaos Rings was just recently released as a PSMobile title, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility to do the same with this one (or the list of their other mobile games).

      • yomachaser

Will people be happy with that much wait though? PS mobile got Chaos Rings one so their 2 whole games behind mobile and I’m feeling another CR will come in the next year.

Agito could come to PSmobile but god “when” would it come?

  • Randgriz

Type-0 is still commerically viable even being a PSP title – if it released digital PSP PSVITA download owners could still benefit – and not to mention theres TV outs for both PSP AND Vita now. So those wanting to play on TV can.
If it released retail too it would only hit the PSP markets which has a huge install base by now.

    • LightZero

What huge install base? The PSP is dead in the west. The PSP is slowly dying in Japan.

      • Randgriz

Im sure alot of people who still own PSP’s who bought crisis core will go out and buy FF type-0. Install base means there are lots of PSPs in homeowners houses and i think thats still true.

        • almostautumn

I dunno, man. I don’t mean to start a war, but FF13, and S-E’s bizarre decision to make that into a trilogy and primary project has genuinely diminshed the Final Fantasy name for soooooooo many gamers. Crisis Core really was a system seller— but I don’t think Type-0 would be as well recieved at this point. S-E has really tanked particularly in the console scene, and so all those gamers who bought a PSP just for Crisis Core/FF games but have since experienced all the pretty much awful console games they’ve released? I don’t think they’ll really care about Type-0 all that much.

  • Pedro Furtado

If this results in Vita port + trophies for both American and Japan I’ll be overjoyed

    • almostautumn

…trophies? What do valueless tokens have to do with one of the most critically acclaimed games to be released for an entire system potentially being localized?

      • Pedro Furtado

Nothing, really. I just like them. I’m planning on playing it in Japanese once I get better so that way localization would also benefit me.

  • Aristides

They better launch the game on PSP or at the very least a Vita version of some sort. I’ll be pissed if the title ends up exclusively on other platforms…

  • XiaomuArisu

Just give me Type-0 vita alreadyXD

  • Nanaki

It’s great to see they actually noticed the fans pushing for the game’s actual release—now it seems “eventual” again, at this point.
I think the possibility of a Playstastion Network release should’ve been mentioned in this article as it was on US Gamer.

    • Bobby Jennings

Agreed. I got the rest of the information from NeoGAF

  • Brandonmkii

I’m still hoping they find a way to bring it westward. I’m just having a hard time imagining a scenario where it’s profitable. PS3 is probably the best bet at this point.

    • yomachaser

The more I muse about this I think they may shift it to mobile too as that would make it a series on the same hardware. It would make sense right?

  • Godmars

If that the case, why are they putting out the sequel first? Putting actual effort localizing it while only considering offering the other. Nevermind that they’re talking about two separate platforms.

Are they going to wait to see how one sells before releasing the other?

    • MrSirFeatherFang

      Agito is a prequel…

  • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

WHAT?! So you mean that the localization process hasn’t begun?
I wonder how much is the whole localization process cost… cause this game will surely pay for that.

  • SirRichard

I’m sure Sony would kill for a Final Fantasy to sell the Vita with in the West, Square, all you have to do is ask for help.

    • TheExile285

Actually, I think Sony is the one who should be asking

      • LightZero

With the way the 3DS is dominating the world in sales, Sony would be smart to ask for SE to do this for the Vita. SE is going to go to whichever system that would get the most money. Right now the iOS, 3DS, and PS3 are the money makers.

        • TheExile285

you have no idea how much it pains me to see that you listed iOS as #1 but its not like i can say you are wrong :(

        • yomachaser

Actually the money makers are (in order) iOS,Android,Nintendo,Sony for handheld stuff.

    • J_Joestar

They should just do what Nintendo is doing with Bravely Default and offer to publish the localization themselves.

  • Sapitntapit

Didn’t Crisis Core do well in the west? And wasn’t that PSP?

    • It was also released more than 5 years ago, when the PSP was very alive.

    • Anime10121

That was in the beginning of the PSPs life cycle, before its games were pirated to hell and back.

  • Göran Isacson

Nothing that can be said here the Backstreet Boys haven’t already said.

  • $61526767

would like it if they ACTUALLY bring it here.. been waiting for a localization since forever! I’m not sure if i like being teased.. but at las, I shall wait.

  • “In Some Form”

When it also becomes localized as an iOS game, people are gonna loose it XD

    • TheExile285

      not funny man….

      • J_Joestar

        *loos at SE*
        Wouldn’t be surprising though…

      • Lolz

    • yomachaser

I didn’t even think of that! The interbutts would implode but that would be more in line with their current thinking.

    • Touma

And on that day, a lot of people wanted square enix’s head (s?)…or atleast the person who made the decision XD.

    • new_tradition

If they bring it to Android, I’d probably cave and get it…

On sale anyways, like all other games I’ve bought from the Playstore >_>

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

I’ll believe it when I see it, it’s been too long~.

  • Erick Jahzeel Maradiaga Mairen

bring type 0 for psvita on hd, but please dont release it on smartphones…

  • This is great news. After FFXIV has restored my faith in the Final Fantasy franchise, this news is more than welcome. I will definitely be getting into Agito when it is localized, and will be among those hoping and praying that Type-0 does get brought over here. Very excited.

  • never say never

  • AndyLC

I hope it’s also on PSN, with some way to play online with friends.

  • Pfheh! If you’re not bringing it anytime soon stop teasing it again SE.

  • Valtiel Ikari

    Dear Square-enix,

My vita says, that it would love to have Final Fantasy Type-0 in it’s library, graphical upgrades are not really needed since it already is good looking, but wouldn’t be bad if you want to upgrade it, but Vita says is good enough like it is, just add dual stick compatibility, please, don’t break my vita’s heart.

  • Not holding my breath, this was brought up before and yet we’re seeing it again

They’d have to upscale it to the VITA if anything

  • Shane Guidaboni

It’s hard to even care about this game anymore.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

This reminds me to that Phoenix Wright game Capcom was going to release but in the end they didn’t. I hope Type 0 is actually released so that I will feel more excited.

    • TheExile285

Capcom hasn’t localized all the PW games?

      • Slayven19

I think he means that miles edgeworth investigations 2 game.

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

I have an idea, release it digitally and don’t US voice actors. Leave the original in and add the English Script that was translated years ago. I know it is finished because my friend that works as a a translator for SEJapan said they were working on it years ago and the game can’t be so long that it takes this many years. You could have the game ready in a month or less doing this. Atelier Totori Plus sold really well as a digital only release. Make it Vita compatible naturally.

  • Arcana Wiz

There aren’t any, please be excited? It’s sad that they are dropping their catch phrase.

  • I think if Squenix is going to release it as a digital download on PSN, you shouldn’t expect an HD remake of it, since a lot more money are necessary to make it happen. I would be pleased if they just release the (alrerady localized) PSP version on PSN and make it available to PSVita/TV and PS3 owners.

  • Zangetsu777

If they want Final Fantasy Type-0 to sell in the west. They will need to bring it to PSVITA. And they should make a Black/Red LE PSVITA 2000 bundle to go with it.

  • GH56734

Considering Type-0 was confirmed at multiple times to be under localization… this doesn’t mean much.

  • Ronldbx6

My psp bricked, I guess it’s time to get it repaired.

  • So Type-0 is finally coming to the US, yes!!! I hope they can make a enhanced edition for Vita in mind.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

It’s not finally coming. Also, remember how many times they said it was coming over? At least two times. So I wouldn’t hold my breath unless they give an official date. That said, I’d be just fine playing the PSP version on my PSV, I don’t need an enhanced version and the PSP game looked amazing anyway~.

      • Well I think this one could be the real deal. But as you said, let’s wait and find out.

  • Nate

I think it will come over. A little while back when sony’s third party manager asked fans to tweet what games they want on vita. He said on Up At Noon on ign.com that Type 0 was one of the highest on the list.

  • Derek E Nay

    Then make it happen…

  • DrakeClawfang

Then do it already you damn cockteasers.

  • Niceneasy92

What they need to do is get a hold of the team Sony put together specifically for this kind of stuff. The same guys bringing Borderlands 2 to the Vita.

  • roockie112

I know I and other people said we don’t want it anymore after the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong wait but if they officially say this will come out on certain date I would still jizz my pants and buy it

  • l777l

I wouldn’t mind getting to know the particular thought processes behind these (in)decisions.

  • new_tradition

If they release it digitally, it better darn well work on the PSP :/

EDIT: If they bring it on another platform, then I think it’ll still get released in Japan first. I’m not sure how many games came over in English in a format that didn’t also release in Japan.

I hope to God they don’t interpret Fan Interest as an iOS/Android Port of Type-0.

I want to be able to play it on my Vita, so I’m hoping for it to be put up on PSN.

So why would the Siliconera article then say “In some form” and leave it so ambiguous? If I can’t get the full story on Siliconera, why bother reporting it here?

Physical and Digital release would be best.

How cute, they want to localize it when the fan translation is supposedly around 80% complete (still confused whether the translation is or isn’t being made). A bit too late for mere considering…
