How Dark Souls II Makes Death More Punishing

By Kris . September 18, 2013 . 6:02pm

Because players spent a lot of time running around safely dead in the original Dark Souls, Dark Souls II changes things up a bit with new punishments. The more you die while undead, the more your total health will decrease all the way down to 50% of your maximum health and the more your character’s image will degrade. If you continue dying while already dead your character’s skin will start to decompose and hair will fall out.

This undead player has a lock on its HP gauge.

Whereas the original Dark Souls required humanity points to restore a dead character’s humanity, in Dark Souls II, you can return to your original, attractive form and full amount of health by using an item called a Human Effigy.

Another surprising change to life as a dead man is that the dead can now be invaded. Coupled with the loss of health that comes with multiple deaths, it seems pretty intimidating. Don’t worry though, that’s what the Way of the Blue covenant is for. If you’re a member of this covenant and you get invaded, you can call in a Blue Sentinel, a more skilled, powerful player wearing a certain item in their game, to take care of the invader for you.

Dark Souls II comes out on March 11 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with the PC version slated for release shortly afterwards.

  • Symbol de Au

The original game required Humanity not souls to revive to a human.

    • Lightthrower

The original game (Demon’s Souls) required Stone of Ephemeral Eye, killing a boss, killing an invader or helping a player kill a boss.

      • Symbol de Au

Nice try but what the part I was referring to said was “the original Dark Souls required souls to restore a dead character’s humanity”. #I knew someone would say what you just said.

        • Lightthrower

          Muahahahaha :-D

  • andref

Sweet, I’m so glad there is a punishment for being undead even if it takes a few deaths to occur. My wish has been answered woohoo

  • Saculogir

Half HP? Looks like we’re stepping back into Demon’s Souls( along with the dual wielding coming back too). Nice, that was something I always loved about the first game, how it just got harder the worse you did. Made it so that the only way to beat the game was to become player. I cannot wait for all the soul-crushing brutality!

  • konsama

Oh boy with my spectacular K/D ratio of 1/30 i can’t expect this as good news for me. T_T

Tho the lower HP, nice touch from demons souls.

  • Ferrick

damn… the more you die as an undead, the more zombie-like you will look, that’s an awesome touch there

    • Godman

And this will prevent carelessness as an undead

      • Ferrick

        but that won’t prevent 1hp-runners =D

  • Godman

Blue Covenant looks appealing, in Dark Souls I was part Darkwraith Covenant and made many players miserable. It’d be nice to help them out for a change >:)

  • Kyle Fedora

Oh hey guys, let’s make an already beyond stupidly hard series even harder! In fact they’re just making it more stupid.

    • Magus KilIer

The probably had the guys who didn’t want an easy mode in mind when they implemented this

    • Rohan Viajar

I wonder why this surprises you.
They said they were going to make it harder, and the game became popular for it’s difficulty. So, it all makes sense.

    • Ferrick

dark souls is not even hard to begin with, you just want everything to be served to you on a silver platter, don’t you ?

    • MrRobbyM

I think someone isn’t very patient.

    • MrRobbyM

I think someone isn’t very patient.

  • SlickRoach

God, I haven’t even made it halfway through the original Demon’s Souls yet. If I play this I’ll be at 50% HP before the 1st boss!

  • ChiffonCake

Hey guys, EpicNameBro put up a video talking about his impressions about the beta. He’s got some interesting stuff here, including changes to stats, elemental damage, rolls and parries, and so on.

  • dahuuuundge

    Cling Ring anyone?

  • Cameron Ward

Wait until they announce the feature where if you take a single step anywhere, you die instantly

  • Pockystix

so we blues will be blue balling the reds of invasion kills?

  • andref

Supposedly the GI article mentions an additional feature for this game that may interest people who don’t know, but according to the author, summoned allies have a time limit in which they can aid players that is depleted when they kill enemies

  • Logan Moll

Invaded even while dead… oh Lord! lol

  • LegoBaka

    Guess I’ll be playing offline.

    • Androu1

Me too, because my connection is useless. It would be a waste of time for everyone involved.

In Dark Souls 1, when people try to invade me, I see the fog walls blocking my path but the other player never even shows up in my world. It’s so very very sad.

  • Ivan Junior

    Awesomeness. That’s all. Day One.

  • Vadim Merzhey

I want them bring back sin system along with “secret police” covenant.

  • Göran Isacson

Interesting. Nice way to show that you not only punish players but ALSO help them, with that whole Blue Covenant. One hopes that they make it so that Blue Covenant players can’t turn dick and just attack the player that summoned them afterwards. Griefers are everywhere, after all.

  • Kid Kuma

Can’t wait still wish there was a ps4 version so I could Stream and take screenshots in a game worth doing so :(
