How Dark Souls II Makes Death More Punishing

Because players spent a lot of time running around safely dead in the original Dark Souls, Dark Souls II changes things up a bit with new punishments. The more you die while undead, the more your total health will decrease all the way down to 50% of your maximum health and the more your character’s image will degrade. If you continue dying while already dead your character’s skin will start to decompose and hair will fall out.

Whereas the original Dark Souls required humanity points to restore a dead character’s humanity, in Dark Souls II, you can return to your original, attractive form and full amount of health by using an item called a Human Effigy.

 

 

Another surprising change to life as a dead man is that the dead can now be invaded. Coupled with the loss of health that comes with multiple deaths, it seems pretty intimidating. Don’t worry though, that’s what the Way of the Blue covenant is for. If you’re a member of this covenant and you get invaded, you can call in a Blue Sentinel, a more skilled, powerful player wearing a certain item in their game, to take care of the invader for you.

Dark Souls II comes out on March 11 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with the PC version slated for release shortly afterwards.

    The original game required Humanity not souls to revive to a human.

      The original game (Demon’s Souls) required Stone of Ephemeral Eye, killing a boss, killing an invader or helping a player kill a boss.

    Half HP? Looks like we’re stepping back into Demon’s Souls( along with the dual wielding coming back too). Nice, that was something I always loved about the first game, how it just got harder the worse you did. Made it so that the only way to beat the game was to become player. I cannot wait for all the soul-crushing brutality!

    Blue Covenant looks appealing, in Dark Souls I was part Darkwraith Covenant and made many players miserable. It’d be nice to help them out for a change >:)

      They said they were going to make it harder, and the game became popular for it’s difficulty. So, it all makes sense.

    Supposedly the GI article mentions an additional feature for this game that may interest people who don’t know, but according to the author, summoned allies have a time limit in which they can aid players that is depleted when they kill enemies

      Me too, because my connection is useless. It would be a waste of time for everyone involved.

      In Dark Souls 1, when people try to invade me, I see the fog walls blocking my path but the other player never even shows up in my world. It’s so very very sad.

    Interesting. Nice way to show that you not only punish players but ALSO help them, with that whole Blue Covenant. One hopes that they make it so that Blue Covenant players can’t turn dick and just attack the player that summoned them afterwards. Griefers are everywhere, after all.
