Steins;Gate Up For Pre-Order; Will Have ESRB Rating

By Ishaan . September 21, 2013 . 4:10pm

JAST USA will be releasing Steins;Gate in English, and the game is up for pre-order now. Two versions are available—a physical limited edition and a download edition. The limited edition includes the game, user manual, original fanbook and Future Gadget Lab member badges with a display box.

The contents of the fanbook will be announced at a later date, JAST say. Additionally, if you pre-order the physical limited edition, you’ll also get a free download copy at launch, which you won’t have to wait for. The physical edition of the game costs $59.95, while the download edition costs $39.95.

More interesting is the fact that the image above has an ESRB “rating pending” logo on it. It looks like, following in MoeNovel’s footsteps, JAST intend to have Steins;Gate rated by the ESRB. Perhaps we’ll see it show up on Steam one day, similar to Higurashi: When they Cry.

Thanks to James and Chris for the heads up!

    • Keksus

Got these badges for 1500 Yen in Japan this Spring.

    • Dianatos

I almost want it for the same reason. Finally, my HOUOUIN KYOUMA cosplay would be complete!

      • Niyari

        that’s so cool, you sonofabitch~

  • MellowMadman11

    very cool.

  • The Japanese Steam invasion might finally happen. There’s a neat mock up floating around where Steam has lot’s of doujin games and of course eroge.

    • Kai2591

      That would be…interesting :)
May I see those mock ups please?

  • Luis Es.

I saw the anime for this and really liked it. So i’m going to be getting this game. Is there any guides out there for all the routes? Or is it easy enough to just get all the routes yourself?

    • Wappuli

There are basically only 2 routes and there are guides for them.
Aside from those 2 routes, there are 3 extra endings, but those are really easy to figure out by yourself.

    • greeeed

      Every girl have ending

  • doubleO7

Quick question. I’ve never bought a game from JAST before. Do they sell their games through other sites too like Amazon and Rightstuf, or only their own site?

    • Luis Es.

Jlist is also selling the game for the same prices from the looks of it.

      • M’iau M’iaut

JList and JAST are all part of Peter’s companyverse. RightStuf is pretty consistent about selling the titles although sometimes with a little bit of delay from JASTs releases. The counterbalance is, they will often discount the games and also put them on even bigger sale from time to time.

Did notice the MG hard copies had left their site at last look. Just hope that means MG is in between print runs and not a decision to change availability. Having a regular storefront like RS is important IMO.

        • winsantz

From what I gather, MangaGamer is moving towards handling their own distribution, having previously contracted it out to J-List, but technical issues have delayed things and right now the only place you can buy MangaGamer hard copies is at a convention.

(edit: now that I check J-List still has some, but Right Stuf specifically cited issues with getting stuff in stock as their reason for puliing MG titles: )

          (see this forum thread: )

          • M’iau M’iaut

Not the best news given their recent announcement the Innocent Grey titles were going to get hard copies. Whatever loader MG uses for their digital titles likes to set off most anti-virus programs.

All the ero companies have been too insular in how they get their products to consumers. Sales at cons are great I am sure, but do nothing to grow the market. One can’t separate the wheat from the chaff on the websites unless again they know what they are looking at and plenty of folks won’t get near the sites with the way they are organized.

          • winsantz

I assume that they’ll be making their hard copies available to third-party resellers again once they have their ducks in a row, it’s just taking longer than planned. That said, MG having no retail distribution for months on end isn’t exactly confidence inspiring either…

  • SupaPhly

    what about Chaos;Head, JAST?

You said there would be Choas;Head!

    • Keksus

No they didn’t. They mentioned the possibility and suddenly everybody thought they will do it and halted fan translations.

      • SupaPhly

They got the license for the game, they halted the fan translation during it’s editing stage, and even tweeted several times about releasing the game in less than a year

        • Brandonmkii

I don’t remember them “halting” the fan-translation, as much as it was that they were throwing around the idea of using the existing translation work as a foundation for the official version, so the patches, etc were taken offline to support the official release. Besides, the game is pretty awful.

          • Lynx

The original VN isn’t awful at all.

Are you perhaps confusing it with the terrible anime adaptation?

          • British_Otaku

The anime is awful? It seemed to have quite a fanbase or following, or maybe their standards are low because of not seeing the visual novel first?

          • supervamp

even steins gate’s anime was nothing compared to the vn

          • Brandonmkii

No, I’ve played the VN. But it was very “meh” compared to other things, steins;gate included.

          • Lynx

And that’s where we disagree then.

I personally enjoyed CH more than SG.

CH was second to R;N in my enjoyment but equal to the second SG VN though.

        • Jast did not stop the fan translation, the team decide to stop the translation for possible official release

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

The full fan translation is out there, and not that hard to find. I know it’s not the same thing as an official release…

      • Kilicool64

The fan-patch was released back when the scripts were still unedited. Not to mention the translator has since revised his translation since he was unhappy with it. So the official release will have a significantly better translation.

  • Brandonmkii

Aw man, I hate places that charge full price for pre-orders. Oh well, pretty much need this.

    • lurkingsalt

Just so you know also has the pre-order up and they don’t charge your credit card until the item ships.

  • Lucius

Time to experience Kyouma’s Mad Scientist craziness again.

  • ChiffonCake

God, Steins;Gate on Steam… I can only dream.

  • JustThisOne

I’m… I’m kind of stoked to see the ESRB rating. They usually have such interesting things to say.

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

It’s probably going to be rated T.

      • JustThisOne

Probably, yeah. But I’m talking about that write up that it usually comes with. It’s usually (likely unintentionally) comical. For example, here’s Final Fantasy VII’s:

This is a role-playing game in which players embark on a quest to prevent an evil corporation from destroying the world. As players explore this fantasy realm, they can use melee weapons and magical attacks to engage in turn-based combat with various enemies (e.g., human-like characters, giant insects, snake monsters, biomechanical creatures); damage is indicated by a loss of hit points. Cutscenes include additional instances of violence: soldiers shooting at unarmed men; characters getting slashed/impaled with a sword in slow motion. A handful of environments also depict bloodstained floors and walls. The game contains suggestive innuendo in the dialogue during a bathtub sequence (e.g., “Bubby! So you’re the intimate type, eh?” and “Why don’t you stick around and play a bit? Daddy’s so lonely . . .”). During the course of the game, a goddess-like character is dressed in a low-cut top that displays moderate amounts of cleavage. The words “jacka*s,” “goddamn,” and “sh*t” appear in dialogue.

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

I’d post the Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 and the Killer Is Dead rating summaries but they have to be seen to be believed. But at least they aren’t as ridiculous as the australians ones with their descriptions such as HIGH IMPACT SEXUAL VIOLENCE and STRONG HUNTING VIOLENCE

          • Notquitesure?

You’re referring to ps vita atelier totori right, i honestly dont know how they rated that R considering original ps3 release was PG.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

Actually I Spit On Your Grave, A Serbian Film, Cannibal Holocaust and I think Salo also have the same warning. How could they rate Atelier Totori (And possibly Saints Row IV) with the same rating as those films? I have no fucking idea.

          • JustThisOne

            there’s an esrb rating app

Now I can read these on the go! I am totally getting it.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

The most hilarious ones can only be accessed through in-app purchases.

          • JustThisOne

W-wait… are you joking? You’re joking right? Because I actually really want this app. xD

EDIT: If it’s true though, they’d probably make a killing. :P

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

I’m just kidding but they would become millionaires. Lets not forget rating board members get ridiculously high paychecks (See the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, it’s unbelievable who they hire to rate movies since most of them are soccer moms and priests so my guess is that the ESRB works similarly).

          • JustThisOne

Yessss. First then I do when I get back home is get this baby on my phone. *__*

  • Robbyfishersora

Will do my part to support it.

  • Junko Enoshima

On my Christmas wishlist now ;)

    • herolove

Well you can preorder it but you won’t have it by Christmas(this year).
This is from J-list latest newsletter: “The game is scheduled for release in winter 2014.”

      • Junko Enoshima

On the Jast website, it says winter 2013-2014.

      • doubleO7

Technically, winter extends into February of next year. I don’t think they mean December 2014.

      • biskmater

That is if JAST can produce something at a decent speed, I love their products, the waiting, not so much.

  • HitagiHanekawa

    Thanks *crying

  • luckgandor

Original fanbook and a member badge? My wallet is crying.

    • Blick Winkel

Not one, but TWO member badges, actually (if you know the story, you should know why two are included).

  • AkiraScare

so wanna support this game… hopefully they localize way more vn in na (^_^)

  • Slayven19

    Will pick this up.

  • EtherealEarth

    JASTusa’s shipping doesn’t support the country I live in (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

*Time to do a more extensive search on the Internet for a physical copy*

    • Kevadu

I don’t think a more extensive search is going to net you much. JAST USA doesn’t even sell their games through traditional retailers. They’re too niche. J-List (which I’m pretty sure is related to JAST in some way…they use the same payment system, anyway) is about the only other place you’ll find it.

Of course you can always get a download copy.

      • Mr_SP

But… The badges! The badges are desirable!

      • EtherealEarth

        OMG, J-List works wonder! ┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ)

        Thank you ><

        • Testsubject909

Sadly J-List’s shipping is a huge ripoff.

10$ for no tracking and no insurance with a 3 to 6 week period.

Or a minimum of 35$ for tracking and insurance with a shipping period of 1 to 2 weeks I think.

Meanwhile at JastUSA’s site, shipping first priority costs 7.50$…

But if you have no alternatives. It’s better then nothing.

          • EtherealEarth

It’s actually $16 for me DX

Ah well, I love S;G, and I want to support it. ><

  • almostautumn

I— am an idiot. Back when news came SG was coming in English I thought it meant for PS3…
Guess I’ll go back to the dunce corner.

  • JuiceKun

I’d throw my wallet at the screen, but it’s late, so instead I am just gonna foam at the mouth and pass out in bliss.

  • ZekeFreek

Please, nobody should ever be following in MoeNovel’s footsteps.

    • doubleO7

They’re just getting it rated too. Thats not really a big deal.

  • Hey for anyone that ordered from JAST USA or JList, I was wondering how they go about declaring their parcel. Can you ask them to lower the value and mark it as gift? I don’t think purchasing this is wise for me as I will get charged pretty hard.

  • Anonymous

Wish i can get it, I wouldn’t mind this being my first VN

  • Villainous Inc.

Maybe I’ve got my priorities messed up here, but uh . . . what were you getting at with that “similar to Higurashi” statement? Higurashi isn’t on Steam or at least I can’t find it under either name. Is it slated to be? Is it on Greenlight? Why can’t I have this right now?

    • It just got greenlit on the last batch.

  • British_Otaku

So with the ESRB rating, they can expect it to sell in your Best Buy and GameStop instead of seedy places on the internet. Good, I’ll still be getting my limited edition through JAST USA again.

I’m curious which publisher over here will pick it up for Europe and get it a PEGI rating so it can get into stores and on Steam (I assume it is necessary for big digital stores too).

  • Gotta get this quick

  • kamiyan89

preorder done, one badge for my gf and another one for me.

  • Aerii

It’s getting an ESRB rating? So it can possibly be in physical stores like Gamestop?!

That was the one smart thing Moenovel did.

  • TiamatNM

I’m not preordering yet. I had a couple of JAST’s games preordered for over 2 years >_>

  • Bacon_n_Lettuce

So, what’s the writing quality generally like in JAST’s releases? I don’t have any experience with them, and after the pretty sub-par grammar and general lack of care MoeNovel put into If My Heart Had Wings, I’m a little wary of officially localized visual novels at the moment…

    • Kilicool64

It’s based on a fan-translation. I know the translator myself. His translations are most certainly better than the translation for IMHHW.

      • Bacon_n_Lettuce

Oh right, I completely forgot about that fan translation project! That definitely inspires more confidence in it.

And a random musing: it’s kind of sad in a way that fan translators are generally much more competent in their work than a professional localization studios now adays.

  • Arvis Jaggamar

Will this have English voiceover? Will J. Michael Tatum be playing Okabe? Please?
