Legacy of Kain Now Has A Third-Person Shooter Spin-Off

By Ishaan . September 25, 2013 . 8:30am

Square Enix have released a trailer for Nosgoth, an upcoming free-to-play, team-based multiplayer game set in the Legacy of Kain universe. The game pits humans against vampires, and each race has its own style of play.

Humans can use a variety of ranged weaponry and specialized equipment, while vampires specialize in melee combat and supernatural abilities. Square say that the game shows a previously unexplored era from the Legacy of Kain world.

You can visit the game’s official website and Facebook page for more information on the game and to register for the closed beta.

So true and so sad at the same time :(

    • Altin

This game touched me in so many wrong, wrong, wrong ways..

The flying vampire seems like fun.

      Fun….. and a little OP

        First day patch, calling it.

  • TheExile285

Wow SE, you NEVER cease to amaze and that is not a compliment lol

    • Shady Shariest

Well, at least we won’t be bored with SE horsing around :3¨
EDIT: I swear to god! These Typos! :3

  • Unlimax

My hype meter Almost reaches to the max when i read the name “Legacy of Kain”
till i saw the rest of the title …….

So is this the beginning of Publishing Free To Play games Square-Enix ?
    (Besides Gameglobe)

  • Ladius

The disconnect between Square Enix and its core fanbase is astonishing sometimes, I doubt a single KainRaziel fan wanted the franchise to turn into a free to play, team based third person shooter.

    • TheRealMalek

i don’t even see the link between this… thing… and the universe of legacy of kain.

I mean, when it’s supposed to be ?
      Why are they fighting ?
In what timeline does it occur ?
In this timeline is the oracle dead ?

oh wait it’s just a f2p p2w square game… nothing to see here..

  • Red Veron

People here do not realize that SE isn’t just Final Fantasy in Japan. SE is a bigass publisher in Japan that does more than videogames: they have a manga magazine, they’re involved in anime (FullMetal Alchemist), make action figures, publish mobile/online games, among other things.

For them to do something with a property they own isn’t surprising since they’re a publisher that owns Eidos now. Might as well do something with it.

    • Lucky Dan

Ah that explains why they still surviving why did they sack the CEO if they are still successful?

    • TheExile285

Doesn’t explain how one goes from ARPG to Third Person shooter….

    • Duo Maxwell

I hope you realize that each division are responsible for their own works. The anime division isn’t there to cover the game one’s ass.

But I guess you must think it’s a smart move to throw away the old fan base to chase the new one. It worked so well in the past, like Devil may Cr….oh wait.

      • AkuLord3

At least the DmC stuck to the same gameplay style than…THIS!!!

    • Nana

      People do realize this.

You don’t actually have secret nihon knowledge. Everyone, literally everyone, knows.

      It’s still a boneheaded move.

    • Lester Paredes

that doesn’t explain how one goes from a story driven action/adventure RPG-ish game to a Free to Play squad based shooter-type game. The disconnect is so massive… they didn’t even get the story right. A big thing (and literally the first 5 minutes of Soul Reaver) was that Raziel was the first vampire to ever sprout wings and was killed for ‘surpassing’ his master, Kain. Kain’s act provided the motivation for Soul Reaver and Soul Reaver 2.

  • Fox

Just why is it, exactly, that Square-Enix is so utterly incapable of doing anything right?

I mean, hell, they even screw up the little things–like localizing games they’ve already produced.

  • Ethan_Twain

I think this looks pretty fun. I mean, it’s not revolutionary. Third person class based shooter. Free to play. But the art looks pretty true to the Legacy of Kain aesthetic, and the focus on making melee vs. ranged combat actually balanced could pay off in a big way. There are very few games in the field that get that right.

On the other hand, as far as free to play class based online shooters go… I’m still leaning towards the new Mechwarrior or Tribes. Nothing here grabbed me like skiing or mech customization.

    • Lester Paredes

I’d feel better about it if they didn’t tack on the Legacy of Kain aspect. It seems like such a slap-dash decision because this doesn’t even resonate with the original story. I’m certain that there was a war between humans and vampires in that world, but not only have they gotten the time period for the story wrong, but one of the classes shouldn’t even exist (the winged vampire)! If this was it’s own thing, instead of being shoe-horned into LoK, I’d be much more receptive. I can only hope that it will be fun, for it’s sake. Like Batman Impostors.

  • tubers

Wow! It’s not an iOS game! :P

  • KazukiNanbu

if is free to play then i will try it…

  • Namuro

Well, that was a huge let down… Apart from the name, there’s nothing that reminds me of the Legacy of Kain series in that trailer. Do they have no confidence in their game that they have to use the name of the beloved series just to pull people in?

On a side note, this really remind me of Warframe. Although Warframe was made based on a scrapped project.

  • Rohan Viajar

Decided to look at the wikia for the Legend of Kain series.
Apparently there were 6 clans of vampires. The Winged ones in this vid are from Raziel’s (protag of Soul Reaver) Clan.

Apparently, They’re all supposed to be dead, or at least if this was prior to Soul era they shouldn’t have wings.

  • Kevin Schwarz

  • malek86

This looks nothing like Legacy of Kain. And I mean literally 0%. Which means I can just ignore it and pretend the series is still in hiatus since 2003. That kinda hurts, but not as much as accepting this new one.

But fine, let’s see all that is wrong with this:

    – that Nosgoth looks nothing like Nosogth, not even the BO2 version.
    – they said it takes place after SR1. So there really shouldn’t be many humans around.
    – clans in SR1 are all quarreling with each other, certainly not fighting together.
    – vampires keep getting more deformed with time, while these look much more humans than their SR1 counterparts, despite being from a later time.
    – humans with grenade launchers and railgun things, sounds just weird…
    – why not use Sarafan instead of just humans, to give it a slightly more in-universe feel?
    – if they really wanted to make it F2P multiplayer, why not at least make it melee PvP instead of a shooter?

I could go on forever, but I’ll wait until we get more information… which likely will make it even worse.

    • Landale

Your second point: They say it takes place after what kicks off Soul Reaver, not after Soul Reaver. So basically between Raziel getting thrown in and coming back out. This is fairly obvious thanks to the mutations in the vampires that have clearly started happening, but not yet to the point where they were in Soul Reaver itself.

      • malek86

In that case, it still doesn’t make much sense to see other vampires fighting alongside Razielim, which after the events of the SR intro should have been marked as heretics and annihilated.

        • Landale

Not necessarily. What actually happened to them was never once said. Raziel never came across any, but whenever questions were asked he was met with cryptic answers. Melchiah’s insane ramblings reveal that they may be dead but even if they are not how or why, yet the words also ring true in that among the six Raziel was the last to die, repeatedly. Kain, who shows repeatedly through the series that he enjoys playing word games, stating truths that don’t really answer things, states that he can destroy what he made, but he never actually admits to having done anything to them. Only Raziel, who has no evidence of his clan’s condition declares them specifically dead.

          • malek86

That’s possible too, but in the end, it’s a very big stretch.

          • Landale

Not really much of a stretch at all.

Kain speaks only truth, though getting a truth that directly answers the question is rare. “What I have made, I can also destroy, child.” He made Raziel, he destroyed Raziel. He didn’t make Raziel’s clan. But even if you were to say that simply by making Raziel he made his clan as well, then it stands equally to reason that simply destroying Raziel lead to the downfall of his clan, no direct hand in their deaths but ultimately his fault still if say without Raziel no more Razielim could be made.

This game could very well be WHY there are none seen in Soul Reaver, the others were able to have their numbers replenished while the Razielim have only the numbers they did prior to Raziel being thrown into the abyss to go through before they became extinct.

      • malek86

In that case, it still doesn’t make much sense to see other vampires fighting alongside Razielim, which after the events of the SR intro should have been marked as heretics and annihilated.

  • SirRichard

    Is nothing sacred any more?

    • malek86

“Given the choice, whether to keep making expensive single player games; or to challenge the F2P market for another throw – a better throw – against one’s revenue… what was a king to do?”

      • SirRichard

But does one even truly have a choice? One can only match, move by move, the machinations of corporate desires…and thus defy the tyrannous core.

        • malek86

Gamers: what do they profit from this defiance?
Squenix: there’s some grim satisfaction in infuriating you.

          • SirRichard

“Surrender, Square Enix, and we promise you an easy goldmine!”

“And I would promise you the same…but it would be a lie.”

          • malek86

We knew gamers’ weaknesses, having witnessed them for years. Retail prices are fleeting, because a story-heavy game is traded back as soon as it is finished. Gamers need only fear those games that activate with a serial, or bind to an account. A paid subscription scorches like acid, and casuals are devastated by Free-to-play’s microtransactions… we would have to modify our tactics to suit our foes.

          • SirRichard

Damn you, Square Enix, you are not God! This act of rebooting is unconscionable!

          • malek86

The market had changed to my eyes. I had not expected such cruelty from Squenix. For in the embrace of multiplayer I could find no freedom, only microtransactions. This would change in time for the worse, along with other series.

          • Göran Isacson

Future F2P LoK games: You’re a righteous fiend, aren’t you?

Past LoK games: Apparently, I am.

Wait that doesn’t really match. Let’s go with this one instead:
Let’s drop the moral posturing, shall we?! We both know there’s no such thing as enthusiasm involved in this project. Your reckless desire for money led you here- I counted on it!

… There’s no shame in it, Square-Enix. Greed is motivation enough in todays financial climate. Desire your players money, but do so honestly.

          • SirRichard

Legacy of Kain is deified. The gamers tell tales of it. Few know the truth. It was fruitful once, as were they all. However, Square Enix’s contempt for risks drove him to create me and my brethren. I am Nosgoth, youngest of his social games.

          • malek86

Look around you, gamers. See what has become of our series. Witness the end of an IP. The old titles, scattered to the corners of download services… single player has outlasted its usefulness, as has narrative.

          • SirRichard

Square Enix had changed to my eyes. I had not expected such cruelty from the company. For in the embrace of Nosgoth, I could find no comfort, only malice. This would change in time for the worse, along with other things.

          • malek86

Squenix had offered me no warning as to what this reboot would entail, and yet I must confess, in my excitement, I had not sought one. Was Nosgoth a cashgrab? I would watch the trailer for an answer.

          • TrevHead

I knew this game was to be multiplayer but I was expecting something like Dark Souls since they would beable to retain the lore of the originals.

This is…. just a death match game with LoK slapped on it. They might aswell make a Tomb Raider death match game or Tetris DM.

          • malek86

You missed my incredible SR quotation. #smh

        • Demeanor

          You are geniuses, guys! XD

Know what? Solti Horse doesn’t seem like such a disappointment anymore.

  • AkuLord3

I do like how the game would be alright by itself but then they slapped and said this is what they decide to bring in the Legacy of Kain series…Ahh games we want to returning coming back as this….AMAZING

  • Pockystix

because that worked so well for Resident Evil Raccoon City!

  • leingod

You know? It’s cruel to play with one’s feelings like that. What a shame.

    i don’t even…
Like seriously? a TPS of LoK? goddamn it square…goddamn it.
at least try to rip off diablo ):

  • DrakeClawfang

I loved Legacy of Kain…this is not Legacy of Kain. The gameplay, the vampires, the environment, look nothing like in the series. They said it takes place after Soul Reaver, by which point according to the story the humans were already decimated and in hiding, the war is over, the vampires won. And the Razielim Vampires (the winged ones) were exterminated by Kain after he put Raziel to death because growing wings before Kain did was seen as an act of defiance and treason. We’ve never even SEEN a Razielim vampire before because Kain had them exterminated.

The only way they could justify this game’s world looking like this is if it takes place in the modified timeline caused by the events of Blood Omen 2, where the Sarafan vampire hunters were reformed and the humans came to power again temporarily before Kain defeated the Sarafan. I could see the humans using the Sarafan Magitek-type technology to create the type of weapon seen in this vid. But that still would not explain how the vampire clans are around because by Blood Omen 2, Kain hadn’t raised his lieutenants yet, and even if this game says that he did it immediately after BO2, the Razielim certainly would not have their wings for a few more centuries.

God dammit Square-Enix, the story of Legacy of Kain was the best part of the series, and you’ve already screwed it all up with one trailer. That takes talent, and not in a good way.

    • Landale

They said this takes place after what kicks it off, so I would assume it’s placed in the time between Raziel getting thrown in, and coming back out. Soul Reaver also makes it a point to state that humans have been domesticated, not decimated, and that the “feral humans” who still clung to the holy war were permitted to exist simply because it provided a challenge for the fledgling vampires. That humans had been reduced to having only a single city, and one that had been infiltrated by vampires, showed how screwed things were, they were about to finish off their own food supply.

As for the Razielim, it’s never outright stated what happened to them. Raziel’s questions on what has happened or why it happened are always answered with non-answers and questions, leaving him, and frankly the player, to jump to conclusions.

Frankly, I want to see what they do with the other clans. I could see Melchahim, having not yet degenerated as much as they were in Soul Reaver, using their habit of stealing skin to imitate slain human players. Rahabim being used to get around any water defenses set up. Their depiction of the Turelim kinda irks me, it seems more like what you’d expect from Dumahim. You’d think Turelim would be the melee/ranged mix class with their telekinesis, and that the Dumahim would be the the pure brute force type. Hopefully they fix that. Zephonim, I would assume they’re the ones to set up traps; Web up a human that got separated, wait for someone to come save him, take them both out.

For the record; Yes this is kind of upsetting to me. But so far they haven’t actually violated too much of what was laid out so I’m still willing to see where this goes.

…….. I think I died a little inside. But I still hope this will bring back Kain… *sad kitty face*

The title got me SOOO excited having been a LoK player since the original Playstation and all the Soul Reavers, then after clicking it saw free to play blah blah………I have never been so disappointed with an announcement in my life. I’m pretty darn happy (hence my tag name) about any game really even the badly made ones…I play and have fun. but this is just no

  • Warboss Aohd

……….this is not Legacy of Kain.

  • Wake

This reminds me of the time when they turned Shadowrun into a multiplayer only FPS. I have no idea if this is going to be good or not, but I just feel sad when something like this happens. We’ve seen this happen already, from Shadowrun to Breath of Fire. They just slap an established brand that hasn’t been used for a while, to an IP that really could have been its own game. It’s all about nostalgia. They’re playing on the sentimentality of the audience. These franchises deserve far better treatment than this.

  • Lester Paredes

No. Just no. they can’t even get the series’ story right. I’m no expert, but I do know that there should be no flying vampires. Why? Well, because in Soul Reaver, Raziel was revealed to have been the first vampire to sprout wings. And he was punished for it. this was well after Kain took over the world. Seriously, it’s the first 5 minutes of the PSOne title!

  • Aristides

Oh SE… you really shouldn’t have canceled the new LoK on PS4… We’re really gonna hate you now…

The saddest part of this is that if Nosgoth didn’t use the LoK IP it would have probably been a great game by it’s own right.
