A Cyberpunk RPG With Miyamoto Musashi For PS4 And PS3 Hopes To Be Reborn

Reborn has a premise that blends cyberpunk with Japanese mythology. The story takes place in Neo-Tokyo where augmented humans live under the governance of Nexus Roku Corporation. Rena Nakano, the cyborg president, almost has complete control of the country. All she needs is the Tear of Heaven, a relic used in ancient times to seal the Tengu Demon Sojobo, to gain immortality. You play as Miyamoto Musashi who leads a group of heroes to stop Rena.

The game is presented as a 3D action RPG and while you can fight your way through levels with focus moves, players can also progress stealthily without killing people. Reborn keeps track of how you play, whether your character acts aggressively or prefers to avoid conflict and NPCS will react accordingly.

Reborn has been in development for nine months and the developer, Elemental-Labs, went to Kickstarter to get the remaining funds to finish the game. If Elemental-Labs raises $200,000 they will release the game for PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Also, Shin Koyamada who worked on The Last Samurai will join the team. Stretch goals include a PC version for Steam, a Vita release with Cross-Play, and a versus multiplayer mode. $40 gets backers a digital copy of the game.

This totally feels Deus Ex meets Shin Megami Tensei,to me. Looks pretty awesome.

  • Kayseur

Looks promising, I really like what we’re seeing here. Good thing they have a physical release in one of their stretch goal (even if it’s the highest), I hope they’ll reach it.

    • TalesLaw

Agree Can’t wait to play it.

  • Captain Levi

    Hype.

  • Nanaki

That art is incredibly easy on the eyes.
    Good read.

  • Pdugna

Hope to see this on ps4 soon another game to add to my collection of games comming to the platform.

  • MrRobbyM

That concept art looks really nice

  • Spirit Macardi

Looks like a cyberpunk Onimusha. I’m all for this, especially if it hits the PC stretch goal :3

    • Kai2591

      Seconded.

  • KyoyaHibari

    Kurozuka anyone?

  • DarthSithZero

DAT ASS. But seriously I like the concept, im a big fan of japanese culture , I love ninjas, oni’, samurais, katanas etc. I hope the game see the light of the day.

    • Morricane

Yeah. it really does look promising. But I’m always a bit wary when non-japanese developers tackle the subject – their approach to “Japan” (or other Asian cultures, for that matter) usually remains superficial, so the end result kinda feels “odd”…

Oh, and you can just leave the ‘s-es and be 100% correct :)
Just because it’s an English sentence doesn’t change the fact that the plural of a Japanese word still is exactly the same as its singular form :)

      • DarthSithZero

Thanks for the advice. English is not my first language

  • InfectedAI

Tsukihime’s head is disproportionately small. Sounds pretty cool. I hope it gets a PC release and multiplayer.

  • ShadowDivz

    Tsukihime……moon princess?

Anyway, game sounds okay. Looks pretty cool. I’d definitely give it a peak and if it’s as good as it looks i’d get it.

    • Dark Zerato
      • ShadowDivz

No i wondered if tsukihime means moon princess. Is that a girl from a type-moon VN?

        • Dark Zerato

Tsuki = moon and hime = princess. Then yes, it’s moon princess. The girl above is Arcueid in Tsukihime, on of Type Moon VN.

  • Suicunesol

This looks pretty cool. I was kind of expecting the real Miyamoto Musashi, though, resurrected. This one is a bit younger than I expected.

  • neetyneety

Looks intriguing, and I must say, the setting has me hooked. Japanese cyberpunk… why didn’t they make this sooner?! (unless somebody did something like this first, in which case, could anyone point that out? :D)

    • $1392518

Cyberpunk is really common in japan. Most prominent are Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

Oh. I would say first Feudal style JP cyberpunk game, but a really crappy PS2 game beats it, Seven Samurai 20XX

      • neetyneety

Oh, that’s what I had meant to say actually, Feudal Japanese Cyberpunk. An interesting mix, cyborg and samurais.

        • $1392518

          OHH. Metal Gear RisingI ISH

      • Suzaku

Well, not only that, but Japanese corporations and characters are a major element in Cyberpunk fiction, period. Nearly every Cyberpunk setting is ruled by Japanese megacorps.

        • Morricane

Yeah, because Japan had risen to an unexpectedly strong position in the world economy after an outstanding period of growth around the time all those cyberpunk works were created :)

  • Rocket D

I really like the sound of this concept and have high hopes for this game. A nice combination for what I hope will result in some intriguing gameplay and the plot sounds interesting.

  • JakatoX

Ooooh I’m getting Onimusha vibes from this! And it’s like they combined it with my love for Cyberpunk! I’m gonna back this up a little bit for now and add more depending on how much I think I’m going to like the game as they update on it.

  • Godmars

Bit concerned and confused about this. That’s this is a Kickstarter which is exclusive to one brand. Wold be another thing is this was also going to PC or announced as being PC-only, but you’d think that if the devs have picked a specific console they’d have Sony support.

And yeah. I’m likely going to end up giving them my money…

    • $1392518

Checking in on the Devs shows that they are sony licensed indie devs using Unreal Engine 3and4.

With how much trouble indies have to deal with microsoft, its no wonder most chose sony first.

Xbox version is possible with enough funding though. So its not out of the question.

  • $1392518

Hearing Musashi Miyamoto game bring back fond memories of Brave Fencer Musashi from ps1 and not as fond ones from Musashi Samurai Legend from Ps2.

    Hopes this pans through

    • Zangetsu777

Same here I loved “Brave Fencer Musashi” & “Musashi Samurai Legend”

    • KyoyaHibari

I’ve only played Samurai Legend and I enjoyed it, but I hear Brave Fencer is really good so I want to check it out.

  • TheExile285

    Saw this earlier. Looks promising

  • Sardorim

Those high heels on Tsukihime look so painful…

  • Valtiel Ikari

    OK, I’m interested.

  • Mir Teiwaz

Am I the only one getting a Jetstream Sam (from Metal Gear Rising) vibe from Musashi? Not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s just the first thing that comes to mind.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Probably not a coincidence, as Jestream Sam was actually inspired by Musashi.

  • SaveTheDay

I read “Cyberpunk” then “Miyamoto Musashi”
    > HYPE

  • Dark Zerato

It makes me feel sad when i think about CAPCOM. Where is Onimusha 5 ?

  • SuBw00FeR

    Do want. :D

  • Chim_era

Sounds good and looks good :D
I will keep an eye on Kickstarter ;)

  • malek86

Well they put the PC version as initial goal now. Still strange that it was PS3 and PS4 only in the beginning. Did they have some kind of deal with Sony?

  • Zangetsu777

    WHOA!!!!!

  • Kai2591

    Looks insanely wicked.

  • enorka miho

First game that I ever felt like backing.. i hope what little that I gave is helpful though.. Because I would really want to see what sort of perspective they can bring since they have multi ethnic creators behind the team.. God speed!

  • Skeptika Crediblus

Yes please. Who’s backing this one?

  • Settsuo

This reminds me how much I miss Onimusha. The entire style of that series was amazing. Really looking forward to this if it brings something like that back to gaming.

  • Göran Isacson

Man, that is one Caucasian-looking Miyamoto Musashi. Well, half-caucasian I guess is more accurate, but still. Maybe they’re reincarnations or descendants, more than they are the actual people? At any rate, if this can be the cyberpunk Onimusha people seem to clamour for, I am all for this game getting developed!

  • LogicIncarnate

I hope this reaches the Wii U stretch goal.

  • Joel

This game will never get made, 20h RPG for PS4 for 200k not happening. They claim they spent 3 years working on it but can’t even show a single ingame picture or footage!? shady as hell.

    • MPHavoc

They’ve spent 3 years developing and ironing out the game concept and story. They start working on the 3D models until 3 months ago; it’s all in the FAQ at the very bottom of their Kickstarter homepage. As they’ve said, they aren’t rushing this project since they’re keen on it being an ideal gaming experience. And after backing their game and spending time in their comment section, I’ve observed that they’re pretty darn sincere about the game and are also remarkably receptive to any suggestions to improve the prospective gameplay by their backers. As for gameplay footage, they’ve stated that they are going to include an extensive preview of it when they begin their redux campaign in November.

      • Joel

So they spent 3 years doing mind-maps? This game will NEVER get made mark my words. If it isnt a scam its a naiv project. a game of that scope intended for 4 consoles including nexgen would need a budget of atleast 20million, 200 workers and 3-4 years of development time.
Doing storyboards and artwork even in 3D is cool and all but until the actual game gets written in code and it works you got nothing. and thats the HARD part of making games the coding the materialization of the ideas. And that they got 0 zilch to show for. Hes got what 20 guys on staff you think they are going to work for free? My theory is that they got nothing nobody is working on this game until the money comes in and even then i doubt they can pull anything off. I doubt they can even turn it into a facebook game. This game will never get made.

        • Lagertha

          Yawn.

  • Happy Gamer

Oh holy wow. I have yet to see a setting like this it’s very refreshing. Back this! I would.
