You Can Eradicate Entire Monster Species In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

By Ishaan . October 28, 2013 . 10:29am

In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, you can bring entire races of the games enemies to extinction, Square Enix have revealed. There are limited numbers of each monster species in the games world of Nova Chrysalia, and when Lightning kills all of the monsters in a species, it becomes extinct.

Well, that is, after one last boss fight. The last remaining survivor of the species is called the “Last One”. This is a far stronger monster than the rest of its species, and defeating it causes the species to go extinct. (Square note, however, that some monster species cannot be eradicated completely.)

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released in February 2014 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America and Europe. Japan will get the game on November 21st, 2013.

Interesting…not to bash it but feels like a “kill XXXX amount of monsters” quest to me. Putting it under the “extermination” name, does make it seem cool though, and you really did make the monsters go extinct.

    • 60hz

yeah you nay be right, especially since they can’t be totally exterminated… strange…

      • EverEndingStory

What do you mean “can’t be totally exterminated?”

  • neocatzon

Well, that’s amusing, didn’t see this feature much in games (I believe there’s one mmo using this). It would be a problem when hunting specific loots though. Will turning back time returns them?

    • Happy Gamer

hey thats a great question! Would seem so immersive when you exterminated them, but when you turn back time, they are back

  • JuiceKun

    Yay genocide.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

genocide taste better after a Lightning storm

  • xAtKx

I wonder how this could affect item drops.

    • Hunts Rattata

I wonder if drops that are exclusive to one species will sell for higher prices the less members of that species are left, with an extra big bump once the species is extinct.

    • xAtKx

      Long Gui hunting?

  • MXC

Oh great, just wait till PETA gets their hands on this.

  • Go2hell66

Always wondered why you couldnt do this in monster hunter. i pretty much farmed rathalos into extinction

  • Dark Zerato

Basically, Lightning can almost wipe out the entire world. So sadistic.

  • katzedan

Behemoths, now I’m gonna take my sweet revenge against ALL OF YOUR SPECIES *evil laughter!* xD

    • Arcana Wiz

Now these annoying critters that haunted us since the NES era will finally know the fear of a game over!

    • Leon_Tekashi

Considering I’ve only played FF 3,8, and 9 and haven’t completed any of them, are Behemoths really that evil in each game? .___.

      • katzedan

In many FFs they can be a good headache with their high level magic like Flare or Meteor and really powerful attacks.

And there are other species like King Behemoth/Kaiser Behemoth and others, who make them even more powerful!

        • Syn

          Heave…dont forget Heave.

      • EverEndingStory

In the ones I have played and beaten, Behemoths appear near the end of the game, and it can be like fighting a constant barrage of mini-bosses.

        • Jon

Most of the Behemoths in the FFXIII series to date have been a relative pushover. You just have to kill them before they stand up.

  • Arcana Wiz

it’s a kinda cool comcept, wonde rhow it will be implemented in the game…. it can turn good or bad….only time will tell.

  • Nitraion

    If all enemy go extinct…
how we farm levels or item? :V
okay maybe i will ignore FFXIII story and play this game

    • Arcana Wiz

You cant! seriously, this game will be more about time managament, cause we have limited time, monster, subquests, missions, traveling, open wolrd…..

      • Nitraion

        Time management huh…
i thought i got used with atelier’s games..
but this is SE style of time management so we’ll see…
P.S. i will still ignore the story..

        • Anon-non

I believe this is more similar to Majora’s Mask than Atelier.

  • Freud_Hater

    Genocide! Yaaaaaay!

    Still not interested.

  • Demeanor

Sounds cool, the last game I remember committing genocide in was “Starflight” for the Genesis: locate the home planet of a race, plant a little Black Egg on it, detonate it, floor it, and voilà, race extinct XD

    • School Idol Addict

Red dead Redemption was like that too, you could erase an entire race of animal if you were hunting them all.

      • Niceneasy92

Pretty sure that was specific to buffalo’s wasn’t it?

  • Tincho Kudos

I didn’t understand, do I have to kill the last boss to begin erradicating species? If so, that’s a bummer, altough is neat as a post game content

  • Shippoyasha

Very cool that there is a certain repercussion to killing a billion monsters. I just hope it isn’t annoying once I start the grind.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

This is pretty old news. But it’s cool to see a screenshot for it :) I’m pretty sure it was also stated that the ‘last one’ will also drop rarer items :)

    • Lumi

Just hope that it won’t be a rare drop…

  • Tom_Phoenix

I can already see how the rest of the plot will turn out: the endangered species will band together, call Lightning “the false prophet” and wage a holy war against humanity until they handed her over to be executed for her crimes.

  • MrTyrant

Calling PETA right now…monster also have their rights……..haha.

  • Triplicity

If this causes permanently missable stuff…

  • No more Malboros ever!!

  • davidvinc

Damn cockatrices, I’ll finally exact my revenge for the Ice Cave!

  • Jirin

That’s kind of weird. Makes me not want to kill monsters knowing they’re endangered.

I hope they put in some monster names that are eerily similar to real world endangered species names. Especially the ones that poachers love to target. Like, hunt black rhinos, and they item drop ‘Aphrodesiac’.

  • Michael Connell

Now which species to exterminate first, the malboros, the tonberries, or the cactuars? It’s not level grinding, it’s pest control!!

    • Jon

Somehow exterminating the tonberry species doesn’t sound like it would be an immediate objective.

      • Michael Connell

I’ll admit one reason they’re on my list is to see if the last of them will be the Tonberry King

        • Jon

Lol yeah right. That mother f’er’s gotta go down sometime.

  • XD This is too awesome lol

  • revenent hell

That kind of makes me think of a limited amount of enemies to kill, like, if you KO all the monsters in an area they don’t come back………..Which would kind of suck for a person like me who likes to be a step above the “common” enemies you can run across….Level caps by area are NOT my friend

  • deadMastershiro

They are the prey and We are the hunters!

  • kenshinx13

…is that a Kanabo bat that i spy lightning using?

  • Max

Anyone else think its kinda pointless?

    • ShadowDivz

Not really. I sometimes hate a particular monster. And finally when i say “i will wipe you off this planet” it will be true!

  • smek2

Yay! Genocide. Fun for the whole family.

  • Syn

Kinda reminds me of FFXII when you killed so many of a type of monster and then spawned a rare monster…which you then went on to kill(Must have hunter RaNksth!!!) loved that feature,as well as the rare mark monsters themselves…ahh such fond poaching memories.

  • ShadowDivz

Last slime: You….. You savage that has wiped out my brethern… NOW YOU WILL PAY!
    Lightning takes of shades.
    Lightning: I.Want.My.Rare.Armor.

  • Göran Isacson

To you, the day that Lightning struck down your father and your tribe, was the most defining moment of my life. But to me…

    It was “loot-day”.

  • EmoryM

Is there a downside to destroying the biodiversity? I hope so.
