Why Walk In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII When You Can Teleport?

By Spencer . October 30, 2013 . 3:27am

You only have so many hours to save the world in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and the world compared to other Final Fantasy games is a lot larger. One way to get from one continent to the next is to run on a giant highway, but beware there are powerful monsters on the road.

Another way is to teleport! Lightning has a teleport ability that lets her zip from one place to another providing she visited that location before and unlocked that teleport point. Teleporting uses Energy Points or EP.

All of Lightning’s super abilities and healing magic are tied to Energy Points in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. EP are basically Technical Points from Final Fantasy XIII, so you accumulate EP by earning stars in battle. While explaining the Escape ability, which lets Lightning run from a battle, but costs time. Square Enix showed the EP ability menu. Just to confuse things, EP is GP (Glory Points) in Japan.

From top bottom the skills are:

Curaga (2 EP) – healing magic

Overclock (2 EP) – slows enemies, but Lightning moves regularly and can rapidly chain attacks

Escape (0 EP) – escape from battle

Chronostasis (1 EP) – stops time so Lightning can complete time sensitive missions

Teleport (3 EP) – teleport to different locations

So many hours? Dang, I hate timed RPGs, takes out my fav grinding. :p

    • School Idol Addict

Yeah me too, that’s why i have a really hard time deciding if i will pick or skip this game.
It do have a lot of interesting features, but the timed feature is a huge turn-off for me.

      • Bobby Jennings

Well Battles don’t take up time anymore so you guys can still grind.

        • OhMyClarence

Only a little though, because you still have to find the monsters which are roaming in this game rather than random.

    • I hate time limits in games. What is this, Super Mario Bros. the lost levels? :( What’s the point of an “open-world” in an RPG if there’s a time limit? I hate being in a rush. Maybe they’ll add survival horror elements and “limited ammo” in order to appeal even more to the mythical western gamer.

      • Espoir

Nah, they’ll make a spin off called Lightning’s Duty: a FPS involving Lightning in an apocalyptic world filled with zombies and soldiers.

    • OathkeeperSoraXIII

The time shouldn’t be ‘tooooo’ much of an issue. They’ve reworked it quite a lot from what I remember. Originally the game was extremely hard to complete at first according to the testers they said they felt too pushed for time. Since then it’s been reworked and you can do everything in a single run if you know exactly what you’re doing and have good time management. There’s also a new game+ in case you did miss some stuff, so all your equipment, magic, items and costumes will carry over. So it’s nothing to worry about I don’t think

  • Flamboyant Ass Nigga

Not a fan of timed rpg games plus i’m not a fan of lightning so i’ll wait for FFXV

    • DriftSlave

I dont see why would even bother reading a article on “Lightning Returns” if you don’t like Lightning….*smh* people these days….

      • Flamboyant Ass Nigga

Didn’t knew it was a crime nigga stfu, it’s a public online site i can post any opinion i want on the game.

        • Ferrick

yes, it’s not a crime to post opinions, but coming into articles to just say useless things like that is bound to bring you shite

  • Dark Zerato

Make me remember Star Ocean 3, when i had to walk all the way to any places in the game.

    • Sakurazaki

It’s a good reason why the game’s music will forever be stuck in my head.

  • Zikrayrus “Zikk” Dis Pear

I like how this is turning out. I don’t know if SE did any time based JRPG before but I would really like to see how it compares to others.

  • CureMarine

Why play the game when you can just press a button to do it for you? – FFXIII series

    • RichyGaming

Nice joke, but on legit facts, that’s not true. Because there have already been Final Fantasy games in which you would find some sort of transportation to go to places. I’m talking Airships, Teleportation Crystals, and just Teleport skill in general.

    • Have you played any of the XIII series games? Because if you did, you’d see how wrong that statement is.

  • A time limit? This is news to me. That’s kind of annoying.

  • Rake

I don’t see a problem with the timed feature, as long as it doesn’t go by extremely fast, allows for exploration, and somewhere to increase the time.

  • This seems a awful lot like majora’s mask to me. Timed, Changes Costumes to change abilitys (Masks) there are probaly more, but i cant think of them from the top of my head.

    • Göran Isacson

As someone who liked Majoras Mask, I also like those comparisons. I just hope it can be as unsettling as Majoras Mask, though given how this is apparently the big bad dramatic finale to the show I wonder if they’ll do something THAT bold.

  • Bunzi

“the world compared to other Final Fantasy games is a lot larger.”
Well when you’re stuck in an immensely long hallway in some of those worlds….

  • Devinja

Time limit is okay as long as it has a really good NG+

  • Altumn

I hope the Escape skill means that when you die in battle its game over and back to your last save. I kinda liked that challenge, you really didn’t want to mess up.

  • EX+

    To grind. Why else?

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

    i’ll wait and see

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I’m pretty glad there’s a teleport option as a means of quick travel although it’s nothing new. XIII also had the teleport feature via the Cei’th Stones. As for people talking about grinding, you do not gain exp from grinding, you gain stat increases by doing various side missions. Killing enemies will help gain you EP which in turn will give you more time (Teleporting/slowing down time). You’ll also get new magic and possibly new costumes from killing enemies. So I guess in a sense you could grind to get better techniques. But you won’t need to grind for stat increases as far as I’m aware. Just side quests. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong

  • Crimson_Cloud

I’m intrigued with this game, however the time passage doesn’t suit me at all. It is alright when I have limited options like, choose one area and automatically the time passes by fixed amount. Running nonstop will hinder me into looking at every nook and cranny…

  • Learii

I walk because I can make sure I don’t missed any treasure chests =D

  • Kumiko Akimoto

They hatin, when they see me teleport.

  • ShadowDivz

One way to get from one continent to the next is to run on a giant highway, but beware there are powerful monsters on the road.
