This Week In Imports: An Invitation To Akihabara

By Spencer . November 4, 2013 . 4:00pm

imageAkiba’s Trip 2 strolls into stores this week with a detailed recreation of Tokyo’s electric town right down to where video game billboards are. Akiba’s Trip for PSP was a success from Acquire and prompted the developer to release an expanded version, Akiba’s Trip Plus. Will being on two systems, PS3 and Vita, lead to even more sales?

Onechanbara Z: Kagura moves consoles too with an expanded PlayStation 3 version and kissing RPG Exstetra puckers up for release too.

  • Guided Fate Paradox tomorrow! I’m looking forward to it. I’m glad I got Disgaea D2 finished before this.

  • Muffum

    So excited for GFP.
Now if only I could play it tomorrow, instead of being half a state away from my PS3 for 3 more weeks.

    • ARMs7777

should have set up remote play with a psp or vita. Oh wait it doesn’t work. Thank god for PS4 next gen.

      • TheExile285

PSP wouldn’t have worked regardless though :V

  • DesmaX

Been waiting for quite some time for this moment. So getting GFP.

    Still thinking about CoD: Ghosts

  • Akiba’s Trip looks really cool. Too bad a localization is just wishful thinking.

  • TheExile285

Didn’t know Akiba Strip 2 was coming out already.

  • Yan Zhao

Guess we cant ever expect this to come to the west huh…:<

  • Brotato Chip

  • s07195

    Neptune Re;Birth 1
    Akiba’s Trip 2
    Battlefield 4
are all games I need in my life!

    • One of dem games don’t fit wiff da rest

      • s07195

Well, it’s not like I can only like quirky JP games… I do own BF3, COD:BO2 and FIFA 13, and I enjoy playing them (especially local multiplayer for the latter 2), but Tales is my favorite RPG series, and Akiba’s Trip/ Plus was a game I enjoyed playing on the PSP. :)

        • *recoils in horror* :)

What’s your favorite Tales game? I played the crap out of Tales of Symphonia, but I’ve failed to fall in love with any other. I have no idea how or why this is. You’d think I’d like all or most of them since I loved that one so much. Frequently it’s the combat that turns me off. Yet Symphonia had simlar combat to the others. I don’t get it. (Planning to try Vesperia and the PS3 entries, none of which I’ve played, but I did play 8 hours of Abyss on 3DS, adoring everything about it but being totally turned off by the combat.)

The ones I’ve played are Phantasia X, Narikiri Dungeon X, Hearts, Innocence, Radiant Mythology 2 and 3, and Xillia.

So far, my favorite game is Phantasia X. In part due to the combat being fluid, and in part for the characters. But Xillia is climbing its way up there too. (It’s my first console Tales game, actually)

Hearts, Radiant Mythology 3 and Innocence get shout outs for having a nice cast. It was particularly nice to play as many different characters in RM3, including the Hearts cast. On the other hand, I couldn’t finish Innocence due to a broken NDSL R button (no free run? Screw that!)

The only one I couldn’t get into at all was Narikiri Dungeon X. The combat wasn’t fluid, the story just didn’t captivate it. But it’s on the same UMD as Phantasia X, so all is forgiven. :D

          • Ohhh, you’re literate in Japanese then? That’s exciting. I’m jealous!

I will have to look up Phantasia X. And from what I’ve seen of Xillia, I’m really looking forward to trying it out. People speak so highly of pretty much all of the games in the series, though.

I don’t know who did the soundtracks of the ones you’ve played, but I first played Tales of Destiny, I believe, on the PS1 (I think that was the Japanese title too, but I’m not sure), and man, awesome soundtrack. I think it was the Star Ocean guy (whose name escapes me at the moment). I don’t know how many Tales games he’s scored, though–maybe it was just that one!

          • s07195

Nah, I think he was in charge of most Tales soundtracks, actually.
Great to see I’ve made you interested in Phantasia X~

    • Skeptika Crediblus

I’m with you on the first two….

  • Dsvkb

Awesome, looking forward to J Legend Biography coming in the mail soon. Really hoping Akiba’s Trip 2 gets localized though.

  • Akiba’s Trip 2 and Exstetra are going to be my last import games from Japan for some time. Really looking forward to them! :)

  • leingod

Great week for Vita in Japan…. hope we get both Exstetra and Akiba’s Trip eventually…

  • Skeptika Crediblus

Do I need to start a Kickstarter for the seed money to start the company to localize the games I want? Cuz if that’s what it takes…..

    • I will pledge.

      • Skeptika Crediblus

I have a feeling lots of people would. It’d be going into an industry cold that would be the rough part.

        • Yes… Not to be a pessimist, but I don’t know if it would work out. I would still pledge, though. I had visions of Kotaku and the media outlets posting about it. It probably still wouldn’t work out. :) But I would still pledge.

          • Skeptika Crediblus

One thing I learned from dealing with the Japanese in the publishing world is that you’re not going to get IP without a certain amount of guaranteed return, so you have to have your ducks in a row. Otherwise, you’ll only get third rate stuff to put out, and you’re basically sunk.

          • That sounds accurate. And even companies like Xseed are a little hit or miss. I suppose since Marvelous owns them, they are obligated to put out some of Marvelous’s less… uh… good… titles… But it’s funny when we get Valhalla Knights 3 (after the first few presumably did not do very well, but I wouldn’t know–also if you’re a VK fan, I mean no offense!), and the today we’re getting a new Ys game. There’s quite a gap in quality between the two, in my opinion. (Can’t wait for Ys!)

I don’t know what my point was with all that. Just, I guess, that it’s an odd business. I wish we had more small companies and that they could somehow pick up the slack and release Yakuza games, Final Fantasies, Dragon Quests, whatever the big publishers pass over, and also do the little ones as well, like Akiba’s Trip and Metal Max, and we could just all live in a happy world of these smaller businesses like Xseed that are satisfied not selling a million units in the first week.

Anyway, sorry, rambly and a little wistful and depressed over it frankly!

          • Skeptika Crediblus

There’s always hope. People screamed that they wanted Black Rock Shooter, and it got an e-release. Hit the message boards of companies like NISA and make your voice heard!

  • Ric Vazquez

I just hope this game and Exstetra are localized *crosses fingers*
