Soulcalibur: Lost Swords Introduces New Mechanics To The Game

By Sato . November 6, 2013 . 11:00am

Soulcalibur: Lost Swords, Namco Bandai’s upcoming free-to-play fighter with micro-transactions for PlayStation 3, will be going through its beta-testing phase from November 14 – 18. Today, Namco shared details on the game’s “Soul Break” and support character system.

After meeting certain conditions, you’ll see a red glow appear around the enemy. This is known as the “Soul Burst,” and doing big damage from here on will lead to a possible “Soul Break”.

In addition to weakening opponents after breaking their armor with the Soul Break, doing so will give you a chance of acquiring a drop from the opponent, which consist of raw materials and weapons.

The “Weapon Arts” are powerful attacks that will vary according to the weapons you’re equipped with. The above is a look at Mitsurugi’s guard shattering move and Siegfried’s long-ranged Weapon Arts attack. The Weapon Arts can be activated by pressing R1 or square and triangle simultaneously, after meeting conditions.

Here’s a look at Soulcalibur: Lost Swords’ support character system, where you’ll get to borrow any of your friends’ characters to help out during quests, which also requires certain conditions.

In the above scenario, we see Sophitia change positions with Mitsurugi, who arrived in the form of a support character card. However, you’ll only get to temporarily use the character, so you won’t be able to always rely on your buddy’s level 100 Mitsurugi to carry you all the way.

The three characters who’ll be available to play as in the beta test are Siegfried, Mitsurugi, and the recently announced Sophitia.

During the beta, you’ll get to purchase “Continue Tickets” and “AP Recovery” in addition to several other items from the game shop. Namco Bandai also tease that players who have a save data from the beta will have something to look forward to once the full version of the game officially launches.

Soulcalibur: Lost Swords will be available this winter for PlayStation 3.

Update: A representative from Namco Bandai explained the Soulcalibur: Lost Swords beta is only set for Japan with no plans to extend it to North America or Europe at this time.

*Ahem* I would like to propose a new feature:
    “Full Length ACTUAL game”
Edit: Sorry for Butthurt but i actually bough SC V

    • 愛憎

This was the first article I had seen about Lost Swords… I was really hoping for a game with all the features intact. I really liked V until I beat the story mode, then I recognized how much was missing.

    • rurifan

Ugh SC5, let us erase it from memory. Or at the very least only bring it up as an example of how not to make Soul Calibur games.

I suppose with the state of the fighter market (f2p trash across the board) there is little hope for a proper sequel to SC4.

      • k.b.a.

that game was ok but it’d be better if the cut characters were available in cas. it seems to me they were cut more for story reasons

        • midgard229

they were cut from the story. creator said they cut 75% of the game because namco wanted them to rush. there are still other characters with models, gameplay, story, cutscenes, voiced, some not voiced etc.

even a cassandra who fights with one sword and no shield, u can find the sketches

          • Christopher Nunes

I recall someone digging into SCV’s data for unused objects and found Kamikirimusi and Zasalamel (SV4) models on the disc.

Showing that they WERE planned to return for SCV but Namco did a bonehead move and rushed it. I wanted Kami-chan back, I love her character.

          • midgard229

i just want the full sc5 to come out :/

          • Christopher Nunes

I would’ve prefer keeping the old cast from SCIV then some of the new ones from SCV. Honestly they don’t click with me too much, and the story just… went in a bad direction.

Though the whole “Astral Chaos” plane does show possible timelines seeing how time traveling worked there so I’m assuming SCV is just an alternate timeline to me.

          • Vash bane

woah i didn’t know that thanks for the heads up but for some reason i did feel like for some reason the game felt … off for some reason. now i know why

    • Vash bane

do people still play that? i havnt played it online yet and after i get some practice in i think i’ll finally go online and get my butt handed to me lol

      • 愛憎

I tend to only enjoy playing fighting games against a person next to me. There are too many people online that use cheap methods and act quite rudely.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Clothes tearing?

  • Brimfyre

Namco really doesn’t know what to do with this franchise do they?

    • subsamuel01

Well they did the same thing with Tekken as well.

  • Teepo 64

As long as I’m not required to be connected online to play this game, I am down.

    • subsamuel01

You probably have to seeing how Tekken was always online and this is basically the same concept and publisher.

  • Hector Velar

I…I… I’m pretty sure this is not what the fans asked for…seems to me like a desperate way to milk money out of the fans with a very popular corrupted/unhealthy mechanics of microtransactions which seems alot of companies are jumping on the band wagon(because of fast profits). I call it corrupted and unhealthy because they purposely make the person heavely addicted to the point that they are wasting thousands on chances to get a digital item or continue playing. such bad practices should be illegal or at least monitored/controlled to protect the customer. if we continue supporting this then we will see lower quality on games and for just about anything we are going to have to pay… a dark age indeed, I miss the good old super nintendo/genesis/turbo days :(

    • Shady Shariest

Yup. This is the ugly F2P… When big companies can’t draw the line for a good practice and instead cash milk :/

    • Ouranus

Dude i think the same way about this era and about the micro transactions. I don’t comment much often but what you said was the truth. I thought that i was one of the few people that felt this way. Such a small text but so much deep. Congratulations!!!
I would like if the the new so called “gamers” had the same critical thinking that older guys like us have.

  • NightzeroAX

New music (bring back the composers from Soul Edge – SC IV), add Talim, Amy and Zasalamel and I’ll be interested.

  • Joshua Ayala

I feel like an annoying genwunner, but for me SC II and SC III are the best Soul Calibur games ever.

  • Guest

I see nothing but SC4 characters. If this uses the SC4 engine instead of SC5 then I have lost the very last reason to even consider playing it.

  • SCV’s only good for its character creation.

  • Crevox

The mechanics are cool because they used the word soul

  • Vitonofrio del Rosso

ahahah f2p beu.. ahaha f2p beu with stamina rechage/continue… ahahahahaah NO…

I hope these new gameplay features stay in Lost Swords and that they don’t even think in including these said features in a new mainline game,

  • WhyWai

there goes the inevitable shift to free-to-play in fighting genre…

  • leingod

So, SC4 lite, huh. Sounds lame.

  • Ninjagoon

I really wish Namco would start treating the SC franchise better. They rushed SC5 to the point where only hardcore SC fans or competitive players play it now. They cut out alot of the stuff that drew me and many others in. I would really like to see some of the CaS items, the Chronicles of the sword mode, and the CaS only weapons come back from sc3. Also if they could get ride of things like sticker limits and certain clothes not being able to be mixed that would be awesome.

  • DoctorButler

    Isn’t this single-player? lol
