Ragnarok Online Developer Takes Over Dark Fantasy MMO

Requiem: Memento Mori is a dark fantasy MMORPG that was published by Gravity Interactive, the developers of Ragnarok Online, in 2008. Now, Gravity have announced that they will be taking over the game in its entirety, including both publishing and development duties, going forward.

Requiem producer Denny Kwon announced via the game’s website: “Our team has been training with the Requiem Team day in and day out over the past few months. You may have already experienced some content we’ve helped designed with the team as we were transitioning. Things like the new PvP map, the new Halloween world monsters, and the Honor System.”

Requiem: Memento Mori takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the use of dark magic and genetic manipulation has resulted in war and famine, and monsters overrunning the world. You play as a genetically modified “Temperion” soldier, one of many trying to help save the world from this predicament.

Kwon goes on to add that Gravity intend to expand the lore of Requiem’s world, create memorable events, and so on. You can try the game out here.

I played Requiem way back during late beta for the original(pre-expansion) game. It was quite fun and the stylistic choices are significantly different than any other MMO.

However, the developers decided to go towards a particularly greedy direction involving a free to play model where free players are heavily penalized on experience, death penalties and item drop rates unless they subscribe, on top of the standard f2p cash shop functions.

If this takeover means a shift in pricing model I might try it again, but the game right now is far too cash grabby in a market where plenty of better f2p options exist(RIFT).
