imageSquare Enix gave Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, a direct sequel to Final Fantasy IV, is out now for iOS and Android. While the game has been released for WiiWare and is part of Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for PSP, the smartphone version is a full 3D remake updated with achievements. Check out our hands on impressions from Tokyo Game Show.

The story takes place years after Cecil and Rosa settle down. Their son Ceodore is the protagonist and he goes on an adventure strangely reminiscent of Cecil’s quest. New Band abilities work similar to combo attacks in Chrono Trigger with multiple characters using skills together.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is $15.99 on Google Play and iTunes.

Thankfully, my new Android is powerful enough to handle this game.

Quick to the 7 Eleven for Google Play cards! *cue Batman spinning logo*

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Why not wait until Black Friday to buy those?

      • Randy Marsh

No thanks guy, last time I went to Black Friday in 2009 I nearly almost got trampled by accidentally walking into the Sesame Street toy isle. No I’m not kidding here, people are totally insane during that night and I would prefer not dying over a bunch of Google Play cards.

        • SerendipityX

LOL. Okay, I laughed harder than I should have. You gotta be tough on BF to make it out alive sometimes.

        • Göran Isacson

This story amuses me far more than it should considering Randys role in the current Black Friday themed episodes. It’s like I’m hearing him describe his awful war stories from the mall.

  • Allec Ribeiro

Awesome so far except for the truly awful touch screen controls, but those are no fault of the game’s.

  • Vayu Purana

isn’t this a total bitch slap to the fans that got the PSP version?

    • Derek E Nay

There will be more… There is always more…

    • Yause

The 3D overhaul has always been divisive. Those who prefer the 2D iteration remain well served by the PSP release.

      • http://jesse-dylan.livejournal.com Jesse_Dylan

I’m happy with the 2D release. I wouldn’t mind a PSP (or better yet, Vita, or 3DS) release of this version of FFIV and After Years, though.

    • AndyLC

There’ll probably be a FFIV: The Complete Collection released on PSN at some point. That’s my guess.

      • http://watercrown.info/ Ryusui

Are you talking about FFIV: The Complete Chronicles? Because yeah, that’s already a thing, and it’s mentioned in the article.

    • ivanchu77

Depends if you prefer 2D or 3D graphics, i prefer 2D so in my case i don’t care at all for this game, psp version was enough already.

    • Arcana Wiz

Cause i like more sprites than chibi 3d…. i’m quite happy with my version.

    • lunarwhale

more so to fans of the DS version who were maybe hoping for this on 3DS or Vita, really. i’m happy with the 2D PSP version.

    • Kevin Schwarz

Why? The PSP version HAS the original FFIV remastered, the Interlude chapter AND the afteryears, so, why would that be a bitch slap for the fans who got it? In fact, I also agree that 3D style is horrendous, but then again that’s just me. The fact is, the PSP version offers way more than this IOS one.

  • new_tradition

The lack of voice acting is still a turn off. I’ll probably grab this on a sale, but I still have the PSP version to finish in the mean time.

    • gangrelion

Ah! So this was not just with my version! This was bothering me too! By the way: Does the PSP version got voices?

      • Detrimont

nope, as far as i know, it’s only the ds version

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

Thank the gods for the PSP version. That 3D art design is hideous. To me, anyways. IMO. IMHO. I figure I should throw those acronyms out there or I’ll start getting inundated by fanboys.

    • Aaron K Stone

I’d rather take horrible 3D models with personality than nice looking, but lifeless sprites.

  • harmonyworld

The art in the trailer is lovely!

  • ElAbuelo69

    controller support AT LEAST…SE? -.-

  • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

That font drives me crazy. It’s just so generic and un-Final Fantasy like.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

A review I read on a different blog is saying this game is just a bad rehash of the Final Fantasy 4 remake.
