Team Ninja Is Working On The Next Ninja Gaiden Game

By Ishaan . December 18, 2013 . 12:37pm

In early 2014, Tecmo Koei will publish Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, a spin-off from the Ninja Gaiden series developed by Spark Unlimited in collaboration with Team Ninja and Comcept. While Yaiba is being handled by Spark, Team Ninja themselves are presently working on the next mainline Ninja Gaiden game.

In a discussion with Keiji Inafune (above), Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi brings up the fact that Ninja Gaiden fans appear apprehensive of Yaiba, and aren’t convinced it’s a game they’ll enjoy. Hayashi then goes on to say that Yaiba is meant to offer a different take on the series, while Team Ninja work on the next game.

The conversation between the two developers is as follows:

Hayashi: As we’ve talked about Yaiba, there have been some Ninja Gaiden fans who have said Yaiba’s not the hardcore action game that they’re looking for. Honestly, they’re a little hesitant about the game.

Inafune: Yeah, some people are a little worried.

Hayashi: To those people I say this: Team Ninja is thinking of the next Ninja Gaiden. For example, if the games were food, the Ninja Gaiden series would be a rich meaty entree and Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z would be dessert. Every course of the meal would be in the same Ninja Gaiden world, but gamers will experience different kinds of play. That’s how Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be different.

Inafune: You just let it out that you’re coming up with the next juice steak. So to the people waiting for that next Ninja Gaiden, it’s coming! And in the meantime, enjoy Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z!

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be available in North America on March 4th and in Europe on February 28th, 2013.

Try not to train-wreck the shit this time, Team Ninja.

    • chibidw

Don’t worry, all of the advancements in “physics” technology that came from their forays into the Dead or Alive games should allow for the most unparalleled acrobatic Ninja experience yet.

      • Godmars

So what you’re really saying is, boob bouncing is safe.

  • $15672307

I just hope Ninja Gaiden 3 was a good wake up call, even with the Razor Edge fix, the game was seriously lacking.

    • ALfromHELLSING

I love Razor’s Edge, it was epic but they should really bring adventure elements back. First NG was more like action adventure, NG2 had few adventure elements left and NG3 was pure action.

    • Servant BerserCAR

I can’t blame for the high expectations on this next NG. Even Hayabusa himself looks worried.
      “This has to be good.”

  • cloudcaelum

What about next DOAX (3). :P

Next-gen Ninja Gaiden might be cool..

  • Godmars

Is it wrong to want a new 2D Ninja Gaiden?

  • Ninja Gaiden: Jiggle Physics XXX

  • Yan Zhao

Just make Hayate playable finally, and PLEASE make Ayane/Kasumi/Momiji playable on the get go without some “Ultimate” version. And make them relevant to the damn plot.

And seriously hire better level/environment designers. Bring back the exploration that NG1 had on the Xbox.

  • TheExile285

I hope its more like NG2 and not NG3……

    • David García Abril

I hope it’s more like “Ninja Gaiden Black”, actually.

    • makubexnas

Yup, fruit ninja are more ‘ninja’ then ninja gaiden 3

    • Kevin Schwarz

      WE ALL hope.

  • brostar

The Ninja Gaiden series is fantastic. I loved Ninja Gaiden 2 and 1. Still have to the play Dragon Sword and Razors Edge. I’m hoping the next NG game will be more 2 & 1 than 3.

  • I wish I could get excited for this. I really do.

But hey, what’s the latest on Devil’s Third?

    • colorblindnightmare

Nothing new in a teally long time. 2014 is all we got atm :(

  • I hope the meat is tough and hard to chew. Oh and more Momiji please =3

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Did Razor’s Edge seem to be more like NG 2.5 (those who really played it)? I like how they made the SoB mechanic (countering grabs). My little wish is that NG4 could be more adventurous like NG1. I hope we hear soon what kind of direction he’s taking this one in.

Also NG3 and NG3RE did NOT introduce any new weapons… I’m hoping for them to come up with ideas… hopefully… and bring back some from NG1 (Nunchaku, Wooden Sword (Unlabored Flawlessness), maybe even the Kitetsu). I know Vigoorian Flails are preferred over Nunchakus… but there’s that satisfying blunt sfx I always love lol

I also kind of dislike switching to other characters during the story mode. I would just like to go through as Ryu. Play as other characters later.
Well… I’m willingly to wait long if the game turns out good.

Did Hayashi make another food analogy? Last I read, he did it with burgers ఠ_ఠ

    Geez, I wrote too much.

    • David García Abril

“Razor’s Edge” fixed most of NG3 gameplay flaws, if that’s what you ask. In some respects, the combat was even better than NG2.

However, the level design and story were impossible to save, so that prevented it from being a true great game.

But at least the combat was a blast to play once again.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

Yeah, I like to watch gameplay of NG3RE, I think it seems even faster than NG2.
Of course, since it’s still based on the original NG3, flaws are still there.
One thing I seemed to notice, from what I’m seeing… the 360T(Y) with the Scythe seems really OP in the trials.

I know I would like NG3RE (Unlocked Kasumi in the demo), but… I don’t feel like buying it right now. TN’s games… just fell of my priority radar.

edit: oh yeah, NGB is like… a classic to me xD

        • David García Abril

They also fixed some of the story by removing some of the worst scenes.

Remember that god-awful, pathetic scene in London where you are FORCED to kill a terrorist while he begs for his life (aka, the worst piece of writing I’ve seen in a video game EVER. And that’s saying something…)?

          Yeap. Gone in RE.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Haha, I spent nearly two minutes standing there because it was told before the game came out “you have the choice to kill or not” in vanilla NG3. Which was complete BS lol. Ryu was a killing machine xD.

        • malek86

Gameplay is almost the same as NG2, save for the addition of grab counters, so there’s that. Although, enemies don’t have as much a tendency to gang up on you as before (and there are no incendiary shurikens).

Problem is, there are still a lot of QTE’s during the game, and the bosses just aren’t very fun, so I still consider it worse than NG2 as a whole. And that’s not including the god-awful story and level design, as David said.

  • ReidHershel

-Fix the story, don’t make it all militaristic.
-Bring back the amazing Ninja night art-style of NG2, just looking at the poster is enough to start up my PS3.
-Keep the playable characters and branch upon them.
    -New weapons and moves.
    -Bring back more demons.
    -More costumes
-I literally can’t express this enough, KEEP THE NINJA NIGHT THEME, IT IS SO AMAZING, I CAN’T GET OVER HOW PERFECT IT IS.

I felt like Razor’s Edge was a step in the right direction, Yaiba worries me a bit, but I have hope for NG4!

    • ndjn3979

What is this Ninja Night theme??

      • ReidHershel

Basically blending in with the shadows, like this:
Ninja Gaiden 2 pulled it off SO well in the 1st stage.

        • ndjn3979

Oh I thought it was a badass music theme lol

    • ALfromHELLSING

And they need to bring Hayate to Ninja Gaiden series already. Kasumi is in the game now, he’s the only ninja missing there.
How come he didn’t make it to Razor’s Edge. He’s too awesome not to be there.

  • GeneGodHand

Bring Itagaki BACK!! You need him Team Ninja.
I hope Itagaki soon realeases Devil’s Third that game look awesome.

    • TheHolypopeofgaming

No They don’t DOA 5U was the best DOA yet and they did it with out that creepoid.

      • GeneGodHand

But Ninja Gaiden 3 sucked ass. They need him.

        • TheHolypopeofgaming

You only Think it sucked because you were told by big game media is sucked. The game was fantastic.

          • GeneGodHand

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA were I told? Nigga it’s a QTE shitfest, You can’t do great combos, you only use sword, you only have one ninpo which clears the screen from enemies, there is practically no exploration, level design is meh, boss fights are boring, and story is trying to be 2deep4you.

I think it sucked because I’m a diehard Ninja Gaiden fan, I love 1 and 2, but 3 it’s shit, they managed to correct a lot of the problem’s in Razor’s edge version, but still level design was lacking.

Sorry but after reading this I must say you have no standars. I think big media like IGN, Gamestop, Kotaku, etc suck ass, they gave a deep combat game like The Wonderful 101 a 7, just because they can only play press x for win QTE cinematic movies. But I also think you suck. You have no standards.

          • Anko Is Furious (King T.G.P)

Was calling him a “N—-” really necessary..? That aside.. Opinions. Enough said lol.

    • colorblindnightmare

      Up voted for devil’s third.

  • JMaster3000

    So….. i guess its for 3DS?
I know that they said that they are making it for it or something like that.

  • DarthSithZero

Excellent cant wait, meanwhile I want Razor’s a Edge on Vita.

    • ALfromHELLSING

I was hoping Razor’s Edge plus will follow after NG2S+ but it didn’t. There’s still a chance tho.

  • David García Abril

I really like the idea of a new “Ninja Gaiden” game. What I’d like to see:

    – A return to the adventure style of NG1.

    – I’m not opposed to trying again a better narrative, but please Team Ninja, be smarter about it this time! How the hell did you think that a story about Hayabusa’s morality was a good idea for a game like this?

    – Put Momiji, Ayane and Kasumi from the beginning. They don’t need to have much importance: just one chapter to each one of them and a co-op moment (like the Hayabusa village chapter from NG3, probably the only good one in the game).

    – Yeap. Bringing Hayate would be awesome as well. Although bringing another character from the NG universe would be nice too. How about a grown up Sanji?

    – Related to the previous two points: how about a system in which, instead of just having Hayabusa with all the weapons, you can switch between characters and each character has his/her unique set of weapons (just two or three per character)?

    – Co-op missions also from the beginning. Also, designing the story mode so Hayabusa has always a side kick and a friend can jump in at any time could also work (albeit it would be more delicate, so handle with care).

    • Derek Harrell

“How about a grown up Sanji?”

THANK YOU! so im not the only one thats had this idea. ive been looking at the kid just waiting for the moment when he goes from naive child to brutal killer, i think it would be really cool to see his transition

id also suggest the next game taking place in the Black Spider clan villiage durring like a coup between the people who want to continue the fued and those who are tired of being slaughtered. those journals were dam interesting to read and that clan is more than meets the eye.

  • ndjn3979

    Didn’t 3 like, bomb?

    • I prefer the Sigma 2 engine

    • MrJechgo

Razor’s Edge surely was an improvement.

      • malek86

Yes, but by that point, sales were doomed by the game’s terrible reputation. I don’t think NG3 was particularly successful.

  • malek86

I see Hayashi still likes food metaphors.

  • Can’t Best Me

Bring back Rachel and throw away the unknown ninja. Hate to play as him to get trophies. And also bring Ryu’s giant sword. More fiends. Epic bosses. And stop with those huge/giant last bosses. Ninja gaiden 1 does it right.
    Bring back items.

  • KnifeAndFork

Ninja Gaiden 4: Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja

Aka please put Sega’s Shinobi in as a cameo

And maybe also Virtua Fighters Kage while you’re at it

    • TheHolypopeofgaming

      Complete with Pedophile lead singers

  • EinMugenTenshin

Please let me play as Momiji, Ayane or Kasumi from the start. Ryu can cover the cutscenes no problem.

  • TheHolypopeofgaming

More Ninja Gaiden is always a good thing. 3 didn’t get a fair shake. Too many people decided they hated it before they even gave it a chance.

  • Eder García

i feel they are going to throw away everything they learned from Nintendo for this game.

  • colorblindnightmare

I admit this announcement triggers my ninja senses with alarm. A decent storu is fine, but it can be deemed worthless if there isn’t game play to match. So I’ll give you guys another chance. I love Ninja Gaiden, I’m willing to give you guys a second chance. I’m giving Double Helix a chance so why not you guys? Good luck team ninja, keep the ki (and blood buckets) flowing!

I want a Ninja Gaiden game with level design / level progression similar to Ninja Gaiden / Ninja Gaiden Black / Ninja Gaiden Sigma but with the combat of Ninja Gaiden II / Sigma 2.

There are some elements of Razor’s Edge that I did enjoy, but for the most part, I think a hybrid of 1 and 2 would be perfect. Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to use a brand new engine altogether. The character models of the playable characters in Razor’s Edge were really well put together, but the environments were crap.

  • ajneez

    please, like NG Black!

  • ajneez

i would love a story about a war between diferent ninja clans!

  • Sergio Briceño

“…if the games were food, the Ninja Gaiden series would be a rich meaty entree”

Is it possible to become allergic by the third time you try something?

  • KyuubiGoku1 .

I really liked all three of the NG games, but I hope for more of a smooth play style while keeping with the adventure-ish theme that NG1 had. Course some story co-op is also appreciated. Maybe just a little
