PlayStation Plus members in North America have a solid selection of games in January 2014. DmC Devil May Cry, a reboot of Capcom’s action game series from Ninja Theory, and Bioshock Infinite will be part of the Instant Game Collection next month along with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons all for PlayStation 3.

Subscribers will also be able to get Worms: Battle Islands and Smart as… for PlayStation Vita. Have a PlayStation 4? You can download Don’t Starve for free too. That’s a pretty impressive line up to start the year with.

  • SirRichard

Seeing as we got DmC this month, I guess that means we’re getting Infinite at some point soon because of how generally similar the PS+ lineups are? Kind of nice to see the US getting something we didn’t already get first.

    • z_merquise

I started to subscribe to US PS+ just few months back. I really hope the free games offered are really similar for US and EU because I sure want to get games like Guacamelee and DOA Ultimate for US PS+.

      • SirRichard

On the whole, Europe generally has it a lot better with Plus than the US, getting the likes of Battlefield 3, Saints Row 3, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, Remember Me, DOA5 and so on, though that’s just been recent months. If this is any indication/hope, the US branch might be getting its act together.

I hope it does, Plus is wonderful and everyone should benefit from however the hell Sony are striking these deals.

        • Herok♞

The only 2 games you menttioned we didn’t get were Remember Me and DoA5

          • SirRichard

Generally we got them first, and I’m pretty sure there were some download games or something we got. I just remember the general consensus being that ours was better most of the time,

          • z_merquise

Metal Gear Rising was in EU PS+ too.

    • Hound

I had already gotten DMC, but was going to wait a bit for Bioshock to drop in price (since I assumed it would be a greatest hit.) Looks like I won’t have to wait after all! *excited*

  • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

Bioshock Infinite Not bad not bad but Ewwww DmC (dumb story plus bad history with lame jokes = a Trashey Remake of a great game). But anyway looks likes the Ps Vita is getting the bad free games again.

    • Vitor Duarte

Read what you wrote again please. “(dumb story plus bad history with lame jokes(…)”
The story is not “dumb”, it’s not perfectly written, and the jokes are lame, yes, but it’s interesting and a fresh take on all the demons thing. And gameplay is good too, no complains there. I played every DMC out and I must say, this one was the best after 3. People need to look at the game beyond the Dante’s hair colour.

      • DaiRaiOh

I looked at the game past the hair color and still thought it was crap. It took out so much of what made the franchise good and replaced it with material that wasn’t the definition of quality.

        • Herok♞

Just so I get the perspective of another fan, what made the franchise good in the first place, I played them all this year and though DmC was pretty good

      • Chido55

If this game is not named Devil May Cry in the first place, I bet it could be one of people’s favorite.

Finished it, I love the gameplay, but the rest is just spitting on the previous DMC games, which is greater.

        • Hound

Simply comparing DMC’s gameplay to Heavenly Sword or Enslaved’s gameplay (ignoring the theme, boss dialogue, and cut scenes) really puts it in perspective. The gameplay is very much a step above all of Ninja Theory’s previous work.

Or, you can compare this game to Devil May Cry 2 (another DMC game that had a lame story and was made by a different team than its predecessor.) Devil May Cry 2 was flawed. Bosses were buggy, animations were jaggy, AI was flawed. DMC has rather impressive enemies, animation is spot-on and AI is… well ok (and could certainly do without the camera making monsters tame.)

But then, do you remember that the team that brought us Devil May Cry 2 had realized that their creation was poorly received by fans of Devil May Cry 1? Guess what they did as a response. They made Devil May Cry 3 to try to get “back to the core fans.”

          • Mecha_the_Hedgehog

The main part of the game you praised Ninja Theory wasn’t that involved in they stated that for the most part the game play was being worked on mostly by Capcom’s studio the same one that worked the Fourth game it was a collaboration and it was there half that really didn’t deliver.

There job was to reboot the franchise make it more visually pleasing and make the story more accessible to the mainstream western fans. In other words they were hired to put on the coat of paint to get the Call of Duty fans and Assassins Creed fans who Capcom think gets scared of anything remotely Japanese to get interested and increase the sales up to AAA title numbers That plan went the opposite direction. Hopefully Capcom learns there lessons and stops telling the audience what they want instead of actually giving them what them want.

          • Hound

Certainly you can disagree, but making up lies is only going to spread gossip. If Ninja Theory were simply outsourced to for art and story direction, multiple developers would be credited.

Combat design was done within Ninja Theory under Rahni Tucker http://www.linkedin.com/in/rahnitucker . Yes, Ninja Theory worked closely with Capcom during the development process to ensure that their work was cohesive with their interpretations of the combat system, character design, etc.

It’s similar to instances where a movie director would work with someone highly familiar with the original source.

Certainly, have a problem with the character script or character design, but why go out of your way to make up lies and claim that this was all there was to it?

Ok so you agree with me that DmC’s story was bad plus I played It before on day 1 and I didn’t like it. Now the game-play was like any other DMC game but DmC had to make color code fights which was so kiddy and by bad history I’m talking about them remaking him to be a Nephilim then not knowing that Nephilim were the offspring of the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men” according to Genesis 6:4. I’m sorry but you must never played anything but Dmc to say this.( but it’s interesting and a fresh take on all the demons thing.)DmC Dante’s hair color(in the manga his hair was black) is not even a breaking point for me It was that plus Vergil’s remake , the story, color coded fights and even Dante must Die was too easy.
PS. lol You spelled color wrong.

        • Chido55

idk anything about ‘Nephilim’ but in the original DMC, Eva was a plain human, secks-ed by Sparda and gain 2 demon powered human kids, Dante and Vergil. She was an angel in this? Bull.

        • Vitor Duarte

The story wasn’t great yes, but what’s so bad about colour coded enemies? It makes the player use all the weapons in the game, I remeber that back when I played DMC3, most of my friends only used Agni and Rudra, DmC tries to make the most out of the weapons it offers. So it’s not kiddy, other games uses colour codes for lots of things and no one bats an eye. But if its DmC everyone loses their bloody minds. So what if they made Dante into a nephilim? “Oh the Bible says something else about nephilim” So what? Other games use elements taken from various mythologies and twist them to make something different and I don’t hear anyone complaining. The manga is worth as much to the canonical franchise as the anime, which is next to nothing (even though I liked the anime). I don’t like the way they made Vergil here too, no honour and he uses firearms (blasphemy!). But those things are little compared to the game as a whole, the combat was fun, the platforming sections were well constructed and the graphics were slick, not to mention the awesome soundtrack. Again, I played all DMC games, I even liked 2, although I think it would benefit from not being named Devil May Cry.
PS. Colour is british english. Know your spelling, not everyone lives in USA.

          • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

Lol I just don’t think a hack and slash type game like DmC needed color coded enemies to make it good or to make the player use all the weapons in the game. If like me you are truly in to a game you would try all the weapons in a game. Wait wouldn’t that be the other way around with the game holding little to nothing against it’s manga or Anime counterparts seeing how games change the story’s and from the way it was original made just to make a game for all.

          • Vitor Duarte

True, DmC doesn’t need colour coded enemies. Does having them make the game worse? No.

    • Hound

What do stories and history have to do with a Devil May Cry game? If I remember right: 1 was some slapdash Castlevania-like nonsense with Resident evil elements, 2 was buggy and needed some serious play testing, 3 had an obnoxious full of himself nitwit for a protagonist that filled every cut scene with yawn-worthy attempts at “looking cool” for all those eleven year-olds out there, and 4 was an awkward attempt at combining a modern Castlevania with a Final Fantasy theme.

Instead, at least insult the overuse of adolescent swearing, rather lame alterations to the theme, or the age-old level structure and obviously different combat system. But, if you’ve never played it, at least hold your opinions until you played it for free. Then, please post your constructive opinions of the devil may cry series in a way that isn’t as vague and uninformative as “Ewwww. dumb, bad, lame, and trashEy”.

      • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

Ok ok 1st of I played this game on day 1 my Little brother got it and I said ok I’ll give it a try seeing how it is a game made to be the next gen’s dante. After playing this game I remembered not to trust ign’s scores but the user scores because Ign gave DmC a 9 or something like that but gave the better game at the time MGS:Rising a 5 at the time of release. Yes DMC1 was like that but not every game get that great 1 game of it’s series greatness and DMC 3 was based of Dante from the DMC manga. So ya saying Lame it true man.

    • Herok♞

Please tell me you are joking. If you payed attention to any of the stories of the Old DMC games they were terrible.I have no idea what you mean by bad history and the jokes are what I would expect from DMC so I don’t see what are talking about

      • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

Ok @Herok 1st off great avatar. Now the DMC game hand good jokes but DmC had to many joke trying to put down the old dante. The storys of the DMC games were great and the things you fought were not color coded for you to fight hell the gun that DmC Dante have are crap even fully upgraded and by bad history I’m talking about them remaking him to be a Nephilim then not knowing that Nephilim were the offspring of the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men” according to Genesis 6:4.

        • Vitor Duarte

All the stories from all DMC games are bad. Not even one of them is good. They are enough. They justify the setting and the action. Again you sound like a kid complaining about colour coded enemies are making the game kiddie. Ebony and Ivory were always bad in every game, they exist to complement the close combat arms, and maintain your combo or juggles. And again, stop talking about the Bible and what it says, this is a DMC game, not a playable version of the Bible.

  • Edgar Garcia

I used to be skeptical with playstation plus, but it is a neat way to try games one wouldn’t even bother buying as well you could just dowload all the free games and keep it in your download history and keep the games as long as you are a subscriber. Great games like gravity rush, soul sacrifice, shadow of the collosus are worth it. My only complaint is downloading time.

  • Chris Yuen

Malicious/Yakuza 1&2HD/Soul Sacrifice being added for Hong Kong/Asia PSN. Still some way to go before they can match up to NA/Europe’s deals=X

Come on PlaystationAsia, I’m still waiting for Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus to be added as one of the Vita games…(will still be buying a English day 1 if XSEED managed to bring it to English-speaking shores though)

    • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

Now that sounds like a great Ps Plus!

  • MaximDualBlade

I will regret not having psplus when god eater burst was free (ended this october if i recall correctly). At least until we get god eater 2 of course but a taste of the original would be useful

  • Vitor Duarte

This is an impressive line-up for the PS3. Then again, NA already got Soul Sacrifice, so EU getting SS and Blazblue CSExtend for the Vita isn’t that surprising. What is surprising is Bioshock Infinite on that list, I hope we get that soon enough.
And how long until we get The Last of Us?

  • KingGunblader

I get a 320 gig HDD for my PS3, and suddenly two major titles are free PS Plus games. I just love it when crap lines up like that.

  • SlickRoach

Damn, I need to buy a PS4 asap for Don’t Starve as redundant as it is since I already have it on Steam, but I guess I should wait for the Vita version since a PS4 is hard to come by now.

  • Minos

Well, that answers the question on DmC and Bioshock Infinity’s sells.

I noticed how both games didn’t sell a lot, but never thought they did it this badly.

    • Herok♞

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/421632/bioshock-infinite-reaches-4-million-sales-milestone/ and I can’t find any numbers for DmC but I don’t think either sold that badly unless you say 4 million is to low of a number

      • Minos

Actually, a game needs to sell a minimum of 8 millions for me to care about its numbers.

        • z_merquise

          At least 8 million!?

Reaching 1 million in sales is already big and also difficult to achieve. Also, not every game should be multi-million seller to be successful.

        • 하세요

Majority of games must be terrible to you, then.

        • notforsale

Bioshock Infinite sold more than Final Fantasy VI lol

  • Solomon_Kano

    Infinite? Excellent.

With DmC free, I suppose I’ll finally play Vergil’s Downfall. Sold the game before the DLC hit.

    • LustEnvy

Vergil’s Downfall was a bit of a letdown, TBH. Worth playing to see what happens after the game, but ah well.

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I watched the story on YT back when it came out. I’m just in it to play as Vergil. Story was…

  • Herok♞

I already have Bioshock and DmC so nothing big for me this month. In the case of DmC I think this will finally get people who were on the fence to play it since it was really good game, the gameplay was good and the story made sense and after playing all the other DMC games right after I feel its even fitting of the name.

    • LustEnvy

Yeah, basically the vast majority of haters are just whiny pissants that are butthurt that it’s a different Dante. If they actually bothered to play through the whole game, this Dante is a lot more likable than the Dante of before. He has a LOT more substance to his character. But people like one-dimensional character with little depth, so it’s an argument that never wins.

  • Godman

Its a shame I already got/plat’d both games, I guess its Don’t Starve for me. I do hope folks enjoy these games though, they’re awesome!

  • https://twitter.com/Panda_castro Panda

I guess is Don’t starve and Brothers for me. I might get DMC if I am really bore.

  • mockturtle

Not a bad lineup, but I already have Bioshock and Brothers, don’t care about Smart As or Worms, Don’t Starve is irrelevant because I don’t have a PS4, and I wouldn’t get DmC just on principle. Hopefully February will be better.

  • César H. Sandoval

Even for Free getting DmC is kind of a scam (Mostly because of this crap taking up space on your Hard drive), I’d say after getting it for free too some time ago.

It can be funny if you see it as a parody of a game instead of a real DMC entry.

    • http://Youtube.com/Dyjuan1 Rising Overlord

A parody of a game instead of a real DMC entry lol that is sooooo true.

    • http://blackstar2661.deviantart.com/ SilverSpades

Sorry, but I disagree; I bought and enjoyed the game. Hell, I’m even excited to play it again for free.

  • otakumike

great month, gonna sell off Bioshock and make a small profit. :)

  • Weeb

Even DmC and Bioshock: Infinite being free isn’t enough to make me play them again. Easily the most boring games I’ve played in 2013.

  • Freud_Hater

Joining Bioshock infinite with DmC in the same sentence is like putting a finely aged wine in a bowl along with some turd found on the side of the road.

    • LustEnvy

      Both excellent games, so, no.

      • Freud_Hater

        Your opinion. It’s cool.

(Love your avatar, by the way)
