Nippon Ichi Hope To Release New "Masterpiece" Titles This Year

By Sato . January 6, 2014 . 1:25am

It looks like Nippon Ichi Software recently teased a new game, and according to company president Sohei Niikawa, not only are they currently working on a brand new title for release this year, but two titles, and maybe even three.

“2013 was the 20th anniversary of our company’s establishment, and also the 10-year anniversary of Disgaea,” Niikawa said to 4Gamer. “The challenge is now for us to come up with two or three new masterpiece titles.”

“In that sense, in the year 2013, I felt that it was huge that we were able to release The Guided Fate Paradox and The Witch and the Hundred Knight,” continues the Nippon Ichi Software president. “We intend to take on various challenges in the year 2014. As for myself, personally, I’m presently overseeing two current titles.”

“I apologize for not being able to share more details for now, but we’re currently preparing so we can release one title this summer and another this winter. Please look forward to it,” Niikawa concludes.

Hmm… how many games can a large company develop within one year time?

    • Depends on the exact size of the company, their funds, how much is outsourced, whether or not they save time by reusing assets or engines, the size of each individual game, etc. A large company could potentially flood the market with a bunch of small and/or samey games without much effort, but they wouldn’t willingly do so as it would be financial and PR suicide.

      • CH3N9

…I wonder if that is the reason why Japan has late PS4 release date. To have more games for their hometown gamer.

Thanks for the info, not the answer I was expecting though *smile*.

  • Rockman

Still waiting for them to fix Disgaea D2.

    • SlickRoach

I haven’t beat D2 yet but what exactly is wrong with it?

      • pimpalicious

Freezing issues for the digital version, especially when using a fire spell(or an enemy uses one).

        • SlickRoach

Ah, I have the physical version which probably explains why I haven’t had that happen to me regardless of my only mage being a fire mage.

    • DesmaX

I think they said in the forums that the patch was already sent to Sony

      • GibbRS

I hope it comes soon. I’m still deathly afraid to use a fire spell in the item world for risk of losing hours of play time.

  • Will Disgaea 4 Return have an American release?
    I really hope it does

    • Arrngrim

Pretty good chance considering NISA and DIsgaea 4’s success here in NA.

    • SlickRoach

Pretty much 100% chance. If Infinite being a VN made it then surely D4 Return would.

    • I don’t see why it won’t. Hasn’t all the other main Disgaea titles come over?

  • Roberto

    NIS crossover

    • SlickRoach

If they made a NIS crossover fighting game the likes of that Dengeki one I’d lose my shit quicker than a teleporting toilet.

      • colorblindnightmare

That was one of the best analogies I’ve ever heard.

    • RichyGaming

I can imagine myself on training mode mode, as Adell with a prinny as the training dummy. And.. you know, practicing combos. Ugh, imagine those clashes and stuff.

      • Aspenharls

I second this. Item World as survival mode too.

      • Bentan

i want this to happen too

      • BeatTheGG

“Why does the health bar keep replenishing itself, dood!? Just let me die already!!”

Lol Nis make it happen XD

        • RichyGaming

10 more seconds until the battle ends “10 MORE SECONDS DOOD!”

15 minutes of training mode “WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS, DOOD?!”.

Seriously though, a Disgaea fighting game is demanded by a lot of fans :L if it ever happens, please let it be with Arc System Works oh my god. I’ll main Adell or Prinny, dood. Even if you just need to use the throw button to kill me lawl

    • A fighting game is such a good idea because they develop and publish sooo many games.

      • Ladius

Not to mention lots of NIS characters already have signature moves from their games’ special attacks. It could end up very well if NIS contracted a small beat’em up developer like Examu, they did a nice work with Aquapazza.

        • colorblindnightmare

Seriously…..Aquapazza? No. Being with my best friends, cracking a ton of jokes and alcohol couldn’t make that enjoyable. I’d give Arc a swing if that demonic warhead personally. They an amazing job with the Persona fighters, if they showed the same love and care they would probably yield an amazing result.

          • k.b.a.

the one thing i’ll give aquapazza is that the art seems to be better animated than chaos code, then again chaos code is an indie so kudos to them in general. granted i’d need hands on time with either before passing judgement.
just going by the trends do you think they’d make a ‘fighter’ or a fighting game i.e. one of those fighting games for people who don’t play fighting games? not trying to throw shade but i toss most games on two distinct sides of a fence. SF, Tekken, Soul, Marvel, KoF fall on the fighter side. Zatch bell, one piece don, digimon, naruto fall on the fighting game side. if ARC touches it then it’s likely going to be solid however. here’s hoping persona 3 protagonist makes it into arena. gods i’ve gotta play persona 2

  • makubexnas

    Dat prinnies hat..

    • SlickRoach

      Much swag. Many doods.

  • Mitsukiix

but none of there games were real masterpieces, or atleast were lacking something.

  • I bet one of them is the next Disgaea entry. At least, I hope so.

    • RichyGaming

It should be. They were talking about how they D5 was in the making even while Disgaea D2 was in the making.

  • EtherealEarth

Asagi’s original game would make one (with no heroes trying to take her scenes, of course).

    • Ryuki

It’s nice to see Asagi as a cameo but she really deserves her own game now. Then only will her suffering shall end.

  • SlickRoach

You know what this means, year of the empty wallet.

  • Ladius

I wasn’t impressed by Disgaea D2, but The Guided Fate Paradox blew me away and ended up being one of my favorite games of 2013.

I’m eagerly waiting for The Witch and the Hundred Knight’s localization and Battle Princess of Arcadia’s announcement, and I’m happy to see NIS is willing to tackle even more new IPs.

    • RichyGaming

As much as I like Laharl and the rest of the cast (Hate both his JP and ENG VA but Prinnies and Etna make up for that. Jesus christ Etna is awesome), Disgaea D2 didn’t appeal to me either.

      • DesmaX

I apreciate what it did (Giving the series a much needed Streamlining), but it didn’t really hold my attention.

I want to get back to it, but I’m too busy with GFP

        • RichyGaming

I wanna try GFP. But what’s keeping me from playing anything else atm are P4G and BBCP lol,..

          • colorblindnightmare

Both are excellent titles for distractions. The wait for cp is getting more difficult by the day though!

  • MaximDualBlade

Nippon Ichi Software games are always enjoyable, they are not a must buy for me, but always that I have the money to buy a game from them on launch day I never hesitate to buy them.

I’m looking forward to those new games. I hope for a PS4(I don’t know if it’s financially viable for them, and I don’t have a PS4 yet but a RPG is another good reason for me to buy one XD) /PSVITA title(and I mean a game for the vita, a la ettai hero Project that was on the psp) and a PS3 title would be awesome too.

  • Earthjolly

    DIsgaea and Persona crossover rofl

    • RichyGaming

Hell no. Well, I take that back, it’s not a horrible idea but the Disgaea series is known for exaggerating on power lol.

      • DesmaX

        Persona 3 protagonist uses Armageddon.

        All NIS characters laugh

        • Earthjolly

Valvatorez: Start back from level 1

  • DesmaX

    3 games, but he’s overseeing 2?

    Maybe they’re outsourcing one game?

  • Learii

how about NIS work with Temco Koei so we get a RPG with DW style lol

    • Sylveria Shini

Oh god.. Dynasty Warriors with Disgaea’s special attack sensibilities.

      • Learii

lol ya just thinking about it want me to try it out lol you see Nintendo work Temco Koei with zelda on wii u

  • Jettythesunfish

    Here’s hoping for a Prinny 3, dood!

  • mike dickson

    i want that hat

  • artemisthemp

I still waits on Visual Novel Nippon made to get localized

  • ivanchu77

Can´t wait to hear more news of their new games, I love nearly everything they have made ^_^

  • ZekeFreek

    Niikawa is my homeboi.

  • k.b.a.

what exactly is a NIS masterpiece to begin with?

  • Earthjolly
