If My Heart Had Wings Is Getting A New… Something… Published By 5pb

What you’re seeing in the video teaser above is If My Heart Had Wings: Cruise Sign. We aren’t quite sure what it is, but it’s being published by 5pb in Japan.

Last year, we brought word that If My Heart Had Wings was being localized into English. Telling the tale of Aoi Minase, a boy who returns to his hometown after having his dreams shattered and meeting wheelchair-bound Kotori Hanabe, it was one of those rare visual novel games that got itself rated by the ESRB and PEGI.

It was rated T for Teen by the by, as the English release pulled all mature content. This original title was created by Japanese devs Pulltop and brought over to the west by MoeNovel with assistance from Active Gaming Media and MangaGamer.

However, in Japan, there was also a fan disc for the game, titled If My Heart Had Wings: Flight Diary. And now, it looks like somehow, 5pb’s gotten the rights to publish the next… whatever it is that Pulltop are creating… in Cruise Sign. Another fandisc?

The interesting thing here is that there’s nary a hint as to what Cruise Sign will be about. Cruise Sign’s background wallpaper choice, for instance, is exactly the same as Flight Diary’s, though, so perhaps that does allude to it being a fandisc of some sort.

We’ll keep you posted when we learn more.

From what I’ve heard Moenovel did a bad job and completely got rid of all the ero-scenes. I have no idea why there is any interest in this game/series, it’s a pretty run-of-the-mill eroge with nothing that particularly stands out. Every summer we get summer themed eroge like this; the typical blue skies and grassy hills aesthetic.

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

I had the same impression. If I wanted a slice of life romantic visual novel I’ll stick with ef which is pretty awesome.

      • Kelohmello

Well that’s the thing innit, when you finish ef what are you going to do? Read it over and over? It doesn’t have gameplay, it’s a novel. What’s there to stick with?

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

The plot. It’s the least interactive VN I’ve EVER played but I still think it’s pretty good.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Read the next one. Or make sure you have gotten all the routes. The ‘gameplay’ is the reading or figuring out which ‘bad’ choices you need to play through to unlock all the CGs and scenes.

          • Kelohmello

By “finish”, I thought it’d be obvious, but I meant the entirety of it. Unlike standard games, I’d find it very odd if someone finished the entirety of a VN and then immediately started reading it over again, much less choose not to read something new in the same vein in order to read something already read. If it were a standard video game I’d think otherwise.

I heard they even removed kissing, which seems really silly.

      • winsantz

Uh, there’s definitely still kissing. It’s described in the text, and even depicted in CGs (look at the bottom image on their official site if you don’t believe me: http://moenovel.com/imh/). What they removed is the cut-in graphics that show the characters actually swapping spit. I find that a bit annoying myself, but it’s a long way from removing kissing entirely.

        • Lifesong

They removed “lips touching”. The kissing scenes they show don’t have any lips. I kid you not.

        • Crimson_Cloud

Indeed. People were angry for a reason but they went overboard in some cases where they stated that there wasn’t romance at all. The kissing, hugging scenes are still there… they just edited a lot of dialog and censored the images (no pantyshots, girls had towels in baths etc.) and h-scenes were removed. Some routes were more butchered then the others. I was more disappointed in the whole amateurish translation though. Lots of errors and spelling mistakes with honorifics used at one point then forgotten later.

    • Lynx

The story for one was actually really charming, but you wouldn’t know that if all you’ve read was Moenovel’s “version.”

I was glad they got rid of the ero scenes. Didn’t really fit. However, when you go to the lengths of censoring the kisses and completely rewriting scenes into completely different scenes, you’ve crossed the line.

Thats not even mentioning the translation. Even with my basic moon, it was bad.

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

I understand removing ero scenes. I’m up for that unless they found a way to make sex scenes instead of porn scenes (Which is how they feel a good 90% of the time).

However, removing kisses, covering up partial nudity, removing dirty jokes and filling the VN with horrendous typos is not cool.

        • M’iau M’iaut

There is definitely a real complaint that they went too far with the edits. Checking their twitter and other media does seem to show however, that they did grab some of the pure-PG ELVN audience they were so clearly going for. That is perhaps bot a bad thing if that audience is willing to do more than get their feet wet. The English side of things has also been hinting at something for some time — I can’t really imagine a Japanese fan-disk with other character’s routes or a gaiden is it.

        • Shippoyasha

I am not sure I agree with taking out the sex scenes either. You can usually skip them over if you just want to get to the next story scene anyway. Plus, I’m sick of western gamers thinking sex has absolutely no place in gaming or that it’s ‘sick’, ‘perverted’ or whatever. It is what it is. It’s a thing that happens in a dating scenario.

That said, I can sympathize with how difficult it must be to localize a game that has full sex scenes in the west. However, if they had the choice to not censor, then they shouldn’t have. The ‘right’ thing to do with these games is to just never edit them to begin with.

      • Mirin

Honestly there wasn’t much to the story that warranted a translation, let alone 5pb involvement. Sure it wasn’t outright terrible, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been done many times before and in fact the month it was released there were 2 other very similar titles as expected (One by Windmill I believe). And yes, I have read it, I got the physical copy back in Summer 2012 from Amiami when it was new.

Normally for a game to be translated there is normally a an anime adaption or some kind of extended hype/merchandise, but there isn’t much reasoning behind behind translating this.

Why 5pb is interested is anyone’s guess. I suppose the logical conclusion would be that they are going for a console port, but one would think they have more important things to be doing rather than porting a very bog-standard eroge. At least Memories Off and Tayutama had a fan following of some description.

  • Niyari

the still with everyone at the end that says “CRUISE SIGN” is actually from the fandisc. seeing as how 5pb is involved, it’s probably going to be a PS3/Vita port of both of the games

    • winsantz

Yeah, a console port seems pretty likely. If that does turn out to be the case, wouldn’t it represent a sort of validation for MoeNovel? JAST released the PC version of Eien no Aselia without the ero content, and most of the community seemed to be OK with that since it had been gotten all-ages releases on PS2 and PSP (but not PC) in Japan. The order of events is different here, but wouldn’t this be pretty much the same thing? I guess it’s not completely the same, since a Japanese console port of KonoSora probably wouldn’t have all the non-ero content cuts that MoeNovel made to get IMHHW down to a T rating, but still…

      • Nanaya Nazrin

-all-ages releases on PS2 and PSP (but not PC)

Not exactly true. The all-ages version DID get a port, however it was bundled with Seinarukana. As it was, it never much attention since Seinarukana is the main course. I doubt Xuse and JAST would make a PC port for the English audiences unless the materials are already available.

        • winsantz

          Ah, I stand corrected then.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

If My Heart Had Wings, i can use a keyblade

  • Ladius

This is likely an All-Ages console version of the original game (with its fandisc, maybe), the same thing happened with lots of successful eroge licenses.

  • CH3N9

    Yeah, Fan-disc! *joy*
Hehehe, I hope MoeNovel will not publish this. *evil smirk*
*clench fist* I sincerely hope I can punch someone over the internet.

  • s07195

I actually bought the English version, but haven’t had time to finish it… Maybe this IS a fandisk though.
