Final Fantasy X Writer Shares His Thoughts And Memories Of The Series

There’s been some talk about Final Fantasy scenario writer Kazushige Nojima wanting to see a possible Final Fantasy X-3, but now that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has been released in Japan, he shares some of his thoughts on the series and his work behind it, during an interview with Famitsu magazine.

Starting with Final Fantasy X-2, Famitsu asks him to share his thoughts of the time when Square Enix first decided to start working on the game.

“‘Huh?!’ and ‘Seriously?’ were my honest thoughts at the time,” shares Nojima. “And especially having Yuna even get a new costume design.”

Then, Famitsu asks him to walk us through the process of writing the scenario for Final Fantasy X-2 and Last Mission.

“We had several ending patterns prepared, but when it came to ‘what about a happy ending?’ at the time, I thought ‘no, there can’t be one’,” shares Nojima. “However, after the game was released and I was able to see the fan reaction to it, I changed my mind.”

Next, Famitsu asks him about his thoughts about when the HD Remaster version was first announced.

“I also thought ’Huh?!’ and ‘Seriously?’ for this as well,” shares Nojima with a laugh. “In the past, when we had a new console generation, we couldn’t play older games on them, but recently I felt that we really can’t lower our guard for that anymore.”

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster includes a brand new 30-minute audio drama featuring newly recorded voices written by Nojima. Famitsu asks him about his thought process during the writing of it.

“I wrote it while thinking ‘this should be a game’,” says Nojima. “So it was a mix of thinking ‘ahh, all the spoilers’ and ‘but I would want to surprise them’ and things like that. For the record, there’s a plot from start to finish, and if there’s some way we can have it show up elsewhere… well, so I’ve said to Square Enix.”

Nojima has been working on the Final Fantasy X series for a while now, and Famitsu asks who the easiest character to write in the series was.

“It’d have to be Tidus during the first half of Final Fantasy X,” answers the writer. “He was always full of questions and such, so it was pretty easy.” That said, Nojima continues, Tidus needs to search for answers in the second half of the game, and Nojima struggled alongside him.

Then, Famitsu asks who was the character he had the most trouble writing for.

“It’d have to be Lulu,” says Nojima. “If she were just cute, it would’ve been simpler, but I had no samples in mind of how a pretty or beautiful lady like her would think or live. I don’t think that Watanabe (Daisuke) who worked with me had any ideas either.”

Nojima recently mentioned that he’d like to see a sequel to the series with a possible Final Fantasy X-3. Famitsu asks him what kind of story would he write if a sequel were to be put into motion.

“It’s a secret,” says Nojima with a laugh.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will be available on March 18 in North America and March 21 in Europe for PlayStation 3 and Vita.

As much as I disagree with an “X-3″, you can’t just put out that kind of new material and not expect people to question it and want something conclusive…. How many more times does Tidus have to “disappear”?! :’(

  • Samsara09

well, the guy is having fun with his job,”ironically”.Guess some people are going to get dashed with X-3,lol.Quite sad!

    • Nice Boat Quatro

I hope one of those guys isn’t Tidus considering how bad his luck has been

      • James Williams

I’m sure he’ll keep his head held high.

  • TheExile285

    This guy………………. >_>

  • konsama

Obv in X-3, a misterious purple to pink haired girl appears in Spira, becoming the fourth member AND new leader of the Gullwings. keke.

Then around past half game, the name in title screen will become Lightning Forever: Final Fantasy X-3

      Rotfl

    • Samsara09

well, the fans said that square Enix should give Lightning a rest…but well, the fans thenselves won’t let it happen.Man,must suck to have such a bipolar thing, wouldn’t you agree?

        LOLOLOLOLOLOL

    • Suriel Cruz

      LOL!!!
      more like…

      • Aspenharls

Which will also be part of the Chrono Trigger Canon.

    • Arrngrim

Don’t forget she arrives in Spira riding a train and she hops out of it…

    • Ric Vazquez

I laughed so damn hard at this XD

  • DesmaX

Would it be bomb kicking in X-3?

  • Arizato

X-2 was bad enough on it’s own (Though the battle system which is actually very good and entertaining). Please don’t make FF X-3… But if you are at least make it into a prequel with Braska or something. Don’t continue the story after X-2.

    • Xerain

It sounds like the concept of X-2 was conceived by someone else and handed to him to write, judging by his “huh, seriously?” reaction being the same as just about everyone else when they heard of teh concept for X-2.

So that being said I’d think a new game conceived of by the guy who actually wrote the story would turn out a lot differently.

      • Yuna

        Toriyama……

      • shafiq95

didnt nojima also did the fanfiction that is FFX2.5,after reading that,i dont think you would want FFX3 anymore….

        Tidus kicking a bomb,yep

  • Gemlit

Honestly, in X-3 I would want to travel to and from Zanarkand and the world in the past before Sin first appeared. Also, I would like to travel undersea in search of past forgotten relics/monsters/etc. like underwater caverns just like the previous other games. You know, build on what Square should have learned from their other games.

  • emma s

    Oohh I think they’ve already started X-3. I can’t wait I am so excited!

  • emma s

    Can’t wait to see X-3!

  • Nice Boat Quatro

For the love of Tidus, if X-3 is made at least forget whatever was going through your mind when writing the novel. The audio drama was passable to me though.

    • Detrimont

Did you actually read the full thing, or just the summary?

  • Rogerrmark

Strange. It’s OK to post hate comments about FFXIII and Lightning, but forbidden to post a funny picture about FFX and Tidus kicking a bomb (cause, ya know, it’s the last ”good” FF, made by Squaresoft so it’s God-tier and people can’t even make fun of it because it’s one of the 7 capital sins)

    Ok Siliconera

    • 3PointDecoupage

If it helps, you can make fun of X-2 as much as you want.
Also where is this Tidus picture?

      • Rogerrmark

Somebody deleted the comment, and I didn’t save the link :/

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I wasn’t the one who deleted it, but that wasn’t the reason it was deleted (from what I’m seeing)
Animated gifs aren’t allowed and are deleted on the spot. (if you can link it without it being shown, then that’s okay)

      • Rogerrmark

Okay, thank you. I’ll remember next time then.

  • Detrimont

well, fro mthe ffx 2.5 novel and the audio drama, it’s kind of obvious the x-3 will end up being made.
    SPOILER
sin is going to return in some form

    • shafiq95

which basically contradict everything that happened in FFX and FFX-2,though i dont really give a shit about ffx 2

  • Aoshi00

I pre-ordered the 2.5 novel, but from what I read of reviews, it seems to be even more horrible than doujinshi.. If a work is good and it ended, pls just let it stay that way, don’t add more subpar sequels or unnecessary stuffs to ruin a perfectly good story, X had a beautiful ending.. if S-E has so much time on their hands, finish up FF15, and start working on 16.. start fresh w/ another good one.. if 2.5 is as bad as most say, I’m scared to read it :(.. just like Watsuki, Rurouni Kenshin ended, no need to draw parallel universe…

    • Randy Marsh

Oh Aoshi be prepared, because FFX2.5 is pretty bad. :/ But it does lead into some of the reasons on why Tidus and Yuna are kind of in a rocky relationship in FFX -Will- and why “it” has returned to Spira. Give it a read when you get it and try to erase it from your memory after you’re finished, I’m still trying to do so.

      • Aoshi00

dang.. I thought FF13 Episode 0 was so good in filling in the holes of 13 (made into a 2-part drama CDs), I was looking forward to the new 30-min drama CD and FFX 2.5 novel.. most reviews said the same thing if you were a fan of the original, you would wish to forget both of these new additions as to not to tarnish the good memories :(.. I guess I should give it a read since it cost me $21.99 :(..

      • Ric Vazquez

        Has someone translated it already?

        • Randy Marsh

Not sure friend, but Randy owns the book and reads Japanese.

          • Ric Vazquez

I’m getting fluent on oral japanese, but I just can’t seem to finally get to studying hiragana/katakana/kanji. Looksso damn complicated.

    • Guest

      SPOILERS (?)

I heard Tidus dies by kicking a mine that he thought looked like a blitzball… Square-Enix is a mess.

  • 3PointDecoupage

He had trouble writing Lulu… Guess thats why they replaced her with Painein the second.

    • Aleister Crowley

Actually it was because she was SO deadpan it would hurt the whole Charlie’s Angels feel. That’s why Paine is basically a toned down version of Lulu.

      • Chiupon

lulu would probably shoot down everything ridiculous everything and the posing and YRP stuff. like it would lose camp so fast.

        • Nice Boat Quatro

No, after mission 2 she just quits.

  • Ethan_Twain

Yeah, let’s have some love for Lulu! She is an introverted adult woman not given to emotional outburst or to letting other people walk over her. Her relationship to the protagonist could perhaps best be described as “tolerant”. She rarely commands attention, but the impression is always that she could if she chose to.

She is a very unique female character in JRPGs – and the game is all the stronger for it. I’m grateful that Mr. Nojima didn’t just make her the millionth clingy cute optimistic female side kick. The extra effort was worth it.

    • Ronldbx6

I just learned the word introvert yesterday from a yahoo article and it completely describes me.

  • 3PointDecoupage

Heres a memory of FFX I have. Theres a part in the game where Yuna gets kidnapped. Tidus, Kimahri, and Lulu chase after her, and they jump onto a boat sailing away, and I remember thinking “How the hell does Lulu run and jump in that dress?”

    • Kitestwinblades

I thought it was funny how they avoided making all the cool characters swim underwater. Auron, Lulu, Yuna, and Kimahri. Couldnt pay them to swim but they’ll look epic near water in a cutscene anyday xD

I can totally understand why… but the party setup and the underwater breathing sure is convenient. Its still amazing that they had underwater fighting/sports though. Really fun ( ̄ー ̄)

    • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Hayayandere Hayayandere

What puzzled me even more was how did Lulu slide on that chain with that dress when they tried to stop Yuna’s wedding.

      • Norra

        Kimahri was carrying her. xD

        • Kitestwinblades

Hold the phone, that ACTUALLY happened!?
          hahaha Sneaky move Kimahri xD

But isn’t Kimahri barefoot/bare pawed…? And Wakka only wears sandals. Aw, screw grinding and underwater breathing logic – doesn’t matter your party is doing something epic!

      • Aleister Crowley

She didn’t. She was on Kimarhi’s lap.

    • Nice Boat Quatro

      The magic of Spira

    • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

She jumps to the soil and she bounces farther distances with her boobies!

  • gRiMmYdArK13

FFX-3 could be about Tidus and Yuna’s child!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      and Lightning -_-

  • Kitestwinblades

Current Gen Blitzball, more Aeons, another great music score, and less lightning(literally lightning strikes- thunder plains) and I’ll totally be sold. PS3 is fine too but what I wouldn’t give for epic summons on the next hardware. OVERDRIVE

  • new_tradition

lol, Nojima, trying to be all coy ;D

I have a hard time believing a third FFX installment is NOT in the works. A game would make the most sense to boot. Why else put that drama in the game release that extends the story?

I think the real question is how far along it is *ponders*

  • Seven of The Scions

If so, then please bring Sir Auron back….

  • $61526767

Didn’t really put much effort into these games.. Sorta sucks I have been missing out from the original. Going to be playing the HD Remaster and know why everyone dislikes the sequel. I haven’t completed the first one yet.

  • Tom_Phoenix

While it’s certainly not going to stop Square Enix, X really doesn’t need another sequel. In fact, one could argue it didn’t need X-2 either. So Square Enix’s time and effort would be better spent elsewhere.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw5kwim-O-E

  • Aleister Crowley

“For the record, there’s a plot from start to finish”

No, Nojima. No there isn’t. My guess is that the audio drama is there just to cause a reaction out of the people who thought the story ended 10 years ago and interpret that as people wanting more FFX. Not to mention the fanfiction level novel written by the same person.

  • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

    >“‘Huh?!’ and ‘Seriously?’ were my honest thoughts at the time,” shares Nojima.

quite funny since this is my reaction on X-2.5 after reading it.

  • Slickyslacker

    How do I remove existence

  • Alexandra Cordes

After finding out about the extra things written after X-2, I just…
As depressing as X’s ending was, at least it was beautiful.
The way things are going now–no, the way they already went in those forms… I wish they had never made any sequels.
The second game does have a happy ending and it made me happy, but what happens afterwards is just too depressing to bear.
    I can’t, Square. Stop ruining games I care about….

  • James Williams

Afte tthe whole 2.5 fiasco i don’t even want to buy the HD collections anymore, if it’s going to fund that awful junk.

  • KnifeAndFork

After reading about that awful FFX novella, I do not want them doing anything about a X-3 sequel.

  • Ryuki

Uh wondering but what’s so bad about the 2.5 novel? I’ve haven’t read it. o-o..

    • Alexandra Cordes

Do yourself a favor and NEVER READ IT.

      • Ryuki

Message received loud and clear. o-o

  • DarkWaterClone

I hope if there is a FFX-3 it stars Jecht. I always wanted to know more about his character. I think a prequel is the best way that way Auron can be in the game. The story would be about Braska wanting to destroy sin. We know he does it. But we don’t have the whole true story.

    • Steven Higgins

It won’t be. the audio drama that sets it up clearly happens after the end of X-2
If X-3 does well, maybe then we’ll get X-0.

      • Nice Boat Quatro

I would honestly prefer SE to focus on XV as I fear whatever they could make in X games.

        • Steven Higgins

          Doesn’t matter. Different teams.

So, has it become clear at this point that the company, if they had any shred of dignity at one point, has decided that selling-out their IPs and the IPs of other companies they bought-out, has no longer a real desire to create games, but shallow cash-ins? I know life is a buisness to most, but even so, many gamers/fans of many of the SquareEnix (Eidos) owned franchises have seen something going wrong with this company of late – that former mystery and magic of the franchises have gone amiss.

Has the quality gone down? Have most of us just gotten older? Are the games becoming more about the cashflow than the actual experience?

Respect is something this company used to have among many of their fans, and now these days, many call them in the likes of that as EA – selling-out – SquareEnix having lost its own company’s respect to the point of dwindling sales and loss of trust among its consumers.

    Is it deserved or undeserved?
