A Closer Look At The Updated Lara Croft In Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

By Ishaan . January 21, 2014 . 11:26am

As previously reported, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will update Lara Croft’s character model with a number of improvements, including different materials to depict blood, sweat, mud and more. In a new developer diary video, executive producer Scot Amos runs down the list of upgrades to Lara’s model.

One of the major changes to the Lara model is that her head has been “rebuilt from scratch” with more detail and improvements to her eyes, nose, mouth and cheeks.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is slated for release on January 28th.

I like the new face model better than the previous one.

However, all those fancy lighting and physics effects seem like a
waste when you see they haven’t addressed one thing that is far more
    important: FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.

Sure, the model itself looks nice, but when it comes to animation,
it’s still stuck in the uncanny valley. In this video alone Lara is
shown in a lot of situations that demand better expressions, and yet she
has almost the same face in all of them.

Yeah, it’s nice that her equipment shakes realistically while she
moves, but that doesn’t make much of a difference to make her feel like a real person when her face looks so wrong.

I don’t want to be too harsh, but seriously, AAA games really need to get better their priorities.

I agree, the most money goes into those extra effects and textures, but it adds nothing to gameplay… I’m hoping with the increase in ram, devs dont just throw it all at graphics

Well, we already know this is going to run at 30fps…

That’s the face of “I already live this it does not amuse me”

I’m still not sold on this. I prefer the old Lara head model, and this doesn’t seem all that improved to me, at least enough for a double dip, especially considering the fact I played it on PC…

Okay,, okay, new coat of paint. So, where’s the stuff that actually matters?

I wonder if this amount of detail was given to the other characters. Anyways, I beat singleplayer 100%, will there be anything new for me besides adding a bit of realism to Laura’s model?

      Who is Laura?

      • RagingTiger44

        Lara. It was a typo.

seems scot amos has a little trouble deciding whether to call her lara or laura..(hint, it’s lara)
