By Cheng Kai . February 3, 2014 . 3:42am

At Taipei Game Show, we got to play Dekamori: Senran Kagura, a rhythm meets cooking game for PlayStation Vita. Here’s a look at the game and its hyper fish chopping action.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

    Was it fun?

  • Anesia Hunter

the sound, the sound… way to go youtube… ~_~ anyways, it looks fun. i just wish we had sound.

    • PreyMantis

I say just upload it on another website. Screw Youtube!

  • It seems pretty tame until the loser is revealed. Really Revealed…
It would be interesting to see if XSeed decides to grab this one!

    • Duo Maxwell

For this game I don’t think we will need localization o understand what’s going on, really.

      • Kayseur

Problem is, it’s a digital-only title, so a localization would make sense here.

  • Raine

Overexcessive nudity and Mindboggling Jiggle Physics are okay.

    BUT NOT NIPPLES!?!?!????!?

    WTF JAPAN!?!?!?

    • brostar

It’s not Japan it’s just Sony’s policy worldwide. They will not allow adult content and I guess nipples would just pull the rating too far.

      • drproton

Every God of War game has nipples. I’m pretty sure it’s Japanese content guidelines, not necessarily Sony policy.

      • Raine

As drproton says, Nipples are allowed in God of War which were made by… oh look. Motherf*cking SONY!!!

        So again. WTF JAPAN!?

        • PreyMantis

Yeah… I don’t think showing adolescent females’ milk dispensers will go well…

        • brostar

Blame Cero then. They’re very harsh with their game ratings. Yet you can fully bare tits in an anime blu-ray.

          • Anesia Hunter

and those blu-rays usually aren’t cheap >.> so the kiddies picking up booby blu-rays probably doesn’t happen too often.

          • brostar

Everything in Japan is very expensive anyway. About $80 for a new game on the PS3/X360. About $60 for a 3DS/Vita game.

          • dark-kyon

yeah,gta5 was awful censored in japan.

      • Have you played Grand Theft Auto V? I’m sure Sony has no problem with that kind of content.

    • dark-kyon

is not sony,is japan, the rating cero in japan do not let show nipples in console games, only in pc you can show that.

  • Amalaira

I think that’s all the game is trying to say.

  • Kayriss Wins

@ 6:58 – “aaaand… don- SWEET JESUS THERE’S MORE?!” that last round looked ruff. I love Rhythm games but I always get the feeling of underachievement if I don’t perfect something lol.

  • Varnes

    • Both have the exact same ripping clothes scenes, and from what ive seen, clothes too (but aprons)… Unless you have a fetish for seeing girls cooking and love a lot rythm games, i’d recommend just shinovi versus. This kinda feels like a mini game of shinovi versus lol. Well, i do love the pics that appear in the loading screens, and im curious about the CGs of this game

      • Shippoyasha

It is a game meant to be there to make waiting for the next Shinovi Versus game easier though. Can’t wait for the comedy and character songs personally. If the cooking rhythm is fun, it’s a nice bonus but I can dig pure fanservice for Senran fans.

      • dragoon_slayer12

After reading that statement, I checked YouTube for that in Versus, and I was bummed to see that…. I’ll still get the game when if it comes, but that sucks….

        • Kumiko Akimoto

Actually while the ripping is the same they’ve never shown the loser outside of the clothing break session or the visual novel scenes in story mode like they did in the video.
Though it’s no doubt they are using the same engine but this is supposed to be light fare.

          • What?, there are novels part too in shinovi versus, and if u ripped them of all ur clothes, she appears without them in the novel part. You not only see the girl in the ripping scenes. If u say we dont see them cooking in versus then i agree wih you

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I’m not talking about during the dialogue, I meant in battle. In this they actually show a losing scene after the initial ripping. That doesn’t happen in versus and the novels scenes only happen in story mode.
They are using the same system but it looks like they added and changes a few things. Is all I’m saying.

          • I’m sorry, I still don’t understand what you mean with “losing scene” could u please be more specific?. In versus they show the girl ‘s fave and stuff after getting her clothes ripped, when you make her full naked that is, using the secret lvl 3 ninjutsu u unlock in main story

          • Kumiko Akimoto

You did see the scene of asuka crying after she lost the battle right? The don’t show that after their clothes are ripped at the end of the battle they just show them falling down and then your character talks and then it goes to their win screen.

          • This? she does it, but as i told u, u have to do it with the 3rd secret ninjutsu, win her with that so u get the full clothes rip scene

    • Rinkawa Erion

If ever this is going to be localized…No!
I’d still get the Japanese ver..
      Very simple.
Coz I’m very sure it will be censored… =.=

      • wyrdwad

See, this is part of why I always hate to see any game get censored. It gets people EXPECTING censorship!

We’re the ones who published Senran Kagura Burst, and we’d be the most likely candidates to publish Dekamori as well. And if we did, I think the chances of us censoring it would be very slim — at least, beyond removing the ages of the characters as we did in Burst. Which is censorship, granted, and I wish we hadn’t done it… but I don’t think that’s the sort of censorship you mean, nor the kind you’d care about. ;)

        • Kayriss Wins

Censoring the age seemed a little sneaky, would have never guessed Hibari was actually younger than Mirai lol. Also @Rinkawa Erion Shinovi Versus IS censored, it has novelty censoring and light beam censoring.

        • dragoon_slayer12

When you say “we”, do you mean we (the public) in general, or we (private community) as an industry professional?

Either way, I don’t know what the legal age of concent is in Japan, but despite concealing age is effective as is, being “first year” high school students doesn’t hide the common knowledge of an underage student (unless the student was held back at least 4 times before getting to high school, but then that’s too much filler content).

I don’t know why Japan loves using underage girls as set symbols for their animated stories (regardless of medium) if some type of censorship is a concern, either domestic or abroad.

          • Kayriss Wins

The legal age for consent in Japan is 13 I believe… so you can see why underage woman are popular there… *ahem*

          • dragoon_slayer12

            A) Damn that’s young (not judging, some girls that age can look 20,but still)
            B) the more you know, huh? Still, college girls are more *cough* fun XD

          • wyrdwad

No, I work for XSEED, so I meant we as in the company. ;)

And while I still don’t think that would be a problem (there’s no actual sex, to my knowledge, and that’s pretty much what it would take for the game to warrant an AO rating and/or challenge existing decency laws or social mores), you’ll notice we got around that problem in Senran Kagura Burst by never actually using the words “high school” in our translation. These are students, studying at a private academy. Which is all true, and completely accurate to the Japanese… it just happens to be a private *high school* called Hanzo Academy.

And while the removal of the characters’ ages does bother me on a personal level (since I’m very highly opposed to censorship in all forms), the absence of the words “high school” does not, simply because the Japanese text also rarely (if ever) addresses the grade level of either school, settling instead for simply referring to everyone as a generic student and addressing their grade levels relative to one another (freshman, sophomore, etc.).

I anticipate similar language usage in Dekamori as well, so I really don’t see there being any reason we’d have to tone down the smut levels were we to release this game. ;)

          • dragoon_slayer12

For starters, I would like to be “star struck” for a moment and say how grateful I am for industry members (like you) to take time to engage in social interactions with the populous they entertain. You guys (Xseed) are the modern day Working Designs, and I love you guys for it (and thank you so much for bringing Burst stateside, I love it, and so does my 6 year old daughter. She doesn’t see “over sexualized girls”, she sees kick ass “ninja girls in power”). your bringing obscure, niche, and risky titles to the fans that want it, and keep an ear out for games we want but nobody is willing to gamble for. Working Designs brought me my favorite rpg games ever (lunar and arc the lad series’), and you guys are doing the same thing. and I would like to say, truly, honestly, and personally, thank you.

Other than that, I feel your sentiments on censorship (check my other comments for that), so I know how you feel about censorship. It’s a shame we have a rating system that serves a purpose, gets neglected, and creative minds have to then censor themselves in prevention of further backlash due to “lazy parenting” (gta scandals would’ve never happened if the dumb parents read what that big M meant when looking at the box at the register). Everybody suffers. US for experiencing altered content, you for altering it, and the creator for seeing it’s creation “tarnished”. That’s like putting clothes on Greek sculptors because of the nudity.

And for Shits and giggles, I know your not at liberty to answer this, but I’ll ask, how’s Shinovi coming along. XD

            Once again, thanks.

Side note; yes I took the opportunity to be “star struck” , but in a day and age where we can disregard appreciation due to easy communication, I’ve never been at liberty to do so (and don’t follow celebs on social media sites cuz its unlikely celebs would actually respond to me, or anybody, personally).

          • wyrdwad

Always grateful for that, but really, I’m a fanboy first and a translator second. I’ve gotten into trouble for running my mouth (er, hands) off in comments already, and probably will again. And the same goes for a few others here.

Basically, you can always count on us to get down in the trenches with the fans… whether management likes it or not. ;) Heheh…

Very glad to hear you and your daughter are enjoying Senran Kagura Burst, though! Though I would suggest if we ever do release Shinovi Versus, you take a look at the game before you let your daughter play it, as it’s… quite a bit *more* risque than its 3DS counterpart, both in terms of visual content and story.

…And it sounds like Dekamori will be more risque still, based on what Takaki-san has revealed thus far! “So gradually, I didn’t even notice,” to quote The Simpsons. ;)

          • dragoon_slayer12

In regards to the Vita titles, she won’t even know they exist. XD. I didn’t even know Versus was as revealing as Dekamori till I read a comment here and then checked YouTube to see. That’s too much for my kids. My daughter got into the series cuz I was doing a marathon run of the anime and she loved seeing the girls fight (if a female is in a game or cartoon, that is the coolest character and she wants to know everything about them. She knows star fire and raven, but no clue what the other titans’ names are). When I told her of the game, I made sure it wasn’t too revealing, and explained why they were in their “underwear”, and she thought it was cool. So don’t worry, I’m doing my part. ;-). Don’t know if your a parent, but the coolest part about it is getting them into the same stuff you like(d). I’ve been gaming since I was 2 (26 now), so it’s awesome to see them play so young too. But as with everything, monitoring them and teaching right from wrong (in terms to “just a game” vs “real life” consequences) is key.

          • wyrdwad

Sounds to me like you’re an awesome parent. If only more parents followed your lead! ;)

          • dragoon_slayer12

Thanks for that. My first nephew was born when I was 7, and we used to play games all the time. By the time GTA III came out, is when the “parent” side of me came out. A game that violent shouldn’t be in their hands, but I didn’t care, it was fun, but I did have to explain to them why it was okay to pick up a hooker and bash her brains in in the game and not in real life. XD joys of being an uncle, parenting lessons without the backlash. XD he’s 19 now and said on numerous occasions I’m his favorite (same with his 17 year old brother), so I think I’m doing good. ;-)

    • Why do they need to censor this stuff? Its not like children are going to play it or anything.

      • DarkLight

Well you know parents buy anything for kids these days. That said I’m all against censorship but yeah bring it over!

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Because consoles and handhelds don’t allow full frontal nudity. Maybe a nip here and there but other then that it’s a no no.Ass is fine though

        • kmantle

Both The Witcher and L.A. Noire had full frontal female nudity

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Like i said a nip here and there and maybe a bit of the pelvic zone but other then that it’s a no no

        • npcomplete

Japan does not allow any nudity whatsoever for CERO, not even a nip for CERO-Z. But the ESRB does allow full nudity for M-rated games.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

A nip here and there and ethier a hairless or hairy pubic area for a few seconds doesn’t really count as full nudity.

The only difference between the two is the japs use censoring on those problem areas to allow it to be shown for more than a few seconds.

          • npcomplete

I’d refer you to God of War for an example of what I mean and to show the big difference:

(to be clear CERO only applies to consoles and no other media which does allow such in Japan)

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I know what happens in god of war. But nips here and there and public hair aren’t the same as detailed gential

      • Romancer Ecclesia

It looks like a cooler version of cooking mama. I would definitely if I was 10 years old.

  • dragoon_slayer12

    2 things.
    1) going full frontal at the end to just have it censored in game is just dumb. Either show it all in glorious perverted glory, or cut it out. I understand showing cooch will be the most “appalling” thing (plus, giving it the adult only death treatment), but if your going to “show” it, just go the full mile. (not that I’m dying to see it, but I hate censorship, especially in game/movie/comic/etc)

    B) holy hell that looks very intimidating. I like rhythm games like parappa and bust a groove (move), and hopefully this has music to help with the button inputs, but that third round makes me scared to buy the game if it releases in NA.

Other than that, I hope every title makes it this way. I love the anime, plan to buy the Manga, and love Burst (despite my kids deleting my record while I was in the middle of chapter 3, with asuka at level 60), and been dying to play shinovi

    • Freakmasta

If this was uncensored, then this will not be released on the vita (or any other console besides PC). And cutting it all out will just remove all the appeal of the franchise. So just be happy you get to see that much skin.

And it looks like the player was playing on the hardest difficulty so I can see it being overwhelming.

      • dragoon_slayer12

My wife hates the anime and burst because it demoralizes women (first time she ever said anything like that, and we’ve been together 10 years). I was never interested in the series for fan service (if it’s not part of the story, I actually think it’s silly. Not saying I dislike it, but unnecessary nudity is still unnecessary nudity. Toxic Avenger IV is the best example of that), but I liked how they “censored” it in the show and game. Revealing enough “to want more”, but tame enough to be “risqué” at best. This is borderline hentai (or whatever that genre of games is called) with that final scene. And the way I look at it, if your gonna go that way, either go hard or go home (no pun). If it was Burst level revealing/nudity, I’d be fine, but to show a fully nude model to then cover it up IN GAME, I think it’s just dumb.

If this helps, I am the type of person who refuses to watch movies on cable TV due to commercials and censorship, cuz I hate censorship as a whole (I’m an adult, so if I want to see something graphic, I will. I understand the purpose of it and respect it though). But when a R rated movie purposely censors itself as part of the movie (rather than a made for TV edit), I think it’s stupid (unless it’s a humorous censor, like the FCC episode of family guy, or the “black bar fail” in jackass 3.5), I think it’s just stupid. Go hard or go home, period. (ex; comics and Manga, guy will stand full frontal in broad daylight, yet his entire crotch area is the only thing in a shadow).

Yeah yeah, they need to censor it in order to stay on consoles (as no console allows anything above M and it’s equivalent), but if your going that far, go all the way. This is teetering the edge without a line for the sake of doing so

        • Kumiko Akimoto

Isn’t all nudity unnecessary in the world?

Also nudity can be their just for nudity sake it’s fun and you get screenshots out of it.

          • dragoon_slayer12

Nudity can be “necessary” if it’s there for the story (like the clothing damage=power loss in this series, or a romantic sex scene, as no “romantic love making” as any particle of clothing on an individual). This series, it’s story, therefore necessary. If you’ve never seen Toxic Avenger IV, there’s a mute girl who tries to talk (although she is understandable), so a “translator bubble” pops up, with the same actress, top less, eating pizza (as hilarious as it is, it is truly unnecessary)

          • Kumiko Akimoto

If it’s unnecessary then it’s nudity for nudity sake and playing at your comedy strings. But senran kagura has clothing damage reasons, even the full clothing break is explained by that obviously.

        • Guest

Is Witcher 2 censored on consoles?

          • dragoon_slayer12

Never played it, so I don’t know

          • Shippoyasha

I played Witcher 2 on 360 and it wasn’t censored. The sex scenes in Witcher series are ridiculously tame anyway.

        • Shippoyasha

That is why they call the genre ‘ecchi’ which is all about the tease and not full on pornographic exposure. Most manga and anime material that has sexual fanservice tends to be in that realm. It’s not meant for full on titillation after all. The thing being that sexual entertainment is considered passable even for young teens as long as the content is playful and not fully pornographic.

    • Shippoyasha

I share your feeling of frustration with censoring nudity but unfortunately, even Japan is prudish about showing off of actual nudity nowadays. It’s not like in the 70s and 80s where you could see some full nudity even for anime catered to children.

I mean, even Senran Kagura’s censored fanservice has some people riled up already. It’s just a sad situation.

      • dragoon_slayer12

I could care less about being able to see them nude at all, but the in game censorship is what I find annoying. Ex; if this is just “promotional” censorship, whatever, full retail will show everything. But, in order to maintain a “suitable” rating, it’s not, which means this WILL be final product content. Showing nips isn’t an issue (God of war for example), nor is bare ass (heavy rain), sometimes full frontal gets a pass (GTA IV Dlc, can’t remember which one), but those are one time/rare occurrences, this game is pretty much the purpose. Burst had a respectable way of censorship (they cover themselves, they still have clothes on, etc), this literally has built in “black bars” covering full exposed and in plain sight full frontal. If your going as far to have someone spread eagle in the buff, just show it all or at least put some lingerie on.

        • Shippoyasha

I guess they are more intent on the comedic side than full on titillation with the series. Which is fine to me. But yeah, there will just be too many issues with ratings and any actual nudity will likely court controversy. I guess it’s an uphill argument in that they should allow for even more in games. That’s what I personally believe in but it is tough going to do that even with Japanese game creators.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

I don’t see why it’s a problem honestly I don’t mind a censor in something if it was placed there originally.

        • Shippoyasha

Yeah, the series is more about the tease than it being about real nudity anyway. I guess I went off tangent a bit there in how even Japanese entertainment has a limit to the violence and nudity and how game age ratings affect them too.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Yeah but look at anime they have homemade censoring all the time, hell when i first started watching anime i thought it was an on purpose to fit the theme of the show.
Had no idea they uncensored things in blurays. So i guess as long as it’s not showing full down below gentiles they’ll allow it on personal sell stuff.
It kinda would have been nice I admit if they had used another head like censor for the vag area but maybe that was just too risky. It would have added to the funny of the censor though.

  • KuroNathan

Uhh apparently your video got flagged and audio removed

  • Robert Backland

    Youtube is the terrible.

  • Pheria

This looks glorious. I’m sad that it’s digital, as I’d like to import without having to wipe my Vita to go between accounts.

  • Strip Cooking: Ninja-style! Nope, still don’t see a reason to censor this game at all. Nope!

  • Zak Ledward

Agreeing with some people and saying that this looks like a mini-game for Shinovi Versus. Even the victory pose for Homura is the same XD N-NOT THAT I’M COMPLAINING VITA IS GETTING ANOTHER SK GAME THOUGH! I will enjoy Rhythm + Boobs until the next Vita game gets here.

  • Wow this looks fun! The lack of audio is painful though lol

  • Kamakuma

So how did the audio get flagged exactly? x’D

Anyway back on topic this game looks pretty darn fun although I feel for the person playing it. He looked like he was having a tough time near the end. Which you can’t blame him the plot was getting to him… <>

  • Kumiko Akimoto

Hey hey original censorship means less chance of localization censorship

  • Aeonix G

Kinda makes it feel like Cooking Master Boy Anime..but with Bewbies @@

  • Prinny Dood

I kept “tit”i mean it on pause at 8:27:-)

  • Kumiko Akimoto i found similar gameplay if no ones scene this it has sound. It’s kinda weird that there’s isn’t any music just sounds but the gameplay is intersting
