Matsuno On How Unsung Story Will Differ From Final Fantasy Tactics

Unsung Story designer Yasumi Matsuno has shared a further details on the game in another brief Q&A session on the Unsung Story Kickstarter page. We’ve picked a few of the more interesting questions and answers out below, but you can view the full list of of them here.


Q: “Will the overall game play be an open-world feel with tactical battles or more like the ‘going between towns on a road’ feel like [Final Fantasy Tactics]?”

A: Though the world map will look like [Final Fantasy Tactics] and [Tactics Ogre’s], with various towns, strongholds, and the like, as the focus of this game will be participating in slices of history, the player will not move from town to town, but from time to time. At any given time, you will have a range of “scenarios” (i.e. battles) to choose from.


Q: “Will there be side quests available?”

A: Not at launch, but side quests will certainly be part of the expansion material we make available in the months following release.


Q: “[Final Fantasy Tactics] and [Final Fantasy Tactics A2] moved away from Charge/cast times, which I felt heavily took away from the depth of those games. Will Charge/Cast times be a core component of this game? One of my favorite mechanics in FFT was casting time.”

A: Sorry, there won’t be casting times in this game.In fact, the reason why FFT included a casting time system at all was to allow the game time to load graphic effects. This was a necessary consideration due to PlayStation loading times and memory concerns. Speaking as a developer back in those days, I can tell you that we weren’t happy with it.


Q: “The “World” system from PSP remake of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together is a fantastic mechanic that I hope can be incorporated in this project.”

A: While it won’t be exactly the same as the World system from TO:LUCT, there’s some similarity in how you will be able to travel freely through different points in the game story’s history.


Unsung Story has acquired close to $480,000 in Kickstarter contributions thus far, and is aiming to accumulate $600,000 over the next four days. If the funding goal is met, Unsung Story will be released for PC, Mac, Windows Tablets and Linux. If it isn’t met, the game will be released solely for iOS and Android devices.

    Looks like they’ll fall short of their goal, which is a shame. Still, I can’t help thinking they would’ve had more contributors if it were for a console as opposed to IOs/Droid.

      PC and Mac support is usually a good enough incentive though. And successful games can aim for console ports later as the money required to port them can be pretty daunting.

      Even now, there are doubts floating around about the credibility of these developers so that probably weighs on the potential backers.

        Yeah, PC or console doesn’t matter. I also don’t really mind Android but if I have the choice, I’d prefer a bigger screen and being able to use one of my PS controllers :)

        But I too was like “…okay yes I definitely want more games from this guy, but are there really NO WIP-screenshots, artworks and nothing of this? what the heck!”

      The whole “this is a phone game that might be released on pc” isn’t helping their case. They say it’d be more flushed out as a full game as a result, but people don’t look upon that really favorably.

    For a system they didn’t like, the magic casting time did do a pretty good job balancing the already very powerful magic classes. Even though in Tactics Ogre, the wait for spells was a tad too long and the game play balance was sort of off midway through.

    Maybe they will adopt an instant casting system like in Disgaea and some other more modern SRPGs.

      Well, FFT’s game balance was wonky at best either. Especially after you got a certain old knight with his auto-haste Excalibur and insta-cast AOE techniques…but the early game was like super-hard.

    600k seems pretty steep to port an mobile game to a few easy platforms it probably already works on for development purposes.

      Is that the reason why I haven’t seen any character art at all? I’ve stayed away from this game because I couldn’t tell what it was supposed to look like.

        You haven’t seen any character art at all because Yoshida wasn’t confirmed to be apart of the project till a couple weeks ago. He only left Squenix a short time ago, so I think bad timing has more to do with it than anything.

          That’s unfortunate that he didn’t have to the time to do art sooner. I honestly think that would’ve helped to boister more support. I’m sure there’s a ton of people like me who only saw background art and promptly said “Nope.” and moved on.

          I can’t get excited for an RPG that doesn’t show me its characters.

      Unprepared would be a better word. Yoshida wasn’t even attached to the project till very recently so not having art assets to show off seems realistic, if unfortunate.

      They’re committed to making the game without meeting their kickstarter goal apparently, so we’ll see what he does eventually. It might kinda suck if when art and music do come out for this project and a lot of people find themselves wishing they could play it and it’s only available on Android or iOS.

    I miss the Japanese art style. Too western in this game. If I want generic western artwork I’ll play every fantasy western RPG ever.

      The game actually has the same character designer as Final Fantasy Tactics/Bravely Default/Final Fantasy XIV ARR. He just hasn’t had any time to devote to the project for concept art yet.

    This will never get funded. I guess it’s good it’s gonna be released for IOS and Android anyway but they just really wasted their time with this Kickstarter. Why have those updates and Q&As? It’s completely useless. They’re asking people to fund a concept, not a game.

      The “concept” could actually get funded. Didn’t you read that Kickstarter is close to $480k? Only $120k left!

      Still, I agree with you over this. Even if I have a really good concept in mind, I would feel like I’m abusing the system since I would actually not be developing a game. People should listen to both their hearts and their brains and then judge if they should use Kickstarter.

        Thats a 1/4 of all the money they have made since the campaign started, and they need it in 4 days…

          Either way, the concepts have already been funded, but only for ios and android.

            Just saying that theres no chance of getting to $600k… and if i recall correctly the IOS and Android versions where gonna be made no matter what… and just a random thougt, what happens to the money of the people who supported this?

            Don’t you get refunds for games that don’t meet their initial goals?

          • You don’t pay ANY money unless the project’s funding goal is reached, they won’t charge you until AFTER the Kickstarter campaign is over.

    For anyone interested they’ve confirmed the game is being made for at least android/iOS regardless of the Kickstarter falling short. Sakimoto is also confirmed to be doing the soundtrack even though it’s obvious they are far short of the 1 million $ goal.

    Sidequests should be made available with initial purchase of game, too me if a rpg doesn’t have sidequests or something similar its not really a an rpg in my opinion.
