Meet Tales of Zestiria’s Third Character, Miclio

By Ishaan . February 12, 2014 . 9:00am

Jump magazine has revealed a new character in Tales of Zestiria, named Miclio. (Thanks, Re:Zaregoto) Miclio is main protagonist Slay’s closest friend and rival, and is described as a calm character, as opposed to Slay, who’s more excitable. His element is water.

Miclio is designed by Mutsumi Inomata and belongs to a “Heavenly Tribe,” who are supposed to be immortal beings. The Heavenly Tribe also have the ability to manipulate the sounds of heaven in some manner.

A pair of screenshots in Jump also seems to suggest that regular human beings cannot see Miclio. This would include Alicia, the other protagonist of Tales of Zestiria. However, Slay appears to live with the Heavenly Tribe, and can see Miclio just fine.

Tales of Zestiria is currently in development for the PlayStation 3.

  • SerendipityX

Wow I really like his design. The clothes look like something out of Graces.

    • Arcana Drill

yep he really resemble hubert design… just a less tsunderish.

      • gulabjamal

I love this, I literally said the exact same thing when I saw him on the article.
“And for our latest reveal, we have brought you Hubert without glasses.”

    • kaotron

…it remind me of hubert for some reason.

      • trigger91

Reminds me more of Mao from Tales of Rebirth

        • kaotron

I guess, his clothes and color scheme resembles mao but he look more like a bishonen hubert who died he hair with color contacts instead of glasses.

    • Sakurazaki

That’s Mutsumi Inomata design for you.

    • Tiredman

His look makes me think boring. That color scheme just screams go to sleep. Guess i just prefer more vibrant colors on characters that will likely be in a majority of a game.

  • colorblindnightmare

Nice. Liking the design direction this game is taking.

  • Nitraion

A male childhood friend with male MC?? that’s… fresh
His clothing design remind me of hubert’s
can wait to see another chara reveal

    • FFmax

All we need is a child character, an older person, and the traitor to make the predictable tales group.

      • I need my Femme Fatale as well.

        • Crimson_Cloud

Who gets more screen time if possible. ˇˇ

      • gulabjamal

        Dat Judith doe

      • Samsara09

        well,let’s see.

      • Blarg

I completely agree with you about the Tales group thing. However, who was the traitor in Abyss again? I ca never remember.

    • fireguardiancoty

And yet it’s nothing new. Phantasia, Eternia, Destiny 2, Symphonia, Vesperia, and Abyss had it as well.

      • How i want everyone to play xillia 2 already

        • fireguardiancoty

Can’t wait to shed those tears all over again.

          • No sht, first tales of game where i actually cry (teary eyed and even some tears going out, nothing dramatic of course haha), and not once, 2 times. This game breaks most of the normal tales of stuff, and it went perfectly.

          • gulabjamal

jeez it sounds amazing. And I was already satisfied with Tales of Xillia 1. I can’t imagine how they’d improve on that, especially when we’ve already seen the setting and majority of characters. I’d imagine the only one that has further growth is Ludger.

UGH I want it now just to be proved wrong.

          • You have no idea, all chars from xillia grew in that time, between xillia 1 and 2, here they grow more, they feel more complete and more human… It seriously made me feel xillia 1 was just q preparation, like the salt you add to a dish so it will taste better, and xillia 2 is the main dish.

If you enjoyed xillia 1. Mark my words. You will orgasm with xillia 2 xD

          • gulabjamal

Okay that is kickass news. Can’t wait for it now. Btw I love you bc your name is Wild Arms, and that was my favorite RPG series alongside Breath of Fire and FF growing up.

    • Slayven19

Genis was lloyds childhood friend. Also just in graces hubert was asbel’s childhood friend, he just happened to have a female childhood friend as well.

    • Blarg

Can’t tell if sarcastic so going to assume you aren’t. The male childhood friend isn’t really that new. Consider Lloyd and Genis from Symphonia were childhood friends. I believe Guy and Luke from Abyss had a somewhat childhood friends element. Not entirely sure about Yuri and Flynn, they might of just been military buddies.

  • “regular human beings cannot see Miclio” very very cool

    • God

A slightly original twist to an otherwise completely cliche character (The Bro).

      • William Cox

Yeah, the bio was starting to make me think of someone like Hubert a bit.

  • Spirit Macardi

    Wait… Purple eyes… Immortal… Extremely bishonen…!

Apparently not only did Lelouch accept C.C.’s code, he then traveled to another world, dyed his hair, and used his Geass to convince people they can’t see him!

    • Timovisch

Haha. I was actually thinking of Lelouch while clicking on this article. xD

  • Arcana Drill

Cool, and his profile makes me wonder if he will be a mage or mage knight…
“ability to manipulate the sounds of heaven” seems very magical to me.

    • On Gematsu it says that he uses a rod in battle, so you’re probably along the right lines.

      • Arcana Drill

        thanks for the info!

      • Samsara09

well, didn’t they say that Leia uses rods?

        • Leia? That’s Xillia this is Zestiria.

          Slay – Sword

          Alicia – Spear

          Miclio(?) – Rod(?)

          • Samsara09

Well, since you didn’t do the homerwork I had to.Seems Leia uses staves. But if I remember right “Staves” are usually mage weapons in rpgs and older tales of…but if you check leia she is more of a mage knight, although she doesn’t use sword nor offensive magic.

This guy is most likely something of the sort,he looks like the guy who doesn’t dirty this hands. But well, maybe he isn’t a mage.

I wasn’t expecting you to be a Sherlock,I was too subtle, but I was expecting to catch your attention with that observation,so that we could have this reflection.Since I had to do it on my own means it was useless. Thanks for being oblivious, and sorry for the misuderstanding.

          • I couldn’t care less if I didn’t meet your expectations to picking up on your “subtleties” or whatnots.

Where did I say he was definitely a “mage”? Nowhere. Just helping to confirm that Arcana is along the right lines.

  • The fact that Alicia can’t see him is pretty cool. I wonder how this will play into the plot. I like his character design too. He looks like he could be a Code Geass character lol

  • Hm, I actually feel something kind of different is being done with this character. Friend of the MC, but he’s not only immortal, but is invisible to most people–including other party members. This sort of setup has a lot of interesting possibilities–I hope it’s handled well.

  • Slickyslacker

He’s like Hubert and Lezard Valeth combined.

  • Masa

wow, a pretty unique sounding character for a tales game, liking the look of him.

  • DesmaX

Do like the idea of people being unable to see him.

But… His head is just… too round. It’s bothering me

  • Kornelious

Sweet! I really like his design, and can’t wait to see who’s next! But wait,,,if only Slay can see him, then how does that work in combat? Is he even playable?

  • Go2hell66

could they not come up with a better name for the protagonist :p

    • gulabjamal

Nope. Because he’s gonna be a dragon tamer at one point for the pun “Slays dragons.” Get it? Cuz they’re Slay’s dragons!! No? Okay fine I’ll leave

      • Vash bane

    • M’iau M’iaut

It’s a JRPG, its a Tales JRPG — names which make you want to facepalm are a required trope.

      • kaotron

I always like tales for the battle systems(and sometimes skits) while the stories were usually meh-ish.

just look at gracesf, the characters were very bad the story was pretty dull but the battle system was so good that it made the game worth playing anyway

    • Ladius

Keep in mind Slay’s name isn’t finalized and we don’t have an official western romanization yet.

  • Timovisch

    Puzzles please. xD

  • Yuuki

He makes me think of Legendia for some reason

  • kaotron

…So he’s an “immortal” who looks human and is best friends with the main?
This sounds a little bit like symphonia, all it needs now is “fantasy racism” like the half-elves.

    • I think that might be inherently included simply because no one can see them, lol.

      • kaotron

yeah, good point. it said that he’s also from a tribe too, so it’s not like he’s not a super imaginary friends either…I wonder how this will play out?

    • Blarg

To be fair, I wouldn’t mind the racism aspect coming back. Symphonia has the best story in my opinion and the racism aspect is probably what helped add a nice touch.

      • kaotron

yeah, the half elf thing was also in phantasia with arch, and tales of rebirth race war with the animal people.

Symphonia focus on half elf race because it’s mainly what caused mithos to go insane(dead sis) but with the whole invisible spirit thing it may be different with miclio…

        • Blarg

I was thinking they could play a racism aspect with the monk-type characters like Slay who can see the heavenly tribe people.

          • kaotron

yeah, I guess that makes way more sense..

  • Earthjolly

So the main character stole colettes clothes and this guy stole Huberts clothes. Awesome.

    Very intrguing indeed

    • Blarg

So I’m not the only one that thought Slay’s clothes looked like Colette’s!

  • Audie Bakerson

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…

It appears he shares Slay’s belt fetish!

Which is annoying, because if you replace 5 of the belts with… cloth strips (or just an undershirt) it could actually look pretty good.

    • bassgs435

maybe the belts have some meaning for the heavenly tribe?

  • kaotron

No one can see him? I wonder how the story and battles with him will play out.

At any rate I like him more than Slay and his obsession with feather accessories…

  • MaximDualBlade

I love his design. He seems tall.

    • Arcana Drill

      actually he have 1,65 meters.

      • MaximDualBlade

oooh… A shame. I prefer the and elegant look than the short and elegant look.

  • Zoozbuh

Sigh… I wish the Tales team would try at least ONE new type of radically different character design. Like a gay guy/girl or something. (Just an example). I don’t know, I’m just sick of them re-shuffling the same archetypes/styles/looks (Still planning on getting it though!)

    • kaotron

well slay looks like a combination of jude, collete and lloyd(who really likes feathers for some reason) while the girl(forgot her name) is kinda new but might play like judith. While this guy looks like he beat up hubert and stole his clothes.

At least the only thing being reused are the clothes from the older games. But if there’s another adult who’s only character traight is how old he is or some loli and a betrayer like zelos then I’m getting angry.

      • Zoozbuh

Lol yeah don’t get me wrong, as long as the characters are interesting and have more than one dimension to them, I’m sure people will enjoy the game regardless. It’s just annoying that after SO many games they still just stick to such familiar ground with character designs.

        • kaotron

yeah, i’d like if they made a game with a different race character(besides the same caucasian asian anime hybrid).

      • Ladius

This line of thought seems to assume jrpg tropes are a Tales exclusive (or issue, depending on one’s stance) instead of being staples for most of the genre, not to mention how they are common in other Japanese entertainment media.

Also, characters that share a common party archetype can be really different, just think about Kratos, Jade, Malik and Rowen, or Anise, Rita and Elise, or Richard and Alvin.

        • kaotron

I’m already aware of the commonly used jrpg cliches. I know that tales didnt invent them but they have a really bad habit for following the same tropes. I just like it when they try something a little new like Yuri from vepseria for example since he was very different from the typical lead.

I really liked jade and raven but what’s with their “Im such an old man” routine when they are only 35. I know that it’s a jrpg with a teenage cast but do the only adults there have to act like an 80 year old?

btw, I was never big on the tales story line, I’m more of a fan on their battle system, If tales was a turn based rpg I wouldnt even look at it.

          • Ladius

I agree about those characters’ “old man” comments, even if I felt they were mostly running jokes or references to the young age of the rest of the party. I imagine even in the real world an adult in his late 30s or 40s would probably feel older than he is (or even out of place) if he traveled and interacted with teen agers for a long time.

Back to the topic, my point is that following a trope doesn’t actually mean anything regarding a character’s quality, especially considering how practically everything has been done before in some other book, game, comic, anime, movie and so on. Context and execution are key in this regard, and compared to other jrpg series I think Tales has always done a good job at providing characterization through skits and sub events and outlining the relationship inside their playable casts.

For instanance, while Yuri was based on a trope that is unusual in the context of the Tales series, he was still recognizable tropey. I would even say that the way Vesperia abandoned its justice theme in the third part of the game ended up giving him less growth and depth compared to some other Tales main characters. People may still love him regardless simply because he’s a badass, but that is more a matter of taste than characterization.

          • kaotron

I think the reason why most people liked yuri is because he wasnt the typical angsty teenage main. Yes, he did have his tropes but at least he was different to the other tales leads.

There wasnt much character growth for him because the game started off with him already being experienced and wise and unlike lloyd, asbel, and luke for example he wasn’t completely clueless, bent on “i must protect my friends”, or go through any life changing epiphanies. I also I liked that he was easy going and not stupid serious.

but in the end you’re right. I guess some people prefer a more flawed character like luke and like to see them grow a better character while some like the already good ones..

          • Ladius

I agree with you on Yuri being more experienced and disillusioned since the start of the journey compared to other Tales heroes, but I also think they could have done a lot more with his rivalry with Flynn and with his belief in dealing justice regardless of law and outside the boundaries of society.

If handled in a different way, that could have allowed him to grow even more by forcing him to face his responsibilities and explore the consequences of his actions, but in the end he had no real reason to do that, considering no one seriously tried to change his ways, the ones he killed were one-sided villains that had absolutely no redeeming traits and whose deaths had no negative impact whatsoever and the whole justice theme was kinda abandoned in the last part of the game, when the menace shifted from human antagonists to a more supernatural focus.

Considering how the PS3 version apparently had Flynn not only joining the party but also help Yuri even more during the story, I imagine this whole theme could have an even lesser impact compared to the original release. Don’t misunderstand me, though: I had a great time with Vesperia and I love the game.

          • kaotron

yeah, yuri actually eliminated some of his enemies permanently without going the “omg I took someone’s life, im a monster” route because like you said his enemies were one-note and cartoonishly evil. Even in the movie Yuri and Flynn killed the guy in the end instead of “sending him to prison”.

I also agree, flynn couldve been a bigger and more relevant character to the story line with more interactions to the cast but he was kinda one-note too while being too self-rightous at times…

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

or a non white guy/girl. heh.

      • Ladius

It already happened with Meredy, Chat, Loni and Forest.

    • Ladius

To be honest, I fail to see how a character’s homosexuality would immediately reflect on her or his character design or clothing, going that way has an high risk of creating some sort of parody (or even being offensive, depending how far it’s taken) rather than a character that happens to be gay or lesbian as part of their background.

That said, I don’t really see the point in criticizing this character considering his premises are actually fairly unique, I think there’s a lot of preconceptions about Tales tropes that make people immediately question designs that would be considered perfectly fine in other contexts.

      • Zoozbuh

You’re partly right, but ‘gay person’ was only an example so not like I meant that specifically.

I admit this character is a bit more unique, but I mainly had the two main characters (first ones mentioned) in mind when posting my comment.

It much also be VERY hard not to tread the same group when creating large character ensembles like this, so that’s a factor I understand as well.

        • Ladius

That’s fine, I was just a bit confused at the idea of linking a character’s homosexuality to herhis outward appearance.

I think your last paragraph hits the nail on the head: even if they are having four character designers work on this game, it’s extremely difficult to have totally new, unrecognizable charactersclothes in a series that has fourteen main entries and lots of spin-offs, each one with large casts that cover multiple archetypes. I imagine they don’t want to make something totally unrecognizable, too, considering how much Baba talks about the importance of mantaining a cohesive identity for the series as a whole regardless of each game’s unique traits.

That said, I personally think Slay and Alicia’s designs are good considering what Namco is trying to do with Zestiria. I think Slay is a throwback to a more traditional fantasy art style, and even if he has some of Fujishima’s more recognizable traits I think he’s more sober and beliavable compared to other Tales leads he designed in the past. Alicia is another good design in my book, especially considered the series never had an armored warrior princess-type character, despite having some princesses in the past. I’m curious to see if the rest of the cast will keep adhering so strongly to this theme (aside from Miclio, which has a different role in the setting).

    • gulabjamal

      But there’s already been a gay character:|1

    • Firekitty

      >_> Think of a better example. Sexual preference has absolutely nothing to do with character design or personality.

Also, how do you know this character isn’t gay? He’s apparently a childhood friend of the protagonist, so that automatically gives him priority as a love interest!

    • M’iau M’iaut

Honestly, the series has often had bishies. Leon, Karyl and even Stahn from Destiny — pretty much any boy not named Lloyd in Symphonia (and he screams shonen) — every boy in Graces.

      It is what it is.

  • Digging the design. Sounds like he’s not playable unfortunately.

    • Hmm read somewhere else that he is, so nevermind.

      • kaotron

yeah, I’m guessing that he’s just another unplayable Ion, but the whole rival since childhood make me think he may be playable, but dont know how it’ll work out with the whole invisible thing.

        • Ladius

He appears to be playable, he should be using some sort of battle staffrod.

          • kaotron

yeah, I think he’s more likely to be the black mage type of character.

  • CirnoLakes

    He’s beautiful! I like him.

  • gulabjamal

This invisibility thing won’t last. I’m guessing that if he ventures out of Heavenly Tribe territory for too long he becomes visible. And that will be his sacrifice as he chooses to journey with Slay and be looked down upon by his tribe.
Some way or another the invisibility is going to go, that’s for sure.
    Theories anyone??

    • Ladius

That’s more than likely, even if having him as an unseen being could make for some really entertaining skits.

  • Uwaa I can’t wait to play this game. I know it may be awhile but I’m still super excited. I really love his design. The 2D art reminds me of Leon a bit.

  • Why isn’t he the hero ?!

    • kaotron

because he doesnt have a sword…

      • fireguardiancoty

Senel and Jude would like to have a word with you.

        • kaotron

senel’s the only exception in the series, jude was kind of a duo with millia(who had a sword) so doesnt count.

  • ndjn3979

    What an awkward name.

  • Lloyd Christmas

That face for some reason reminds me of Kurapika.

  • What immediately came to my mind upon reading his name:

“Miclio – The perfect start to your mornings
    (Zest flavor also available.)”

    • Good to the last drop?

      (I couldn’t resist… *hides*)

      • Oi, don’t give doujin artists ideas before the game is even out.

  • Randgriz

I hope this comes to the west.. HAHA just kidding!

    • Jesse

They already said we’re getting it. =o

    • Ladius

Namco already announced it :P If you missed on the other news, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles is coming west at the end of February and Xillia 2 will hit the US and Europe in the upcoming months.

  • DawnWolf

My thoughts when I saw this guy: If Hubert and Leon had a love child, it would look an awful lot like this.

  • Ladius

I really like what they’re doing with Zestiria’s cast, this is one of the best Inomata designs and I think Fujishima and Okumura’s characters have been very solid, too.

The character’s premise is also fairly unique and could lead to lots of interesting (and funny) events, even if I imagine his invisibility will end up being dispelled in order to give him a way to properly interact with the rest of the party.

  • Darkrise

I’m excited for this but can’t help but want the cel shaded look Vesperia had.

    • Anime10121

Too bad Baba doesnt seem to want to return to that style, as he said in didnt allow for much flexibility in character animations :(

I also much greatly prefer it to this art style :(

  • Ciel

why can’t he be the protagonist :/

    • AkuLord3

Because then a COOLER character would replace him DUH, that’s the rule. There’s always a cooler character next to the main character

  • Red Veron

    • beepboopity

Magical white haired bishounen = instant fujoshi bait!

      • Firekitty

It’s a Tales game. We don’t need much encouragement.

  • Warboss Aohd

    he looks like a Sociopath.

he will likely be one of the better characters.

  • beepboopity

    He’s so pretty.
    Why is he so pretty?

    • Samsara09

because he is a heavenly being.

  • Jesse Torres

The cool one’s are always the most powerful.

  • water element? TAIDARUUU WEEIIBUUU

  • Adam Zaorski

Those girly looks in some jrpgs are begining to get really annyoying.

Don’t get me wrong I’m hyped on Zestiria, but damn, please make some characters that don’t make you laugh each time they try to be tough with those feminine looks.

    • Saifer Emmerich

      All too true.

  • Saifer Emmerich

Another Tales game to hide in my bunker in preparation for VG Armageddon…

  • Oh, I like his design. You could say the side looks belt-wild, but it’s a nice touch rather than overkill. Leave to Inomata-sensei! ♥

  • PenguinChan1119

I’m excited for this but I would be more excited for a Xillia 2 release date.

  • skyenix

Mature Jude Mathis in white hair! I like his name.

  • Yan Zhao

The “Leon Magnus” of the game. At least thats the vibe he gives me looks wise.

  • Bell

Wow, what an original character! I’ve never seen anyone like him in any other Tales game before! My initial shock and anger aside, perhaps Miclio will be a better character than this brief description make shim out to be. A few words isn’t enough to get me riled up, although it was pretty close. After all, to be quite honest, I’m rather annoyed at the lack of party member originality in Tales games. Even the more interesting characters in the games still fulfill some kind of niche, like the bright eyed, bushy tailed protagonist or the friend who’s really working for the enemy.

  • kaimo

looks like they’re still using that awful normal mapping render. Shame.
