Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed Coming To North America This Summer

By Ishaan . March 5, 2014 . 9:11am

Xseed are bringing Akiba’s Trip 2 to North America, under the title Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed. The game will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Vita this Summer.

In the game, you’re trying to repel a “brooding malevolence” that has infested Tokyo’s popular electronics district, Akihabara. The district has been invaded by “Synthisters,” creatures who prey on Akiba’s otaku like vampires, feasting on their will to live and energy to socialize. (There’s a joke here, but I’m not making it.)

Like regular vampires, though, the Synthisters are weak against sunlight, so you’ll need to identify which of the normal-looking humans are Synthisters with the help of an in-game smartphone app, and… strip them of their clothing to expose them to the sun. Once you’ve taken their clothes, you can use them for yourself.

Here’s a story summary for the game from Xseed:

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed tells the story of a young man named Nanashi who was lured into a trap and transformed into one of the walking undead. Lucky enough to be spared the worst of his fate by the kiss of a mysterious Synthister hunter named Shizuku, Nanashi is sworn to rid Akihabara of the Synthister threat. Together with the rest of his companions in an organization unofficially dubbed the “Akiba Freedom Fighters,” Nanashi and Shizuku must uncover the truth behind the Synthister plague and save Akiba from being overrun by their kind.

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Vita this Summer.

  • Takane Shijou

Can’t wait to pick this up later on this year. Hoping we’ll get to see a physical release for this as well.

Just hoping to see that SV announcement as well at some point. But this is definitely great to see.

  • Flandre Scarlet

This is nice news. Still holding on hope for Shinovi Versus, as well.

  • idrawrobots

I am ALL over this! I wonder how they will handle all the branding in the game.

  • DesmaX

Well, at least they didn’t call it “Akiba’s Trip 2” in the west

    • Slickyslacker

I wonder if they ever plan upon releasing the first game…

  • TheExile285

    YES! WOOT! :D

  • Slickyslacker

I was sort of dreading the announcement being Shinovi Versus. Yeah, massive gazongas, but the Senran games are hardly enjoyable brawlers. This is something I’m sure I’ll be picking up.

    • idrawrobots

I hear nothing but Shinovi being much better that Burst, and I like Burst.

      • Slickyslacker

It may be better than Burst, but it’s still merely a fighting game.

…and I don’t know about you, but staring at the characters continuously gets “tiring” for me.

        • Pyrofrost

Personally, Burst > Shinovi (as I have played both)

Thats why I am more concerned about XSeed announcing SK2, than I am Shinovi.

        • hng qtr

“but it’s still merely a fighting game.”
          It’s a Musou/beat’em up.
A fighting game spinoff would be nice though.

          • Pyrofrost

It hardly has the Musou element. If anything, it’s Ikki Tousen, not Musou.

  • Alex Sargeant

Not sure on that subtitle though.

  • chroma816

Woo! Not sure if I want it for Vita or PS3 yet, but it’ll probably be Vita.

Now let’s just hope we also get Shinovi Versus

  • Jesse

That’s a rather silly subtitle, like with Dangan Ronpa. Oh well, I didn’t plan on buying this thing because of that stripping nonsense, anyway.

  • Roberto

The time has come, and so have I

  • AndyFe

Wow that is really awesome! I can’t wait to play this in English, I too don’t know what version I’ll be getting though.

  • Chris Yuen

XSEED’s out to strip my wallet.

    • Crimson_Cloud

No kidding, this year is gonna be crazy expensive.

    • Altin

You could say that XSEED is going on a…
      *puts on sunglasses*
      Wallet’s Trip.

  • DemonShadowX

Probably be getting this for Vita…. Now can we get dumb commercials like they did for Senran Kagura Full Burst?

  • Kroz

I was so certain that this was gonna be Shinovi Versus, judging by the hint on twitter. Awesome that we’re still getting akibas trip but still bummed about no SV.

    • DyLaN

      SV should be after this.

    • GH56734

      The initials gave it out.

  • Pyrofrost

    Day fucking one!
Man, my wallet is getting it’s ass beat this year xD

  • KoRLumen

  • Sigfried Silverblade

My Vita is getting so many ecchi games this semester…

  • Red Antares

Darn… and I imported my copy… T_T I knew I should have waited, haven’t played it though but I wonder if they will censor anything in the game.

  • Raze

I wonder… Will they change the trailers that showed up in the big screen too?

I mean change it to their own game trailer…

    • DyLaN

Yeah, I wonder will we see the english trailer for D4R/Conception II/etc on it.

      • Raze

They can put another teaser there like Shinovi versus trailer or Tits SC trailer or any other their still to be announced game…

  • Leon_Tekashi

Hmm…It’s not Shinovi Versus, but I heard this game is also fun. I’m still going to get it. =)

    • Kenny Loh

Don’t worry, i think Shinovi Versus seems to be in next announcement.

      • Leon_Tekashi

Yeah I know. Like Burst, they’re going to announce it sometime in the summer, and then it will come out in the fall. That’s what I’m thinking at this point.

  • Nee Nee

This game is… coming overseas? IMPOSSIBRu BEST NEWS OF THE MONTH

  • DyLaN

    Called it but still, YEEESSSSSS!

I think I prefer the title to be just Akiba’s Trip 2 though. Plain and simple but eh, I understand the issue.

  • Zer0faith

    Well done XSeed.

  • Atwa

    Please Shinovi Versus too?

  • Takane Shijou

“Before folks ask, AKIBA’S TRIP: U&U will also be physical on both PS3 and Vita and will have Japanese audio. We’re looking into dual audio.”

[email protected] aka Brittany from XSEEDGames.

    • Leon_Tekashi

I hope things goes well for them.

    • DesmaX

Japanese audio? That’s a new for them

      • Raze

        Not really

        Remember Corpse Party?

        • DesmaX

… Oh, never played that one.

It’s just not that common to see that from them

    • Takane Shijou

“Since this is also being asked: we don’t plan to take anything out of the NA version. Licensed products in the JPN version will be in ours!”

      • ZnTxn

I was worried about this, considering the amounts of merchandise/ads and stuff in the game. This is great.

      • Pyrofrost

        And thank you!

I really appreciate the work you guys do for is!

      • GH56734

        That sets a nice precedent.
Always hoped Namco would give the Code Geass/Gintama/Keroro costumes (I don’t care about that Miku thing) in Tales / GE games.

        • Audie Bakerson

DIdn’t Namco not even give the costumes of stuff owned by Namco ([email protected])?

          • kyrt

no they actually did release the idolmaster dlc costumes for xillia.

          • Audie Bakerson

OK then. Remember hearing some people say they didn’t (maybe that was before they released them or something).

        • British_Otaku

Some of the Tales of games have anime/manga licensed costumes? If any of them are on a region free system (or Japanese 3DS), I’ll import. >_>

          • Like every single one has had dlc of anime characters. Tales of Xillia 2 has Code Geass costumes and Madoka costumes, Tales of Xillia had Star Driver costumes, Tales of Graces had Code Geass costumes and even Hatsune Miku costumes, Tales of Vesperia had Namco game costumes like Kos-Mos from Xenosaga and Mitsurugi from Soul Calibur. Pretty sure at least every single Tales game with dlc had one or two anime dlc costumes and/or cameos from other videogames. You can import all the ps3 ones. No region lock. Tales of Graces, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Xillia 2 all have anime costumes.

      • Crimson_Cloud

Finally they understand what the fans want and did it beforehand. Thanks for the info.

        • I want to jump in and add that it’s not always a company not wanting to fulfill what the fans want, but what the company is able to get, contractually.

          • Pyrofrost

Thank you, it’s a shame people have to constantly be reminded of this, but such is life.

          • Crimson_Cloud

And sometimes they can but they say they couldn’t, because they know that, depending on the game, fans will get it, butchered or not. There is a little bit of everything in gaming world. Politics. If you pry too much you’ll find mud everywhere. Sometimes it’s best to just look at the surface.

          • A little bit of politics, and a lot of assumptions from people who don’t follow the business end of things. I had my eyes opened quite a bit when I started working close with a couple of companies for my site. I’m surprised at the things that contracts can bind on.

Dual audio is a good example. There are Japanese contracts that can (and will) lock out licensing of the audio of their voice actors outside of Japan. It’s okay, because we have our own weird as hell issues thanks to voice actor unions and stuff here, too.

It’s just that contracts are a difficult mess of red tape for one, and things can get really really expensive. I almost want to say that it sounds like XSEED lucked out. A good example of why I’m surprised on the licensing part is from when Bandai said they couldn’t afford to release the Super Robot Wars in English. This was because Bandai wouldn’t be able to afford all of the licensing of the individual companies that made each of the series involved. I imagine some are probably easy to get, but others like Evangelion (as reference: Eva’s license nearly killed ADV back in the day- to my knowledge, they struggled with the result of it for years after, too) would probably be way beyond “normal” budgets.

I think by saying that it’s ALL politics is short-sighted and a sign of not knowing what goes on under the surface of localization efforts. Just looking at the surface tends to lead to assumptions which leads to seeing the worst in a company that’s tried its best.

There are many examples of this happening, both with journalists and fans themselves. The important thing to take away from this is that not all companies are out there to screw the fans over. In fact, many companies have fans themselves working for them- and sometimes they try to get what they can to go through how they can, but they have their hands tied in a terrible way. There’s also the fact that the company may not be able to afford it in the first place. I can’t say for absolute sure, but if a source of mine from years ago was correct, some game licenses alone can even cost in the half a million range, price-wise. From really small companies, no less.

          • idrawrobots

I have to wonder, it’s 2014 can we not come up with better contracts that make foreign translations of products easier?! We are so connected in this age, this kind of stuff is such a burden.

          • Crimson_Cloud

Maybe have those gadgets like, you hear them in one language and it immediately translates them into your own? That would make life harder cuz’ then it would mean that I could go back all the wayyy to nontranslated Japanese PC Engine games and play them and it would keep me for a lifetime XD

          • As great as it would be, contracts and globalization don’t always go hand in hand. When a contract is made, all aspects of revenue must be considered.

It’s like when creating technology, you have to pay out to the developers of individual parts of whatever it is your making.

While not related, I can use another example of contract shenanigans: if a company makes a contract with Microsoft for all the software used in the company (this is common with large companies to cut down on costs), it can be against contract to speak of other software products from other companies. A support tech that works with the software vendor the contract is held with can’t make references to Acrobat for pdfs without clearance for example.

In some cases, all of the references made might incur contractual shenanigans for each one. Thankfully, Marvelous AQL may have thought ahead (Disclaimer: I don’t know for sure. This is conjecture. ) and put appropriate clauses in the contract to allow them to carry that sort of thing over. If a company thinks ahead it works out for us, but not all Japanese companies develop with any sort of globalization in mind. That’s a whole new scary ballgame in of itself.

          • Crimson_Cloud

I’m not sure what you are trying to say here… I’m short-sighted?

Politics plays a major role in everything. If the company won’t make money out of something they won’t do it. Simple as that. Of course, there are those companies who focus on niche genre, who are closely tied to the fans and in that way they tend to survive. Smaller companies, they will break an extra effort and please their fans and in that way they will go on. The bigger companies will give less a fuck of what you and me want, because there are tons of them out there that will buy their game and few thousands not getting a game will not be fatal to them.

I’m grateful for Xseed and NISA that bring out the niche genre to us, but most of all I’m grateful for the fact that there are people like me, here, who play these games and thanks to those people that they give us these things.

And that is why I said not to think about it too much and just go along the surface. People are saying thanks to the company, I know. I am too. I go to forums and say thanks but in reality, we are all in the equal ground. We will get our game and they will get their money. I found that option less happy in this cruel world so I’m gonna ignore it and just go thinking they are REALLY doing it all for us. Savvy?

A lot of people know Super Robot Wars can’t be localized because it is impossible to get all the rights of all the anime and games that characters are from. It would take a fortune to localize it and it truth it wouldn’t sell that much. IT has a cult fallowing, I’m a huge fan, but let’s face it, it wouldn’t sell well in the west. Not Assassin’s Creed or Metal Gear Solid level. Now OG could have been done, on various occasions. But that’s another story which I won’t bother going into…

          • What you’re describing isn’t exactly politics. It’s more just ‘business.’ It’s the way businesses should operate. The problems with some of the bigger companies is that some CAN do international work, and some just aren’t structured properly to do it. Nintendo’s a good example of the badly needing a complete restructuring for global markets.

There’s a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes. When you take things at “face value” it creates the mistaken assumptions for things that are similar to the hate XSEED gets over the Grand Knights History fiasco. When you take the time to learn a bit more about the contractual portions and how the business works, you can see more details with the sort of things that are going on behind the scenes.

The original comment you made before doesn’t exactly sound like looking at it from the surface. It looks like unnecessarily pinning blame on some companies that may not be able to help the situations that they’re in.

(EDIT: Sorry this took so long. The earlier reply above was on my phone and it turned into a huge hassle, so I had to wait until I was back on my computer again.)

          • Crimson_Cloud

Ice cream restaurant, that has certain flavors that I want, opens near my house. I say ” Finally the damn shop opens!” – means that I’m angry of the situation that there weren’t any shops before and glad that there is one now. Not directly talking to the particular restaurant that arrived. And then you show up and start talking how my action is not justified to the poor restaurant cuz’ they couldn’t open before as they didn’t had any money. See the picture?

So I wasn’t insulting nor particularly talking about Xseed, which you think I am. If by any chance I gave that vibe, it’s cuz’ of my poor sentence structure. And I think you’re going into it far more then I want. Sorry.

        • Elliott Moon

i wonder if this will get a release in europe umm suppose i can always import it from america if not

      • FX102A

Have I ever told you guys and gals at XSEED how much I love you all?

      • WhyWai

THis is freaking awesome!! take my money now!

      • Jelly

Glad that it’s not atlus who take up this game =)

      • Fastchrone

this is should be in their FAQ

      • Danny Hazanif

Yes!! Finally! Luckily I didn’t buy the JPN Ver yet!~ :D

    • Pyrofrost

      Thank you!

    • MyBodyIsReady

Love me a good physical copy. Plus it means I can import since theres no word on a European release

    • Engi3Piece

thank you for physical! I know I might be in the minority on this, but I really hope we can get that English audio in.

      • James Hewitson

no just no. A game set in Akibahara the heart of Otaku culture and you want English dubbing? ugh.

        • Engi3Piece

ah I see you one of those person. Look I don’t care if it’s set in the heart of Otaku culture. Very Japanese, Otaku pandering games/anime got dub in the pass I don’t see why not this game. Persona 3/4, Dangaronpa, The World Ends With You, all of those have very good English VA in a setting that is very japan and still came out very good in English. People like you give fans a very bad name and people who put down others for wanting dub is not cool at all. I’m sure XSEED can pull it off, look at how great the Rune Factory 4 dub is.

    • Junko Enoshima

      You had me at dual-audio.

    • Rol

That’s all we can ask for. I would like to make an informed decision before I buy the game. Hopefully, questions about dual audio can be answered by the time the game can be pre-ordered.

    • Sorun

Fucking based XSEED. That’s all I ask for localizations, a physical copy. Day one buy.

    • katamari damacy

My god this was the very epitome of “game that would never ever see a western release due to ‘cultural differences'”
This has to be a day 1 purchase for me, even though I barely have time to play games anymore.

    • Chris Yuen

wait, just realized. Was that my post you quoted from GAF? Ahahaha.~MSMrRound

  • Pyrofrost

Here is some gameplay if the readers would like to have a look:

    • Nitraion

The battle system remind me of yakuza series but the enemies is tough than they looks… XD
      that’s really a long battle

      • s07195

Depends. Improving your weapons and clothes to a certain point will make the difficulty a joke. At least on Casual/ Gamer (Normal/Hard). On Otaku mode, god help you.

To make it a point, I have my head/clothes/pants at around 500 armor rating, and my weapon at around 600. I can easily get enemies’ clothes to being able to strip them in around 4 hits on Gamer mode. XD

    • Loli Summoner

Reminds me of Way Of The Samurai :P

  • FX102A

Physical copies, Japanese audio, PS3 & Vita copies confirmed for purchase!

This is why you are one of my favourite publishers XSEED. Hope for a nice Special Edition too.

  • hng qtr

“feasting on their will to live and energy to socialize.”
Poor vampires, they must be starving…

    • DyLaN

In the first game (or at least the manga adaptation), the reason given is that once most of the youths lost the will to live then there will be no future for Japan. The magaimono will then take over Japan easily.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Nice. I’ll probably get it to show my support, if anything else.

  • Learii

    let me guess PSN only

    • Lavitz
      • Learii

        lol ok that explain it

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

      You fail at guessing~.

      • Learii

I hope so lol because some games like this only for PSN

        • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

And what if they were? There’s nothing wrong with it, they are niche games that won’t sell a lot. A physical release is just a caprice from consumers. One that this time XSEED decided to indulge, they didn’t have to~.

  • Yan Zhao

lol I was not expecting this game to ever make it over. Now the question is, Vita or PS3, HMMM!!!

  • vault2049

Wow, I just imported this 3 months ago. Never, NEVER expected this game to come to NA. I will show my support and buy the PS3 version, since I already have the Vita version.

  • Nitraion

    LOL nice modification title….

  • shuyai

wow alot of of niche japanese game are getting localize lately. hope this trend continue

but both akiba and conception is the second game, i wonder do you need to play the first game

    • vault2049

Not really. I played the Japanese Vita version and it feels like a whole new game. Never felt like I was missing anything by not playing the prequel. As for Conception, I haven’t got the slightest idea.

      • s07195

The world view is different too, since the status of certain characters from the first game would mean that a direct sequel wouldn’t be too possible.

    • Adrián Alucard

Conception it’s like most Final Fantasy games, they are not plot connected

  • d19xx

    Based XSEED

    • ChiffonCake

Took the words right out of my mouth.

  • Monterossa

Do I need to play the first game?

    • doubleO7

      No. They’re not directly related.

      • s07195

I’m actually kinda disappointed about this. The only reference to the previous game is a former agent? BLASPHEMY.
        Though I can understand… T_T

  • Engi3Piece

I’m normally not into this type of game, but if it gets English audio (not too fond of JP Audio) then I definitely consider getting it

  • Oh hell yeah! This year has been amazing for announcements. Thank you XSEED. =^_^=

  • DivinePhoenix69

Niiiice! Though while i’m still hoping for an english dub, glad to see that it will include Japanese voices and (hopefully) dual audio so that everyone is satisfied regardless of your preference in audio. I’ll definately be getting this for the Vita.

  • chibiwall

    Another great news

  • artemisthemp

Now we just need a EU publisher that won’t censor this game.

  • otakumike

Good guy Xseed. This will be a day one purchase for me. Keep bringing games over!

  • Shane Guidaboni

Hasn’t the game been out in Japan for a while? A gameplay vid would have been cool. I’ll go look that up now…

  • Umar

yet again Xseed steals the show . I love you Xseed!!!

  • Skeptika Crediblus

I’ll buy it. Thank you XSEED, you sexy beast.

  • Kornelious

Awesome! And we’re getting a physical release as well! Now hopefully we will get some English dub and a neat special edition, no big deal if not though :)
I wonder if they are going to announce Shinovi Versus as well….Hey! get back here wallet! lol :D

  • Michael Connell

2014: Great year for JRPGs, terrible year for wallets, lol

    • I know that feeling…this is my vita’s gonna get later list for this year =_=

      Danganronpa 1 & 2
      Conception II,
      Demon Gaze
      Disgaea 4
      Blazblue CP
      Deception IV
      akiba’s trip

  • Good stuff.

  • DarkLight

Now how am I going to get this past my parents…….?

    • ??? Cover Art looks SFW.

      • DarkLight

Well, the name does suggest things and my parents will ask my brother to look into the game(as long as it is rated M,which it is)and well you see how it goes from there….

    • Kaetsu

I plan on downloading it digitally.

  • YES getting this on Vita

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Best surprise of the year so far~.

  • Earthjolly

    So this game any good?

    • s07195

Surprisingly addicting. The amount of weapon/ clothing choice is staggering. Story? Eh, it’s alright.

Compared to Akiba’s Trip Plus, it’s improved.

  • ThatGuy3190_7

““Synthisters,” creatures who prey on Akiba’s otaku like vampires, feasting on their will to live and energy to socialize. (There’s a joke here, but I’m not making it.)”

Sorry, but I’m not seeing the joke. And before anybody asks or flame, I’m not familiar with this series aside from the title.

    • darke

Being an otaku tends to be associated with being with hikikomori/NEET. Neither of those are associated with having much “energy to socialise”; thus the joke.

  • Radprofile

That story, so deep, WAY better than The Last of Us.

  • Eric Harris

Eh, was hoping for Shinovi Versus. Granted I only watched short gameplay vids of each but prefered it based on short looks.

  • kroufonz

make sure it has jp voice please xseed , i’d buy both retail version if it does have.

  • kg1

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

    Getting for Vitah

  • Cursingcomet

    Omg! Arigatou gozaimashita Xseed sama!

  • Gigan22

Woohoo! I’m still hoping for Senran Kagura, but my Vita shall have this. Thank you Xseed.

  • I am so excited to see this getting a release over here. The game has intrigued me and I’ve followed its Japanese release quite closely. To be getting it in NA this summer is almost too good to be true.

  • psycho_bandaid

“The district has been invaded by “Synthisters,” creatures who prey on Akiba’s otaku like vampires, feasting on their will to live and energy to socialize. (There’s a joke here, but I’m not making it.)”

  • Firion Hope

Whoa can’t believe this is getting a localization o_o I wouldve preferred Shinovi VS but this is awesome too!

    • Anesia Hunter

i wouldn’t give up on shinovi vs just yet since xseed did tease it before. however, i think they’re just trying to figure out whether a physical release will be safe to do or not.

      • Firion Hope

I really hope they do, and we get some Senran Kagura UK esque box art <3

  • $51888021

  • LazuliteLiamz

I’ve played a ton out of the JP ver. but I’ll still be getting the localized ver. just because of how awesome it is xD

    • s07195

I’m still stuck playing this for the 4th playthrough right now. :P

  • Daru Titor

    I might get this…..
    Still undecided

  • Kami nii

Time to get my stripping moves to gear and be ready this summer!! :P

This is not a digital only release right???

  • Dolkey

Now the question for me is, to buy the PS3 version for a higher quality game, or to by the PS Vita version to play on the go

    • ワン スャレ

I recommend Vita, since the graphics and cutscenes aren’t that impressive and the story is divided into small missions (and submissions) which is great for quick gaming sessions of 5-10 minutes each.
As for me, I might get the Ps3 version. I already got the Jp version and this time around I want to fully understand what’s going on. Looking at faqs for the side missions can be tough sometimes.

      • Nitraion

Did Vita version have gimmicky touch feature.?
i doesn’t matter what version i get since I have Vita TV XD

        • ワン スャレ

Most of the control is through buttons. Even the menu navigation is entirely with buttons, there is no touch option. The only time touch is utilized is when performing Unison Strip (the special attack) by tapping partner portrait on the top left corner of the screen and when saving (but that’s psv function, not the game). I guess it’s doesn’t matter which version you want to buy.

For me I just want to watch fabulous stripping action on big screen this time around.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

  • Michael Richardson

Wow, between Senran Kagura, Monster Monpiece, and now this, I think it is safe to call this the Year of Ecchi!

But really, the Vita is really seeing a surge of awesome games this year. Hopefully stronger sales will follow.

Aksys Games set to release “Mind 0”

  • nihongogamer

WOW! I totally did not think this game would be localised when I reviewed it on NihongoGamer last year. Good news though, it’s a fun game!

  • nihongogamer

Oh and as a bonus the JP version worked on PS Vita TV so if it’s the same for NA you could save yourself some cash rather than buying it twice for TV play :)

  • tturtlejosh

I better get a summer job for all these vita games *___*

  • Zalin

Enough said! Where do I put in my pre-order already!!!????

  • Zalin

LOL! Just noticed in the video that it says this game is anticipated to be rated mature! I don’t think I have ever seen that before and only makes me want to buy it more!
