This morning, Nippon Ichi Software shared the first trailer for The Guided Fate: Cross Thesis Awakening, their upcoming PlayStation 3 RPG slated for release this July in Japan. The trailer—which played during Famitsu Live stream earlier in the day—can be viewed below. (Thanks, Game Kana)

Aside from the trailer, NIS also showed off over 20 minutes of in-game footage during the stream, giving one a good look at the game’s visuals. You can watch that below.

The Guided Fate: Cross Thesis Awakening will be available in Japan on July 24th. You can read more about the game here.

Grabs popcorn and a soda… this will be fun.

It looks like Sorcery Saga! <3

  • DesmaX

    And here’s 2 in-game images:

Looks quite good, honestly (At least compared to how ugly GFP was). I’d rather have less chibi models, but I’ll take it.

Just need to see more of the gameplay. Doesn’t seem to have much to it from the video, but I’m assuming it’s an early build, so it’s missing most of it’s features

    • otakumike

I disagree, I loved the sprites. I hate the 3D direction most games are going in now. Most likely the next disgaea will use 3D chibi models too…ugh.

      • DesmaX

The sprites were fine (Even though they were over-designed; Much rather have Harada art sprites from Disgaea), problem was everything else

    • vileBrenman

Aww I think the 3d models are adorable. But not as cool as the 2d sprites we know and love

    • Lalum

They look much better in screenshot form.

      • DesmaX

Well, the video is in quite low resolution, so it’s hard to see the graphics like that.

    • xXDGFXx

Mmmm, I wish they incorporated Noizi Ito’s art style into the 3D models :X

  • Astraye

I’m the only one who prefer 2D graphics?

    • Lalum

      No.

    • ARMs7777

3D is fine when done right but this just looks bad compared to the first game.

    • Raharu95

      No, you are not.~

    • katamari damacy

I like the 2D graphics more. They have a charm that 3D visuals don’t have

  • Levitt Lin

Not exactly the biggest fan of the shift in art styles with the 3D. The more condensed environments and the chibi character models make it look more like a handheld title to be honest. The sprites from the first game were definitely a better representation of the character portraits(proportionally) and likely will be more expressive as well.

Still I can’t say I didn’t expect this transition into 3D being a bit rough. At least this shows NIS isn’t stagnating if you will. I like to see this as an opportunity as they take more chances with their visuals, so they don’t end stuck with all their games looking like Disgaea. Also I like what I’ve seen of the environments, they look more detailed than TGFP. Also I want to see higher quality video before making any strong judgements.

Plus the screenshots DesmaX posted do make the visuals look a lot more appealing than the low quality video.

  • Soma Schicksal

Ugh, those explosive traps! T.T The game looks amazing though! :D

  • Earthjolly

Ughhh, not sure what to think about the 3D transition. I really loved the beautiful 2D style of GFP

    • Crimson_Cloud

Same here. Especially in chibi form, 3D never appealed to me like that. Somehow I expected more… That static opening is also kinda off putting. I hate when they make full animated opening and then switch to lazy camera flying zoom in and out static image opening. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a game breaker I just wanted to mention it. I don’t mind when it’s for VN or when smaller team is doing it.

Was thinking of getting this but now I’m not so sure…

      • DesmaX

That’s just a trailer, not the opening. Pretty sure it will have a properly animated one

        • Crimson_Cloud

I hope so. I mean it’s not a big deal or game breaker, it’s just that I was a bit disappointed. Love the design of the characters and was prepared to see something like the first game did.

But anyway, the the 3D is just not doing it for me. They should have stick with sprites…

      • Kevin Schwarz

I’m with you, they are not indie companies to do that. They can actually pay to make animated openings, I mean, for the sake of presentation… that;s just lame. Also, the 3D just bland and boring. I swear, I’ve seen indie games with better 3D…

  • DyLaN

Lol the MC have a “protagonist” on his shirt XDDDD Or at least the beta sprite of him. (Would be hilarious if its in the game too)

Still prefer Arul, but Jupiel (Jupiter?) design looks more decent than expected. The 3D models looks better in the screenshot below so I’m OK with it. (Still need that proper trailer though) Also dat Yosei Teikoku OP~

    Edit:

I think the MC said he hates human in one of the lines? ^_^; Wish there sub for the vid since the commentators find it hilarious.

    Edit 2:

Holy shit the MC got stabbed but Jupiel save him from the army of blacked out portraits. Can’t make out the rest of it though.

    Edit 3:

Huh, the 2 ladies in the vid is cosplaying as the 2 main heroines. Asami Imai and the another seiyu?

  • Roberto

3d sprites looks strange on this

  • Yan Zhao

2D will always be better than 3D.

    That is all.

    • Crimson_Cloud

For Anime type you mean? I don’t know, Guilty Gear Xrd did something extraordinary. And Naruto Ninja Storm has amazing and fluid 3d models as well.

      • Yan Zhao

Depends on the type of games. But aesthetics wise 2D is usually better than 3D if done well. Of course for a game like Naruto Ninja Storm that moves in 3D, 2D is impossible. But for a JRPG like this, it certainly is.

        • Crimson_Cloud

Well yeah, it sure depends. Like for Persona 5, wouldn’t it be better if animation and character models were big like in Ninja Storm? ;)
But for Mega Man like game, 2D is obligatory.ˇˇ

Agreed that some games can make 2D so right you wouldn’t want anything else for that type of game. Hell, from the good old Sega Genesis days, I never get tired of seeing them in various genre today.

    • DyLaN

I never see people complain abt tht in JRPG with regular sized 3D models though…. I mean, some games/devs are good in turning 2D art into 3D models like the one in FFF and Atelier Ayesha

And I think a 2D animation JRPG needs more polishing. *T&E*

      • Crimson_Cloud

Oh yeah, I forgot Atelier series. Indeed, they are pretty to look at.

For this game, they could have made it look like Tales of Legendia. Small model but has features of a regular size character.

  • Lalum

If that’s the opening song then it’s not as catchy as the first game.

    • DesmaX

Doesn’t sound like something I would want to hear while in God Mode

      • transferstudentx

hmm it more like a demon mode in this game or dark god

      • Kornelious

I like it, it’s not as catchy sure, but it feels more mature which kinda fits the games theme

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

I like how the game looks visual wise in 3D, but they made the gameplay look kinda boring. Not the developers, just the people who were playing it I mean lol

  • Hau To

The 3D looks fine to me. Though, I do not like the shown enemies designs. Most of the starters are cute looking.

Edit: I also think the song is going to grow over time with me. Listening to it a second time, I am beginning to like it.

  • SBKJAZZ

It looks a bit like that Curry God game on the Vita… =/

  • Kornelious

Huh, looks like this is playing more in style of Sorcery Saga, which isn’t neccesarily a bad thing, but it does kind of feel unfitting. Still though looks great, and dat music! As awesome as the last games ost
Btw, I’m still stuck on this ultimate choice thing, it seems like a bold step for an NIS game, but that just mixes things up a bit :)

  • Hau To

If they really will have a true ending route. I wonder what would be the requirements to access it. Would it be something like “collect all equipments?” Lol.

  • CleruTesh

So ironic. I feel like I jinxed it somehow. Just a few days ago, I was lamenting the loss of 2D sprites in the Atelier series. Now, they take them out of my most recent favorite game. Are there any sprite based JRPGs left (Besides SRPGs)?

  • Vitonofrio del Rosso

is this a remake or a sequel? in for a sequel :O

  • Kelohmello

The lack of spriting really kills the flavor. I’m lacking hype. I loved the first game too, so this comes as a bit of a disappointment. A large part of its personality is gone.

  • EtherealEarth

The character design makes this game looks like it has a more mature storyline than the first game~

  • FierceOkami

The gameplay reminds me a lot of Sorcery Saga, could be a lot of fun :P But i wonder why they changed the gameplay so much.
