Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Graphics Compared On PS3 And PS4 In English

By Ishaan . April 1, 2014 . 4:01pm

Tecmo Koei have shared comparison footage of Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The video below shows off various scenes and characters from the game, first on PS3, then on PS4.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in North America already. Europe will see the game this Friday.

  • N7 KiNGPiN

You literally have to get to the middle of the video to see the differences. Mostly in AA and armor textures.

  • JMaster3000

I think that i’m not the only one who thinks the graphix are ” bad ” / “ugly ” in these games.

    • Yoshinatsu

Of course not. The Dynasty/Samurai Warriors games have a long history of shitty graphics. They’re slowing becoming acceptable though.

      • Alex Webber

If you call that shitty you are just entitled and you are one of the people that have contributed to the graphics race and causing all game prices to be inflated so thanks buddy for that :)

        • Yoshinatsu

Boy, did that escalate quickly. Just because I said the graphics were shitty doesn’t mean I can’t tolerate them, or that I haven’t played the games. Actually I’ve played all Musou games since Dynasty Warriors 3 on the PS2, including most of the “Xtreme Legends” and “Empires” variants. But as objectively as I can judge, the graphics have always been mediocre, maybe excluding some of the newest releases on the PS3/360. Geez.

  • Wake

As expected, it isn’t much of a leap. There’s also some odd uses of the blur effect, in 3:23 in particular. It’s like Koei discovered the blur effect for the first time and decided to put as much of it as they could xD

  • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate PS4. You know what to do Tecmo Koei EU.

  • revenent hell

Overall I personally think but for a few , in my opinion, minor details I kind of think the PS3 version is “clearer”. For some odd reason everything barring perhaps one person looks “faded” in coloring to me in the PS4 version…..

    • subsamuel01

The PS4 has better lighting and crip graphics, I think its just the video that makes it look bad. Plus it looks like there are more enemies on screen for the PS4 version than the PS3.

      • revenent hell

I don’t really care about a few more enemies on screen, really.Your “better lighting and crisp” translates to foggy and faded looking to me.
Face shadowing is kind of meaningless to me when the person looks like they have been watered down. Some background bits do look “ok” but others look “fogged” out to me where in the PS3 version I can at least make them out.
Its almost moot since I own both the PS3 and PS4 but if I was to buy one I would go the PS3 rout since it looks more clearer to me.

        • Luigi87

Yeah, I think Tecmo Koei experimented too much with depth of field on PS4, and they overdid it, much like how devs were overdoing bloom back in 2005-2006, which takes away from the overall image quality.

        • darke

They’ve removed the baked-in lighting of the character’s textures, which is why they look lighter in full-light. Like the girl in the screencap above who lacks shadows from her armour on her shoulders and chest.

And yeah, the boke/blur effect looks terrible in the combat videos on the ps4; maybe it’ll look less terrible when you’re actually playing it, but I hated the motion blur effect that was used all of last generation on consoles to smooth out and hide poor frame rates. :(

  • Masa

not much difference at all, just the lighting has been tweaked for the ps4 version and a few extra enemies on screen.

    • Cazar

These sort of video comparisons are almost always pointless because the compression causes the resolution discrepancy to be far less noticeable. Regardless of the actual graphical improvements or lack there of, the native 1080p resolution should be a significant improvement when seen in engine on a proper display and without compression. This goes for just about every cross-gen port. Visually it’s mostly just about higher resolution, which YouTube videos aren’t able to express.

      • darke

Higher resolution and 60fps rather then 30fps… which youtube videos also aren’t able to express.

    • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Bull, look at the change in the textures.

      • darke

The textures don’t have baked in shadows on the PS4, compared to the PS3. This is why they look lighter and, ironically, less ‘real’ since it doesn’t look like the renderer supports self-shadowing. A good example is the screencap above, where the armour isn’t casting a shadow on the girl’s skin.

  • Ramón Navas

I noticed that there’re more enemies in the screen in the PS4 version. Can’t wait for a Dynasty Warriors Gundam game on the PS4!

    • Pdugna

Have it all be Cel shaded too like 3 and then just stuff it fool of big battlegrounds with lots of Mobile suits and that sounds really great.

  • leingod

I’m… just waiting for the latest patch that fixes framerate on the Vita version :P

    • Red Veron

It’s baked into the US version. (I think)

      • leingod

Not the latest one, it still has some issues.

        • Red Veron

Framerate? I think that’s what the main fix is in the latest patch in Japan.

          • leingod

Yep, framerate. After the super-smooth DW Next, I’m actually holding out on playing this until the latest patch rolls in. Aparrently it fixes the framerate completely.

          • Red Veron

KT was pretty quick with updates with Toukiden so this should be coming soon.

          • leingod

            Let’s hope so!

  • fool

I saw another comparison with more examples but honestly the characters’ faces (especially the girls) look better on PS3.

    • tubers

PS4: Creepy face + Dead eyes.

      • Servant BerserCAR

The yandere vibe is strong with that one.

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

That’s because the stage is dark. No lighting for eyes to be shiny…in fact, Fan Castle is one of the worse stages to gauge it since it’s in the middle of storm.

        • tubers

If you enlarge the pic, the nostrils don’t look right on the PS4.. it looks well defined on the PS3.. Looks smudged off on the PS4.

    • Duo Maxwell

The PS4′s version actually look flat compare to the PS3′s one. What the fuck is going on?

      • Xerain

        Flat is in right now.

….this is a joke about web design.

      • darke

I’m curious as to what’s going on with her shoulders. Her face is in focus but her right shoulder isn’t? Is the player supposed to be severely nearsighted or something?

    • Red Veron

This looks like they’re using realtime(?) lighting in PS4 while the PS3 version is made to look good without lighting. I haven’t played the PS3 version so I’m okay with (probably) faster load times and party voice chat on PS4.

    • Yan Zhao

This screenshot is one of the few instances where PS3 looks better…lol

  • Kornelious

Why do people seem to think that smoke and blur make a better picture….Although the shine does look pretty nice
Anyways, It sucks that I’m going to have to get this through Gamestop when I get my PS4 since Amazon isn’t selling them for some reason. I might just get the Vita version to tide me over….this game has cross-save compatability right?

  • fairysun

Dynasty Warriors is getting better in English voice acting division.
I usually play DW series with Japanese but in DW 8 the English dub has more soul and better name pronounciation compared to the previous series. Keep up the good work people.

    • Yan Zhao

Until they turned Zhang Liao’s voice from a badass to a goofy character in DW8XL, lolz

  • Skode

People mention the change in faces in cutscenes etc and it is debatable but by the damned is the PS4 version of DW8 looking much better than the older one when you see the actual gameplay in action… battlefields are drastically different as well as how much better the characters look on it.

  • popo123

That looks more like a ps2 versus ps3 footage. Anyway, the changes are pretty obvious, with light rays, depth of field, better anti-aliasing and lighting, more enemies, better textures, better hair on the ps4. Problem is, those can easily be applied on the ps3 version. It’s like they intentionally made the ps3 version blander so they can just add those better graphic features on the ps4 version so people can see a difference.

  • Dan Lieo

Lu Bu is hotter on PS4 so PS4 it is XD

  • Tincho Kudos

    Looks… foggy
