Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster was released in the U.S. on March 18th, and the game sold 208,000 copies during the month, according to research analyst David Gibson.

Gibson shared the data over Twitter.

  • LightningFarron19

    It sold 208,000 copies….in a month?

Didn’t Lightning Returns sell more? From last I checked, it sold 280,000 copies in America. Huh.

    • LustEnvy

Well gee, a port of a decade old game, or a brand new Final Fantasy…

      • Satori Satya

Actually Lightning Returns only sold 164k in its first month.

I remember that because there was some discussion about how Bravely Default beat it with over 200k units sold in the same month.

And insider at neogaf confirmed it.

The discussion was over how LR came at #8 yet BD came at #10. But the thing was that NPD doesn’t track digital sales. And when you added those, BD did beat LR.

Nintendo later confirmed that BD did sell that many copies.

    • SerendipityX

I find it interesting myself since there was some clamoring that the remaster was going to outsell LR. FFX/X-2 got pretty close though just like Bravely Default.

      • Ladius

So far, both Bravely Default and FFXX-2 beat LR in the US (NPD leaks), and FFXX-2 beat LR in Japan too (Media CreateFamitsu).

        • Göran Isacson

Dang, that is some stinging numbers for LR… but do you have a source for them statements?

EDIT: WHOOPS okay found the source for FFX HD sales. Still, has ther ebeen any similar leaks numbering the sales LR have done so far?

      • Satori Satya

BD was able to outsell LR, actually.

    • Ladius

That data is wrong, according to NPD insiders LR sold 165k (PS3+X360) during its first month, and we haven’t an updated figure so far. Final Fantasy XX-2 on the other hand sold 260k between PS3 and Vita in the same timeframe.

    • Monterossa

      I think it’s March 18 to 31…

    • Learii

I think that because Lighting Return not playstation exclusive

      • Yan Zhao

Im pretty sure its because people are just sick of 13 in general. No hate, just saying it as it is.

        • Learii

but is it that why Lighting Return sell more?

          • Yan Zhao

Because its an actual new game and not a remastered port. You’d have to be crazy to expect a remastered port to beat an actual new game from the same company/developers in sale numbers. And the fact that the numbers are so damn close just make LR looks even worse.

          • Learii

oh but don’t people like FF X/X-2 more then LR

          • Yan Zhao

They do, which is another reason why the sale numbers are so close.

    • pimpalicious

Yeah but XIII-3 is not a rerelease and it was on two platforms. Not unexpected at all that it would sell more.

  • That’s not too bad for a remaster.

I’m gonna pick up the game soon enough, probably in late May or June. I owned both games on PS2 but could never keep my focus on them. I’m hoping getting them on a handheld will help motivate completion.

  • James Reilly

This doesn’t sound too impressive based on all the hype this remaster had.

    • LustEnvy

That is a LOT of sales for a remaster of a game made ages ago. And we’re talking US sales. JRPGs don’t sell like they used to, and 200k+ is solid.

  • crazyhunter

Did they said the number of each system?

  • Wake

That’s a solid number for a Sony exclusive. I don’t really care about FFX but I hope it sells more to justify a FFXII Remaster.

    • LustEnvy

Lol, like there’s any doubt that FFXII will be ported eventually. S-E is the king of ports. Now we the sudden surge of interest in ports, FFXII is soon to come. I wouldn’t worry about that at all.

      • Anthony Hadow

Still waiting for FF1 and 2 anniversary to hit PSN Have physical but I want digital

        • AuronZanark

I’d like an HD 2D remaster of Final Fantasy I & II for PS3 and PS Vita and maybe PS4, and maybe that of Final Fantasy V and VI. I’d prefer to have Final Fantasy XII get a full-fledged remake on PS4, which is more feasible than a Final Fantasy VII remake. It could come with a remake of Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.

          • Anthony Hadow

mines is a little more doable. The anniversary editions were made for psp, not to mention they are out on the japanese PSN.

          • AuronZanark

I’m disappointed that the PSP versions of Final Fantasy I & II haven’t been released to U.S. As of now. I’d rather have a 1080p 2D remaster of them and that of Final Fantasy V & VI released both physically and digitally. It’s more feasible than a Final Fantasy VII remake. It took only six months to make the PSP versions of Final Fantasy I & II. They were developed by Tose.

          • Anthony Hadow

Well i have told sony I waned these games, and i have tried to tell square about it as well but neither seem particularly interested in what the fans have to say.

          • AuronZanark

It’s sad to hear something like that. It’ll take many fan requests for it to happen.

      • decus

Doesn’t Sony require HD re-releases on the PS3 to include at least 2 games? I think the biggest issue with FFXII is what game they’d include with it. Porting Revenant Wings would be nice, but kind of high effort I’d think. FF Tactics would make sense in a way or even Tactics Ogre, but not really sure how making those HD would go.

    • Harvey Tejada Loto

      waiting for FF7 remake forever

      • Pyrotek85

It’s harder to remake a game like VII that had early polygons and sprites vs X. They would literally have to remake the whole game. Not saying they won’t ever do it, but it’s far more difficult than HD remasters of more recent games.

        • John Lawson

Would it be to hard for an actual HD Remake? I’ve seen fans re-texture games for nothing yet these morons get paid to do virtually nothing.

          • pimpalicious

The problem is after the tech demo there is going to be fan outcry/rage if the remake ends up anything less than a full retail PS3 quality game.

          • John Lawson

True, but FFX-X2 HD looks worse since the original Issues are now much more apparent, much like how everyone that isn’t a main Character looks like Crap

          • Notquitesure?

I preferred how everyone looked before, to be honest.

        • who what huh

That’s kind of the point though. I would rather have a remake of FF7 that gets rid of the distorted Lego graphics than a remake of a game that came out 5 years later on the next gen’s system with more visual improvements.

          • Pyrotek85

You have your answer then lol. It would be a massive project if they didn’t cut anything from the original and/or expanded on it, added voices (since that would be expected of a current gen release), and no doubt change innumerable other things about it.

And no matter how good it is, there would also be a legion of people who hate it just because they dared to touch a classic, so SE is probably afraid to do anything with it.

      • fairysun

I think I read an interview somewhere.
Square will only remake FF7 if there is another Final Fantasy that can exceed FFVII in term of popularity and sales. Considering FFXIII-3 that launced early this year, you might have to wait that FF7 remake for a while.

        • Monterossa

In term of quality, FFX already surpassed FFVII.

        • Dragon era

That seems rather backwards. Isn’t that saying we’ll only port it if it nets us more money than it could have. I’m not sure why someone would do that except for on the premise of not just milking your IPs for everything they have and respecting fans. However my last statement makes no sense at all when you consider this is Square Enix we are talking about. Making ports is kind of their thing.

        • Spicydicey

Not a bad attitude though, is it? They acknowledge they have not yet made a game as good as FF7 but are striving to make it.

    • Ozymandias

i second that!!! and please make it the international version as well

    • MasterofMidnight

Oh, God, if FFXII is brought to the Vita, I would literally orgasm.

    • KnifeAndFork

Weak for U.S. gaming demographic and install base for a remaster 3 years in the making.
MGS GZ, a paid prologue demo, also sold 204,000 in U.S for PS4 and XB1, while selling 74,000 for PS3 and 360, and 300,000 in Japan alone.
      Also weak numbers..

  • Ben Green

It sold an additional 60k copies on the Vita in the US. And all together, the game sold 1.1 million WW. Or at least that’s what vgchartz says.

    • Kaien

      Yeah, it’s what VGChartz says.

    • Ladius

VGChartz simply updated their figures to reflect info spread by NPD insiders, the one who clarified the 20852 split was creamsugar on NeoGaf.

    • Göran Isacson

Most people say taht VgChartz are notoriously unreliable as far as sales numbers go, they presumably use a lot of pure guesswork to reach their numbers.

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

    Another biased SE coverage!

Why these two SE articles given VIP treatment?!

And this one especially! A tiny tiny small paragraph? With the main message already delivered via the Title?

  • Callonia

Ha, picture of the article amuses me.

  • BlinkingRune

That’s not a bad number. Proud of you, Yunie!

  • Leliana7

It’s a disgrace of a remastered anniv for Yuna and Tidus, because of that garbage audio drama.I can’t believe any so called fan bought this trash! They were happy, and now they are ruined and the series,so everything we loved from 10 and 12 years ago meant nothing!Biggest gaming disgrace ever done to a series I love and the best couple I love for a anniversary!Yuna and Tidus deserved better after all these years. They should be married by now!F***** you Square and Kitase!

    • Nice Boat Quatro

Hahaha! Yeah, the audio drama sucks but it is a masterpiece when compared with that thing humanity decided to call novel.

    • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

Be glad you haven’t looked into the novel that follows after, then you’d really be steaming.

      • Spicydicey

I haven’t played FFX but now I’m really curious- what happens in the audio drama and what happens in the novel?

        • shadowneko003

The novel is something you should never ever touch! It’s just plain horrible. And a disgrace to FFX.

    • Erik

So the audio drama isn’t good. That doesn’t taint the whole package.

    • Daniel Bui

Hey, one audio drama doesn’t instantly make the collection trash. If anything, just ignore it and pretend it doesn’t exist. Hard I know, but just try. I hate it as much as you do, but I still bought it because I love FFX that much.

    • FivePointedTheStar

I felt that the Audio Drama was a way too obvious “We can’t give them a happy ending forever because we can’t continue the series if we want a FFX-3” move. Pretty dickish if you ask me, but it is how it is. I hate the audio drama as much as you do, but FFX and FFX-2 are great on their own.

    • Hinataharem

I just pass it off as non-canon

    • Ozymandias

calm your tits!!! if you didn’t like the audio drama you didn’t have to listen to it. or better yet if you didn’t like the game you didn’t have to buy it and play it

  • Ladius

According to NPD insiders, the actual data for Final Fantasy XX-2 is 260k, split between 208k on PS3 and 52k on Vita.

Here’s creamsugar clarifying the sales split and 208k being only the PS3 figure:

Here is the resume for all known data and leaks from this month’s NPD:

    • Göran Isacson

Oooh, Titanfall sold pretty darn well. At least in the software sales, it seems like MS has won over Sony and their Infamous exclusive. Didn’t expect Yoshis New Island to have such relatively high sales though, that game didn’t exactly receive favorable reviews…

  • Nice Boat Quatro

If this keeps up, then I think SE will really make a FFX-3.

  • otakumike

Good, hopefully this motivates SE to make FFX-3. I need more Chuami.

  • DuskSharkEX

I hope these sales are good enough to warrant a FFXII: ZJS HD.

    • Prithivi

      That would be awesome!

    • Ric Vazquez

  • Daniel Bui

Not bad at all. I was actually expecting less. Love the game to death. Now if only they hadn’t tacked on a certain unnecessary audio drama, it would have been the perfect port.

  • Awrans

Speaking of FFVII, they’re going to destroy everything if they remake final fantasy vii. It is great just the way it is

  • leingod

So, is that good? I hope it is! Wanna see more classic FFs remastered and remade. *cough XII VI VII VIII IX cough*

  • Skode

Not sure if thats a decent figure or not but hey its all good when you think Europe will have done its bit too and the fact ive not seen this on shelves (had to get my copy online). Mostly im interested in how Japan took to this – they are the bread and butter for Square Enix and will dictate far better any more HD remasters than anyone and everyone over in the west.

Im gonna be controversial compared to the masses though in not wanting an FFX-3, i fear they would only mess it up. FFX-2 was terrible when compared to the original, i dont want them treading on things even more as im not sure just how many of the original FFX team are even still lingering about at SE these days.
