Tales of Zestiria’s Second Trailer Highlights All The New Characters

By Sato . April 25, 2014 . 9:37pm

During the ongoing NicoNico Super Meeting 3 this weekend, Bandai Namco held a special stage, where they showcased the latest trailer for Tales of Zestiria. It provides a closer look at the recently revealed character Laila and more.

The trailer starts out with a narrator stating that humans are too powerless, and when times are at a loss, people will pray for the appearance of a Monk (or Doshi). Tales of Zestiria will be telling the “story of the Monks” that takes place in the “era of disasters”.

During the trailer, the protagonist Slay also mentions that he dreams of finding a way that allows humans and those of the Heavenly Tribe to happily live together, similar to the days of the “legendary era”.

We also get to see Slay, who is about to pull out the holy sword, state that he is ready to become a Monk. Before doing so, Laila warns him that it would mean he shall become her vessel and will have to carry the fate on his back.

Slay confidently responds by saying that he believes the dream he’s chasing might be a way to save mankind and the Heavenly Tribe, and if that’s the case, he’ll become a Monk.

Tales of Zestiria is currently in development for PlayStation 3.

  • MrTyrant

    Looking good specially the battles.

  • BizarreJelly

Obligatory Tales loli/shota party member will be revealed next

    • JustThisOne

H-Huh? You mean Edna isn’t that already?

I was kind of betting on the “old man” character to be revealed next.

      • decus

Agreed. It needs an old man to balance out, if they’re sticking to 6 pcs, an all slay harem party. Even the guy seems like a harem member.

        • God

You mean Miclio? Bitch, he is the KING of that harem!

      • BizarreJelly

She’s not loli enough :P you may be right, should either be a shota or the token male over 30 next, gotta even out the gender count!

    • Izzeltrioum

I just want another Barbatos-tier villain.

      Am I asking that much?

      • No you are not. A great group of heroes needs even stronger foes. They need to make another well flushed out group of foes like those that were in Abyss.

        • Samsara09

yeah, the six god generals and the chimeriad were quite cool.

      • Samsara09

Was Barbatos all that stuff people say?But yeah,we need a kickass villain.

    • Samsara09

      wouldn’t that be Edna?

  • The party’s looking good and the actions all there in battle. Well done so far Namco.

  • Raine

I’m getting this feeling that the Heavenly Tribe are dragons.

Or at least the Dragons aren’t the sort of creature they’re being advertised as!

    • Maybe it’s both. Maybe the H Tribe are drakes but in human form. And there are some bad drakes that are moving against the heroes. And they can switch forms too.

    • Samsara09

maybe the dragons were people but were corrupted?Or maybe they were family of heaven….

    • beepboopity

Or maybe dragons are doushis after they complete their monk transformation? It says they suddenly dissappeared.

  • Izzeltrioum

Thats…. the SS-LMBS EVOLVED [email protected]#@#€#@[email protected]|#@|#|@~|@#@|# Those camera angles HNNNGH.

It looks pretty solid and fast-paced! Let alone EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER will be user-friendly just like Graces!

And Darn God Bamco that Mo-Cap is incredibly outstanding. Stupid internet-phenomena images, here they come >_>.

    • Yeah it’s looks like Graces’ battle system but with the ability to jump at any time. I wonder if some non-humans may join the cast and have their move sets and movements that show off this new system even more.

      • Kornelious

It;s look Graces and Xillia’s battle system combined…A GODLY compination :)

        • True. They just better make it so you can jump when you want and have lots of mystic artes done in a row in battle.

  • Right now I’m wondering what magic will be like culturally in the game. Can anyone learn it? Or is it for only pure of heart people? Or can only pure people learn Heavenly artes and non-pures are learn other kinds of spells? The reason why I ask is, I doubt there’d be a LOT of people in the world consider “pure”. So almost no one would be able to do spells. It’d be like 1 out of ever 100 people. But maybe they want that kind of ratio. Maybe too much magic would make the war between those two kingdoms worst.

EDIT: Also I think it might get predictable if every time a really zen and peaceful person came along we could guess they’d be considered pure and gain the power.

    • Arcana Drill

It was kinda confirmed that magic users = Heavenly tribe characters (the silver hair guy, Edna and Laila each one with one element) and human characters = melee.

      • But it seems like Slay is doing magic too. He’s putting wind around his sword. He doing tornado-like slashes giving off spinning gusts. Having elemental stuff added to your weapon by your own will isn’t magic?

        • Arcana Drill

Well this is a tricky question, in other tales there are swordsman MC characters can do things like that and the plot says they have zero magic ability, like phantasia where they had to recruit an elf to the party cause humans couldnt use magic, but Cless (MC) could do many magic imbued like attacks.

Buuut dunno how they will treat this in this game.

          • I see what you mean. Same comes up in early Star Ocean games (first two). But I just can’t see Slay doing spell any other way. He doesn’t look the stationary, say a poem, and cast type.

        • Samsara09

well, tecnically magic requires you to cast it.Elemental artes are different.

    • God

As a relativist, i really, really, really hope it hasn’t nothing to do with the “pureness” of one’s heart, unless said pureness is related to something like the control of you own emotions or something like that.

      • JustThisOne

        Also, this might interest you!

VJump further elaborates that the Hyouma aren’t just impurities, but rather, the actual monsters within the game. These monsters are apparently born from the bad or impure desires or lust of humans. What happens is that the humans’ impure thoughts affect or corrupt normal creatures in the world, thereby turning them into monsters or Hyouma.

So… kind of? It’s gettin’ to the realm of Shadows/Personas! :>

        • Samsara09

could a person or even a heavenly being be corrupted and turned into a monster?

          • Hopefully. That would but a new spin on all this too.

          • JustThisOne

I dunno, but if I had to guess: Yes.

There’s this weird line the same article that says Edna’s glove could be hiding something. (Though, that might be speculation from the magazine itself.) I personally think she’s already been tainted, and that’s why she’s wary of humans.

Of course, this is all just wild guessing on my part. >__> Ultimately, the answer is still up in the air.

          • Samsara09

yes, seeing you say it,it makes sense.I was already thinking that.Guess we will probably have a boss fight against Edna… healing her will probably be a plot point.

        • God

Getting slightly pissed… not on a world destroying scale, but a few small countries may suffer some earthquakes in the following days…

      • It would be good that way. Emotions have been tied to spirituality. In any case, they will do it in a way, hopefully not in a corny way.

        • God

It’s free to dream, but sadly, odds are it’s gonna be corny as fuck.

    • JustThisOne

I think “pure” are just people that aren’t “tainted with impurities”. Slay is “pure” because he hasn’t been exposed to the outside world… ever.

If I remember correctly, “impurities” are bad for the Heavenly Being race. So if I’m correct, the reason why they flock to Slay is because he’s the least poisonous to them. Laila also talks about contracts. So far, there’s a Heavenly Being character for every element, with the exception of wind. I think Slay gains elements to his attacks with every contract.

Sorry for the long roundabout answer… In summary, I think Heavenly Beings, and whoever they make contracts with, can use magic. That’s just my theory, though. Maybe they’ll find ways, later in the game, to kind of brute force these contracts though, haha.

      • Don’t worry about it. Better for a long answer than one that too short. I think that may be it. I’m just scared how predictable it could be. But this isn’t their first rodeo. They find a way to keep us guessing.

  • Ladius

As I said in another place, I think Zestiria is looking great so far. The battle system seems to be the heir of Graces f’s, and having a traditional fantasy setting is a really nice change of pace compared to the latest mothership games (I really liked the kind of setting they created for the Xillia games, though, especially since it let them build a direct sequel with a distinctly different identity that I’m really looking forward to play). The Arthurian references in Zestiria are also an interesting twist, I wonder how far they will take them.

The best part, however, is that we already know it’s coming west.

  • This is looking pretty sweet. Love all the action they showed in the trailer (gameplay included). Can’t wait to see what info we’ll get on the game next.

  • revenent hell

I have to say it , the character faces make me think they have had way to much Botox. Its like other than their default face type any emotion other than that cant cross their face to any extreme.

I just find it terribly creepy when an “emotion” isn’t capable of being reflected by the character in a game and it tends to be one of the first things I’ll notice when tidbits of it are shown…

I probably wouldn’t have noticed it quite as much as I did if the characters shown hadn’t all had the overall same “face” set in later parts of the video as when they where first shown

    • Tiredman

Yeah, I see what you mean, its the eyes. That is one thing I really liked about Graces F, the faces actually had emotion to them. I think the Tales of developers are getting into a habit of trying to release more Tales of games which means they are cutting corners. Or, hopefully the faces will be fixed by the time the game releases. Just have to cross our fingers.

      • Slayven19

Go back and watch graces F early trailers and you’ll see they didn’t have jack. Besides that graces F models made the emotion seem kinda irrelevant with how they looked.

        • Tiredman

I don’t know, I rather liked it. They looked serious when they needed to be serious, light hearted when they needed to be light hearted, scared when they needed to be scared, and so on. I am tired of realistic graphics in almost every console game, so models like Graces makes me smile and enjoy myself a whole lot more. Huge fan of sophie’s model for instance, especially in the epilogue chapter.

          • Aimmi

I don’t see why they can’t do give emotion to their faces. They did it in Vesperia, and other Tales games.

    • Samsara09

      well,I can understand you,somewhat.
Emotion is something important, but you are considering it far too much.
If you crave so much, you could just watch a theater play. Also, this trailer is far to short to judge and entire game.I saw many emotions here.

      • revenent hell

I expect characters in a game to portray emotion other than “my face is frozen”. It’s an immersion thing. To properly give a shit about what’s going on in a game and with its characters I need to believe they are more than ventriloquist dolls and have feelings that show on their faces.

Just because you happen to be fine with characters sporting the same expression for an entirety of a game dose not mean everyone else is fine with it.

Oh, and since no emotions are fine with you perhaps you should go play with paper dolls instead of video games? Its nice when people make ignorant judgments on what others should do like that isn’t it?

    • Yeah, before I was thinking the 3D looked best here. ToGf looked strongly uncanny valley to me, and ToX+2 looked a bit better, and I thought this was improved but now I see it’s not as great as I thought. It still looks prettier overall, but it’s like the immersion of the artstyles to 3D had to absorb what could have been improved emotive quality.

      • revenent hell

I kind of think Tales of Vesperia had the best look to it :D
This one also looks good to me as well but lack of reflected emotion has quickly become my pet peeve in games. From basic daily living and human interaction developers should know expressions change when a person has a feeling, characters in games should reflect this as well.

        • I agree~! And you would think, right?

          • Kornelious

I reminds me of the way Xillia looked, which is strange because they said it only looked like that to make it more mature for the 15th aniversary……So that either means they lied, they didn’t feel like creating new models, or enough people liked the style to keep it, but who knows…..

          • Oh, I didn’t know that; that’s especially interesting info~.

  • Loli Summoner

Slay’s look is growing on me, before I didn’t like the way he looked but now…I’m digging it.
His look fits the world he’s in, ya know, the whole fantasy medieval theme. Also, the girls are really cute! <3 I really like the 3d models too! Oh and MY NEW WAIFU! EDNA! Look at them adorable boots <3

    • Thrasher429

That dress and that colour scheme <3

    • decus

It’s kagura from gintama. Hope they do gintama costume DLC this time around.

      • InfernoCommander

Literally the first thing I thought of when I saw Edna.

      • BillyMK

They had one for God Eater 2, why not?

    • TrueDefault

Bright-haired lolis are always so adorable.

    • Tiredman

Looks are ok, but I can’t take the name Slay seriously. Getting a little tired of over the top naming conventions in rpg’s. I complain, but I will be buying this game day one, possibly the collectors edition as long as there is one that isn’t a $130. But honestly, Slay……

      • DyLaN

While I don’t mind Slay, but I have a feeling the localization will edit his name just like Shing/Kor or Raine/Refill.

      • Wappuli

There hasn’t yet been any official romanization for any of the names. So while it will be atleast something similar the Slay, it doesn’t yet mean that it’s exactly that.

      • eh, used to paying $150 for collectors editions. Sucks to be me. Id import TOX2, but it would be the same price anyway T.T

      • Kornelious

The name kinda felt like a joke at first to, but if you just say it over and over again it starts to sound weird, and thus a name is created lol XD
And’ I don’t care how much the Collectors Edition costs I NEED IT! I’m already buying Xillia 2 twice for both editions anyway……

    • MentalAlliance

Growing on you? Why is everyone so down on Slay’s look? I’ve loved it from the moment it was announced! It’s excellent!

      • Razvaille

        Because Yuri Lowell fanboyism…

        • Darkrise

No because he looks like a generic shounen protagonist. Short black hair with an eager expression. That’s one of the many tired male character staples.

          • Razvaille

Most protagonists of Tales games have generic visuals. Yuri is a stereotypical japanese long-haired swordman. Maybe people want someone like Senel, the most diferent looking protagonist…

          • MrTyrant

            Hated this guy.

          • Razvaille

I hate too. But he has generic visual the people talking about… ????? lol

          • MrTyrant

I like Ludger myself. Many said that he is plain and Tales of team said it was designed as a kind of business man and I like that look.

          • Izzeltrioum

Ludger’s my favorite MC because of–

Not spoiling anything so please wait until TOX2 gets released here.

          • I loved Senel. He had to learn his lessons and grow on you. Liked Yuri too. I didn’t like how most women like Senel, that wasn’t realistic. Harem stories are bad.

Will: “Watch out for the dragon’s breath!”
Senel: “I’m not gonna give it time to breath!”

          • Slayven19

How can you say it wasn’t realistic when people love people for every kind of reason under the sun in real life?

          • True. But how many times do you see a guy with like 5 or 6 women all over him. That never happens to me, or any guys I know. If it happens it’s rare. Most men aren’t celebrities where lots and lots women are all over them. I know it’s played for gags a lot in anime and games. But it’s old. Senel’s cool, but not for that reason. Because he goes to the wire for people. Because he’ll whoop an ass of anyone one who endangers his loved ones. Even if they’re huge and nearly unstoppable.

        • kaotron

Yeah, i really like yuri but i find him super overrated But at the same time I really hate the “generic shonen look”, but angsty teenage protagonist are the bald white space marines of Japan.

    • SoundMatch

Those boots make her look like a munchkin. Shes basically an angel munchkin. 10/10 would fit right in with Neptunia.

    • Radprofile

By the contrary, I don’t like the boots lol, they don’t match anything else in her costume, also don’t looks like are her size, is like she got some Pirate boots she found randomly.

    • Kornelious

I didn’t like Slay’s look at first either (Mostly the earrings) but at least it makes him look less generic :)

  • s07195

You know, I wonder if the fact that it seems that only Slay can see the Heavenly Tribe will become a point of contention and human party members start wondering whether Slay just isn’t off his mind with delusions of grandeur.

    • Prinnydoom

I think the newest female character the one with long grey hair can see them too. So its not completely ludicrous.

      • Wappuli

Well, she’s also from a Heavenly Tribe so it’s not surprising that she can see them.

      • Samsara09

if she couldn’t see them,I would be actually worried!

    • Samsara09

Well, that will probably happen by the beginning to mid game.By then it will probably be dropped when the game gets more serious.

Alicia has some awareness of the family of heaven. She knows about them even though she can’t see them. She will probably gain the ability.

slay may not be the only one.We still don’t know the specifics about how one can see them

  • Razvaille

I hope a trailer with better quality. Either way the game is amazing, but lack many other things that did not show.

  • Go2hell66

battles look great. just hope e the game doesnt play itself(like ffxiii games)

  • Earthjolly

Please please add a animal character <3 Its been so long since the last playable one

  • Kroz

The battle system looks a lot like Graces (a good thing). If they can some how give me wicked air combos, my prayers would be answered.

    • God

Like symphonia 2? The game that everyone and their mothers hated?

      • LustEnvy

Playing it now, and I don’t hate it.

        • God

I liked it, but my opinion seems to be very unpopular among tales gamers…

      • Kenzor

Vesperia, Innocence and Hearts had air combos before ToS2

        • God

I haven’t played Innocence so i wouldn’t know, but both Hearts and Vesperia where released after ToS2 (only by a few month though).

      • Heropon

Meh no . I like it . It ‘s mile better than Tales Of Xillia

        • God

I liked it too, but most people didn’t.

      • Spirit Macardi

Symphonia 2 is my favorite game in the series. I related more to Emil than any other main character.

        • God

I liked it, but it’s not a popular opinion, and out of curiosity how did you relate to him? The bullying? The split personality? The horny girl following you around? The god-ish creatured sealed within you?

    • KrazyBean

The same guy who made Graces battle system is also making Zestiria’s battle system. I guess that’s why it looks familiar.

    • Izzeltrioum

For Bamco to advertise a programmer’s (Mostly everyone advertises composers, artists or even writers) talent with Zestiria, he must be badass for it. Gladly, he IS.

Well, as Tatsuro Udo was the genious behind DestinyR’s combat system–and you know that air-mastery was a major feature of its exploitable battle system–we should expect Zestiria having a dedicated air-combo schema as well.

      • Kroz

Thats sounds great! I played DestinyR at a friends house and i just loved how much control i had in the air.

  • Nitraion

    Wow Nice…
Okami-like battle mode and camera? :D

  • Prinnydoom

To name a few artes there I saw Kogahazan: Tiger blade, Add pressure: Air pressure, Burn Straight: Burn strike and what looked like Blessed drops. Man this is looking promising, also it good to have a happy go lucky protagonist again.

  • Death Saved

Doesn’t Doshii mean comrade/brother in arms?

    • Wappuli

      Different kanji.

  • God

In the tales saga, there have been many bros worthy of the title of of “King of Bros”, but Miclio is looking very bro-ish, maybe he has a shot at the championship belt?!

  • Mind0105A

    Confirmed. First day buy.

  • Zoozbuh

Oh woooww this game is looking gorgeous. I really love how smooth the animation looks and the detail of the environments. They really seem to be pushing the boat out for this one, since the Tales series has never really been big on graphics. I also love how shiny and slick the character models look. (About the emotion-less thing someone said, Slay’s eyes look a little off. But the other characters don’t look too bad to me)

  • DesmaX

Well, this pretty much confirms transition to battle scenarios.

Guess I shouldn’t be expecting something like no transitions, but it’s still a disappointment.

    • DanielGearSolid

Wouldve been nice, but not a deal breaker

    • KrazyBean

Maybe in the PS4 ‘Tales of’ game.

  • Kioku

The battle system looks freakin awesome without a doubt!!

And Mikulio’s way of talking feels similar to Faize(Star Ocean 4)

    • Kornelious

      Faize was awesome :D

  • MJLahey

Hoping this one has a better story than Graces f and Xillia. While I enjoyed both, they were kinda let downs for me story-wise. Not nearly as good as Abyss or Vesperia. I hear Xillia 2 is better though.

  • megaten666

If only this was cell-shaded like Vesperia…
    Still awesome.

    • Razvaille

Cell-shaded… Open World… Zestiria will turn Dragon Quest VIII :)

      • megaten666

        Not necessarily.
Zestiria’s battle system is more enjoyable :)
I just think that a game that heavily borrows the visuals and styles of mangas should use the drawn-like cell-shaded graphics to resemble them more. Right now, most Tales games looks bland and washed out, it’s not realistic nor “cartoonish”. Vesperia was the best in visual representation.

  • s07195

There’s also a stream for IA/VT COLORFUL gameplay which can be accessed through Marvelous’ page on Nicovideo.

  • Can’t wait.

  • BillyMK

I really hope they go for both English and Japanese audio during the localization this time around. XIllia had some really good dubbing, but I wish I could have experienced the original audio as well, especialy since the game encourages you to play it twice (both characters)

  • MentalAlliance

Mmmmm, yes! Tales, you sexy beast! Keep on doing what you’re doing, I love you! You’re the best!

  • Samsara09

man, those family of heaven are pretty cool.If only someone could translate what Baba said about the battle system.

Well,I wonder.Animals are corrupted and turned into beasts.Could a human or even a family of heaven suffer the same fate?
Also,it would be rather cool if there was someway for the family of heaven to turn himself visible. That way, they could easily pass off as an average person.

I don’t know,a family of heaven wishing to be free like the wind, passing off as a human, would be quite interesting…

since well,we got a “best pal” family of heaven who lived a secluded and sheltered existence(Mirculio),the hermit(Edna),the one that was sealed away in the sword for probably eons(layla)…why not a family of heaven that is disgusted of it?

  • the little blonde girl uses an umbrella?!? i think i found who i will be using as a main…unless there is a suave, older male character(as there usually is) who has an interesting fighting style.

  • I’m getting an older Genis vibe from Micillo. Anyone else getting that?

  • Chaos-Mafioso

    Dat Motoi Sakuraba *-*

  • HerosLight

I really want to see more battles, but I guess that’ll be for E3 or Tales Festival.

Also, I really like Laila’s VA only because she sounds like Kuuko from Nyaruko.

    • Wappuli

That’s because they do share the same VA, Miyu Matsuki.
I’m getting more Yoshinoya(Hidamari Sketch) vibes from Laila myself.

      • HerosLight

I knew it was. I haven’t watched any other anime with Miyu Matsuki in it. :P

  • Jesse

    Someone subbed the new trailer:

    • KrazyBean

      • Kornelious

Awesome! It’s much better being able to know what they’re saying, And that makes it awesome x10 :P

    • Yay, thanks for the link!

  • Wahoo! I’m so excited! I haven’t been this excited in a while about a Tales game (since start through later info, anyway).

Also, this is the weekend of fantastic news coming out on NicNico. The Tales of video, and then tomorrow with BSSM. ♥

  • MrJechgo

    Must… not… get… spoiled DX
(Seriously though, I stopped watching Tales trailers because they almost reveal TMI…; Xillia and Xillia 2 were no different.)

  • Kornelious

Finnaly a traiiler showing off the characters and gameplay! it definently looks like the gameplay is from Graces, and that’s awesome cuz I loved that battle system. So far we’ve seen footage of the first 5 characters, the first few areas, and the beggining of the plot. Hopefully in the next one we can see more party members, some antagonist’s and some of the anime scenes :D

  • Ric Vazquez

  • fairysun

Where’s the adult character? The one that usually betrays our team of angsty teenagers? :P

  • Aimmi

So um..why does Miclio have a bow in the trailer?

  • Aimmi

“Pulling the holy sword out and becoming a monk.”
Anyone else think of Arthur and the sword in the stone?
