Square Enix Considering Bringing Dragon Quest X “Overseas”

By Ishaan . May 12, 2014 . 12:02pm

In a financial results briefing released this morning, Square Enix outlined a few of the company’s major initiatives going forward. These are:

  • New major games released for smart devices, with more to come.

  • Expanding overseas activities, primarily in Asia, including the introduction of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in mainland China. Introducing new games for online and smart devices through local partners in Asian territories.

  • Launch of large‐scale online titles developed by Western studios starting from the fiscal year ending March 2015.

Final Fantasy Agito, a new Final Fantasy game for smart devices in Japan, is listed one of Square’s major titles, along with a sequel to Kaku-San Sei Million Arthur, slated for release this calendar year. Square Enix also shared that Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light has seen over 5 million downloads since its release.

Finally, Square Enix also say that they are considering bringing Dragon Quest X “overseas,” but by this, they could mean that they plan to release the title in Asian territories.

  • Smooosh

    Clickbait! :P

    • 하세요

Now now, they did put up air quotes around overseas.

      • Smooosh

That’s why I gave them the friendly “:P”-Version!

  • James Enk

personally i am not interested in a DQ MMO but i am sure some ppl are going to be happy to see in it in the west

  • Guest

I know a lot of people are usually very ‘meh’ about the idea of Dragon Quest X, but if they brought this game over to PC/Wii U, I’d really consider buying it, it looks really interesting.

    • Armane

As someone who feels kind of ‘meh’ about DQX, I’d at least try it if it ever comes over.

  • Altin

Last time I checked, Squeenix also considered bringing over FF Type-0.

  • Roberto

    >Considering
they say the same thing with type-0

    • Attribule

Maybe because considering means they’re thinking about it? Considering =/= confirmation.

They considered it, and most likely they concluded that they shouldn’t bring it over. Same could happen for Dragon Quest X. I’d rather a company consider something than to just brush it off immediately, regardless of the outcome.

      • Terraforce77

I think he was joking about the fact that honestly, this “consideration” doesn’t mean jack s*** to us, if Type-0 serves as a reference.

        • gk2012

Last thing I heard about Type-0′s localization is that they’re already planning it. And this is something that was written on something that was published by SE, if I recall correctly. On Type-0′s Ultimania, I think?

But now we’re left with a bunch of fans that wants to let other fans play the game.

          • Digidyne017

At least those “fans” have made more progress, than, SE if any. This “consideration” has been nothing more than dangling a carrot in a starving, nearly dead rabbit’s face, and wondering “hmm, do you think they’ve waited long enough? Nah…we’ve got more time to work this”. If SE wants money, they know where to find us, and know exactly what to put in our stores…

          • Guest

Last I heard a fan translation was being done instead

          • gk2012

Isn’t that what I just said?

          • Terraforce77

Yes they did say that; like 5 years ago when the PSP was still in circulation. Now they have to change it to become compatible with the Vita if they still plan on bringing it overseas.

And I’m pretty excited about that fan project you mentioned. It’s funny how such an unofficial source can prepare a translation for a game that SE couldn’t (or chose not to) translate in 5 years.

  • Fox

Dragon Quest VII, however, evident k you doesn’t stand a chance.

  • 3PointDecoupage

    Theyre just f*cking with us.

  • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

Don’t do that. We want Dragon Quest VII!

    • awat

Heck YES i only want the GodDamn DQVII ~! Q Q they so unfair

  • dboyz

Square Enix’s considering….I’m not falling for this again!!

  • DesmaX

Pretty sure they’ll only bring the PC version over

  • Zer0faith

Well done I fell for it.
With each passing day Siliconera grows wiser in the dark arts of the clickbait.

  • SlickRoach

I’d buy a Wii U in a heartbeat if DQX came to NA man…

  • BillyMK

There was a dark time in my life when I liked SE and Capcom. Nowadays I look up to Atlus, XSeed, NISA and Bamco. Thus I became a much happier gamer.

    • ronin4life

I never liked SE much(or disliked) and Capcom meant little to me before Ace Attorney and later MonHun.

So I don’t really get the hate the later gets(I understand WHY, and know all the reasons, but I sometimes feel it is disproportionate. Aside from not being affected personally), and still don’t really care about the former in any great negative or positive way. ^ ,^

    • Revyatheworldeater .

I feel the same way… but also include actyl and TK for who I look up to.

    • Ultimate Gattai

TBH I often felt like Square-Enix never treated it’s fans overly well
(you can include NISA when it comes to games other then Disgaea)
compared to some of the other companies you mentioned. That and they’re
only just learning their lesson that people outside of Japan want JRPGs
(Or maybe they haven’t considering this article’s content).

    • Herok♞

I would say you are still in a dark time if you can’t look at games individually and not companies as a whole, I enjoy what I want from whoever at anytime

      • saxophone15

This is how I am. Why waste time lamenting over a specific company? I just buy and enjoy whatever games I like and ignore the games I don’t. That is what makes me a happy gamer.

      • BillyMK

I didn’t really meant to sound like a hater. Heck, I own a bunch of Capcom and SE games. I’ll happily play their games whenever I feel like it. It’s just that as a Megaman and DQ fan I’ve been getting screwed by this companies the last couple of years.

On the other hand I’ve been playing a lot of games from these other companies I mentioned and the reason I like them is that they are investing in the localization of more niche games.

You can’t really condemn a hole company because of a single game, but lately we get more and more disappointment from SE. (Capcom was just megaman anyway).

        • Herok♞

I personally have been consistently happy with Square as a whole but I certainly see why you would be unhappy with them, in Capcom’s case they do make some pretty stupid moves especially with all the megaman trolling.

  • Kotori Itsuka

wow, japan is getting a little TOO generous about localazing now, but I like it-ttebager

  • AuraGuyChris

“Finally, Square Enix also say that they are considering bringing Dragon Quest X “overseas,” but by this, they could mean that they plan to release the title in Asian territories.”

…Well, if that’s true, that should explain why they keep repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Folks. If you can’t speak to the topic. Then post somewhere else. Full thread warning.

    • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

Is there a reason my previous comment was removed?

  • Kaetsu

I would love it if Square Enix brought DQX over even if it’s just the PC version(I’d rather have the Wii U version). It just sucks because it sounds like they haven’t even started on a western release.

  • revenent hell

You know….. I give SE kudos on how much they mention that they are giving games “consideration” for releasing in whatever area it may be but deep down I kind of wish they wouldn’t even mention anything in regards to a specific game unless they actually have some follow through of it in a timely manner.
Considering the length of time I have waited for word on certain games I kind of wish my hope was blind instead of them giving me words to increase said hope to hear nothing of it later on.

  • DeathDias71

From this news it seems like most of their resources must be focused on FFXV and KH3…Here is to hoping that we’ll see something more at E3 this year.

  • Draparde

I hope they do bring X over. i’m not gonna get excited about it until more info comes though

  • Ms_Fortune

How about you give me DQ7 Squeenix.

  • CozyAndWarm

Dang it Square. DQX on Wii U WOULD be swell, but I still really want DQ7 and the two DQM games on 3DS.

Why is this so difficult for you? Why does it take so many years for this? Why is every localization this difficult “considering” process for you? Why does Nintendo have to do all the heavy lifting just to get one of your games here?

    • LightZero

Because they want guarantee money hence they are over reliant on FF and KH whereas their other IP get neglected.

    • Anthony Hadow

I agree release the games already! I have been waiting years for lots of games from SE getting really tired of it.

    • Blaz

      Needs more… advertisement. *Licks lips.*

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

I *really* don’t want to play a MMO, but it is Dragon Quest.
Give me VII too. There’s two publishers that work with this series and a bunch of Japan only games?

  • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

So me suggesting a bundle of DQ 7 & 8 gets removed but people calling the article click baitng or asking for FF games is fine? Think I’m done with Siliconera.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Console requests will get deleted. Asking for the extant DQ7 on the 3DS isn’t one — the rest of the post was.

      • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

Yeah that makes so much sense. Question, is that for all articles? Because a few of my comments that aren’t “request” have been removed. I’m not a fan of censoring people but whatever.

        • M’iau M’iaut

          http://www.siliconera.com/open-thread/

Our rules are posted here. I see a total of 3 posts which were deleted. This one, another from when things got generally ugly overall on the ninty thread, and one from 9 months ago which also involved console requests.

          • http://people.ign.com/princerevolver Surgeon Of Death

And yet other articles feature comments requesting console games. On the Nintendo thread I simply stated a phobia is a form of fear not hate. It’s ridiculous! But hey it’s your rules.

  • Skode

“Launch of large‐scale ONLINE titles developed by Western studios starting from the fiscal year ending March 2015″. Ugh, we dont need western studios making online titles… they staple IPs Squeenix own like Tomb Raider, Dues Ex and Hitman dont need online.

  • Audie Bakerson

    So… Korea?

  • MK

China or Korea are more likely.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

Dragon Quest X would be the first Wii U game I get if it comes out in America. I’m not holding my breath though.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

La Holding my breath with a iron lung

  • raphael

    Good, hopefully yes.

  • John Pena

I would rather have Dragon Quest VII remake square enix

  • Kari

I cant see them bringing over Agito since zero was its prequel?

  • VeniVidiVici

    Nope. Not falling for this.

    Type-0. Never forget.

  • Andar

Square Enix, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that your ‘major initiatives’ don’t really impress.

  • Anthony Hadow

Bring 10, 7 and Dragon Quest monster games over please!

  • Nu Blitz

Would rather have the cool Dragon Warrior 1&2 remake they did a while back

  • Herok♞

Well if they are considering it you have to take that a face value, I can see this happening their MMOs do ok if not well so I can see them bringing this over. Remember Type-0 wasn’t on the best system for it to be released. Also remember them considering doesn’t mean that they will bring it over, just that the idea crossed their mind, like I just said Type-0 was considered and it didn’t work out, this can be considered and work out fine. But hey either way it will be cool to Bash SE so it doesn’t matter if they make practical business decisions or not.

  • Crimson_Cloud

For what system is more of a question. PC version would be good. But there are higher chances of a private server wtih fan translation then their ”consideration”.

On a side note… the Ogre still looks hot to me. :3

    • J_Joestar

      Ogre is <3

      • Crimson_Cloud

        Marriage material <3

  • TerrenceEncore Jones

In my own head “considering” in this instance means waiting for enough people to beg. While I do want to play DQX i am at the point where I do not care either way, I won’t be playing it.

  • Domo-kun

A E3 announcement for north america, maybe?

  • dante

I want to get into dragon quest.what game should I start with

    • Eilanzer

      7 or 8…no doubt

  • awat

    GIve US DQ7 DAAAMMMIIIITTTT

  • Sylveria Shini

Is it just me, or is this whole thing the exact opposite of what they said not even a month ago when they saw Bravely Default outselling their wank-rag.. I mean FF13-3? Guess they forgot that lesson fast.

  • WolfDuo

“considering” Absolute joke. I mean, people have been asking for it since jp Beta. I could understand them considering it if only a few people asked for it, but it’s been loads. I remember petitions floating around at one point.

  • AndyLC

Thailand probably has the highest amount of Dragon Quest fans outside of Japan, they’d make a killin’ there.

Japanese companies need to realize that there’s more to the world than just Japan, USA, and Europe.
