Mortal Kombat X Coming In 2015 [Update]

By Ishaan . June 2, 2014 . 7:03am

Mortal Kombat X is in development, Warner Bros. announced this morning. The game is slated for release in 2015, and you can view a trailer for the new title below.

Hmmm… is it just me or does that fight look oddly reminiscent of Street Fighter? Sub-Zero’s freeze move animation looks very much like a Hadouken, while Scorpion appears to have picked up Guile’s Flash Kick.

Update: Mortal Kombat X will be released for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 according to the game’s official website.

    Crappy rap… yay -_-

But in all honesty, for some reason that Scorpion costumes makes a part of me want an actually serious and gritty MK, with all that violence actually having weight. With fatalities so down to earth and actually genuinely disturbing, as opposed to the cartoony, that Soccer Moms would actually have a point for once…
But then I realize that it’ll probably be cringe worthy and unfitting for MK in general. I mean, for all it’s proposed grittiness, even Legacy got rather silly and campy, especially by the second season.

    • French

thats not rap there is no genre called rap… that music is hip hop.

      • Loli Summoner

        You tell em!

    • Shippoyasha

MK9 did get people talking though. The fatalities were extremely gory even if cartoony. And the ‘realistic’ gore and injuries was with the X-ray moves. Those were disturbingly and awesomely gruesome.

  • Roberto

    DAT trailer
    but that music meh

    • Altin

In all honesty, it`s better than all of that clichéd wub wub crap that appears in every game trailer (Hello Sonic Boom and Teef).

      • Sion Cruz

I think the music could work if that’s the vibe you’re going for [Max Anarchy, Mad world]. I agree that its better than hearing bangarang all the time. Skrillex [dubstep] worked briefly in Lollipop Chainsaw as a playlist song.

        • H.A.MK

The music really doesn’t fit here at all. I think it would have been better if they went with something a little bit Gladiator-ish. I really hope that the game turns out like the trailer

          • John Diamond

Iunno. It fits really. I prefer it when they go for something original rather than your generic dubstep/movie trailer ish music

          • Hiphop does not fit Mortal Kombat like…at all.

As Jax’s theme maybe but MK overall? Eww no.

          • John Diamond

each to his own as i say.
but again, it’s just a reveal trailer, it’s something new, gotta appreciate it once in a while. It gives me a Street Fighter 3rd strike feel

          • Ronldbx6

The beat was sick! I enjoyed the vibe it gave the trailer. Something different.

          • John Diamond

            haha, it’s like 2milli.
the rapper isn’t all that good, the beat carry’s the whole thing

          • Ronldbx6

Jax’s theme? Why, only because he’s black?

    • John Hayabusa

So much improvement in both gameplay and graphic terms in this little trailer. Silly rap music aside, this shows that the game is looking to be exceptionally awesome.

  • -Misaki-

I hope they speed up the battle system.

  • Masa

Never been able to get into these games, the combat i find too clunky and weird, plus i don’t like the characters.

  • eincvajdraj

amazon has listed MKX for both PS3 and 360 as well as PC, PS4 and Xbone.

    • subsamuel01

Man, hope the quality of the next gen version doesn’t dip just so they can port it to last gen consoles.

      • leingod

That’s what I hope too. At least as far as I know, NRS is only working on the PS4 / XB1 versions. They’re outsourcing the others.

    • CozyAndWarm

No reason Wii U can’t be included too then. Come on Warner Bros.

  • I hope the gameplay looks like this plus looks like they are adding the stage fighting like in Injustice:GAU. Cool The BGM is not that bad. Maybe will get some in-game ost raps.

  • French

good song choice as its different to what i would have normally expected.
graphics look cool but whats most important is gameplay, will wait for more developments.

    • Ronldbx6

The beat was sick! I enjoyed the vibe it gave the trailer. Something different.

  • Keima88

I learned my lesson. Not going to buy a new fighting game at launch. (I bought street fighter 4, Persona 4 arena and mortal kombat 9 at launch and they had better editions/addons later)

So I will wait for the mortal kombat eXtreme edition or something like that.

    • Haganeren

If those better edition/addon don’t come out 6 months after the first it’s fine by me….. But sometime it does…

      • Card

Persona 4 Ultimax came out over a year after the original if you count the arcade to arcade release. If you’re counting the console release timeline, it’s been over two years, so I don’t regret getting P4A at launch.

        • Haganeren

I’m European so… I think i’m screwed either way… If they release it on the spot it would be only one year since the last P4A if they release it one year after with region locking all over again it’s worse !

But yeah, i suppose i don’t mind that much since I quite liked the story mode…

          • Card

I dunno, Atlas is taking over releasing games in the UK from what I heard. And since Index no longer owns Atlus, they may not region lock the game this time around. (My only guess is they did that to prevent reverse importing so Index could make as much money as possible from the game)

    • Ace

      Man, you’re totally right.

    • greeeed

Persona 4 arena us release date: 08/07/12

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax release date: Q4 2014

    • leingod

Sure man, if you’re up to waiting an extra year or so.

Personally, I think I get the extra money’s worth in hours and hours of play value.

  • persona_yuji

Looked great, but that music was just plain old sh*t.

  • John Lawson

Meh, sounds like a rap remix of one of the old BGMs from MK2, but still… Rap doesn’t really work for fighting games….. unless it’s Def Jam

  • DivinePhoenix69

Looks pretty sweet, i’ll definately be keeping an eye on this. Also i guess i’m the only one who actually liked the music in the trailer?

  • Guest

I wonder if this game will continue off MK 9 or be a completely different game. If it follows MK 9, looks like Raiden fucked up the timeline and realms..

    • MrTyrant

They’d better follow that. Would be interesting to see.

    • Roll Caskett

If you look up the ending, they definitely going to continue the story from MK 9. MK X is basically going to be MK 4 reboot.

      • Guest

But the question is, why are Sub Zero and Scorpion alive? I know it’s early to ask, but considering MK9’s ending..

        • James Reilly

If your familiar with MK, characters don’t stay dead for long.

        • leingod

Dragon Balls? Dunno. Maybe he will be playable but just not part of the story mode. Who knows?

  • “May contain content inappropriate for children”

    Well then.

  • DesmaX

Boy, it does look fantastic. Cool music, too

    • RagingTiger44

Finally, someone that doesn’t hate hip-hop.

      • aizen310

It’s just trailer graphics. Remember Watch Dogs. And Colonial Marines.

      • chibidw

It can make a already great trailer legendary.

        • Namuro

What? How come I’ve never seen this…

I mean, why? Why is this being remade…? Uh, revived…whatever.

      • NightzeroAX

Would of been better with Wu-Tang.

    • Fub Frank

I like the music as well. People that say it doesn’t fit have too many per-conceived notions about what music should be used for MK or other fighting games.

  • Brimfyre

    “fueled by next gen technology”

Pfft. Who cares. Wake me when it’s got Blast Processing.

    • French

      What is that ?

    • Critic2029

I’ll be interested when it has the 686 prototype with the artificial intelligence RISC chip.

  • RazeXI

good stuff, hah, poor sub-zero can not catch a break in this rebooted universe xD

  • The fight looks like the one between elder sub zero and scorpion, i suppose the next MK will have more interactive stage other than fatalities

  • Ni ~Algidus~

Scorpion beign scorpion and Sub Zero getting ass kicked as always.
is this bad cgi or gameplay footage?
Oh look, if it isn’t rock as the main music the internet already hate it

  • Eric Harris

You guys realize they are not going to have spoken hip hop during actual gameplay right? So trailer music does not matter even 1 iota.

    • French

People are just quick to criticise

  • Christopher

That was perhaps some of the worst music I have ever heard.

  • WolfDuo

I wished so hard for Shaolin Monks… Oh well.

  • BitBoy

And for any Spanish fans here’s the trailer:

    …not that there’s much to translate… ;)

  • Now only if… No its to crazy to think of it… But what if they put GUILE THEME SONG INSTEAD! Since it fits about everything hahaha But its really its the bees knees right now to have this come

  • Steven Hunt

Scorpion’s had that move since Deadly Alliance.
Also: WB UK’s twitter and confirm it’s on both current PlayStations and Xboxes, as well as PC

  • Namuro

Aah, I knew Scorpion would win. He’s pretty much became the representative character of the series.

Looks nice, but seeing all those rubbery limbs when they get broken / bent, makes it seems like a match between two Stretch Armstrongs.

Looking at how the characters can use parts of the environment like making a weapon out of the branch, or swing on the tree, makes me think that they’re ripping off Injustice, but then I remember who the developer was…

When I see the letter “X” in the title, I immediately thought of Jason X for some reason, LOL. Speaking of which, it’s kinda weird to see the game uses a Roman numeral all of a sudden. I guess “X” just seems cooler than 10…

Also, since everyone seems to comment on the music. I thought it was a good music, but it doesn’t fit the trailer…

    AT ALL…

  • MaskedHeroxx

Ttttttthe wizzz .but mortal combats trash. Man I cant wait to see streetfighter and tekken on next gen

  • Roll Caskett

I am interested to see the roster selection for this game. Wonder how many fighter they gonna put this time. Hope it more than MK9.

    Hype for E3 !!!!!!!

  • XaviIniesta

    Mortal Kombat marketers.

    • James Reilly

If that was true we would be hearing stuff like Aerosmith during this trailer.

      • leingod

I think Aerosmith would be just adults being adults :P

  • Eder García

website up, it shows Xbox 360 and PS3 release too, no WiiU

  • Love the music.

  • Kango234

Looking at the comments, reminds me why this is my favorite gaming site.

  • ER_Mac3

The costume design is PERFECT! Can’t wait to see more at E3!
Just a little lost though considering Sub Zero was not supposed to be human, but I’m pretty sure they’ll have a good (or not) explanation for that LOL
Hope we see some MK4 characters at E3 too!

EDIT: By the way, Scorpion has his Backflip Kick since MKDA. It’s implemented in MK2011 as a part of a combo o/

  • SonicRulez

    Sub-Zero never wins.

  • Astrotrain

    Horrible music.

  • DriftSlave

MK is pretty hype already…In Ed Boon I Trust.

  • Dexterino

Music sucked… lolz. Cool to see another Mortal Kombat game.

  • Looking awesome.
I could do without the music tho.

  • CozyAndWarm

    “fueled by next-gen technology”
    Look at those buzzwords

  • Ace

    Shitty music but great trailer.

  • Yan Zhao

Awesome trailer accompanied by a shitty song.

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

    I’m so ready for this

  • Mir Teiwaz

I didn’t see anything that looked like gameplay, so this trailer doesn’t really do anything for me.

  • DragKudo

This looks awesome, I enjoyed the music it went well with the fight

Rap/hip hop is the best music to use for fighting games. well any kind of music is.

    • Ninjagoon

I don’t understand how people think rap isn’t a valid form of music. This was a great trailer and good music choice. I don’t even like Wiz Khalifa and I thought this was pretty cool.

  • Bob Slim

For those who dont like hip hop kick rocks.
    cant wait for this

  • Tom

I like what I see but I don’t like what I hear. I still want to get the Sub Zero adventure game, MK4 for the PS1 and the latest MK that came after vs DC universe and Shaolin Monks, though…

  • Chee Yang

If the gameplay is this fluid then I might get it. The animation always felt “too choppy” in other NetherRealm games.

  • Loli Summoner

FUCK EM UP SUB-ZERO! ( sub zero getting his ass kicked)

  • ndjn3979

    I am pleased.

  • leingod

Don’t worry too much about the music. NRS used “Another way to die” by Disturbed on their MK9 trailers and it didn’t appear in the actual game.

Oh, and why does Sub Zero always lose? Scorpion losing would’ve been nice, for a change.

Still! Can’t wait for actual gameplay on E3!!

    • Nice Boat Quatro

It’s because Scorpion is the creator’s pet.

      • leingod

Yeah, I guess. If Scorpion had lost it would’ve upped the shock factor, though.

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Mortal Kombat always felt slow to me compared to the many other fighting games out there. It always felt like you’d just stand there for a while after attacking.
I’ll keep an eye on it but if it doesn’t get more fluid/faster than I’ll just pass it.

  • subsamuel01

Love the new looks, hopefully that’s in-engine, can’t wait to see more at E3.

  • Gyro Zeppeli

“fueled by next-gen technology” “released on PS3 and 360”

  • Quan Chi

Breaks bones and organs. Still keeps fighting normally……
What stops them from getting back up after a fatality then? Why fear death or earthrealm takeover then?

Needs moar reduced speed, disabled jumping, disabled moves, or disabled buttons that correspond to the injuries to make this more believable and strategical and alot less silly.

  • Anko Is Furious (King T.G.P)

Should’ve used something other than a Wiz Khalifa song for the trailer lol.. There’s better artists out there X.X.

  • MrJechgo

Now… how are they gonna deal with the diminished roster?

    • Skode

Retcon the story of last time i presume because Sub Zero was killed off last time in both human form then Cyborg form as well in the story and yet here he is the trailer… well to get killed off again at least haha

  • brian

Why not wait to announce this at E3?

  • Maria Francisca Mena

When I saw the trailer I haven’t the information that was gonna be for PS3 too, I was super sad. Now everything is good

  • Ultimaniacx4

I just hope the pc version isn’t as horrible as the last one. Those cutscenes felt like I was watching pre recorded video running on an N64….Such a waste of money….

  • Rohan Viajar

Everybody is critiquing the music while I feel like we need to look at the actual trailer.

As far as I am concerned this trailer, it didn’t give me jack squat about how the graphics are gonna look like

(gameplay will be.. well it’s MK soo yeah. I don’t think it will deviate too much to what it always has been. I mean we learn about possible cool stuff like more environment attacks and weapons coming back)

  • Victor Wesker

Hope Goro will be fully playable in any game modes.

  • Ronldbx6

Why the hell does sub-zero always loose against scorpion?

  • Ronldbx6

The beat was sick! I enjoyed the vibe it gave the trailer. Something different..

  • Göran Isacson

Am I a bad person for laughing out loud at the ending and going “WHO WON? WHO’S NEXT? EPIIIIC RAP BATTLES OF HISTORY”? I think I may be.

At any rate- looks like we’re getting weapons back! Neat.
