More Details On Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s Rogue And Ninja

Square Enix showed a first look at Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborns upcoming new class and job with the Rogue and Ninja during their special edition of Letter from the Producer during last week’s E3. Famitsu shares a few extra details, including another look at the reveal trailer.

The Japanese name for the Rogue is 双剣士 and roughly translates to “Dual Fencer”. They’re based off a group of people who were once known as “Thieves” but after getting accustomed to the battlefield, they’ve established themselves as the Dual Fencers, or Rogue.

 

Unlike the dual-wielders of Final Fantasy XI, Rogues will equip their weapons similarly to the Monks, so one weapon will act as a set of two blades. Once they turn into Ninjas as the advanced job, they’ll still use poison as part of their main skills, to go with Ninja Seals. There are different types of Seals, which can be mixed for various effects, as previously reported.

 

In order to keep up with other DPS (Damage Per Second) characters, Ninjas will need to use their Seals and poison attacks to the fullest to be most effective.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s patch 2.3 launches on July 8, 2014. Meanwhile, the Rogue and Ninja will become available on patch 2.4, prior to the game’s first expansion.

 

Food for Thought:

 

1. Naoki Yoshida previously mentioned that they’re looking to release the first expansion to the game within two years of launch, and it’ll be as big as the base game itself. With its first year anniversary coming this August, that gives them about a little over a year to work on it.

 

2. Final Fantasy XI featured two to three new jobs per expansion. If that ends up being the case for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which jobs/classes would you like to see for its first expansion?

        You mean Magic -> Melee -> Ranged. This is actully the second set of Job/Classes added. Arcainst > Summoner/Scholar was the first.

    Very excited to see the new jobs being added. As to what I would like to see in the expansion. I would love to see the Red Mage class added. However, I would also be fine with just seeing a massive amount of new content and an increased level cap.

    it’s been said by yoshi that the plans to have one new tank (Samurai maybe) and a new healer (don’t have a guess for this one) in the expansion. I would love to see the dancer class

    Dark Knight is the one I’d love to see, but I’m wondering how they’d implement such a class into XIV.

        Mainly referring to the fact that some of the classes already have some similar abilities to what one would use. So this would be a decently different take on Dark Knight in general.

      Marauder already has the blood-letting powers associated with Dark Knight, I could see it as another branch of Marauder

      Not happening. Ninja was never ment to be a tank in XI either. The saff was just too afraid to take the nerf-bat to it.

    Currently a Dragoon, but would love to see the Samurai class in the game come expansion time =^_^=

    Evade and counter tank like the Swordsmaster from Bravely Default.

      Ninja is not a tank. I believe the staff in charge of XIV agrees with the opinion that XI Ninjas shouldn’t have been allowed to evovle in the way players took them

          Sorry, I jumped to conclousions.

          Players played Ninja as a dodge tank in XI when it wasn’t ment for it. Instead of nerfing it SE went “Sure why not” despite every other FF game making Ninjas basically “Thieves with magic” and many XI turned XIV players want the dodge tank instead of the DPS class we’re getting.

            I know, I played FFXI and disliked that too. I was responding to the second question in the article.

    I might actually give FFXIV another shot when they implement this. Always liked rogues/ninjas the most and was disappointed when I moved from FFXI to find they didn’t have an equivalent class.

        Yeah, when I first tried out FFXIV (after its many many changes) I played as a pugilist. It was fun, but something about it didn’t feel right. I kept wanting my thief or ninja from FFXI.

        Of course, I expect there’s going to be a lot of differences in how rogue and ninja play versus FFXI, but as long as it remains a quick class, it’ll probably be my jam.

      I’m hoping that with the announcement of the Rogue, that we will get a tank and healer class to go with it. Make it a new row of job classes, one per role.

    Red Mage, first and foremost. It’s the only absentee remaining from the original game. Could maybe wield Spellblades with weapon enchants and use Dualcast in a hybrid attack/support role.

    Beyond that, Dark Knight seems like a no-brainer. Greatswords or scythes, perhaps. Tank, of course. Or, maybe branch it off from Marauder and use axes… but, eh.

    With Ninja and Dragoon I’ve already got my favorite FF jobs, so it’s all gravy after that.

    “damage per second characters” sound weird. It should be DD (damage dealer) instead of DPS.

      Actually, I’ve seen people refer to ‘em as DPS in XIV more, even Naoki Yoshida himself. DD was more frequently used back in XI.

      Yeah, I agree. It’s thanks to WoW that we’re stuck with that ugly term.

    As for classes i’d like to see….Dual-Weilder and Musketeer.

      Isn’t the Rogue essentially that? They class them as Dual-fencers so I guess according to SQ that’s the dual-wielding right there.

    I’d love to see Red Mage and Elementalist…but tbh these are a bit weird to include in a game like this…Especially elementalist which would probs act the same as a Black Mage… I just don’t really like the back mages’ style :p

    Meh, I don’t see this job playing any different from MNK. Keep up dots like poison and seals to maximize damage, etc etc. Like every other dps class.

    This only causes problems for DF since everyone will be running Rogue/Ninja.

    I’ll wait for the expansion.

    I’m happy they’re adding more DPS style class but I want to see more tank style like geomancer, dark knight, samurai or templar
