Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate’s Phase-4 Looks Very Different From Kasumi

Phase-4 was released as a downloadable character for Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate this week, and Team Ninja have released a combo video for the character, along with a few tips and tricks from director Yohei Shimbori. You can read his notes below.

Phase 4 has a very unique play style, so we’ve put together this combo video to give you a feel for how to use her. Her basic concept is to fade into a black mist to move around as she steals bits of damage, but there are a few things you need to know before you can start using her like a pro.

One of the biggest keys to Phase 4 is her kick from Chifu, the stance she enters after 7K, 4K, 3P, and other moves. This move hits twice in rapid succession, so it takes a lot of training to get the timing right for the P+K on the first hit. Other moves have a longer input window than Chifu K, so it may be good to practice with those first.

Her Tenfu stance, on the other hand, is often used to finish up a combo. She can enter it from Chifu K, 66K, 6PK, 8K, and other moves. The three types of moves she can use from Tenfu are H+P (an air throw), P (which keeps juggles going), and K (which keeps her in Tenfu after it hits), so use these appropriately to maximize damage.

These special movements can also be used in Critical Combos. In particular, Chifu P+K is a Critical Burst move, so you can combine this with other moves to shake up your opponent. Or if your opponent is familiar with Phase 4’s strategies, you can avoid these and use something like a throw instead to “throw” them off!

The combos shown here are only a few examples of what Phase 4 can do. They’re not necessarily her highest damage combos, nor are they guaranteed in every situation. Finding the best combo for your opponent’s weight, on uneven terrain, against walls and ceilings, and other fight conditions is a huge part of the fun. I hope you’ll use this video as a basis to experiment and look into her other combos.

Although visually a clone of Kasumi, don’t make the mistake of assuming Phase 4 plays the same – her combos and overall fighting style set her miles apart.

Thanks for watching, and see you in Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate!

The next new character headed to Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate as downloadable character is Nyotengu. A release date for her has not been announced yet.

  • KingGunblader

So she’s kind of like USIV‘s Decapre then? (ie. is a clone of an existing character with a unique moveset)

    • You guys act like Decapre started the trend.

      • KingGunblader

I’m fully aware she didn’t. I was just citing a recent example.

      • Superior Spider-Man

Decapre was the only one to be made a fuss about though, lol. I thought nothing when they announced her.

        • Vesperion

People only hated so hard on her because Street Fighter is more mainstream

          • MasterScrub

Nah, the only reason people hated on her was because Capcom announced the other characters in Ultra about 6 months before her, and dropping clues about her every now and then. If they had announced her at the same time, no one would have whined as much.

          • Vesperion

As long as Capcom is involved there will always be hate

          • ChaosDT08

Then Ono said before her reveal that people gonna be mad when they see who it is

      • powerlessbump

People don’t like Decapre because Ono was touting her about as the coolest thing since a boxer that drinks tea with his gloves still on.

    • Anko Is Furious (King T.G.P)

      Using your own logic lol..

“Decapre is like DoA5U Alpha 152, Soul Calibur’s Nightmare or quite possibly any of the other character in games that have been doing it for quite some time then? (ie. is a clone of an existing character with a unique moveset)”

      • KingGunblader

EDIT: Ignore this one, relevant reply below.

  • Godmars

Is this a F2P DL with micro, or a full, physical game with costume micro?

    • Superior Spider-Man

both. There is a Ultimate Dead or Alive V Core that is available for download for the PS3. With this you get 5-6 free characters and you you can buy more characters you want to use. The physical or full download version you get all characters, except Marie Rose and Phase-4; who are dlc character. There are also costume dlc for both versions.

  • fairysun

I still want Jann Lee phase 4.
Fade into black mist, teleporting and doing Dragon Kick !!

  • sakanaとkoeda

She kinda reminds me of the idol and the vanishing girl from Mekaku City Actors. Except “premium time” with her would amount to…death. I probably wouldn’t mind though :)

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

no…she looks like Kasumi with boss status powers, redder hair and bigger bust (−_−;)

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Yes, but the bust is bigger~.

    • doubleO7

I’m pretty sure they reused the exact same model…

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

It is but with bigger boobs

        • doubleO7

I’m not seeing a difference. Also, according to TN’s official measurements (yes, TN does come up with those), they have the exact same bust size. So, make of that what you will.

    • TheBlackRabbit

Didn’t you know…as her power increases so do her tits :D

    • Skode

She has the same bust size, she is just clearly showing more of a tendency to flash the flesh than than her counterpart would. More skin on show = more the impression she is bustier.

  • Göran Isacson

Kinda curious- is this Phase 4 the same clone that goes around thinking it’s Kasumi in DOA5’s story mode, or is it the shiny, translucent one that’s suddenly gotten a lot more solid?

    • Skode

Phase 4 is neither i believe. The clone which thinks she is Kasumi is busy chasing after Donovan now she helped destroy Alpha 152 (the shiny one). Phase 4 is the version Bayman is chasing and is the one which wiped out his squad and left him with permanent scarring from his encounter with her in the games prologue.

      • Göran Isacson

That was… two different clones? I thought the clone that Bayman hunted was the one who thought she was Kasumi.

        • EinMugenTenshin

It was, because Bayman didn’t really know who attacked him. The one they killed in DoA5 was the one who thought she was Kasumi, which helped kill Alpha -152 before her. However, this one (Phase-4) seem to be the newest creation from Kasumi’s ninja DNA by M.I.S.T., and seem to be more aware of her situation than the previous clones. If the little lore given out about her (that I’ve overheard) is correct, then Phase-4 is basically aware and has accepted her fate (as a weapon). Even so the situation “saddens her”, making it likely she is more mentally capable than the previous clones (as she actually has the brains to be sad about the situation).

          • Göran Isacson

Man, had to hit up the wiki to get some clarity here. So Phase-4 is an entirely new clone, Alpha 154 was the shiny, translucent one that seemed to able to change form in DOA5, and the clone that thought she was Kasumi and got killed just ’cause is apparently just called “False Kasumi”.

            Fighting games, everyone!

  • Hector Velar

plays different, looks exactly the same to me.

    • David García Abril

Because we all know that looks are more important than the move set in a fighting game…

      • Hector Velar

with most games…yes, but with this one is the exception, this game is all about plot and eye candy ;)

But don’t take it on me, I’m just correcting the statement being made, “looks very different from Kasumi” rather than “plays very different from Kasumi” put them both on bikini and they are identical. I been supporting this game very hard and defended it many times when it was deserving, but I know when to say no.

  • David García Abril

So, she’s supposed to be DOA’s resident Evil Ryu?

  • Kornelious

Well i just bought the Phase-4 + Costume pack gor 12$…….I have little to no regrets! XD
