Patch 2.3 for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be released tomorrow, July 8th. Prior to its release, Square Enix have shared a set of preliminary patch notes that outline the major content updates you can expect to see included.

The patch notes cover playable content such as quests and features, battle system updates, item updates, and system updates. You can find the patch notes here.

  • Wait what

The full patch notes aren’t out yet, so this isn’t actually ALL the new content. Just most of it.

    • It’s actually probably all the *content*, since content won’t be greenlit in the few days between the prelim notes and the proper patch launch. It’s possible there will be extra bugfixes and whatnot, though!

  • This patch is comically massive. If you haven’t yet started playing, it’s actually debatable as to whether or not you’d be able to *see* all the content on offer as of 2.3 within the free month (assuming you don’t play extremely hardcore). If SE can keep this pace and level of content addition up, XIV has a bright future ahead of it.

Really looking forward to Fanfest in October now.

I’d say 2.2 was about the same size, and the only thing there that an average player couldn’t take on immediately was the Second Coil of Bahamut. 2.3 won’t have anything nearly as hard, and I expect most of the active playerbase to storm through the new content well before the July is over.

It might have longer appeal if Frontline turns out to be popular, though. I, for one, would love an actual PvP alternative to dungeon grinding. PvP in Wolf’s Den was horrible, but it seems the devs took a lesson from that debacle.

      • I was actually talking about a *fresh* player, starting from scratch and working their way through all the available content, including all three patches. I think that might be a struggle within the free month, unless you play in a fairly “hardcore” manner.

Veteran players will certainly experience the majority of what this patch has to offer by the end of July, to be sure. I do have hope for Frontline, though, it certainly looks fun if nothing else!

I assume Second Coil of Bahamut Savage mode will be stronger than Second Coil of Bahamut. Seems logical.

They need to go back to the main game and delete out the hours of forgettable fetch&kill quest filler. Especially at the end, so terrible.

    • Black Heaven

I am really getting intrigued to get back to XIV now, but it’s quite intimidating if I haven’t even finished the vanilla content yet. (am not even Lv50) But it really does look promising.

When is this “free month” you mention?

  • Zalin

I have tried to get into this game but have failed a few times, it’s not a bad game it’s really good, just it’s really hard for me to get into a new mmo now days. I really enjoy ranged dps if I where to go back to this game what range dps class is considered over-powered atm?

    • Monterossa

all classes seem to be equal now but summoners/black mages are good for killing group of monsters but for single enemy (boss), not so much differences.

      • nekolife

I play as BLM and will enjoy the buff, but honestly I didn’t consider it a problem being better at AOE damage. All jobs don’t have to be equally good for all situations.

        • Trevor Nicolaysen

Most good BLMs seem to out damage most other classes consistently from what I’ve seen. They’re just a little harder to tank for, but I’d take a full party of good BLMs over any other DPS in any dungeon I’ve done. I plan to make BLM my third at 50 and first DPS at 50.

          • Yuri Devia

Not a problem when you aren’t on end-game but on Second Coil of Bahamut it hurts to be BLM. Almost everyone drops to 3º-4º place on dps cause they need to do a lot of mechanics, killing the cast of most skills.

          • Trevor Nicolaysen

That makes sense. I get it now. Thanks for informing me!

          • nekolife

Yeah, having to move frequently does really kill BLM dps. On Titan EX I feel like a DPS liability having to cancel spells dodging so often. (At least everybody loves me for the AOE limit break, right? right?! -_-)

As someone thats currently got all released class to 50 and play them all regularly id say that first of Bard is ranged dps with support songs. Now bard is considered more easy to get to grips and master, if you mess your rotation up on a bard it doesnt matter really. Since its fixable and the songs are very good Mana Regen for Mages as well as Foe Requim a song that ups the dps of your partys BLMs and SMNs. Bards are a necessity at end game you will never not be wanted ^^ Also as a bard your not rooted on spot to use your skills.

Summoners are a pet class there ranged DPS comes from there DoTs and their Pets. Gardua is a spell caster, Titan a tank and Ifrit a melee dmg pet. Summoners can be overlooked sometimes when compared to BLM number wise. But what they dont make up for in the BLMs high numbers they do just over time. Using the right pet is a must aswell. However you do have some of your own pure damage spells as well. Also summoner will be getting new pets in a patch or expansion Levi and Ramuh.

Black Mages are great and fun. Therr spells are some of the more powerful DPS . You just make the tank work cause its easy to pull aggro if the tank isnt paying full attention. Its one of there harder jobs to get right ^^

wow thanks guys! Didn’t expect such a huge reply with so much info I appreciate it.

  • Kornelious

……Should really jump back into the game (I say for the fifth time :P)

    • Tinye

I keep telling myself this and then I look at my backlog and I say… maybe after

      • Crimson_Cloud

I have around four more titles unpacked, waiting to be played, aside from FF XIV. Damn, free time is always there where you don’t need it…

        • Tinye

haha so true! I just replayed FF1 because.. well why not, when I have all these other games to play.

          • Crimson_Cloud

I hear you, some classics just have to be replayed no matter if the new titles that are collecting dust. Like my obligatory every year playthrough of Suikoden II. My heart just won’t let go XD

      • I know how you fell

    • AndyLC

You can always wait for NINJA to be released, then you can play while the servers are flooded with too many DPS’s

  • I still need to renew my subscription.
