Palutena Has Some Very Far-Reaching Attacks In Super Smash Bros.

By Ishaan . July 8, 2014 . 11:31am

At E3, Nintendo revealed Palutena as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Last night on Miiverse, director Masahiro Sakurai showed off her Smash Attack (above) and another one of her moves, emphasizing her range and reach.

Sakurai posted the screenshot above, stating: “I talked about an attack with a far reach in yesterday’s post, but it didn’t compare to Palutena’s up smash attack! No joke, it reaches really far. It reached so far in this shot that even the rocketbarrels got blown up.”

He added, alongside a second screenshot: “That said, if we’re talking just about range, even that can’t beat Palutena’s power, Heavenly Light. It has quite a damage field. However, this is a no-flinch attack, which means the opponents won’t react to the damage!”

Super Smash Bros. is in development for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

O Powerful Goddess of Light (and Trolling)!

  • Desk

  • Diddy Kong didn’t stand a chance.

I imagine she’ll be a slower character to compensate for her long reaching attacks.

    • HarakiriKami

      She’s fast as shit actually

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Perhaps she’ll be a one-time character in this game and no other after but hopefully she’ll be fun both gameplay-wise and character-wise.

  • Christopher C

    Goddesses are OP

  • Code Name Crono

I find her hypnotic moves to be her most powerful. Just CANNOT stop watching dem .gifs of her roster reveal.

  • 하세요

I bet she’ll have some insane lag though, so she may get punished if it gets teched-blocked/whiffs. On paper this looks ridiculous, but stuff like this in the end will actually backfire, much like how everyone thought Little Mac was going to be ridiculous.

    • mojack411

Thank you someone with good sense! Everyone has been saying she’s going to be the most OP character but no one has actually gotten to play as her yet. It’s all on paper and I can’t imagine Sakurai giving a blatant advantage like that reach without some other drawbacks.

    • Linhua

… I agree with all of this… but can you tell me what happened with Little Mac…?

… i’m still under the impression he is going to be just as vicious as Palutena.

… did someone mention or did they say something about his weaknesses…?

… I must have missed this.

      • 하세요

From what I’ve heard and seen, his extremely piss poor recovery makes him really weak. On a walk-off stage, he’ll be very strong, but people never realized how bad a horrible recovery would actually play out in person.

Especially in the competitive scene, where recovery is a huge factor in survival. He’s still strong and it is early to say whether or not he’ll be dominating, but many assumed he’d be a god because of his OHKO Uppercut, which seems to be pretty easily avoidable.

  • rezie

Instant reminder of Ultimecia’s Apocalypse in Dissidia!

  • ZEROthefirst

Hopefully she doesn’t turn out to be as broken as she looks, other-wise I can see her being banned from tourneys and such like Meta Knight. Not that I like either of those 2, but I know plenty of people that don’t want Palutena to turn out the same way because Sakurai’s putting more effort into characters from his own franchise again.

    • HarakiriKami

      Mii’s are probably broken too.

      So is Rosalina

(Watches tournament, little mac dies in third round)

      • ZEROthefirst

Mii Fighter’s can’t be used online with randoms because of the fact that they have no standard default attacks so they’ll more than likely be banned from tourneys unless they set a specific attack set for tourney use only. Rosalina felt kind of sluggish and Little Mac I have no doubt will be OP on the ground, but in the air he’s almost useless so that one’s going to be easy to get around as long as you can get him into the air.

      • k.b.a.

Oh the items random stages kerfuffle. If that’s a tourney than so is dbz freiza saga

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Well…she came to bring a little divine intervention ;) – I mean that pic!

Seriously, for tournaments, I agree that with these descriptive attacks she would have to be banned – unless they balance her out in some way diminishing other aspects of her arsenal.

    • Prinnydoom

Wouldn’t mind getting hit by that. Not one bit.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Yes…I wish I was in the Hylian’s place about to get some divine intervention :)

      • Aaron K Stone

If only she had the Peach bomber move. Drools…

    • LastFootnote

Dude, talking about characters being banned before the game is even out is pretty silly.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I hope you say that to everyone else bringing it up. ;)

I’m sure they will balance her out.

    • LightZero

She can hit me with that move any time. *continues to stare at picture*

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

        She definitely has appealing maneuverability.

      • AuraGuyChris

        Sorry. That is Peach’s thing…literally.

    • Kornelious

      ….Yes….. O_O

  • Kornelious

Between the graceful and witty Palutena and the the sexy and deadly new Zero Suit Samus this game has made up for the few females in this game <3

    • Noor Mahmoud

Currently announced there are 17 males, 8 females, and 8 androgynous characters. Nintendo is pretty diverse as it is so far.

      • Kornelious

Hey, it’s not called being androgynous, it’s called being FABULOUS! XD

  • Snorlaxation

Powerful attacks but, at least with that Heavenly Light, no flinching. It’s a good way to counteract her strength. I’m loving this game more and more with every new article. They really have been doing everything they can to make this Smash Bros. their ‘best.’

  • Guest

Great, so another broken character like Meta Knight. Not coincidentally, another character from a series Sakurai worked on.

    Keep on showing that favoritism.

    • Arrei

You don’t even know how she plays yet. Oftentimes, moves with long reach end up being extremely punishable if they fail, and the second one being non-flinching means using it at the wrong time could easily prove fatal. Also, her smash has insane vertical reach, but look at how it leaves so much area around her exposed, unlike many other smashes that will attack in an arc or multiple directions.

There’s so much we don’t know about her like her wind-up time, recovery time, area coverage, weight, versatility, and so forth and you’re already singing the favoritism song?

      • k.b.a.

Lol nah silly she broken. You got eyes stop lying to yourself

    • Aaron K Stone

So you’ve played it and know it’s broken?

    • Zero_Destiny

      Sakurai and favoritism doesn’t really go well together (well unless you’re talking about his pet cat, then yes, he loves the hell outta it :P). But if there’s one thing that man is, it’s humble. ^^;;

Dude, wanted to put in Dedede a long time ago but held off feeling that it was unfair, by the time he did finally make it in, the cast has grown significantly to allow a bit more leeway for an extra character or two from Kirby.

If anything all it shows is just his attention to detail since most of those moves match up to the work he and Team Sora did on Uprising, and anyone who did a lot of multi in the game should be familiar with all of it. lol

      • Sentinel

Okay, I overblew that one a bit. I don’t dislike him or anything, and I’m aware of that fact with King Dedede. It’s just that it does show a bit when characters he’s worked closely with seem to overall play better than others.

Then again, Kirby and Pit were two of my better characters in Brawl, so this is probably very hypocritical of me. :)

Anyway, considering Palutena is a goddess, I just hope that extra attention is given to not make her OP.

    • raymk

Hmm, i recognize your name from gamefaqs. This post is similar as well. Keep showing that ignorance though, i wont stop you.

  • Brimfyre

Have you ever noticed Palutena and Sakurai have the same hairstyle in the front?

  • MrJechgo

In the trailer, she showed like 12 attacks. Pretty sure some of them are part of the customization aspect, where you can have a selection of 4 specials among a bunch.

  • subsamuel01

Really hope they announce a release date for the Wii U version, probably my most anticipated game of the year.

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

I can’t wait. Between this, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad…Wii U will be giving many hours and hours of enjoyment this year.

    • AuraGuyChris

      Japan – December 24th

      Everywhere Else – March 9

      • keithmaxx

That’ll be a big mistake, if true. Sales for the holidays is big time in the West, so the reverse is a more probable one.

        • AuraGuyChris

A big mistake was Japan getting the 3DS version 20 days earlier than the rest of the world, and Sakurai disliked how his beloved (but bland) SSE mode got spoiled by people uploading videos to Youtube.

True, Europe will get the game the same day as North Americans, but why the hell couldn’t they keep Japan the same day too? Is it because there’s Japanese stuff in the game that needs to be omitted for the outside audience? Or is it because Japan will lack more language options?

  • Dkmariolink

I can show Palutena a “far reaching” attack…….

  • SlickRoach

    Dat range had me like…

Well, at least I know who’s being banned amongst my friends now.

  • Armageddon

I think she will be OP. Just saying.

  • Lan

I wonder if I should drop Zelda for her then.

  • Tonton Ramos

  • Kayriss Wins

Literally god-tier, but the fact that it doesn’t cause any hit stun balances it out I guess.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

can you say broken? she is a goddess

  • Ban The Jackass

In Wii U screenshots, she always looked like this >>> (-_-)
Maybe cos I played Kid Icarus and she is more expressive in that game.

  • Armageddon

How about they add bayonetta XD(joking).
