An Update On How Unsung Story Is Coming Along

By Ishaan . August 1, 2014 . 4:00pm

Playdek have shared an update on the ongoing development of Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, the crowdfunded strategy RPG being developed by them in collaboration with Tactics Ogre creator Yasumi Matsuno.

Details of the game’s story and character development have been hammered out over the past several months by Playdek and Matsuno. The first three full scenarios from the game are currently “completely mapped out with their component stages”.

On the character design front, Akihiko Yoshida (Bravely Default) will be focusing on the development of key characters from the main story. The first art pieces from Yoshida are expected in early Fall. Meanwhile, additional concept art to define the rest of the game’s world is also in the works.

On the music front, composer Hitoshi Sakimoto and his team are “reviewing the storyline and the current scenarios” in preparation for composing the game’s music.

Finally, development on the game’s battle system has been “moving forward,” specifically with regards to the triangle/hex system, battle actions, character action turns and movement. Some level design work has been completed and playable scenarios are presently being built within the battle system.

Playdek have also made some changes to their marketing plans. The focus of the Unsung Story brand has shifted from the card game to the strategy RPG instead, and the RPG will be released first with the prequel card game coming afterwards. The reason for this decision is that the RPG helps convey the tone of the world better, which Playdek want to have in place for the card game’s late Summer 2015 release.

  • Still looking forward to whatever Yasumi Matsuno is involved in.

Wait a second they managed to get Akihiko Yoshida and Hitoshi Sakimoto for this game too?!?!? I thought it was just Yasumi Matusno but now they’ve got the other two important members of the Tactics Ogre/FF Tactics team! I was kind of weary when I first heard about this game since Matsuno was only supervising the project but now I can’t help but get excited.

I’m totally taking credit for Yoshida, by the way. I was the first person in the Kickstarter comments to say it’d be great if Yoshida got involved, and not long after, they started talking about bringing him in. xP

Akihiko Yoshida seals the deal for me. I’m getting this game when it comes out >_<

Took them long enough to finally (even if still off-handedly) acknowledge that the “triangle” grid gimmick really did just end up with same thing as a hex grid.

  • new_tradition

Nice to hear they want to put focus more on the actual sRPG game. That’s the one that was specifically crowd funded, right? I’d imagine backers might be annoyed if the card game got priority while they still keep waiting for the game.

When I saw that armor in the thumbnail, all I can think of is berserk….

kinda bummed that it couldn’t make its console goals, though hopefully they are willing to port it eventually. Nothing stopping me from getting it on PC.

  • EggmaniMN

They really just need to drop the card game idea. It benefits no one and they aren’t going to penetrate that market. I applaud the idea but it’s too big for them to pull off in one shot like this. Just concentrate on the game as that’s what everyone wants.

    • Souffrir

Except Playdek makes card games. It’s almost exclusively what they’ve done up to this point.

And I’m pretty sure the original idea for this game was a card game first, an RPG second. I think just how far this took off after Matsuno was announced as being involved actually kinda took Playdek by surprise.

  • Hope this still has a chance for a console release. I want to play it but I really don’t use my iPhone for gaming anymore.

Damn! That thumbnail looked like Valkyrie Profile to me.

    • Shane Guidaboni

      I miss that series.

  • Let’s hope and wait.

  • Wonder what system this will be on. It may end up a sleeper hit like Project Phoenix and Soul Saga if they play their cards right.

More games that I forgot about, because there are too many damn Kickstarters.

      • True. When I hear about a game, I kick a sticky note of it with the date or name. That way I remind myself to look up on it every month or two.
