Digimon All-Star Rumble Is Like Power Stone With Agumon

By Spencer . August 6, 2014 . 6:00pm

Siliconera had a chance to play an early build of Digimon All-Star Rumble on PlayStation 3 with four playable characters – Agumon, Gabumon, Biyomon, and Tentomon. Altogether, Digimon All-Star Rumble has twelve different Digimon that can Digivolve into different forms. If you count those, there are 32 Digimon spanning the entire series.

Digimon All-Star Rumble supports up to four players in a battle. I tried a three player fight with Agumon and two CPUs to start. Agumon can punch with his little fists, but his real power comes out when he transforms into Greymon. You can Digi-volve if you pick up an item that pops up on screen. I also grabbed a wind item that pushed Gabumon away. Whenever a character Digi-vovles they grow in size, immediately get a max HP boost, and, at least in Agumon’s case, a long range attack that reaches the other side of the arena.

The CPU controlled fighters didn’t even try to fight back–they’re programmed to run in circles until you turn back to your original form.

Players can choose different battle modes Point, Survival, Medal (when an enemy gets KOed they drop a medal which gives you a point, it’s possible to steal medals), Bomb (characters have bombs on their back that detonate and can KO other characters), Flag Battle (essentially capture the flag), and Damage Race.

While Digimon All-Star Rumble feels like it’s designed to be a multiplayer game, there is a story mode to play through. The game is set entirely in the Digital World. Why are characters fighting? Well, they still need to Digi-volve so they create the first ever Digimon Battle Tournament. Players will be able to unlock additional Digimon by going through story mode.

I got to try a little bit of this too, which puts players in a 3D world as a Digimon. You get to choose who you play as and I picked Tentomon this time. The forest area I was in had some obstacles to jump on, switches to press, and battles with smaller enemies like Neemon who are basically there to charge your Digi-volve meter. You can collect coins in this mode which can be used to buy DigiCards that give you different fusion forms. Biyomon was waiting as a boss at the end and if this Digimon wasn’t already unlocked defeating Biyomon would’ve unlocked the character for versus mode.

Digimon All-Star Rumble is entirely dubbed in English. A Bandai Namco representative said it was actually developed with the West in mind and so far the game has not been announced for Japan. Prope, the studio run by Yuji Naka and developer of Digimon Adventure, is developing the game.

Digimon All-Star Rumble is slated for release on November 11 for PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America.

hmm. I wonder about how solid if at all this game will be. I mean being a fighting game fan & Digimon fan has me skeptical either way.

    • Just Tim

I have previously witnessed the American FGC and they collectively dismiss any non-Marvel games as “child’s play”; case in point: Tatsunoko VS Capcom.

Never mind Yipes’ rant, “F*** ARCANA HEART!”, to the point his “MAHVEL BAYBEE!” meme gets parodied into “MAHVEL ZOMBIZ BAYBEE!” every Halloween.

  • Sounds like this game is shaping up nicely. The description of this being akin to “Power Stone” makes me interested more, as I played said Capcom game before in Dreamcast.

  • Just Tim

I sincerely hope this release becomes successful in the West, to the point Namco Bandai, especially Katsuhiro Harada, grant the Digimon franchise blessings to make an arcade Digimon fighting game in style and game engine of Tekken.

  • Raziel Kõbe

Power Stone, I remember play in Playstation Portable. Sounds nice ;)

  • Powestone? That sounds good to me having played that game back in the day also I hear Agumon digivolve to Greymon so does it mean that they will slowly work their way to Mega or just jump to Mega on the spot?

    • Byron Kerrison II

It sounds like the same mechanics they used in Rumble Arena 2, I think. You smack your opponent to not only deplete their HP Bar but get energy to Digivolve into more powerful forms.

      • I’m hoping that’s the case since I prefer it that way.

        • Jesse Torres

In terms of evolution, most of them go straight to Mega.

          • Oh I see oh well I’ll live. I watched a some gameplay trailer and saw that Agumon and Gabumon go straight to Mega. It’s still fine by me.

  • indra jaya

now thats weird… designed for west and no japan announcement release so far… this game looks good, but if I buy this please localize cyber sleuth too namco!

    • Kalis Konig

Hopefully they will localize Decode and CS. They have already taken note of how the petition has almost reached 50k! They are likely testing us like they did with Romance Dawn.

      • indra jaya

because of companies like XSEED and NIS I’m not worried about niche japanese games localization anymore, most of them will come. what makes me worried was this supposedly big company like NAMCO, SEGA and LEVEL 5 that was too afraid to reach the west. its depressing to look at them now.

        • Renaldi Saputra

But, hey, now Level5 has a bunch of localization project, even thoguh under Nintendo’s

  • Kalis Konig

Hmm The Adventure mode makes me forgive them for the 12 character thing. since this is a budget title I would welcome DLC charater packs even. WOuld be cool if we could get packs based on seasons:

    02: Hawkmon, Armadillomon, Wormmon
    Tamers: Terriermon, Renamon, Impmon
    Frontier: Flamon, Lucimon, Lopmon
    Savers: Gaogamon, Lalamon, Hawkmon
    Xros Wars: Ballistamon, Caronamon, Gumdramon

    • Cheesy04

If there’s a Lucemon DLC I’m surely buying that!

    • I welcome that idea but I was more keen on having each season starter be present in the game.

  • Namuro

I wonder if there’ll be any Japanese gamers spamming “please localize” on the Japanese sites. LOL

    • Vash bane

      lol what a twist
      (always wanted to post that)

    • subsamuel01

They get enough Digimon games and they barely buy them. It’s about time they release one out West.

      • Renaldi Saputra

        Japanese barely buy digimon games?
Then can you explain why Re:Digitize was a big success in Japan and even had become top 20 games of the year 2012?

  • Kornelious

November 11th? That’s pretty soon!….Is it getting a physical release?

    • Renaldi Saputra

      It is IIRC

  • Daniel Rossevelt

Day 1 buy, I’ll pre-order next week, hope this game does well.

  • Vash bane

interesting I have…the slightest idea what powersonte is but it does sound familiar. game looks interesting specially after seeing shoutmon there. but if its anything like the old rumble games but has a 3D field…then that’s just awesome lol

    • Ah, Power Stone 1 + 2 are wonderful games!

They were both fighting games by Capcom back in ’99 – 2002 or so, for arcades and Dreamcast. They completely reinvented how fighting games work, being fully 3D and all versus all the games that followed Street Fighter’s style being locked in 2D. You could run around and fight or interact with the environment; rolling over and pushing tables or chairs, or picking up things like barrels and throwing them. You could jump off of walls, swing around poles, and climb on the ceiling like monkey bars – it changed depending on the level. It was great!

Although the Power Stones themselves kinda sucked, because they basically unbalanced the game. Collect 3 of them and you just become super overpowered. Which led to chaos. It was fun in short bursts, but hard to play for long. It just gets too annoying. Everything just devolved into “whoever could first get the Power Stone”, so people didn’t fight that much in reality.

Power Stone 2 pushed the fighting even further into the background since it made all the stages these action packed, setpiece driven platforming stages that evolved into some crazy scenarios. For example, in one stage, you begin on these two boats. In a minute or so, the boat’s turrets activate, and you can take them over and shoot the other players. One boat sinks, forcing everyone to jump on the other one, and vice versa. Eventually, they crash into an iceberg and everybody has to get off there and continue the fight on the ice. That game was a blast :)

      They both were rad.

      PS2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WnSLQEq1Js

But yes, “Power Stone” in this case refers to Digimon being a Fully 3D Arena Fighter. Other games, like the old RAVE Master title on Gamecube, Kung Fu Chaos or Marvel Nemesis, also fall into that category. This new Digimon isn’t quite a Power Stone clone, but it certainly shares it’s base gameplay with that game versus any side scrolling fighter.

  • Dexward

    No Reapermon, no buy.

    • Jesse Torres

No buy, no future Digimon games.

    • Renaldi Saputra

Then no digimon games in english in the future

  • 12 seems like way too low a number, especially with the emphasis on the first season’s digimon. I mean, the number would be completely fine if they didn’t seem to have spent half of that on them, but…

  • Alestaos

Only buying this so numbers raise and hopefully Cyber Sluth and Decode will be localized. I may play it cause of Gatomon, i loved the first Rumble game for the PSONE, i think that had a bigger roster. Anyways i hope Renamon is a DLC character. Does anyone know the 12digis yet since Tamers doesnt seem to be represented..

  • Croix Zapp

reminds me of Digimon RUmble Arena!

    Good old days

  • Rafael Martines

Well I never watched the series in japanese… So I can play that without hurting my ears aND hope is full trophy support

  • subsamuel01

Even if this ends up being bad, buying it just so they bring more Digimon games over like Cyber Sleuth on the Vita.

    • AuraGuyChris

Otherwise, it will make them think their bad NA games are so great they don’t need to make an effort to bring Japanese games overseas by making more bad games with no effort put in them…

      • Spirit Macardi

Bandai Namco: Whoever wins, we lose.

    • Renaldi Saputra

Don’t worry the hype is still big for this

  • Jesse Torres

I will buy this game for
    1. Future game localizations
    2. Interested in having some casual fun

  • Spirit Macardi

I so hope they got Jeff Nimoy back to play Tentomon! The man’s been absent from the voice acting scene for a while, and I’d love for him to make a return.

Plus, he was the main man behind the localization of the original series. He wrote most of the dub script, and he knew enough about the Japanese language and culture to know appropriate replacements for certain concepts.

    • I am also intrigued what is Jeff’s comment or reaction regarding that Digimon Adventure anime sequel on Spring 2015, if he already caught wind of it.

    • He had behind the scenes roles too up until Xros where he was absent for some reason. AND IT SHOWS.

I really hope they do try and get the majority of the cast back, although I am curious to see how they handle Savers/DS if they get any rep. Will Agumon be a skin with a different evo line or a separate character from the original Adventure Agumon?

      • Spirit Macardi

I think it’d be hilarious if Guilmon met Savers Agumon and asked why he sounds like Takato x3

    • Hinataharem

I liked how he got his voice to waver while talking to mimic bug “buzzing”

  • Any confirmation on an online mode at least? A local multiplayer suite seems assured at this point, but with a small Japanese developer taking the reins here, i’m worried. Even though it’s developed with the West in mind, and therefore, absolutely should have a working online mode.

Power Stone-type fighting WITH an online mode? That kind of automatically makes this a winner :)

    • Just Tim

I hope it does have GGPO to make up for the inconsistent American lag, especially when most American ISPs have capped internet outside of NY and LA.

  • Armageddon

This reminds of Digimon Rumble Arena :D

    • probably cause this is a sequel of sorts

    • Renaldi Saputra

      It really is the successor

    • Armageddon

Tnx for the info, I never knew. :D

  • Roberto

    >Is Like Power Stone
    sold day one

  • Altin

All this news article made me want, is a new Power Stone…

  • Learii

1 question can you Digi-volve to first form, 2nd form then last form or you just Digi-volve to last form

for example Agumon 1st form Greymon 2nd form Metalgerymon last form Wargreymon

    • John Smith

      I believe that’s called Warp Digivolution in-universe.

      • Steven Higgins

Yeah it’s Warp Digivolution if you skip a level or two.

      • Learii

oh so there a stone where you can skip to the last form right?

  • Renaldi Saputra

    To greymon? Seriously?
All I saw in the trailer is agumon warp evolved directly into wargreymon

Anw I’m glad that we can see a bunch of features in the game

  • Gosuke

Only 12 eh? hmm. I remember from when I’m playing rumble arena on ps1, there were 10 original form, 2 fusion form and 2 more were blackwargreymon and reapermon and others just their final form. I think they should add more chracter but I still get this one though.

  • Welp, the title itself put me off the game already. I bought Power Stone Collection for the PSP expecting some fun times, but I simply couldn’t get into it, even though 3D fighters are my favorites.

Though if this game is any hint for a game like the GBA/WS to appear on something handheld, I won’t hesitate giving it a chance.

  • Abysswalker90

Digi-volve sounds like a car model.

  • Hexodious

    Looks great so far.

  • Renaldi Saputra
  • CedarMill

So, judging from the info above, I’d venture the default Digimon Roster is:

  • Steven Higgins

So is it 12 Digimon initially and THEN you unlock more or is it a total of 12 Digimon AFTER unlocking all of them?
I really hope its the first one.

  • Too bad, I didn’t really enjoy other Digimon fighters… But somehow I still wanna try this. When the price drops, maybe I’ll buy it… the new anime has made me excited and I want that awesome Vita game on the west, so maybe I’ll be buying this in the meantime.

    • TheBiggestDreamer

If you want the games on the Vita so badly then show your support and buy this game while sale performance actually matters.

  • Kuhile Brodeur

The first season is my absolute favorite by far, but I think it’s a little unfair that half the characters are from that season. (As far as I know: Agumon, Gabumon, Biyomon, Tentomon, Gomamon, and Gatomon.) I also know Veemon, Shoutmon, and that dog. Anyone know the other three? But I really wanna play as Impmon again. Doubt he’ll make it in though. Prolly not even as DLC.

    • I know, I really want to play as Impmon! On the GBA game he couldn’t evolve because the game was out before Beelzemon appeared on the anime. I was really dissappointed… I’d love to play as him.

      • Renaldi Saputra

Well, but the ver 1.5 was released on 2002 on japan. Beelzebumon had existed on that time

        • I wish they would have just waited and ported ver 1.5 to GBA instead. I have a copy of 1.5 for Wonderswan but there’s no easy way to play with friends. :(

  • Guest

    To… Greymon?

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery
    • Renaldi Saputra

      It’s said that there is
But not as playable character maybe

  • Snorlaxation

I like this, but really, there are two other digimon games I’d much rather have. The one based on Season 1 of the show, and the new one with that protagonist with the yellow hot pants

    • ShindoW

There;s still hope for those if this sells, well… kinda…

      • Renaldi Saputra

You gotta check the interview video
I think now Bamco is open to digimon
We just have to wait for further announcement and make this game successed

  • sd28

this game needs moar Daimon Masaru

    • Renaldi Saputra

      Very true

  • axess707

Weird how Dorulumon “digivolves” into Shoutmon X4 in the announcement trailer.

  • Hinataharem

I hope this has as good a soundtrack as Rumble Arena. Those were some nice tunes!

    • Renaldi Saputra

I prefer to the original Japanese “Digimon Tamers Battle Evolution”
But the english vers soundtrack isn’t that bad

      • Hinataharem

Hmmm I might have to check that out

        • Renaldi Saputra

All of those soundtrack are from the anime series
Here I give one of it
Digimon Tamers Battle Evolution Soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p8WqACNWik&list=PLB07BB15932521F9D

          • Hinataharem

            Ohh I like

          • Renaldi Saputra

it’s just one from 6 soundtracks used in vs mode in the japanese version
the anime song that were used are: Butter-fly, Brave Heart, Target, Break up, Slash!!, and EVO…
There are 7 to be exact, but I never found the last one on internet, you can only listen when you play the game (what I mentioned is the soundtrack when there are Gokumon/Reapermon vs Gokumon/Reapermon)

  • Rocket

Well, this game is obviously going to be terrible. Let’s not fool ourselves. But, I may still end up picking it up just so that they keep making Digimon games, and hopefully a work on a good Digimon World game. The last few DS games were pretty good, it would awesome if we could get a game like that on consoles.

    • Willie Taing

Did you watch the gameplay videos? It actually looks pretty cool

  • Digimon Ruble Fan!

I really hope they get the old Digmon Rumble Arena 1 & 2 to PS store as a PS Classic as well:) I pretty sure would buy this game as well, but it would be awesome to have the classic’s as well^^

Bandai Games would then earn some money on work that they had all ready done, and we would be able to play the classic’s as well as the new Digmon All Star Rumble:) Everybody wins! :D
