Yakuza Zero Takes Place In 1988 As A Direct Prequel To The First Game

Sega recently announced the next Yakuza game, titled Yakuza Zero, for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine provides a few more details. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

Yakuza Zero is set in December of 1988, and will take place in Tokyo’s fictional  Kamurocho and Osaka’s fictional Soutenburi districts. The magazine report also mentions that the Kamurocho will be cooler than ever.

The protagonist is a 20-year old Kazuma Kiryu, at a time when he was a youth that worked part-time as a debt collector for the Tojo Clan. The other protagonist is Goro Majima, when he was 24-years old and made a cabaret club the most popular in Soutenburi before it closed down.

While the report doesn’t get into specific details, it indicates that many characters from the first Yakuza game will appear in Yakuza Zero, and towards the end of the game, the story will also connect between the two titles.

Yakuza Zero is currently in development for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Best NPC in the entire Yakuza series as a main character….
It pains me so much that this game will never come west because Sega has given up on anything that’s not Sonic or Football Manager outside of Japan.

Kiryu rolls triple doubles at the end and goes straight to jail. The end.

  • TrueDefault

As much as I wanna find out what happens after Yakuza 5, this sounds pretty awesome!!

  • Namuro

And I was just saying not too long ago, that I hate seeing Kiryu getting old… Now, he’s back and younger than ever!

  • Randgriz

december is my birth month and 1988 is my birth year…

    • MiniTaurus

      Year of the dragon!

  • AkuLord3

We get to play as Majima?! AT LAST (besides Dead Souls…main series with FIST). The two badass of the series…DAMN IT SEGA!. Whatever i’ll import it, I don’t care if i won’t be able to understand much!

Edit: Be weird if we didn’t see a connection between the two games…like at especially 2 but cool to see what Majima was up to and whoever else who joins.

  • Kamen Rider Rayz

I really hope that Nishiki Akira would be in this game too! I am so freaking excited for this! :D

  • SupaPhly

    wait, so it’s shenmue?

    :P kidding

Thats awesome and good to see Goro Majima again, I always find him hilarious loved playing as him in Yakuza dead souls/of the end

  • Göran Isacson

Heh, kinda figured this when I saw the “Zero” undertitle. My mind went back to Resident Evil Zero, and lo and behold… wonder why the throwback, though. Run out of ideas with adult Kiryu? Or did they want to expand a little on his past?

  • Senpai

    Yakuza remastered collection when?

    • Makoto Itou

an HD remake for the first 2 games came out like 2 years ago for the PS3 and 1 year ago for the Wii U.

      • Oscar Ga.Le.

Yeah, but I’ve been told that collection is only in japanese. In fact, you need to create a japanese account, then buy it and play it in japanese.

        • Makoto Itou

Yeah. Both versions are in Japanese. I believe your second sentence is incorrect though. I don’t own the collection but I own Yakuza 5, Kenzan and Ishin and I use them with my US PSN account. I think you only need a JP PSN for DLC or if you buy the game digitally.

  • Ciaran Doherty

Hopefully we’ll see Nishiki, Yumi, Reina, Shinji and other Yakuza I Characters in the game :].

  • Max Leo

    This sounds amazing…..

I’m expecting a Jingu and a Shimano cameo at one point.

  • Ric Vazquez

Zero chances for a western release

  • Izanagidonutz

But how do I read the moonrunes

  • leingod

Another awesome game we won’t get. Yay.

  • Namuro

Maybe that’s the reason they won’t localize the series any more, having people calling an important part of their culture “crap”…

  • Thatguy

I heard, that there was JAV contest for this game. Maybe to replace Haruka.

  • Namuro

And like I said, that’s exactly why they won’t localize anymore…

  • AkuLord3

She’s like 16, yeah sure still young but hey that’s not any different from any other place with famous teens doing that. COUGH COUGH Disney…COUGH. If you didn’t like that part of the game, whatever…its not the whole thing.

  • Max Leo

    Britney Spears says hello.

  • samsneeze

“important part of their culture “crap”…”

I think you’re way too much stock into it, personally.

  • Guest

How is it so important? l doubt they would base their publishing decisions on the reception of a mini game. When a publisher stops localizing a game for a certain region, it’s usually always a matter of sales.

  • Namuro

    “Way too much stock”

I don’t quite get that. What does that mean?

  • Namuro

I guess next time I should just add something like “I’m joking” or “I was being sarcastic” at the end of the comment, just to avoid confusing some people…

  • Nate Barrett

Poor sales in a niche market would actually be the reason. Sega is not basing their localizations on comments made by nerds on gaming websites.

  • Namuro
