Persona 5 Director Katsura Hashino Has Another Message For Fans

Atlus just revealed a first look at Persona 5 with a teaser trailer during the SCEJA Press Conference 2014. Following the livestream, Persona series chief director Katsura Hashino left a message for the fans on the series’ official blog. Here’s what he said:

Hello, everyone. This is the Persona Team’s Hashino.

While it was sudden, during the conference that was held by SCE earlier today, they showed a trailer for the Persona series’ latest main numbered title, Persona 5. The setting is reversed from the previous title, as the title will depict the lives of youths living in a setting of a big city.

I apologize for only being able to show so little, but it would make me happy to know that you all have been able to get a glimpse of the game’s atmosphere.

Persona 5 was announced last year, and in addition to the release for PlayStation 3, we’re currently developing a PlayStation 4 version to release simultaneously in 2015. Furthermore, it’s very regretful that we’ll keep you guys waiting (I’m sorry ; ;), but I believe we’ll have a great game that will remain in your hearts.

While this may seem presumptuous to mention in the midst of all the high expectations, I am in charge of the direction of the game, following Persona 3 and Persona 4. Also returning is character designer [Shigenori Soejima] who worked on the previous title, and [Shoji Meguro] in charge of music, and together with trusted and reliable staff members, we’re pushing forward and working hard.

Personally speaking, after directing Catherine, I was supposed to prepare for making titles on HD consoles… but that’s a story from a very long time ago. Since then, we’ve worked together with the team staff on developing various titles, and each one has exceeded my expectations.

Not only in terms of games, but they’ve also reached TV anime series, stage plays, live concerts, and even a theatrical anime film. Honestly, the only thing I’ve planned and produced outside of video games is Persona Stalker Club that is currently going on over at Nico Nico Douga.

In addition to the folks at Aniplex who’ve produced our anime, we are very fortunate to have so many projects and support, and I’m truly grateful. I believe that it is a result from all the support from the fans. Thank you very much.

Again, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Atlus fans who’ve been supporting us since the past. As you may know, the current series saw a change in production staff back in Persona 3, from visuals, music, to a new view of the world.

In those days, there was a great deal of uncertainty, and even with all the pros and cons, we were blessed with many fans who’ve continued enjoying and supporting us, since the early days to the latest titles. On behalf of the development staff, I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

I hope that we’ll have something that will bring you all plenty of joy, and I also hope you all look forward to its completion. Thank you for your continued support!

Persona 5 will release in 2015 in Japan for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

I’m just glad we got to see anything at all. The series has been great up to this point, I trust that it’ll continue to grow

  • jeka69

Giving one of the best news from the conference, but still apologizing for not giving more. Japanese devs confirmed for angels.

    • 愛憎

It was great news, but it was just an anime short. It showed us very little about the actual game (beyond the location, some incidents in the game world, and appearance of the main character). I look forward to seeing gameplay.

      • jeka69

It actually shows us more about the settings and the people living inside it:

        1. Every scene has somebody using cellphone. So cellphone is going to be a part of or THE theme of P5.
        2. Cellphone’s main function is to communicate, so communication or lack thereof will be the main issues.
        3. That also meant (hopefully upgraded) social links.
        4. The time stopping at the end may mean MC is trapped within something, a la TWEWY. Or just P5′s version of dark hour.
        5. The trailer starts with MC riding a train, just like P3 and P4.
        6. Meaning it’ll continue the… ‘feelings’ of P3 and P4 rather than first two.
        7. The fire, also at the end, implies MC is burning his dread.

It’s like poetry; subtle but meaningful. Or maybe I’m just autistic.

        • thrak

NO NO NO NO DAMN CELLPHONES I LIKED DEVIL SURVIVOR BUT CELLPHONES ARE THE LAMEST PART OF THAT GAME

          • Aesma

Correction, Devil Survivor uses COMP, Devil Survivor 2 is the one that use phones.

          • thrak

I meant both. I like both games a lot but that stupid nintendo ds ad and cellphone ad was very over-the-top and ridiculous

          • Vallen

well if you played Catherine you’d know the crazy shyt they can do with social links if the cellphone is like in that game

          • thrak

Thats a different thing. I just don’t want them to use their smartphone to summon a persona. It would be straight of cheap shonen anime for younger boys

        • Jadfish

I imagined that dungeons this time around, would be in broad daylight. Time is stopped, so all the people, cars and objects freeze in place and can’t be moved, forming a maze-like dungeon. Fighting monsters in the street is awesome!

Different dungeons would be different disctricts of shibuya.

          • Kaetsu

That kind of reminds me of Persona 3. S.E.E.S had to kill monsters during the dark hour because if the shadows caused destruction to the real world while everyone was transmogrified, it would cause a panic.

        • Shade DMessiah

“Implies MC is burning his dread.”
          I died.

        • 愛憎

          You only made guesses, though.
I guess these weird hype trains, fueled by mere announcements without gameplay, are things I’d like to derail.

          Train analogies.

        • Lightdx Darkcloud

I think you could probably be right about the cellphones. I won’t but for the rest thought.
Also want to add that we probably had a glimpse from others main characters in some scenes it is just that we don’t know they are,

  • Ecchitori

Teddie salutes your awesomeness! Thank you for bringing us these amazing games and keep up the good work!

    • Lightdx Darkcloud

You should at a bear pun to make it better xD

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

No worries. Such little preview has created a big ripple of hype on the fandom, which is good and to look forward to with great anticipation.

Keep up the good work and thanks, Hashino-san. More power to you, to ATLUS, as well as to the entire Persona team. We will be glued on everything about this game in the coming weeks and months.

  • ehtnah

ah Atlus…. I love persona series (and all SMT ^^), but…. but after treating us European like Atlus did I can’t enjoys that news…. not after releasing SMT 4 on 3ds in the eshop…
hopefully the ps3 (and maybe ps4?) is region free so I can import it if Atlus spit on us again, and again…. I can’t boycott it, I’m waiting for P5 since P4 on ps2! aaah I’m screw take my money already I’m too weak T-T

    • CycloneFox

Both PS3 ans PS4 are region free.
But you have to be careful in terms of digital releases on the PS4 and Vita, as those do not support a shared game library, as the PS3 does.

Meaning, while you can play a US download with your european account on the PS3, you can’t do so on the PS4 or Vita. On PS4 and Vita, you have to own the game with your account to start it. But if you import a retail copy of an American or Japanese game, for example, you can play it with any account. You can even earn trophys of games, that aren’t even localized (For example, I’ve got some Japanese trophies). But MP may be a problem. I’m looking into that right now, as I would want to import Destiny on PS4 from the US, but play it with my German account. I’ve had problems with the MP of an imported Vita game. But the Singlepalyer were no problem.

    • Bri-tastic

I imagine it’s not as easy for them to release in Europe. Atlus doesn’t have a European branch, they had to rely on other publishers. Maybe the publishers didn’t take the game seriously enough to release it in an adequate timeline?

Defending Atlus a bit because I’ve worked in development for devs AND publishers, and most of the the time problems are caused by publishers. Since Sega, I think Atlus is taking more of a hands on approach?

  • Yuki97

    I love this series~

  • http://hanzoadam.tumblr.com/ Hanzoadam

    great read

  • King Dedede

    Please don’t forget that P1 and P2 exist…

    • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince
      • makubexnas

        my favorite character…

        • Daioh

          It’s a common problem

    • Nice Boat Quatro

The problem is that P1 and P2 had different staff members from P3 and P4 so Hashino can’t go touching around another man’s work.

      • Ash_Riot

Some of those guys from back then are still there, such as Kaneko and Soejima (he did art in Persona 2). It’s just that most of them now work on other Atlus series like mainline SMT or spin offs (Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner etc). Speaking of them, wonder what they’re up to now?

        • Tom_Phoenix

Don’t forget Meguro, though much to the chagrin of many P1 fans, he treats his work on the original P1 as some sort of old shame.

      • Lightdx Darkcloud

He actually can if he is asked by atlus. It is not an other man work is the company work and they can do what ever they want with it.

    • ThatGuy3190_7

P1 and P2 were popular(?) but they weren’t as popular as P3 and P4 are. Granted, some events tie back to P1 and P2 and there is a brief mention of the previous title in every new title, but I think once they make a new numbered game, they’d like to make something new and not have it to be a direct sequel.

      • Ash_Riot

Actually, before P4 came out, P1 was the best selling release in the series. It was P2: Eternal Punishment that bombed and killed the series for a long time before they revived it with P3.

        • LightZero

Where you got that from? Tadashi left Atlus and became a freelancer. He was the brains behind the original trilogy. They simply decided to reboot the series with Hashino taking over his work.

          • Ash_Riot

I recall Cozy Okada being the brains behind Persona (and MegaTen at large) before Hashino took over the reigns. A shame that nobody remembers the guy. Tadashi was the scenario writer though, yeah.

          • LightZero

Okada had some influence but Tadashi was the one who wrote the story.

        • Tom_Phoenix

Actually, P1 still IS the best selling release in the series. But one could argue that P3/P4 have the advantage in that their fanbase is dedicated enough to be willing to rebuy the games on other systems. P3P and P4G nearly matched the sales of their predecessors.

          • Ash_Riot

I was meaning combining the sales of the original and re-releases, which P4 would win on.

          • Lightdx Darkcloud

Actually here i read that P4 is actually the winner with more than 800,000 copies sold around the world and if you pull it together P3 with FES and P3P has sold almost the doble of that. P2 and P1 aren/t even sold the half of what P4 has sold.

And about the fan base tht is rue. I have in hard copy the first P3 and also have the P3: Fes, P4, P4A, P4U. I also have P3: FES and P4 in digital (10 dollars each so). I’ll try to get the Ps Tv so i can play P4: Golden and i’m thinking about buying PQ even when i have not 3ds for the cards and the soundtrack (don’t have 3ds) but i have heard some track of PQ and they are crazy good.

            http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?page=1&results=200&name=Shin%20Megami%20Tensei:%20Persona&platform=&minSales=0&publisher=&genre=&sort=GL

          • Tom_Phoenix

I guess I should have clarified that I meant that P1 is still the best selling release in the series in Japan. Obviously, worldwide is a different story, since the series didn’t really have much of a Western fanbase until P3.

Also, putting together the sales of the originals with the sales of ports/rereleases is counterproductive. Since those ports/rereleases are mostly bought by the same people who bought the original, it doesn’t paint an accurate picture regarding the popularity of each title at the time of their original release. It doesn’t help that P1/P2 received ports/rereleases MUCH later compared to P3/P4 and also didn’t have almost anything in the way of extra content.

          • Hound

I’d say the number of people that buy a sequel or port of a game shows the original game’s popularity.

People usually don’t buy a game because they loved that particular game (UNLESS it’s a port.)

They buy it because they love the concept, the game before it, the proposed changes, or the things that other people said about the game/series (if they hear a lot of talk about a series or hear a lot of people mention it, just a little curiosity or loneliness can push purchases.)

That’s why Call of Duty Ghosts sold really well in the west. Game was atrocious trash, especially compared to the game immediately before it, but people had brand loyalty because they loved the online play of the games prior.

Many people were finding new pokemon games to appear too recycled and generational competition too steep of a curve. X/Y changed the art style and offered new things. The game sells bigger all of a sudden. Next game probably won’t see any such jump due to people’s personal experiences. Not a bad thing, but taste over many years is status quo unless it’s a phenomena

I could be wrong. I’m still working out my decision on the “how many units will Pokemon OR/AS sell” pool me and some friends are having (a marketing study really.. we do the same for movies.)

        • LDM

Curious, are you referring sales in Japan? Because here in NA, the Persona series didn’t get “mainstream” attention until Persona 3 came out.

          • Ash_Riot

JRPGs sold better back then than they do now.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

too late, they already forgot about those games. They managed to make P3 as “the first persona”.

  • Rocco

Hashino, Soejima, and Meguro; the awesome trio that changed my life with persona series and encouraged me to pursuing my true self.

    • thrak

This is very true, couldn’t have been said better

  • Wrathful

I don’t know about you but I wish Atlus goes back to that brooding atmosphere Persona 2 and Nocturne had. Persona 4 had murder mystery and dark feels at times but to me it felt more like Scooby and the gangs. Hopefully no more running in the same looking dungeons.

    • Nice Boat Quatro

Just because it’s brooding it doesn’t mean it’s good. Also, I could play a drinking game whenever somebody randomly compares with Persona 4 with Scooby Doo just because it had mystery.

      • Suzaku

It’s not just because it had mystery. It’s because it frequently veered into a comedic tone with a bunch of kids running around town solving mysteries.

        • Slayven19

I see nothing wrong with that, besides the first game had that as well in some parts of the game so it was nothing new. Also the other series(the SMT) is always dark so i’m glad they can change it up with persona games. Don’t get me wrong though I like for it to go back to the persona 2 atmosphere but good heavens. I’m tired of people begging for it to go back to that like its a problem for the series.

        • Shippoyasha

I think the comedic tone was a bold move though. And it actually paid off, because it was a nice segue from the much darker happenings in the core game.

      • Jadfish

I had a self imposed drinking game for P4 where I would take out a can of beer and empty it every time the MC gets the option to say “Calm Down”

Had to do several beer runs over a weekend.

    • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

Agree,I hope P5 will be more like P1/2/3 and less P4 in terms of atmosphere. P4 is too…cheerful for my liking.

      • Shade DMessiah

Ever let someone stay in the TV world?

    • Suzaku

Completely agree. I want a return to the darker atmosphere of the earlier Persona games.

    • Kaetsu

Everyone has this obsession with being dark and gritty. Of course I’m fine with a darker tone like Persona 2&3 but Persona 4 might be my favourite game in the series and it’s atmosphere is one of the reasons why. I just really like all the colour and how vibrant it felt. The pop/jazzy music was also awesome and it’s my favourite music in the series.

      • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

This and Nice Boat’s comment. I enjoyed the heck out of P4G due to the atmosphere. Whilst I enjoyed P3P, and I thought I’d prefer it more, P4G grew on me with each subsequent playthrough.

      • piichan

Agreed. I’ve only played 3 and 4 and I ended up enjoying P4 because of the theme and the atmosphere. And I swear I could run around town for hours just to listen to “Your Affection”

      • LDM

I think it’s common knowledge by now that the obligatory “P1/P2 hipsters” (that I now dubbed them) start posting every time a new article of the Persona series shows up.

      • Bio438

This. People are under some sort of presumptuous thinking that a story can only be well written if it is ‘dark’. And also from what I’ve learnt all they mean by dark is a character death, stories have been dark and gritty forever with no one dying. Some of the best written stories have been very light in both content and tone.

      • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

There is definitely an obsession with dark and gritty that is increasing now even; but I think in the case of classic Persona fans who want things darker, it’s the opposite. It’s a genuine, not as forced thing. That’s pretty rare, and their recent titles aren’t like that even.

I don’t prefer it usually myself, but when it’s done well like Nocturne and their older titles, I do enjoy it and appreciate how well handled it is.

        • Shippoyasha

Well, on the otherhand, P4′s cheeriness didn’t feel forced either. I love both types really. But P4 is still pretty unique in how it balances out teenagers-being-teenagers with the darker lore that’s happening in the other side of society.

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Not at all. I quite liked the bright atmosphere and all it had, but I do believe it had some tonal balancing issues. I think its emotional aspects were well handled, but when it tried to really bring in the darker elements, they felt too light or too forced. But to a point, I don’t think that can be helped. Heh, but I remember having this convo with Ishaan a while back, and I don’t want to repeat myself too much. x’D

          • Shippoyasha

That’s cool. I do think they could have had more storytelling elements as well, though as-is, a first playthrough of P4 is still a 60-70 hour experience.

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Definitely. I didn’t get to everything I liked, but I still had a great and pretty well-rounded time with P4.

        • Lightdx Darkcloud

In P3 i hated “The answer” it told us the hero really died (i rather happy ending) when it was not needed and it was too much Aigis centred when the original story didn’t needed at all, she was out of place in that games and the creators said in the art book. The ending of P3 was algo very bad with her. The P3P ending was a lot better for me since you could choose the girl you were going to be at the end and it left to your imagination the fate of the MC. Still i liked the dark and sadness they put in story of P3 as it advanced and even shinjiro dead, i loved that part althought i would be fine if you had a while to save him like in P3P.

P4 gaves a happy ending and everything and it was nice, but it was pretty light and good for the most part. I liked i a lot but I no loved the story as a whole as much as P3, still i liked the ending a lot, lot more than P3′s. Golden and arena haven’t made any bad either as Answer did.

    • 愛憎

That’s the one thing that makes Persona hard to play for me. It’s difficult for me to overlook the—I’d say unarguably horrendous—dungeon design.

      • Kaetsu

Persona 4 didn’t have this problem.

        • 愛憎

Hmm. I only played a couple dungeons in P4, but I didn’t find them interesting, either. I felt that opening doors just added to the tedium.

          • Lightdx Darkcloud

P3 dungeon was there because it had to be but it was tediose, no flor had a meaning, you had to do the dungeon only to continue the story. P4 Dungeon was fine since every dungeon there was part of the story, they also had their funny and dark parts there.

    • ArminJrpg

Dont worry hashino himself said that it will be Darker

      • http://negima.wikia.com/wiki/Asuna_Kagurazaka Asuna Kagurazaka

The guy we seen in the Trailer looks like he’d be a dark character himself. Infact the Trailer itself practically screamed ‘It’s gonna be dark!’ to me.

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

Aside from the stakes being lower for most of P4 (aka your friends at risk vs the entire world) and one specific event in P3, I actually felt Persona 4 was pretty dark. Then again, I’ve only played the original and not golden.

      • Shippoyasha

P4 did have world wide implications actually. The Sagiris were talking about global/human-wide ramifications that wouldn’t stop at Inaba.

        • Afternoon Intergalactic

Thats why I said *for most of p4*. In p3 the shadow threat and dark hour always from the beginning had those ramifications.

          • Shippoyasha

I guess it’s just the type of slow burn P4 had, which I absolutely adored. Putting it all out early (or more accurately, mid-way) like in P3 is good too.

    • Shippoyasha

Ain’t nothing wrong with Scooby Do. That said, P4 did mix up the darker elements on the edges and it had a bit of a creeping dread vibe even though the daily life seemed peaceful. I really loved that about P4. They can always mix up the feel of the games, one being dark, one being less so and more intermixed with the cheery atmosphere.

  • Rawindra

I hope the gameplay will be like Kingdom Heart, but with some of hack n’ slash fills (like DMC, Overture, MGRR, Marvel’s MUA & XML series & Bayonetta) & new features like can switch into other 3 characters from 4 team slots (1 already set lock for protagonist)

    • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

I don’t think we’ll see the game move to a Kingdom Hearts-style game with hack n’ slash elements.

If you wanted the game to be as you wanted with interchangable characters, it would have to be like the ‘Tales of’ series, and that isn’t going to happen..

    • http://twitter.com/GNPixie Lynx

      That’s Devil Summoner’s stick.

Persona has always been traditional turn based, although the original game had rows that you needed to worry about.

      • 愛憎

        Schtick*
Unless there is something about the Devil Summoner sub-series that I don’t know…

    • Kaetsu

Did you just categorize Kingdom Hearts with Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising?!?

I don’t think P5 will have an action based combat system. All of the games have been turn based so I don’t think Atlus will mess with that.

    • http://playstationallstars.wikia.com/wiki/PlayStation_All-Stars_Wiki Sackchief

Uhh, no I can’t get around that. The game must be turn based.

    • ArminJrpg

TURN BASED. PURE TURN BASED. not even ATB. yea :P not that i hate those but P5 shouldnt be action!

    • Jey

      uuuh.. how about no.

Persona 3-4 had excellent turn based gameplay. Dont fix what’s not broken

    • mckun

Actually that happens in SMT devil summoner Raidou so check that out if you want.

    • Thatguy

So… uh… Shin Megami Tensei: Persona Musou?

  • MinakoArisato

Please keep on with the amazing work you have already done for us, Hashino-sama.

    • 愛憎

      Sama?
      Whoa.

      • MinakoArisato

I have a lot of respect for him, so yes, I thought it might be acurate.

        • 愛憎

I think that’s awesome to admire someone so much! I’m never addressed with “-sama,” outside of letters and from government workers. I hope someone gives me an admiration “-sama” one day.

          • MinakoArisato

Well, its Persona that helped me out of personal misery. So… Yes, all you need to do is help others, I guess^^

          • 愛憎

Awh. That’s so nice! I hope that I can get more into P3P. I stopped playing the other month because I really wasn’t enjoying Tartarus—in fact, I really despise that aspect of the game. I always dread going back there.. The character interactions are quite fun and interesting, though!

          • MinakoArisato

Well, Persona 3 was only a try to make something new. I am sure that the Persona Studio already refined the systems by some degree. So lets see what we get with P5.

      • thrak

If he is the kind of person you want to become when you grow up, it is okay. ‘San’ is more casual than you think.

        • 愛憎

Huh? I didn’t mention ‘san,’ but you’re totally right—I wouldn’t know; I just live in Japan and speak Japanese. Thanks for informing me.

          • thrak

Can you please turn your arrogance down a notch? First, I didn’t want to teach you anything, I said that in humorous, good-natured way and what I said was in defense of a person who called Hashino ‘sama’ – I felt like he/she is being mocked. Second, I didn’t know if you are japanese or not, why do i automatically have to know you? And why the hell do you speak to me in the manner as if I did something bad personally to you? If I am wrong, correct me in an appropriate, non-asshole way. If not, shut the f*ck up.

“why do i automatically have to know you?”
That’s exactly why I found your comment strange. ” ‘San’ is more casual than you think” implied to me that you were teaching me something that I’m incorrect about. Because I never said anything about that honorific, I found that strange. I apologize for doing that so rudely. That was immature of me.

          • thrak

I accept your apologies but considering what you said before, it is hard for me to tell if you are just sarcastic again

Hashino, Soejima, and Meguro are a holy trinity. I can’t wait.

    All you needed to say.

  • Spectre

Such a long paragraph and so little content.. !

  • Prithivi

    In Persona Team we trust!

Take as long as want if you’re going to release a game like Persona 4!

  • piichan

I was holding on to the ps3 because of this, but with the ps4 announcement, I can finally move on.

  • Suriel Cruz

    Thanks!
Keep up the great work. The less you show us, the better the experience for us. At least I think like that.

  • Ash_Riot

Nocturne and Catherine fan here! Oh yeah, I also like P3 and 4 too… ;)
Looking forward to seeing other new titles from Atlus too.

  • raeldor

I’ve got a feeling they’re really going to bring it on the emotional side this time. I think we may be shedding a few tears Clannad-style before the game is over.

    • 하세요

Persona 3 didn’t already do that? I teared up a few times during the course of playing that game, especially the end.

      • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Even though I feel P3 does (I still haven’t even played it), I don’t feel that with most of P4 nor at all for Catherine of course. So it’s like they’ve been lacking that lately.

        • Shippoyasha

What do you mean ‘of course’? I thought P4 and Catherine had a ton of great emotion.

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I say of course for Catherine mostly. I don’t think there’s aspects of Catherine that would make someone teary? It’s not as though you’re delving into Katherine or Catherine’s emotional issues and trying to sort out your relationship with them seriously. But that’s also not how the game is designed. Catherine is no where near as emotionally investing or full as P4, but I also don’t think P4 really holds the atmosphere and some of the emotional quality I see from P3. Both have their sides, but it’s just different matters of where it all lies.

But then again, this is just both of our opinions, and we’ll feel differently about the games. ^u^

          • Shippoyasha

Well. Catherine definitely was more suspense and mystery than it originally seemed. And I think P4 mellowed out the drama with the ‘back to real life routine and friends’ dynamic which was a very realistic way people handle grief and stress. They differently go for different emotions for sure. Though all of them have that SMT darkness and surrealism.

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I’m just super glad it’s coming to PS4, by 2016 (The most logical projected date for the game) a lot of PS3 games will start fizzling out and It’d personally be easier for me to not have to switch between PS3, PS4 and a whole lot of Nintendo consoles constantly.

    • LDM

I am planning to get a PS4 and retire my PS3 after 2015. Unless Namco follows ATLUS’s route and release Tales of Zesteria for the PS4 as well, then I will retire early of buying games of the PS3.

Man, I just realized the Persona 5 logo looks pretty much just like the Sony Blu-Ray logo ……..

*ah-hum* Ah anyways, pretty nice words, Hashino. ^^ I’m excited and hope to see something interesting and fresh, just like when P3 came about.

  • Ben Green

Does he even have any idea that this Persona 5 news has made fans all over the world go freaking insane??

    • Lightdx Darkcloud

He probably does. But he begon to do that since the first news about the game where they showed nothing but chairs and chains specially if you were a fan that watched (video or in live) that event as me. I almost lost my hair that day.

  • LuluKoizumi

I just hope they have a option to choose between a female and male and there is no name given to them already cause that would destroy the experience of the game

    • thrak

I actually don’t really like giving them a name because I am not good at inventing japanese names. I’ll just go with something bland like Hiroshi Yamagawa because I don’t know how to create names based on kanji in their names
P.S. Actually, all anime characters have some kanji in their names that refer to their hobby or personality

      • LuluKoizumi

You don’t need Japanese names at all I mean I called the mc of persona 4 butt plug ._. You can name them your name and make it you alot of people do it.

        • thrak

I think I treat names of heroes with more respect than you, haha…I don’t care for names anyway, to be honest. I gave my hero in p4 a western name, actually. I admit, most time I just go with first initial letters instead of full names -_-’

          • LuluKoizumi

Respect? Why would I respect a game character? ._. They aren’t real people and I can name them what I want to name them simple. If you choose a western name that’s great at least your giving him one so you can feel connected, I always name them something cool before I have fun with it is that really so wrong? Is that against the rules? Is it?

          • thrak

Oh, calm down it is up to you how the hell do you name it, but I really treat characters with more seriousness, especially starting with p3. I mean, Minato dies. Okay, it is a pointless conversation

          • LuluKoizumi

People die each day be it they have a name or they don’t. If he dies then he dies, p3 was my favorite because of how dark it was and it will always be held high for me. I make fun of p4 because compared to p3 I don’t think it’s the best out there. But I digress because this comment will start something most likely and I don’t have time for it since I have important things to do so I shall bid farewell to everyone.

          • thrak

Haha thats one thing we agree on! (p3 being better)
            Cheers!

        • French

My character is called Francis lol, dont see why it needs to be Japanese

        • Yacku

I hate my name in videogames, “sebastian” has too many letters for most of them and I can’t write it completely. Also in, japanese games, for some reason it reminds people of a buttler…

      • César H. Sandoval

Just name it like some anime character you like, that’s what I do since P3.

      • Jadfish

In P3 I saw that the MC liked listening to music, so I called him Nobuo Uematsu.

Man he got so many girls.

      • Bio438

The character is an avatar for yourself so presumably you would name him after yourself. Persona protagonists are self inserts and always will be.

        • Hound

But.. the entire Megaten and Persona franchise is Fujoshi bait. So, they’re hardly avatars of the player. They’re avatars of your desires and interests. Your persona

          • Bio438

Its like Link, hardly anyone looks like him but he is supposed to be the player.

          • Hound

I dunno. I find Windwaker Link to be a cartoon character and every other link to be some guy that’s very goal-minded regardless of what happened.

            I can’t really relate.

Most links are a tool. Windwaker is a kid that’s out of place in a world of adventure

          • Bio438

“I don’t want people to get hung up on the way Link looks because ultimately Link represents the player in the game. I don’t want to define him so much that it becomes limiting to the players. I want players to focus on other parts of the trailer and not specifically on the character because the character Link represents, again, the player.”

    • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Same. I’m kinda interested in it now, but I’ll pick it up if they give the option. If not? Meh. After this long, there’s really no excuse.

    • ArminJrpg

I always name them Armin Fair LOL. my first name plus Zack fair ya know lol

    • Warboss Aohd

Considering he will likely get all the Humie Females, all the Money, will be fighting Crime, and few people will likely know.

      ergo, Persona Protagonist = Batman.

his name shall be Bruce Wayne.

      • friendly neighborhood_dude

        You won the damn internet!

    • MinakoArisato

I hope that too. Having to choose a gender is helping all players to reflect themselves with the protagonist. It also brings a lot more depth to the game, many viewpoints, as Perona 3 Portable already showed.
It would definetly be an enhancement!

And the thing with the name, there won’t be any name given to him/her. Not in the main game, I believe.

    • Aesma

…since when do the protagonists have names? The names are added once the series become popular enough to gain anime/manga/novel adaptations, since calling the protagonists there as ‘you’ or by title all the time will be strange.

You’ll see a lot of Minato Arisato vs Makoto Yuuki and Seta Souji vs Narukami Yu arguments because of that.

      • natchu96

I think people stopped arguing against Narukami nearly as much ever since Arena and the Animation.

        • Aesma

I know. Still doesn’t change the fact that at first they argued a lot. Narukami Yu might be the official name they have decided now, but in the past, he had no official name.

I was just trying to say that each protagonist doesn’t have official names at first. …and probably never will have if not for the games’ popularity spawning anime and spin off.

          • SeventhEvening

I still pretend the protagonists don’t have official names.

    • Hound

Mine were named Maxwell Rogers, Roger Maxwell, Jack Atlus, Jake Rogers, and Jacob Atlus… and Jen Rogers

I needed unique names for each them and wasn’t very creative XP
I think I’ll have trouble with this one… I guess I could name him Flynn Rogers =/ ?

They’re like a family of coffee pirates.

    • Lightdx Darkcloud

I actually not but i the same time i also hope that. I mean that i want the original and canon game to not have a gender choose, but i want them in a “no canon port edition” like P3P. It is hard for the if you want to keep something from it for future, because you won’t be able to talk about the hero of this title in next titles if you don’t know if he was a he or a she. Maybe some twins where you can chose could also works.

Still it really good to get later the other perspective so you can get to know other male characters.

About the name. I usually ending naming them Dark Light, because i liked Light as name in Death note and the mix represent to me the human heart with his light and dark there. It suits a protagonist which has his/her personality made from your choises.

  • JustThisOne

I’m very impressed by the comments here! I expected people to go Final Fantasy Versus nuts. I guess making the proper PR decisions, such as apologizing and explaining delays really does make a huge difference. Well, I guess it’s also because Persona doesn’t have as huge a fanbase as FF either.

I digress! I’m glad to be hearing anything at all about this game, but I’m a bit disappointed that this is all we’ll be seeing this time. Oh well, back to patiently waiting! *__* I’m cool with this!

    • Jadfish

The Persona series has nothing to prove after 3 and 4. P5 will most likely be really good, so it’s easy to trust their word on it.
Final Fantasy on the other hand…

      • ClaudiusWhite

I’m not worried about Final Fantasy. I enjoyed the XIII series and it’s very likely I will enjoy XV as well. Besides, FFXV is being directed by Tetsuya Nomura who has already proven himself with Kingdom Hearts has he not?

        • Jadfish

Not storywise. Gameplay he has in the bag.

I disliked FFXIII, and the sequels were worse (good thing a friend lent me them so I could test em out). That would have been fine, another mainline FF I didn’t like, just put it next to FFII and FFVIII and be done with it. The problem was that it was all that we got during 7th gen. If you didn’t like Lightning, suck it, that was what you got, so the Final Fantasy brand is not especially good looking right now.
Now, FFXV looks cool, but I’m not willing to get my hopes up for it until I see more of it. P3 and P4 were awesome, so I feel that I can trust them enough to get hyped over P5.

        • Aaron K Stone

But Kingdom Hearts is a mess storywise.

    • Richard N

That probably has a lot to do with Versus being announced nearly a decade ago and P5 last year. Also, its just popular to hate on Squeenix for anything these days anyway.

    • Vallen

The thing with ATLUS though, they always deliver. The fans have full confidence in their games. SE on the other hand, failed to deliver for the past decade or so

  • César H. Sandoval

Yeah P5 was the best news from last night, can’t wait to know more at TGS.

    • Vallen

Hoping for a gameplay and/or character introduction trailer at TGS!

      • César H. Sandoval

        Why not both? xD

    • http://twitter.com/GNPixie Lynx

      Thank you.
It needs another shakeup ala 2 to 3.

    • Shippoyasha

I still love S-Links. They can improve upon it but I wouldn’t want them to be gone. There’s a lot of character depth even from non crucial NPCs and I don’t want that element to go away. Though I do want to see it impact the core game more thoroughly.

      • Anontastic

If nothing else, I hope it stops being so “Dating sim 101″.

        - Say the right thing
        - Get S.Link points
        - Say the wrong thing
        - Reload your save and say the right thing

It doesn’t make me feel any closer to the characters. It’s just tedious and unengaging.

        • Shippoyasha

To be fair, the whole visual novel element has historically come from dating sims. It’s not a bad thing. It’s just the roots of that style that was popularized by dating sims.

I agree it should have more depth, but there are some actual dating moments that could actually afford to be like dating sims instead of only very few choices.

Some Social Links were pretty nebulous with their choices too, though, even as far back as P3.

          • MinakoArisato

Yes, the social-link-system was pretty raw at the beginning. But I believe that they refined it in some way. The social links may be not as loved as a mechanic, I don’t know about that, but in terms of psychology and plot, it definetly was the right thing to do.

Also, there are many possibilities to enhance that mechanic, maybe influencing plot depending on what social links you have, or even being able to recruit those whose Social Link was maxed.
I think there is a lot of potential, that wasn’t grasped yet.

          • Shippoyasha

I think a lot of people DO like S. Links. But even fans probably do realize that it can simply get better. I think just throwing it out is really unfair is all.

They can try things like interconnecting it with the core plot more, having different outcomes and you’re right, even recruiting new members would be great.

For me, I wish there was more leeway to get into S.Links earlier in the game and not be in a hurry to keep doing them so I can barely squeeze in maxing them in the final months of the story. Also, different ways to maximize your Persona and getting new items would be nice too. Though making S Links totally without incentive won’t sit right with me.

          • MinakoArisato

I agree, I guess there is nothing to add here :)

      • Pyrofrost

Besides the J-pop/J-rock OSTs, S-Links was one of the additions that helped put Persona on the map and make it more mainstream.

I seriously doubt it’s going anywhere, and I wouldn’t want it to. It has pretty much become a core part of what Persona is. If anything, they will be improving upon it and making it better, as they did previously from P3 to P4.

    • Twilleppac

Why would you want them to toss out something that was so integral to how P3 and P4 worked and very integral to their success? You might as well ask them to tear out half of the fucking game.

      • Doomer1122

Play Persona 1 and 2. There’s your answer.
Social links aren’t a “key feature” of Persona. They were added into 3 and 4.
Persona 1 and 2 were very similar, while Persona 3 and 4 were similar but VERY different than the first 2 games. I hope 5 does it’s own thing.

I’m not ripping on Social links, however I want to see them move past that mechanic to something new.

        • Twilleppac

I did, Persona 1 is okay, Persona 2 sucks, I have no clue how people legitimately enjoy it.

Edit: I played Innocent Sin, rather. I didn’t play Eternal Punishment because of how much I didn’t like Innocent Sin.

    • leingod

I actually loved S-links. Made me care for those characters in a way I never did for P1-P2 ones.

  • Warboss Aohd

    So Wait……….it’s more like Persona 1 and 2 than 3 and 4?

    PRAISE GORK AND MORK!

    • InfinityAge11

What was said that made you think that?

      • Warboss Aohd

        i heard no social links.

did one of the other humies lie to me?

        • InfinityAge11

….Possibly. I don’t see that anywhere in the above article at least, thats all I’m going off of, not what anyone else has said.

        • MinakoArisato

I have never read anything like that.
But what was said is, that “Those who enjoyed Persona 3 and 4 will feel at home in Persona 5″.
          So…

          • natchu96

Maybe they’re throwing the plot off the darker side of the cliff and off into the deep end?

P3 was still on the darker side but not by too much, and P4 was so happy-go-lucky that even hell will start selling party balloons.

    • E.T.993

Want something that’s more Persona 1 and 2 than Persona 3 and 4? GO BUY SMTIV.

  • Shippoyasha

Love to see him be so enthusiastic about the anime and other spinoffs as well. The guy is right in that the people who are handling Persona spinoffs have largely been doing a very good job and it’s cool he’s acknowledging it.

    • Vallen

I love teams like his, who love their work just as much as the fans and together with the fans strive to make it even better. I also like how he appreciates the love persona gets, it just makes me want to support them even more. (hate devs who never listen to fans or with a high ego)

  • BalmungX

What kind of mythology do you think they will use this time?

    • MinakoArisato

We already discussed that matter, someone had theories about english mythology ala Arthur and the round table.

I believe it to be greek again. Chains, society and punishment sound a lot like Prometheus to me.

      What is your theory?

      • Black Heaven

They could always diversify their mythologies.

Not Persona but, Digital Devil Saga seem to have had a large inspiration from Hindu lore.
They could also try Norse this time. I really didn’t like their generic designs for Loki, Thor, Odin and Surt.

        • MinakoArisato

I see, norse mythology is very popular here. I would like to learn something from that, too, so I would like your idea.

      • Adriaan den Ouden

Prometheus wasn’t a slave though, he was imprisoned for giving mankind fire.

I could see Egyptian myth working a bit, specifically where it intersects with Hebrew myth. Egyptian antagonists, Hebrew protagonists with Moses as a central point?

        • MinakoArisato

Hmmm, I saw it like: Fighting the society (The godly who enslaved mankind) and then being punished for that.

Oh, thats a very interesting point. I never thought about that to be honest, but it realy makes sense.

      • BalmungX

I don’t have a theory since i didn’t see enough to get a hint, but i would like the Norse mythology

        • MinakoArisato

          I see, Norse mythology.
Well, there also exist chains, the chains of gleipnir, if I recall correctly. Sadly, I don’t know much about it, does someone know about that?

I thought those chains bound the Fenrir, but still, I am not sure.

          • Aesma

That is correct, and it will certainly be interesting to see a story about Gleipnir since it is a chain made of ‘impossible materials’, including, but not limited to:
            1. A woman’s beard (…that’s actually not impossible, right?)

            2. A fish’s… breath (…how?)
            3. A bird’s saliva (Don’t know much about bird, so I can’t say if this is impossible or not)
            4. A bear’s… nerve?
…I give up, but basically I can see an interesting story from it. …be it hilarious or horrific.

          • MinakoArisato

I see, well, that makes it rather… special.
But maybe they can change it a bit?

        • God

Dude, you simply can’t have that Username and a picture of Captain Falcon.

          • BalmungX

Why god ? Besides i tried to change my username once and it didn’t work, the username is too strong

          • God

Beacuse it’s an insult to both Kamina AND Captain Falcon.

          • BalmungX

Understood God ,i will change it

          • God

That’s more like it, see you in judgement day!

      • Aesma

Main SMT (1,2,Nocturne,IV) seems to focus on ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ vs ‘Army of Chaos’ and ‘Cult of Gaea’ (The Mothers). With Japanese myth and other myth as side quest characters (and Masakado).

Digital Devil Saga focus on Hindu myth.

Raidou Kuzunoha… well, seems like a mix?

Persona 1 and 2 are mix, Persona 3 is Greek myth and Persona 4 is Japanese myth.
If they are still going for ‘Hero who went to underworld and back’ like P3 and P4 (Orpheus and Izanagi), I’ll randomly guess that the next one might be Mesopotamian or Egyptian. And since Norse myth is well known, I guess Norse might be the one.

        • MinakoArisato

Hmmm egyptian… I never thought about that, to be honest. But I would like it. If it is still the Hero who went to the underworld”, maybe they will take some references from the Divine Comedy?
          Christian Mythology, so to say?

          • Aesma

Well… I guess that might happen. But that may go against their interpretation in main SMT, which may or may not cause fan backlash.

Personally I’m fine with that. Hoping they’ll add obscure angels such as Kamael and Seraphiel.

          • God

Christian Mythology? I don’t know… i mean, there’s not many gods in christian mythology, and going by the pattern, it’s going to have gods, lots of them.

          • MinakoArisato

Yep not many gods, but a lot of demons.

          • God

Yeah, but most of the main character’s personas in P3 and P4 where deities.

          • thrak

How stupid are you? Did you forget it is not only about gods?…50% of personas arent gods. Lucifer, the demon and game’s strongest persona is from christian mythology. As well as Michael, Gabriel, Metatron, Lilith, Abaddon, Incubus and many other angels and demons. Christian = angels and demons combined, demons would not exist if christian texts wouldnt describe them. First demons are even described in the Bible itself. Since it is SMT, demon-based series, saying such thing is a highest caliber of stupidity.

          • God

In persona 3 and 4, the majority of the main character’s personas were deities, and you shouldn’t assume short comments are as stupid as they sound to you, since you don’t know everything the author meant with his comment.

          • thrak

            No, you really are.
Lucifer is a stil a strongest persona in p3 and p4.

Christian not-deities of P4, fthe list (remind me if I forgot someone)
            Incubus
            Succubus
            Lilim
            Lilith
            Legion
            Abaddon
            Beelzebub
            Orobas
            Flauros
            Satan

            Lucifer
            Metatron
            Gabriel
            Michael
            Raphael
            Sandalphon
            Uriel

            Thats a lot.

And also a bit of non-deities from different mythologies: (not a full list)
            Mara (demon)
            Slime (chracter from another game)
            Yomotsu shikome (ghost)
            Nekomata (mythical creature)
            Yatagarasu (mythical creature)
            Alice (character)
            Jack Frost (spirit)
            Pixie (elf)
            High pixie (elf)
            Undine (mythical creature)
            Power (mythical creature)
            Virtue (mythical creature)
            Ghoul (mythical creature)
            Unicorn (mythical creature), ETC.

Just admit your defeat, lowly human who dares who call himself ‘God’. :)

          • God

You didn’t read anything i said, did you? I said, and i’m gonna use caps on this so you get it, ALMOST ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS FROM P3 AND P4 HAD DEITIES AS THEIR PERSONAS!!! Therefore, it’s safe to assume P5 is gonna do the same, lowly human who dares to defy the true God.

          • thrak

Why are you so sure it is going to use deities if half of mythology of SMT is non-deities? A lot of people said that it is going to be chained Fenrir, for example. Lucia, persona of Fuuka is a real christian saint not a goddess, Jiraiya – (Yosuke) mythical hero, Take-mikazuchi (Kanji) – mythical hero, Himiko (Rise) – mythical queen, Caesar (Akihiko) – real person, Polideuces (Akihiko) – mythical hero, Sukuna-Hikona (Naoto) – mythical creature, Artemisia (Mitsuru) – mythical heroine, Tomoe Gozen (Chie) – mythical heroine, Castor (Shinji) – mythical hero and I suppose Messiah is based on Jesus who is at least part human.
Don’t dodge the fact you didn’t know how big christian mythology is -this discussion began when you didn’t know anything about it and ignorantly said there is just a single god in it. Instead of admitting that you didnt know this, you keep dodging the question. By the way, the fact you keep repeating my insult to you after me fills me with such joy, human. You don’t have enough imagination to invent yours?… You should’ve paid more attention to personas the game is using and not to your waifu Chie, especially when her persona herself is not a goddess. You have enough confidence for a God, lowly human but not enough intelligence to back it up and thats what makes a real God. Goodbye, human.

          • God

Ok, let’s do this in order:
            - Susano-o (evolved jiraya), deity
            - Take-Mikazuchi, deity
            - Artemisia, my mistake (I believed it was just a different way of refering to Artemis)
            - Kanzeon (Evolved Himiko), deity
            - Sakuna-Hikona, a dwarf deity is still a deity
            - Castor and Pollux, i’ll give you this one, they’re only demi-gods.
            - Messiah, assuming he is based on Jesus (quite likely beacuse of his pierce resistence), he can either be Yehowah himself, his son, or a mere prophet depending on the religion.

After this, the fact remains that most Personas are deities, and i don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I know how big christian mythology is, i’ve studied it, and i studied judaism extensively (i find it way more interesting). And in Christianism, there is only one God, everything else is below god, that the whole point, there are lots of “mythical” creatures in Christianism, but only 1 god.

I heavily dislike using insults during internet arguments, so i just give back what you throw at me.

I played persona extensively, and while i use only the basic persona (just to prove that i can do it) in some playthroughs, i enjoy using as many personas as i can, fill the compendium, and select my favourite personas and then max them out.

I actually hate Chie, i couldn’t believe it when i heard such a thing as “The Church Of Chie” even existed!

How do you judge the intelligence on a person over an internet discussion?
Everyone is the god of his own world, and as far as anyone knows, in a world wih no impossibles and only improbables i might i actually be God.

          • Vallen

The Persona fans are so amazing! I always have a good time on forums or streams that are persona related. Even the comments are entertaining!

      • shane doherty

Welcome to the internet, where people have time machines to post fan art before the info is announced.

  • ShinobiBrown

But what if I’m not a fan of the new direction these games have been taking? I’m probably going to end up passing on this if they don’t make the dungeon crawl actually interesting this time around. The social link system is already tedious enough and feels like a chore for me since I hate dating sim elements. Hate to do it since I like Atlus but if dating sims are still pushed in this game while the dungeon crawl is STILL mediocre I’m probably going to drop this series.

    • TheCynicalReaper

The most interesting dungeon crawler for me was Nocturne.
I simply hope it doesn’t follow the same narrative formula that 3&4 did:
“HAHA I AM REALLY THE VILLAIN!”
“OH NO, BUT I AM ACTUALLY JUST BEING USED BY A BIG EVIL!”
“ARGH! I AM THE BIG EVIL WHO PARADOXICALLY WANTS TO DESTROY THE WORLD BY ADHEREING TO HUMAN DESIRES TO SAVE IT BY DESTROYING IT!”
“ARGOO! YOU HAVE DEFEATED ME! GOOD JOB!”
“Oh okay things are over, bye bye, Protagonist!”

Mankind is such a whiny bunch in the cosmos that Godly beings of death and destruction descend to grant their destructive wish just to shut ‘em up.

      • Lightdx Darkcloud

Get the notice. Almost every RPG has some villan who wants to destroy or conquer the world and you pretty often find the true villan is actually someone who appears only when you defeat the fake one.

    • http://www.spaghetti.com Kaisenex

      did u play persona 1 and 2?

      • ShinobiBrown

Yeah, and the dating sim elements weren’t there to annoy me.

    • Kumomeme

      its brilliant system to me
you can’t love it if you hate it
just be open minded…and always try new and unique things

      • ShinobiBrown

Dating sims aren’t for me. The very concept is not appealing to me. I’d much rather interact with real people than be forced to in a video game with fictional characters. I don’t play games that try to be life simulators.

        • Lightdx Darkcloud

Everyone has their tastes. But most people would probably say that it was the social link think that make the series so loved by the actual fans. They would not been exploting P3 and P4 so much other side. A lot people know Persona series even if they are not RPG fans. The only others cases there are Final Fantasy games (or they were since now FF is losing all its shinde)

    • shane doherty

Atlus makes many games. It’s not like you are betraying them if you don’t like the style of one of their game series. As much as I love most of the aspects of the Persona games, I can easily see why some wouldn’t love it.

      • ShinobiBrown

Of course they make many games. But mainline has been getting the shaft in favor of Persona, which I personally think isn’t the better franchise for a few reasons. If it wasn’t getting the shaft so badly, I don’t think many old school mainline SMT fans would be as bitter as they are now. But Persona has more casual appeal than mainline ever will and a lot of people apparently like dating sims so it’s getting pushed. The overall evolution of the Persona games is another thing. Persona wasn’t always about being a dating sim with RPG elements. That only started with 3 and then 4 happened and the entire atmosphere of the game pretty much changed. So when it comes to the people who got into Persona with 1 or 2, they now have to deal with a gameplay element that isn’t even a part of the jRPG genre but still integral to Persona’s new design (dating sims/visual novel). All in all, even Persona isn’t what it used to be. P5 might change that, but considering they want P3 and P4 fans to feel “at home” I have no real faith that it will.

        • SeventhEvening

I would have originally disagreed with you, since the Persona line can go into a new direction (that’s why we keep getting new Megaten lines) but I think the sudden burst of popularity Megaten has gotten has changed its DNA quite a bit. I was very disappointed with how easy and casual SMTIV was. Use money to recover from game overs, DLC to make grinding easy….. It’s not encouraging.

        • mc3027

Well it’s understandable that the Persona series is getting so much more attention than the other SMT games, seeing how it’s so popular. It works for people like me who prefer it over the other series, not that they’re bad or anything, I just like the design/battle system/characters of Persona better. Emphasis on battle system.

    • Hound

Well, they have yet to give us any information about what the game is like. We just have marketing messenges and an uninformative trailer.

Personally, I’m hoping that a majority of the playable maps would be deliberate this time around. The rogue-like dungeons of Personas 3 and 4 really had no more personality than the item world from Disgaea. In Persona 4, the item worlds had skins and music themes =/. But, hey, who knows. We have yet to see anything resembling anything impressionable from the game..

  • DarkLight

    Now,I have a reason to get a ps4.

Those glasses are TOO big. WAY too big. His eyes should be giant with lenses that big.
    But I am still excited!

    • Shippoyasha

It’s a fairly recent wraparound style glasses.

      • TheCynicalReaper

        Wait, really?

I wear glasses and honestly those things look cumbersome and embarrassing.
I used to have goggle-glasses like that when I was younger.

        • Ivan Rampengan

          have you seen Harry Potter?
and here i thought: The First Protag in Persona who will wield magic wand as Weapon XD

        • Shippoyasha

Yeah. It seems some older fashion trends are making a comeback, as are the turtle necks.

          • Vallen

            did somebody say turtle neck?

          • Lightdx Darkcloud

Well, they made P4 with the 80′s in their minds Catherine, P1 and P2 also have a retro design so it isn’t inpexpected, althought i would rather to have a more modern desing of characters like in P3.

Still even if that game had a more modern designg if you ask me Aigis still didn’t had anything to do with P3 it was and still it is more believable without her (and they knew she looked out of place)

          • Shippoyasha

Well to be fair, Aigis was meant to look out of place in the story after all. And it was a bold move to feature a robot and I think it did pay off in the end. I do think that the characters being in Tokyo will mean they will all be more modern in style. P4 was oldschool for sure, though they did have some modern spin on some of the design choices like the checkered and denim-stiching design. That was pretty nice.

It should be interesting to see if Yu comes back to Tokyo and what kind of clothing he will be wearing if the player can run into him in the streets.

          • Lightdx Darkcloud

I don’t really think it paid off. The P3 ending with her, the answer thing and the add of an other robot in Arena feels like a forced way to give her importance when she is out of the place in the setting/world. It would be easier to buy the story withour her. It was still endurable with the original end of P3, but the answer thing with Metis of all the things was too much to buy the story.

Still don’t get me wrong. I would not mind her at all if she were not forced in the story the way they did. It would have been a nice character to do a social link in FES and to have in the party.

          • Shippoyasha

To look at it another way, the only person who could take the protagonist for what he was without any baggage is a robot and I think that’s kind of poetic in a sense. I personally liked her a lot and I don’t think she was really a detriment though I can understand it’s not to the taste of every fan. I thought the Metis thing could have been better elaborated upon and I don’t think that was a lost cause either.

    • Vallen

The glasses come off during battles and he becomes superman

      • Lightdx Darkcloud

Man. Take my pen, you are better than me writing twist for stories than me. xD

    • SeventhEvening

Glasses like that are super common where I live. And the eyes would only appear giant if the lenses were very strong. Many of my students have fairly weak lenses and large glasses and look pretty normal.

  • Kevin Lima Ferreira

I’m curious to know how the “Red” theme will be in the game. Persona 3 was blue and 4 yellow and that was more than a simple choice of design for the menus.

    • God

It was? I don’t remember it being more than a design choice…

      • Kevin Lima Ferreira

Well, a lot of things in Persona 4 were yellow like the TV world, and even Inaba had that yellow glow most of the time. In Persona 3, the night is a major theme on the game and I think the blue resemble it, as well the protagonist hair. What I mean is, since the protagonist doesn’t have anything on him that resemble the color red, I’m curious to know what is going to be “red” on this game apart from the menus and other things..

        • mc3027

Agreed. The lighter color choice reflected the happier atmosphere of the game, whereas the more somber blue color scheme of Persona 3 reflected the darker story.

        • God

Ah, that’s what you meant. Yu didn’t have anything yellow on him, so it’s probably gonna be something like the backrounds and overall color palette, howeber, what i am curious about, is that if yellow was day, an blue was night, what is red? Dusk? Sunrise? Red moon?

          • Kevin Lima Ferreira

I was thinking it could be dusk as well.. Anyway, we should wait for more trailers!

    • Vallen

In P3 the uniform was blue and in P4 the TV world was yellow-ish, otherwise the only point to the color was the menu design. It’s probably the same here, the menus will be red and the buttons on his uniform are red, I doubt there will be any more significance to the color beyond that

      • Kevin Lima Ferreira

The protagonist from Persona 3 had blue hair and in Persona 4, the TV world was yellow and Inaba had a yellow glow. But since the protagonist from Persona 5 doesn’t have anything really “red” on him, I’m curious to know what will be majory red in this game… Maybe the “other world” from this game will be red.

        • Lightdx Darkcloud

The characters doesn’t matter in that. It is the setting when they draw the world there. They did it in P3 (can be seen in the opening) it was then when they made the main character with blue hair and since they did that then is when they probably decided to make Yukari with the Pink palette (art book) and later Aigis Yellow.

When they begon to draw P4 they draw the setting based in the 80′s they used yellow since it is close to gold, the color those years represent for them.

I think that in P5 the world really was draw and inspired for the red color. This game it was said to be more about want to be free from chains and the hardships in a big and populate city. Red would be perfect for that.

          • Kevin Lima Ferreira

Makes sense.. Even so, I believe there will be something else of strong impact with the red color apart from the menus and logos, etc.

    • Hound

In the trailer, there’s this flash of red before the time stop and aura-covered monster. Perhaps that means that the main game will have a lot of features similar to the non-green coffin portions of Persona 3.

OH! *fanatical theorizing* maybe it takes place before 3 and we’ll see the cause for everyone ending up in coffins in the midnight hour? If the trailer is taken 100% seriously, it could be that the game has a Shakugan no Shana effect that happens when monsters wreak havok. Perhaps this is somehow contained and moved to the midnight hour to prevent mass upset?

Then Persona 3 happens when the protection stops working?

      • Kevin Lima Ferreira

That’s an interesting idea! I guess we will have to wait for more trailers of the game to know!

  • http://guillotineghosties.tumblr.com Ghosties

If no fem protag, I’m done.

    • Sav

      sexist much.

    • Snorlaxation

I’m hoping for a FeMC option too, but even more so, I’m hoping for a bigger variety of characters. I don’t want the whole team to be high schoolers again. I was banking on that rumor about the character being in college, but oh well.

      • Digidyne017

But this time around it looks like the protagonist could be in college.

        • Snorlaxation

          Keeping my fingers crossed. ;)

          • Vallen

He looks a bit older. If he is in school, maybe he graduates and enters college midway through the game or something? That would be cool

      • Lightdx Darkcloud

I think it is better for the story thing if they have only a canon protagonist here (Male please) and then they do something like P3P where you can have a female one no canon and see an other perspective. It could also works two twins where you can chose which is the main.

        • Snorlaxation

I suppose for the sake of time and having a good story uncompromised, then yeah, I agree with you. I dunno though. If I absolutely had to choose, I would’ve picked a female MC this time. But unless this Protag they’ve shown is transgender or just very boyish, then it’s another dude MC. I just want something different with this one, something more with regards to him, or the story, or even the gameplay, something new. Not sure what though….

    • https://twitter.com/LLCoolOyd Lloyd

That’s a dumb reason to be done with an entire series.

    • Twilleppac

They’ll probably have the option if they ever do like a P3P or P4 Golden equivalent.

  • Sav

now make another digital devil saga type game.

    damnit atlus.

    • mckun

      More SMT Nocturne please first.

      • Sav

meh there already is a smt 4 on 3ds.

i’d rather a new dds spin off or the likes for ps4.

        • mckun

          >Wants a SMT Nocturne III
          >Game that had Hitoshura appear in DDS so wouldn’t mind a crossover
          >SMT 4 is already on 3DS.

Wat. Is Hitoshura in that game too?

      • SeventhEvening

Nocturne is a perfect complete story. There’s no way to continue Nocturne without ruining it.

        • mckun

I didn’t say continue. I would like a remake to that game in general. Like P4G (without Marie/etc.) but with more demons, Raidou and Dante in the same game or in HD, and extended endings. Some of the endings was basically “Blah blah blah x is happy.”

Don’t have to really change it. Considering that they remade Desu 2 and Desu 1 I would like to see DDS AND SMTIII both redone and remastered.

          • SeventhEvening

I wouldn’t mind an HD re-release, and I’d definitely buy it, but that game definitely doesn’t need to get remade again. Twice was enough. That P4G version was the “Maniax” version. Then there was the “Chronicle” version with more content. I’d rather them focus on something new. I’d like to see a return of Majin Tensei or a proper Devil Summoner again.

  • HarakiriKami

Ah Aniplex made the persona anime? That’s sony’s studio no?

    love the uniform

  • Snorlaxation

I’m still holding out hope that not everyone on the team will be in high school.
Other than that, finally having something to watch for P5 is making me feel so giddy. Yu Shirogane-Potter is lookin’ pretty snazzy in that possibly prep school uniform.

    • Vallen

I think it might be a prep school and maybe they will transition to college in the 2nd year of the game? (who knows, the story might be longer than 1 year)

      • Mr.Sammich

Seeing as there is a big 2 on his uniform, I very much doubt that he’s in a prep-school. And what is with people wanting Persona to go to college? Persona has had a high-school setting since the first game, and it’s main audience is still high-schoolers, the people who actually have free time to play video-games.

        • Vallen

I think people want a college setting because they want a more mature protagonist/group of friends in the game. Furthermore, it’s a little boring when every game is in the same setting (so people are thinking of ways it can innovate). And finally, do you have a source for that statement about the main audience? Everyone I knew or know now who play persona are well out of high school (online and offline)

          • Mr.Sammich

A character being a high-schooler doesn’t mean they can’t be mature, Mitsuru proves that. Besides there are plenty of mature social-links, just look at Bunkichi and Mitsuko, any more mature than that and you’re into skeleton territory. And personally, I’ve yet to be bored by anything in Persona, the characters are all interesting and I don’t think a college campus would be any more exciting than any other place of learning. You have wacky teachers, you’d have wacky professors, and your day would progress automatically the same as it does already. It would be nothing but a name change.

I wonder where you got the information about the main audience…although a big portion of JRPGs are aimed to a young audience you can’t ignore the fact that Persona isn’t a new franchise and the latest “main line” instalment was released back in 2008, so the ones that played the game back then are now pretty much adults, probably college students, that’s why a lot of people want a college setting.

          • Mr.Sammich

Well the main thing is that I doubt any Japanese student going to college would actually take time to play video-games, seeing how SUPER FUCKING SERIOUS they take higher education there. And to me, high-school is the optimal setting for Persona, as the games focus a lot on emotion and relationships. A person is never so emotional or concerned about their relationships as they are in high-school, they seem to become less important during and after college. I am confident in that statement.

I really like the new MC and the trailer, but am I the only one that thinks that logo is terrible?! It reminds me of a racing game instead of a JRPG! Hope they change it before the game’s release.

    • mc3027

YES. For some reason Gran Turismo keeps coming to mind whenever I see it.

      • Mr.Sammich

People keep making that comparison but I just can’t see that, the GT logo has the letters all mashed together with the G being part of the T’s top and P5′s logo just has the P interlocking into the 5′s loop. Personally, it kinda reminds me of a 70′s anime style, for some reason.
At the end of the day, you only have to see the logo when you open the box and when you turn on the game, which for me will only be once ever.

I trust him and the team completely. Delays are always unfortunate, but in the long run, quality is what matters. Considering the length of persona games, I think it is worth the wait to get a polished solid game that will last us many hours (and years!) in the future. Take your time and I look forward to more news in the near future!! (^ . ^)/

    • Hound

I want to assume that the delay is to make room for the PS4 port.

If someone were to bet me money, I’d bet that the PS4 port wouldn’t be very special and the two versions would be rather comparable, with the PS4 seeming to get the short end of things.

(for most companies, I’d assume that the PS3 version would have bugs and movement/graphical staggering. But it seems like PS3 development has been going on for a while.)

  • Random_Hero

    Dem new waifus.

    • Kaetsu

I need to know who the Lovers Arcana is!

      • Hound

        The new Yukari/Rise?

Hm.. I’m personally interested in the new Sun & Hermit. The arcanas are bound to be an interesting part of the story. Especially with their intended theme.

        • Kaetsu

          Also the new Lisa :)

          • Hound

            Lisa had a tarot?

          • Jey

            Lisa from silent hill?

wont be surprised if her tarot card is Death. lol..

      • Lightdx Darkcloud

Yehaa i’m dying to know that. I hope i liked as much or more than the previous lovers :)

  • thnkgod4mentlillness

I just hope there’s more dungeon crawling than there was in P4…

    • mc3027

NO PLEASE. I just hate dungeon crawlers. c:

      • thnkgod4mentlillness

        Then don’t play Persona.

        • mc3027

I’m nooooot quite sure I would classify the series (at least the last two – particularly the last one) as dungeon crawlers. Okay, well, at least it seems like they’ve clearly moved from that direction, which is good for me, but I guess not for you.

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

They’re absolutely dungeon crawlers. All five released Persona games are dungeon crawlers, and I’m betting P5 will be too.

          • Sada Dasa

isnt dungeon crawler are games like unchained blades.
class of heroes and those kinds
i dont really know persona is a dungeon crawling style
i think persona is really good rpg ._.
and believe me those games are hard…
unlike persona its much more … ~
enjoy able and fast to get use to it

          • Jey

wrong. P3 and 4 are technically J-rpg’s with turn based battles. NOT dungeon crawlers.

But i believe what you’re trying to say is that they have badly designed dungeons, that are mostly random and repetitive, especially Persona 3.. tartarus was probably the worst part about the game

  • Anontastic

    …And then what?

  • Yuuki

why does that would make him more wierd? you know whar ROLEPLAY means?

  • Ali

Haha I’m looking forward to main’ing Wii Fit Trainer in Super Smash Bros. 4, does that make me weird: ;p

  • mc3027

Uh, I will say that often I pick the female option, despite being male myself, because I want male romance options. But I’m gay, so…

  • Federico

I think they mean it’s weird because he only wants to play as a female.

  • Ni ~Algidus~
