Dead or Alive 5: Last Round Will Introduce A New Female Character

By Sato . September 30, 2014 . 10:28am

Team Ninja are developing the latest version of Dead or Alive 5, titled Dead or Alive 5: Last Round for current and previous generation consoles. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine shares a little on what the new title will feature. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round will be the final entry in the Dead or Alive 5 series, so it will include content from previous versions of the game as well as some new stuff for fans to look forward to.

According to the magazine report, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round will introduce a new female character. The report emphasizes that this isn’t a returning character from the series.

The new female character is also being developed using Koei Tecmo’s new “Soft Engine,” which is the name given to their new engine that was made to better depict the “softness” and “warmth” of a character’s body.

Additionally, there will also be a new male character, but Famitsu’s report doesn’t specify whether he’s a recurring character or not. Dead or Alive 5: Last Round will also have additional hairstyles, and the return of “The Danger Zone” stage from Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2.

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is slated for release in Japan and the West sometime in Spring 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. DLC purchased from Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate on previous generation consoles will be transferable to current generation consoles as well.

Then we gotta get a Very Last Round to finalize her being added into the Ultimate collection.

  • Brimfyre

    What about new Story mode???

  • Digidyne017

Hopefully there will be a vita announcement.

    I want my T and A on the go…

  • Strawberry Starlet

“The new female character is also being developed using Koei Tecmo’s new “Soft Engine,” which is the name given to their new engine that was made to better depict the “softness” and “warmth” of a character’s body.”

…….Remember when they said they wanted to dial back the fanservice? lolno.

    • Stephen Mc Devitt

Maybe on the breasts but that just means anything else goes, so this one will for the skin fetishists(?)

    • samsneeze

I remember fans telling them that was a bad idea and that they said they would listen to the feedback. That combined with the plethora of DLC costumes, it seems to me that they’ve realized something obvious.

      • Strawberry Starlet

Oh yeah definetly. I was basically just saying that that dialing down idea was quietly passed over a looooooong time ago haha.

  • For the person who hasn’t bought any interation of this game will enjoy this.

For the person who bought Ultimate and the DLC, would they want to splash more money just for two extra characters and a few extras?

I can understand why some people rarely buys game from day one and wait for price drops or GotY editions. And why some games sell below expectation. I think many would be wary with a DoA 6 title if gets the same treatment as 5.

    • Tran67

I’ll be buying it again. For me, it’s worth it with the new characters and not to mention that my cousins are getting it with me.

Also Last Round is sorta meant for the current gen. PS3 and 360 get it as a digital copy and at a slightly cheaper price. Forgot what it was though.

      • Awesome! I hope you and your cousin will enjoy the new additions.

I just hope it is the “last.” :D

        • Tran67

I think it is the last one. I saw an interview somewhere saying that Last Round was pretty much made for two reasons: because people wanted to play it on next/current gen consoles(X1, PS4) and so that they could learn how to program on the X1 and PS4. It’s so that they can work on DOA6

    • D H

You seem like you kind of get and are missing the point at the same time? This isn’t necessarily being made for people who bought and own DOA5U and the DLC. If you do, great, you can transfer your DLC and have the game with updated graphics, more upcoming new content, and two new characters. Or, if you don’t want to, fine. This is more for A.) people that haven’t bought the game in previous incarnations, and B.) to get development experience on the new hardware. There is no better way to learn how to develop games for the new systems than to take an already completed game and make it run. Sure, they aren’t going to learn all kinds of fancy new tricks and whatnot, but it gets them all the basic experience needed, and as a bonus, they can sell what they worked on to make money for the time spent basically training themselves.

Also, yes, price drops and GotY versions are becoming more common. I don’t see that as a bad thing either. Sure, if you buy it day one you’re paying more money than people that get it 6 months or a year later. However, you’re also playing it for 6 months or a year longer than those people. It’s no different than buying a 2014 model car today or waiting a few years for it to come down in price, or any other similar product. Yes, you spent more money, but it’s silly to think that something’s value would never go down.

      • I have no (real) qualms with any company taking their product and porting it to another console, past or current, for whatever purpose they envision. You say it doesn’t concern them but it does – going out of the way to pick up the same game a second or third time for additional chcaracters and/or features.

Concerning point B, that is a developer’s concern not a consumer one. I’m just look at it from a consumer’s point-of-view, that’s all.

Even with the hands-on experience of developing for a new current gen console, wouldn’t the next instalment make consumers wary about whether or not to pick up the title if they could correctly predict that there is a better one down the line?

    • Death Metal

I’m not sure how much “lonely” I am on this, but apart from the extras, which to me are totally a bonus, I will be getting this solely because this will be a current gen game (PS4, in my case). I admit to being a total graphics whore and I want to experience one of my favorite games ever the best way it can be presented. I am a perv at heart and that means I want to see all those hundreds of panties in the highest quality possible, and that also means I expect to see much better geometry in certain areas and if at all feasable, no aliasing at all. We got an outstading game last gen, but many things were hampered by the limited hardware it was running on. I am not only a perv, but also a fan of almost every fighting game ever developed, and the fact that DOA5 also excels in that aspect easily made that game very dear to me. Outstanding art and awesome gameplay – it screams for a PS4/X1 release.

      There, I said it. :P

    • Black Heaven

As I only bought the first iteration, buying “Last” Round on the PS4 is a big win for me.
      • From my perspective, I get a dozen new characters (8 from DOA5U plus the expected new characters for “Last” Round).
      • Another would be the next gen graphics update, can’t deny that.
      • Then some *hopefully* free costumes bundled with the purchase.
      • And best of all, PS4 Photo Mode!! Please please pleeease?

  • John Hayabusa

    Momiji – best boobs.
    Rachel – best butt.

Anyway, this hopefully final version is going well. I am really hoping that it includes all DLCs before it, though.

    • Death Metal

Best boobs for me would be either Ayane’s or Tina’s. Rachel gets best butt indeed. Momiji’s so cute though!

    • doubleO7

At the very least it will include all costumes and DLC from vanilla DOA5 and DOA5+, all non-DLC costumes from Ultimate, and some new costumes. That’s what’s confirmed right now. Since they’re still releasing costumes for 5U, I get the feeling we’ll only get some of it’s DLC on-disc, especially since it will be transferable. If it was all on-disc, there would be little point in the transfer feature.

    • Spidermang

I think Hitomi has best butt

  • CptPokerface

They really struck gold with DOA5. I don’t think I’ve seen any other game in the series get updated and supported this much. With a new look and improved game mechanics I suppose it was only natural.

I really appreciate that they no longer look like barbie dolls anymore.

    • Vesperion

That’s because DLC didn’t exist yet

      • Death Metal

To be fair, the framework for DLC was there for DOA4 as well, albeit not all that developed yet. But I think the new look, new mechanics and non-exclusivity were the more influent factors for the success of the 5th entry.

        • Vesperion

Tecmo is making BANKROLL off some costumes. It would be silly for them not to keep supporting the game.

      • CptPokerface

I doubt DLC alone could have helped DOA5 sell as much as it has, no matter how good it could be. It looks and plays the best hands down and has a healthy selection of new faces. All the extra costumes and whatnot are icing on the cake.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

“Soft Engine” – nothing to do with soft core of course. :)

I will be waiting to see exactly what they do with this game since I already own the first version and all DLC is transferable (I was hoping there would be a inclusion of some in this game). Happy they are starting to take the leap to this gen though.

  • z_merquise

This is nice for me since I only got the vanilla but not the Ultimate.

Why can’t they just turn this to an upgrade for people who bought DOA 5 Ultimate and a retail for those who wanted to jump-in to the game like Capcom did with Super Street Fighter IV to Ultra version.

But I guess Capcom might sue them again for that.

  • OutlawStar26ep

1 new female fighter. There goes my hopes that Asuka and Homura would show up as guest fighters. Well theres still a chance that Kasumi and Ayane will show up as dlc in a Senran Kagura game.

    • zferolie

They only said so far. Doesn’t mean they can add more as guests.

  • Apple pie?

  • Pheria

This confirms it. Rapidash is a fighter.

    Hug it…when…sleeping…warm and cuddly…spectacular…

  • Boobs are soft and warm

    • As are butts.

      • Crimrui

Yeah, but it’s nicer to put your head between boobs then butt cheeks. Or so the legend says…

        • A nice soft tush works just as well.

          • David García Abril

The problem is that in that area you risk being exposed to… gas leaks…

And I’m totally NOT talking from experience… :$

          • No biggie! Girls don’t fart /s. This conversation is heading into strange territory if it hasn’t already been there…

    • Brimfyre

Boobs are nothing but fake asses.

    • NeptuniasBeard

You honestly think THAT was what they week referring to. C’mon, this is Tecmo were talking about. Masters of subtlety!

  • Thomaz Barros

    >Soft Engine

    Youmu confirmed

  • Hinataharem

She is probably made of fresh sponge cake

    • Godmars

I find your avatar highly appropriate with your comment…

  • persona_yuji

WHAT!? A new FEMALE character in DoA!? T.This is preposterous!

  • GibbRS

I wonder if it’ll be one of the Fatal Frame heroines, since Ayane is going to guest star in Fatal Frame V. I can’t lie, I’d like to kick some butt as Miyu. Maybe the new male character will be Yukimura Sanada from Samurai Warriors.

  • sunK1D

Obviously one of the girls from Senran Kagura is making the cross over.
Probably Asuka and she will have the same height as Marie Rose.

    • doubleO7

I dunno, that would be quite the visual change to go from an anime-like character to a realistic one. If they have to put basically just as much work into redesigning and modeling an existing character as they do a brand new one, then why not just make a completely new one? I’m not expecting any more than costumes from their SK collaboration.

      • sunK1D

They specified the use of the new “soft engine” for this character. I think that’s a good giveaway.

        • doubleO7

…and? So the new girl is guaranteed to show off lots of cleavage. That’s not very surprising? I don’t see how that can be taken as an indication of a guest character though. They could show off the same amount of skin with another original character, like they just did with Nyotengu and her barely-covering-her-boobs kimono a few weeks ago.

    • Death Metal

Why “obviously”? I think the collaboration announced has probably more to do with costumes, no? It makes sense for VF fighters to be in DOA. Does that make as much sense for SK characters? I don’t know, they seem too much “girly-girly” for the DOA lore/universe.

      • WhyWai

Both involve Ninja. Can’t say it’s impossible.

        • zaidandzhadow

don’t forget about the boob-centric ideas

        • Death Metal

Not impossible at all, just not really obvious, I would say. But true, the possibility is always there. Just doesn’t seem like it to me.

  • Maxwell3000

I’ve been playing 5 Ultimate like a fiend so new characters and even sharper graphics? Take my Money.

  • malaki7123 .

Please come to PC. Please come to PC. Please come to PC…

  • fairysun

I want Capoeira or Pencak Silat as her martial art. Not another ‘cool ninjutsu style’.

  • Haqua du lot Herminium

Waiting for magazine scan i hope they showed her concept art or something.

  • Poked

I want to see a picture of the new character, and I wonder what kind of fighting style she will has. Well, guess I just have to wait and see

  • Blati. Boyu.

A girl with pink hair ala Lightning please.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

      Ayane v2~?

      • Blati. Boyu.

Ayane has purple-ish/lavande hair. It’s not proper pink.

  • Crimrui

Let’s see if it can top Nyotengu. I’m currently bedazzled with that character.

  • Haqua du lot Herminium

    Maybe Boxing fighting style?

    • RoyalR R.M

      If not, that mila.

      • Ixbran

Mila is a mixed martial artist. So we technically don’t have a character that soly specializes in Boxing.

  • Yan Zhao

Still waiting for Irene playable from NInja Gaiden 2 and 3.

And “soft engine” huh? Fitting name for this game’s engine indeed.

  • KazukiNanbu

two new characters but no one cares about the male character and the males characters in general…with the exception of the kickass ninja hayabusa, anyway i hope the new characters are not ninjas

  • Digidyne017

Hopefully this new female character will be tribal-esque like Elena from SF..

  • Ms_Fortune

Hopefully its a lady with a large posterior and all of her combat abilities revolve around butt slams and butt attacks.

  • Sean ‘Geg’ Reddie

    How surprising.

  • Ixbran

“Oh wow. a new female character. that’s so ‘unexpected’. I am genuinely surprised by this. Oh please. Tell us more. About this mysterious new female character.”

And if you can’t tell yet, that’s all sarcasm. But seriously tho, Team Ninja needs to stop all this BS with adding new female characters just so they have another set of breasts to scantly dress up. I bet they don’t even put in effort to their back stories or personalities. I imagine their development process is somehting along the lines of:

TN: “heres a new set of tits and a hot chick to go with them!”

    Employe: “Whats her back story?”

TN: “Hell if I know, just make something up.”

Employe: “Oh alright. Any idea what it should be?”

TN: “I don’t give a fuck, just make sure its not too complex. We don’t want fans actually thinking about her personality or back story. It’d distract from the tits.”

    Its so fucking stupid

    • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

I… approve of this. Boobs never failed me before.

      • Ixbran

It was a satire, I am stating that Tecmo’s desire to make female characters , whose only purpose is fan service, is stupid and getting old and tiresome. They aren’t bothering to give any of their new female characters any form of development outside of “boobs” and I’m getting sick of it.

        • Death Metal

Oh yes, so they have an obligation to male characters now just because they have filled your fucking stupid imaginary quota of females.

God, get a grip. Go visit the studio. Spend a day or two with the devs. Get to know the creative process of creating a new character – hell, of developing an AAA game at all. Get to know and respect the audience of the game they are selling to. Get to know and respect the history and background of the game and the team involved in its creation. Then, and only then, you can come and spill your diminutive bullshit about how stuff happens. Here’s your own advice: if you want a game modeled to your own vision, go do like these guys and make your fucking own instead of coming here and pointing fingers on what people should or should not enjoy.

          • Lloyd Christmas

            *Slow clap*

Brownie points for dat Terry avatar.

          • Death Metal

Thanks. He edited his response though. Now it looks like I’m raging without much reason.

Whatever. All this moral judgment is just really pissing.

          • Zurashii

            GET SERIOUS

          • Death Metal

            OH BUT I AM

          • ShadowDivz

With a name like Death Metal, i don’t know why i’m surprised you brought the pain.

        • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

Lol, so hurt. I was trying to be funny. I normally don’t troll, just trying it out for a change.

You make valid points. Same thing I’ve been saying about the anime Funimation has been picking up. Fanservice, Fanservice, Fanservice is all they’ve been doing. Anime in general these days are filled with females with questionable proportions. They can all jump high and move fast with 50 pound cans. Makes no sense. What is plot? Not what I’m getting these days lol.

Also, sad people play dating sims, don’t group me in with them. My life isn’t that sad lol.

          • Ixbran

I apologize, I honestly thought you were being serious. Sarcasm is so hard to detect on the internet unless its pointed out.

          • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

            It’s all good fam.

        • raymk

Of all the series why are you complaing about the series where it makes since to make fan-service females lol. They are making a new male character as well(or bringing back one) Its only getting tiresome to people who probably don’t even play the games. If you’re getting sick of it there’s other fighting games to play bro.

          • Ixbran

Thing is though they wanted to stop. When DoA5 was announced the developers even stated in an interview that they wanted to tone down the sexuality. However when the game was sent out for beta testing, players complained about the lack of jiggle physics. You can easily see this in the new character Mila, who in the base game, has very normal and modest clothes.

But because of the complaints and the negative ratings their beta was getting, they had to bring back the sexual aspects because they didn’t want to risk losing sales. Its because of perverts like you that DoA5 is being held back as a respectable fighting game.

which sucks because it’s obvious they put a lot of hard work and effort into DoA5’s complexity and the characters fighting prowess, but all people seem to know or relate to the DoA series is its fan-service. A lot people are getting tired of it, my self included.

          • raymk

I know the story, but just the same its because of people like us that the series was even selling in the first place. And again if you are getting tired of it go play something else, its quite easy to do. A lot of people always say they get tired of things but those are the one’s that never buy the crap in the first place.

It makes no sense to get rid of something that was part of the selling point of the series since day 1, tell me another series that has gotten rid of its trademark and was successful? Oh that’s right next to none.

If you had a problem with the fan-service then why the hell were you playing the series anyway? If you wanted a serious fighting game there were plenty others like soul calibur or tekken if 3d is what you wanted. I understand your pain somewhat, but tell me this, why would it make sense to drop something that started in the series and put it on the map?

          • ShadowDivz

Damn dude, you really laid it on.

But it’s true. People who usually complain about fanservice were never buying it to begin with. And if the beta got negative feedback because they toned down the sexuality, then it literally makes no sense to remove it.

            Im buying you cookies!

          • Shippoyasha

It’s wrong to just tell people off as perverts like that. It’s really not called for. For one, it is a fighting game, not a story oriented RPG or anything. Fighting game characters often are designed from the looks and premise first, characterizations and back history second. People weren’t rallying for anything other than keeping up with the fun factor of the series, not for it to be mired in an overly serious story and style (Tekken 4 is a great example of that. It was antithesis to the more freewheeling and fun based style the series is known for with the bigger emphasis on stage utilization and paring down the character roster).

And you are not making any sense in saying the game isn’t a ‘respectable’ fighting game because it has sexual elements. The combat has never been better in a DOA game as it is in DOA5, the balance is one of the best the series has ever seen, and for once, you can’t abuse counters anymore (which wasn’t a thing since DOA1 and 2).

          • Ixbran

I know that the combat for the DoA Games has never been better. I’m just saying most people don’t remember or acknowledge it for that. Most people simply know it for its skimpy, water-balloon titty, female characters. You ask anyone whos never played the game series, they are like “That fighting game with the hot chicks right?”

This series is best known for its scantly clad female characters, not its in-depth fighting mechanics or the back story, which is a damned shame since the story is pretty decent as far as fighting game stories go.

          • Shippoyasha

Well, haters will hate. There’s really nothing that can be done with some people. Some people just won’t be convinced. It’s even worse with Arcana Heart where people hurl all sorts of insults even though that game is arguably one of the most technical 2D fighters out there. For what it’s worth, Team Ninja excels at making cute/sexy female characters in action/fighting games. I think losing their niche is going to be really devastating when they can’t really rely on non fighting fans to pick them up. It’s like when they made Ninja Gaiden 3 story-based to lure in non fans and that was disastrous.

          • Slayven19

The game backstory isn’t really that good, people know the backstory but like most fighters the stories aren’t well written so I don’t really care about them. But why do you care why someone else likes the game? Does people interest have to match your own? Obviously people play for everything the game has to offer else they could just play another fighter because they all have hot chicks.

    • Axle

Can you say, new fighting game character? lol Most people are just excited about the roster increasing, thus more characters to play and potentially enjoy. Tits are* just icing on the delicious (puns welcome) cake.

    • MrTyrant

But DOA had some great “back stories” (*wink*) and I think the new will do just fine lol

      • Axle

    • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Being the guy who played DOA series, I do know for a fact that there’s was plenty of those “physics” in there, but it never bother me, I was in it to just to have fun. And before you say anything, I know you had to have seen other fighting games who have gotten away with much worse fanservice. Heck the art for each character just spells it for a female if you notice her clothes, especially her cleavage hanging out. DOA isn’t the first who got away with lots of fanservice, even now there’s still some fighter games that still get away with it.
Of course, the moment the fanservice kicked in for DOA, anybody whose played and told their friends, and are still alive even now, already expects that much. And if it wasn’t DOA, it was some other fighting game. I’m no pervert, but at the same time, sex appeal still rings out to many people, not just in video games either. You got at least appreciate the team’s initial consideration to toning down the sexuality. Ever since Itagaki left Tecmo after various issues I don’t completely know of, they had to figure out how to do this thing without him.
I know you didn’t intend to have a couple of replies on you, you were just trying to be clear in your case that DOA isn’t serious enough to be a competitive fighting game without fanservice all over it, and you were only displaying your gripe about it. You still enjoy the game right, just don’t pay too much attention to the fanservice much as possible. As for the other guys, well their replies were harsh, and all that cussing and butt hurt stuff in my eyes makes them like little kids despite their intentions. Sorry to those reading this, but even if you know somebody is a bit in the wrong, try to let up on the cussing and not put him on blast because you felt wronged about his gripe.

  • sakanaとkoeda

    It’s a trap!

  • Dave Cain

live action doa… i know kinda random

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

    I hope it’s a catgirl!

  • Nameless App 1989

    Hope it’s Rio!

  • WhyWai

I hope they make a version without the male characters. :D

  • Isuke-sama

I hope there will be a Create a character mode. Hey if DW/SW and Soul Calibur have one. Why not DOA?

    • Axle

Because you’d be fighting a pair of enormous, round, gelatinous orbs with a single dot in each center in every lobby.

      • Isuke-sama

lol after SC5, I can see that happen. But let’s be positive a little shall we? Well at least DW/SW edit didn’t go that far. Or TecmoKoei could pull an edit mode similar to Tekken Tag edit mode.

        • Axle

Hahah, I just found the thought of fighting a pair of giant breasts to be hilariously appropriate is all XD
Joking aside, I do think a character creation mode would be cool ^__^ I’m sure half the entertainment would be from seeing the masterpieces people come up with lol

    • doubleO7

That almost seems like too significant an addition for an update like LR. More likely to happen in DOA 6, or at least a costume/color editor.

    • Death Metal

We have seem in SoulCalibur that, by doing that, you make the actual characters of the series completely expendable. There is no need for, say, Kasumi to exist in a game/world where you are free to create your own “Kasumi”… They might as well go the full route and make a new “make-your-own-character” fighting game franchise with a character creation mode and no need for stabilished characters at all.

I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but, while it gives more freedom to the player, it makes the creative vision of the development team rather irrelevant. Personaly I see it as a different proposal entirely and probably something more suited for a different game. But there’s definitely a market for that.

  • “The new female character is also being developed using Koei Tecmo’s new “Soft Engine,” which is the name given to their new engine that was made to better depict the “softness” and “warmth” of a character’s body.”

Creepy way to phrase it, but it sure is effective! Everyone pre-DOA5 just look like Real Dolls. They did a damn fine job on the engineering for DOA5 (and Ninja Gaiden Σ2/3/Razor’s Edge and Fatal Frame: The Black-Haired Shrine Maiden), and they’re gonna have some fine looking games going forward.

Wow, I thought for sure it was gonna be a male character, or if it was a female character they wouldn’t be sexually advertized……That was sarcasm :P

  • Intresting, though I’ll only end up playing as Ayane <3

  • Hound

I only played Dead of Alive 2. Does 5 still have the explosive walls and painful looking shenanigans or is it like Beach Vollyball’s characters in Virtua Fighter 4?

    • GibbRS

DOA5 does have a lot of destructible environments.

  • Hero

We need a chick with a big @ss. Boobs are always nice, but I’d like to see those jiggle physics on a bum for once.

Sorry, I mean nooo!!! We need more plot! ^^’

    • Hound

New character is an elderly woman with muscular arms that have jiggle physics

      • Hero

        This will suffice…

  • Darkrise

We need a character with more hometown.

    • Mnstrzero00

      Preach it brother!

  • Zahar Gul

    NEW FAP……

  • Nisx

    Get your hand ready:
Dead or Alive 5: Last round will introduce
    a new female character……….

  • Skylark

Oh what! Danger Zone returns! I was in that stage like all the time. A lot of good stages was in DOA2…New characters are good too…

This is a F+CKING SHAME!! DoA 5, DoA U and now DoA 5 LR; and none of them let’s you upgrade your disc, meaning you have to resell a worthless, useless dvd almost for free… At least CapCom let’s you upgrade SSF4 to SSF4AE and to USF4 via dlc. Sorry Tecmo, but I’ve had enough of it. No wonder why you ain’t never gonna make it to EVO while (even!!) TTT2 does… ;_(
