Here’s Marvel’s Own “Injustice” Style Fighting Game For Smartphones And Tablets

By Ishaan . October 14, 2014 . 12:29pm

While DC has Injustice: Gods Among Us on PC and consoles, Marvel’s own comic book fighting game is being released on smartphones and tablets. Titled Marvel Contest of Champions, the game is being developed by Kabam, a company that specializes in free-to-play games.

Free-to-play games tend to be frowned upon by a certain crowd, but Marvel games have a pretty good track record, judging by Spider-Man Unlimited and Marvel Puzzle Quest. Both of those games have depth below the surface, and hopefully Contest of Champions will, too.

Marvel Contest of Champions is scheduled for release sometime this December.

I wish they had something like this for consoles. I like spider-man unlimited but I just prefer gaming on a system. Wish game companies were more open to making ported versions to the 3ds like in Japan with puzzles and dragons.

  • SobriK

The fact that Wolverine and Mega Beedrill are in the same pose amuses me far more than it should.

  • Mikari✘

Still waiting for the day Marvel will step up on the gaming industry. We’ve had recently Marvel Heroes, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes and the Disney Infinity stuff… One is an MMO and the others are casual games (and very fun!)

I wish we could get something along the lines of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It’s one of the best Marvel games to date both in gameplay and story.

Contest of Champions looks promising though. Shame I don’t have a tablet or a good smartphone to run it. Hope it gets released on PC eventually.

I’m really digging the style they are using, they have a “plastic” feel to them, that makes them look like action figures, at least in my eyes, and I’m digging the representation of the characters. Except that they are using Movie/2014 Peter J. Quill instead of his 2008 incarnation >_>, but I prefer this Gamora to the older ones though,
I’d prefer if they gave us a “real” fighting game on consoles.

    There was a woman in Spidey’s suit….

  • Marvel Alliance is what I want and developed by Raven Software but doubt that will ever happen. Closet thing to a Marvel Alliance is Marvel Heroes which I play time from time.

Not big on gaming on my shitty Windows phone nor do I own a tablet. Up for a new phone in Feb. so maybe I’ll try this out some day.

  • Souffrir

So whaddya think, $5 per character with four unlocked in basegame?

    • Johnathan Lenig-Lopez

2 in basegame, $10 for any character from a movie, $5 for anyone who hasn’t been.

  • samael789

Is there confirmation that it’s a fighting game-fighting game like Injustice for consoles? Or a card/swipe fighting game like Injustice for mobile?

  • MasterScrub

I try to be open minded when it comes to mobile games. But a fighting game? C’mon. That’s a terrible idea.

  • aizen310

    Nah…
If I want a good Marvel fighting game, I’ll stick to the Capcom ones.

    so exciting…

they aren’t making any console games due to what happened with activision screwing both them & high moon studios over with the dead pool game. There have been a ton of serious discussion among fan and some gamer news sites about marvel starting their own in house studio and publisher house for games so they ca make console titles ad other games with up & coming s dev studio they ca trust so they won’t be screwed over it’ll be kinda like what they are doing with their movies division examples

Curious- what do you mean by “Activision screwed them over”? Did Activision do some contract trickery, or do you mean “delivered a mediocre game”?

        • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

Here’s the article. Activision was primarily responsible for this games shortcoming(after
High Moons fantastic Transformers games) turns out right. A Former High Moon dev stated this:
          Quote:
Yup exactly. We had a couple of weeks where we crunched pretty aggressively on Deadpool. Having Activision cut and cut and CUT just took its toll on so many of us. For a studio to demand that we do
mandatory overtime for a project and then keep cutting so much time and money from it was ridiculous. At about halfway into development we were told that we weren’t even aiming very high in terms of score. Can you imagine working on a game where your higher ups say “yeah we’re
shooting for a 64 or lower” and then have them give you mandatory overtime? End quote From: http://www.examiner.com/article/ex-high-moon-studios-employee-on-deadpool-troubled-development

Since then marvel has been gun shy with console publishers cause what happen and the fact sega made poor titles as well with the exception of the captain America game yeah the latter were movie based but it made them scared this why people are suggesting they make their own in house publisher studio like they did for their movies division. examples

Man, that is skeevy. No wonder they’re holding on to their IP’s in that case. Just remembering Silicon Knights and X-Men Destiny or whatever that was called, I would be careful as well.

I wonder if a studio of their own would be a good move though? Considering that they have so many heroes and have released so many different games in different genres, one would wonder if one developer could handle it all.

          • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

well if they make a publisher house of games it won’t be just one studio, but many different ones for each genre .

Marvel already have gazillion who has the Now revamped marvel heroes 2015 & super hero Squad which answer directly to marvel permission wise for use of characters stories ETC.. Example: http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/08/04/marvel-heroes-wasnt-good-now-it-is-up-at-noon

Now as I said Joe mad ( Joe Madureira)who has worked for marvel as their artist i their books is still working with one half of the Dark Siders creators formerly known as Vigil they are now known as Airship Syndicate here a article: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/09/26/former-darksiders-developers-form-new-studio-airship-syndicate.aspx

Now the other half 0f the former Vigil studio’s Darksiders creators that was apart of crytek America for a bit, but was screwed over with no pay for weeks also formed their own studio they are known now as Gunfire Games: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/08/08/ex-vigil-games-founder-leaves-crytek-forms-new-studio.aspx & http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/08/08/vigil-games-core-team-reforms-again-as-gunfire-games/

Team Greg Rucka of Ar-k:http://www.siliconera.com/tag/ar-k/ up with Joe Madureira for the creative side of marvel’s games division to Rival Jim lee over at DC Games division. Let TQ Jefferson(Senor VP)handle the business side & the money there.

start of with these people and start have other new developing studio’s with devs ether marvel has known like finding the former high moon dev’;s if they made a new studio of their own yet or Anyone that is a dev that is creating a new studio and has been known for certain mastering a certain genre.

Most dev’s are contract workers til they make a studio of their own, find former Rockstar dev’s that have made Grand theft Auto for a toy box styled Punisher game for young adults & older since Disney infinity is for kids/ family’s .

Make a semi Arkham styled game from the people that made the captain America or Sleeping dog’s for a new Dare devil game ad have new version the captain America too.

RPG’s there are ton’s that have left both Bio ware & Obsidian ad they have made their own studio’s find or they haven’t still find them & have them make a studio so marvel ca have both X-men, Avengers Champion’s, Defenders, Fantastic four, Heroes for hire, Marvel knights & new warrior’s Games

They don’t all have to be the same studio this is what’s cool about being a publisher house for games. You can have many different studio’s that Specialize in just one or multiple genre of games all under your umbrella.

It’s not that different then what they are doing for their movies with differ director’s for each of their movies for certain characters or super hero team movies .

          • Göran Isacson

Man, you’ve really done a lot of reading and thinking about this. Big Marvel-fan, I take it? This system sounds like it could be pretty cool, even if they would probably have to separate it from the movie-verse someho as those games didn’t end up too hot. And I wonder how much money they’d be willing to pour into something that wasn’t related to the movies…

          • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

I’m a comic’s , Si -fi , Spy novels , anime and games fan. and lucky for Me I’m in school to be a dev . and have been a tester of games for a while. & yeah I had this idea for while. hmmm they can do a original story just for just the games or have it semi related to the comic’s universe like what marvel heroes is doing ad still do their own thing .

It shouldn’t be a problem Dc already did it with Arkham and DCUO . So alot is doable for them selves as well since they are already doing so with some stuff on their end they just need to expand more ad find the right people .

  • James Reilly

Sheesh….this makes even Marvel vs Capcom 3 look like the next best thing to sliced bread.

    • AkuLord3

Kinda sad, i dislike MvC3 but seeing this…i should have never doubted its greatness (oh Taskmaster, troll laugh this away~!)

  • Sol badass

Meanwhile marvel vs capcom 4 isnt being made

  • Johnathan Lenig-Lopez

Seriously, this looks like it could be fun, but why mobile? I just foresee 2 hours between matches, $10 for every character, 1 stage in the basegame with $5 for more, etc.

    • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

I don’t see exactly what Activision’s malpractices tell us about Disney/Marvel current or future videogame projects. Activision was licensing Marvel properties, that’s where their responsibility ends.

I think the whole ending of deals/contracts/licenses were more of a ‘cleaning the house’ move from Disney to start having full control over the properties they owned. A clean state to have all the properties under one (manageable) roof and start anew.

And that lead us to the most profitable way of taking advantage of Marvel: Films and merchandising. So they see videogames more as a way to leverage their brand, not as a standalone medium to take advantage. That’s why they aren’t making console games because mobile it’s where the biggest audience is.

        • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

well it’s not , Also most of their “Ios/mobile” games with the exception of spider man unlimited for the mobile /Ios scene have been lack luster both in review and fan reception . and while can say they can do both ( hopefully the make better ios/ . mobile games, but the likely hood isn’t too high. ) ether way more and more people are coming to the conclusion they should do what they did with their movie division ad make in house publisher/dev studio’s

Joe Mad is still working with the Darksiders creators or half of them they should start from there , Since when he’s not on video games he does the art for the comic’;s of marvel..

He’s the new Jim Lee(DC’s Vp head of video games ) only he worked for marvel . they eve use that writer for the ar-k games if marvel was smart he knows games as well

Also cause the the mobile scene has been scoring low /poorly where marvel concerned and a lot of people that have played most of them weren’t that happy with them only one game so far was actually good only one. it’s the spiderman unlimited one people want console and pc titles with marvel . ios/ mobile not to so much .

I think contest of champions will be fine. Well I’ll wait for reviews to be sure . But people want console titles & it’ll be a while before the revamped MH 2015(which is doing alot better since the revamp & fan feed back) reach’s those console’s; too.

      • Armageddon

        Deadpool was a good game.

        • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

it was an ok game but any one that played it could tell there was stuff that was unfinished/ polished. though there some reviewers and fan’s alike the the game still enjoyed still cause they could see the potential there they all said this.

And then most people found out about this just after Disney pulled all the marvel license’s from olie store etc. that was the reaso it happened. it’s like what happened to alpha protocol with obsidian under bad middle management at sega which this is the very same thing that happened

They both had a lot of potential to more the good they could have bee awesome. I’m one of those that Enjoyed Alpha protocol but it wasn’t fully finished.

The point is Disney pulled all Marvel titles out over this issue that’s the problem. .

  • Codename: D.A.V.I.D.

Cool for having Captain Marvel but…

Looks very clunky and limited, mechanics-wise, and the sound effects don’t do it any favour. I’ll pass even if it’s free.

  • Lester Paredes

I like the chunky, stylized, action figure looks of the characters. So that’s a positive. unfortunately, nothing else looks very interesting…

  • AkuLord3

Not sure why people think this game would be better on consoles…cuz then it be the same but on CONSOLES. Now if it was being made by a team who specialized in making fighters (insert whoever), then yeah but can’t be impressed by stuff i have seen done better with most of these characters…some MARVEL!

    • Dark Zerato

I think it would be better to play fighting game with a properly gamepad. Fighting using touch screen has never been a good choice.

      • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

That’s true but there’s a reason I’m featured In this article(I’m well informed) Dark Zerato. Here’s the reason. They stated “Blue tooth controller support”, & that mean’s this Examples : the es like nes30:http://epn.tv/all/spotlight/nes30-review/ the mfi Controller: http://epn.tv/tag/mfi-controller/ & also there’s this with Sony called xperia controller:http://epn.tv/all/type-of/news/sony-announces-new-xperia-smartphones-with-ps4-remote-play/ & then lastly there’s Xbox version called the “Moga Rebel controller,”
I’ll let you find that last one on your own. That you can use all for your IOS & Mobile devices . and they made for the controller most people prefer to use ad work better touch control swiping for games Now if only those kind of controller s will come down to a affordable price.
Some of them Right now are expensive then they should be. but that will some some of that issue but yes the reason for wanting this on consoles is understandable https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PzFc5zGMjCk

        • Dark Zerato

Can you carry one of these controller in your pocket ? I guess no. Mobile gaming shouldn’t need additional asset like this. It’s inconvenient to play this game when you go out.

          • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

The first two called the “nes30” & the “mfi Controller” can be put in your pocket easily. as you see via the links, I provided you up top. They are in video
The others like the “Sony Xperia” & “Xbox version Moga Rebel” well they need to be in a carry case to a degree or your back pack or where ever you like to keep it As victor Lucas of EPN.TV showed on his over all site/ tv show: http://epn.tv/all/spotlight/episode-118/ but with the latter ones they can fold up/retract when your not using them.

The real issue is Expense though.

    • Wiccan1109

I think a lot of marvel fans are just kind of wishing for a really killer marvel game on a big console. I mean they have solo titles and stuff that have their ups and downs but we havent had a full Avengers/X-Men/solo heroes thing on a console since Ultimate Alliance 2 and not many people were happy with that. When something like this comes out, the fact that consoles don’t have anything right now kinda stands out.

    • Johnathan Lenig-Lopez

I just don’t think fighting games work for mobiles, at least not as well as on consoles. Also fear they’ll overcharge for every tiny thing.

  • Kamen Rider Rayz

Marvel VS DC with Injustice Gods Among Us gameplay style for the next-gen consoles please, thank you.

  • Spirit Macardi

They have a trailer with Wolverine and Deadpool… And they DON’T get Steve Blum and Nolan North in to voice them for it?! D:<

  • MisterFive59

    So it’s like pokemon?

  • Ben Sylvia

Don’t forget Avengers Alliance. Fairly decent RPG gameplay in it. Excluding PvP. I don’t think they’ll ever get that right.

  • WhyWai

Guess how much they going to charge for Ironman?

  • Derek E Nay

Nice voice acting for a trailer. Almost as if there was nothing there. Oh wait…

    • Hunts Rattata

What’s weird is they could’ve cut out all the text except for the namedrops, and things probably would’ve worked better.
