Ni No Kuni II’s Kingdom Building Gives People More Reasons To Keep Exploring

Recommended Videos

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom follows he journey of a young, deposed king as he rises up from the ashes and attempts to both unify the world and defeat evil forces. A part of that journey involves creating an entirely new kingdom called Evermore. While the main focus is on adventuring and following the story, Evan eventually reaches a point where he is able to bring together the people of the world and build a place where maybe people can be peaceful and happy. For players, that means having an excuse to spend more time in the game’s world.

Once Evermore has been founded, Evan can manage his kingdom while he is in it or on his throne. There are 16 different kinds of facilities that can be built, each one offering some kind of bonus, increasing your influence, and making it possible to get Kingsguilders, acquire merchandise, and collect materials. All told, you can build a Barracks, Explorer’s Guild, Fresh Fish Market, General Store, Higglery, Hubble-Bubblery, Humble Bazaar, Hunting Lodge, Lumberyard, Mining Camp, Outfitter, Sleepy Ranch, Spellworks, Tasty’s Cookshop, Verdant Farm and Weapon Workshop, with personnel, research and level up options to make them better and more profitable.

It is the pursuit of a better kingdom, one with personnel best suited for various facilities and places that are their best, that can give Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom players more to do. Certain shops, like the General Store, require people with specific talents and skills. You need Kingsguilders to reinvest in properties to make them bigger and better. And Higgledies and your forces in Skirmishes will have a chance of doing better in battles with a Higglery or Barracks. And the key to a lot of this happening is time. Like many of mobile games, it takes minutes and hours for progress to be made in your kingdom. Spending Kingsguilders can speed up development a bit, but it can still take at least a half an hour for things to happen.

Part of this can be mitigated by using the teleport ability to constantly check back in on Evermore as you play. There are many places in Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom’s story where you will have time to quickly pop in, collect cash from the coffers, empty materials from storage, reassign staff, perform research, level up buildings, and then head back to adventuring. Most of the game’s chapters are rather substantial and fast travel spots are rather plentiful, so you can have every opportunity to visit again. But I feel like the recruiting element is even better about helping you kill time as Evermore grows.

There are so many possible citizens scattered around Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, and it is easy to get a sidequest and assign it as your current objective. In fact, the teleportation option makes it easy to see when you need to go somewhere for such an assignment, as there will be a notation. These people’s requests are always worthwhile, providing you someone who can help with Evermore and fill Evan’s ranks, while also sending you to a new place, giving you money, offering experience and providing some sort of item. Not to mention, carrying out their task may cause you to find items or treasure along the way and result in gaining levels that help prepare your team for future fights. These extra people are often quite personable and interesting, and it is very easy to get invested in chasing after more citizens for hours.

Which makes the whole idea of having to wait feel a little more natural and a little less frustrating. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is a game with a lot going on. Between the story, skirmishes and traveling, having a portion where you do just take a moment to pause, organize things, reap rewards and enjoy the time you spent gathering things is almost a relief. Especially when the character recruitment tied to it is also so enjoyable and fulfilling. It became something I looked forward to as I took small breaks from my regular journeys, as it helped me appreciate what was happening while Evan was off doing more important things.

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom will come to the PlayStation 4 and PC on March 23, 2018.
