Last week in Japan, Square Enix released Dragon Quest Builders 2, the sequel of the 2016 action RPG, for PS4 and Switch. Onimusha: Warlords, Katamari Damacy Reroll, and Super Neptunia RPG also released. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of December 17 to December 23, 2018.

 

The #1 spot of the week goes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the third week straight, and it continues to impress with an even stronger week with 452,617 units. Media Create’s trackers now have it at 2,079,769 units sold in Japan from retail alone.

 

Super Mario Party was a bigger surprise this week with 155,060 units sold to chart #2 after going #3 since practically late October. At this week’s #3 we have Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Let’s Go, Eevee! with 144,770 units sold for Switch.

 

At #4 and #5 we have Dragon Quest Builders 2 with 110,285 units sold on PS4 and 97,673 units sold on Switch. Its predecessor sold 319,385 units in its first week with 178,016 units from PS Vita and 141,369 units from PS4. The Switch version of Dragon Quest Builders released in March of this year and debuted with 28,430 units.

 

As for other new titles, Onimusha: Warlords opened with 21,384 units sold on PS4 to chart #13, Katamari Damacy Reroll sold 11,665 units in its debut to chart at #17, and lastly, Super Neptunia RPG launched with 11,521 units sold for PS4 in its opening week to chart #18.

 

In hardware sales, the PlayStation 4 continues selling well during the holidays with  57,948 units sold plus an additional 17,845 units of PS4 Pros to combine for 75,793 units sold in the week. The Nintendo Switch was again the best-selling console with 278,701 units sold to make up about 72.3% of all hardware sold in the week. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 6,672,014 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.
