Chocobo GP Switch Racing Game Announced for 2022

Square Enix is developing a new kart-style racing game for the Nintendo Switch called Chocobo GP. The game was revealed in the September 24, 2021 Nintendo Direct broadcast, but was hinted at by trademark filings from earlier in the year.

Chocobo GP appears to continue the legacy of 199’s Chocobo Racing by uniting a number of popular Final Fantasy characters under the banner of a race to the finish. A number of characters were featured in the trailer, including the classic chibi-style Chocobo, a moogle, a behemoth, a white mage, a black mage, Gilgamesh, Steiner from Final Fantasy IX, and more.

Chocobo GP players can acquire Magicite to cast spells on the course, use Drift Boost to get around corners faster, and customize their vehicles. Individual characters also have bespoke special abilities, like Gilgamesh littering the course with his many weapons. The game will support local and online play, as well as a 64-player tournament structure.

Chocobo GP is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch in 2022.
