Entering the .hack://G.U. world for the third time

Honesty time here, I played, but didn’t complete .hack://G.U. vol. 2. I had to start .hack://G.U, vol. 3 Redemption using a stock version of Haseo and company, something most of you probably won’t do. This will probably make my hands on experience with the build notably different from yours. On the plus side the first five minutes of Redemption sum up the events nicely! Since this is a third game in the series spoilers are bound to be revealed in the portion past the jump. I’ll keep them to a minimum, but if you don’t want to know anything you may not want to click on.

Reminisce leaves players on a nice cliffhanger and Redemption throws players back into the game without any tutorial missions. By now you should already have the .hack formula down. Set up parties, input keywords to make new dungeons, explore, kill monsters and then log off to read e-mail. The core game hasn’t changed much, which means anyone who has played any of the .hack games should be able to jump right into it.

After the events of .hack://G.U. volume 2, Haseo enters the Sigma server where an advanced Guild@Home is his new base. The first mission isn’t as epic as the opening movie sets it up to be, you need to Atoli and Silabus to find a grunty called Melo. However, you can’t simply track him down. You need to fetch three grunty tribe scents to draw him out. Along the way you are going to run into monsters. When you engage them a blue aura surrounds you and you are locked into combat. Haseo is a flexible character who can attack with two small swords (quick attack), a heavy sword (medium speed) and a large scythe (long range, medium speed). In battle you can switch between these weapons by using assigned skills. When you press the R1 button the action freezes and you can pick the Ghost Falcon attack to continue o use the twin blades or use the Reaper’s Dance special to make Haseo switch to the scythe.

Since my characters weren’t built up from hours of bonus dungeon grinding the first few battles took excessively long to complete. Haseo and the party just couldn’t do enough damage to put a dent into the Dust Goblins. Basic attacks dealt damage in the low 30s and each enemy had over 1,500 HP. If I had beefed up characters this wouldn’t be a problem, but I didn’t so I had to go make a new strategy. The more powerful skill arts drained tons of BP, which didn’t leave much leftover to do Rengeki finishing moves. Instead I switched Haseo’s skill arts to the less costly specials, which mean he could use them more often to boost up his morale and then unleash an avatar awakening to deal heavy damage. The Rengeki bonus serves another purpose, extra experience points to quickly catch the characters up in levels. Haseo also gains virus cores when he does the Avatar Awakening to power up his lost weapon, the Tickling Death scythe. This has been the fastest way to bring Haseo up to speed and thankfully CyberConnect2 has an option to skip the awakening animation. Later the in the game Haseo gets more avatars other and hopefully more animations with them.

With three games in the .hack://G.U. linage there isn’t anything I’ve encountered in .hack://G.U. vol. 3 that makes the game a breakthrough compared to the previous two. However, it doesn’t need to be. As the final extension of the trilogy anyone who spent time with the first two are going to pick this up to see how the story ends. Slight spoiler .hack://G.U. vol. 3 has multiple endings, a reward for long time followers.
