How to Cook in Tears of the Kingdom

Right away on Great Sky Island, you’ll be able to start to cook in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Just letting some food drop near a fire can work, if you’re okay with baked apples, seared steak, and toasty skyshroom. But you’ll really benefit from cooking an actual meal, and that involves knowing how to start a fire and use the pots you’ll find around the world.

Initially, you’ll have it pretty easy! I found a few pots with fires already started or campfires near friendly and unfriendly Constructs. When you’re just starting out and probably have some skyshrooms and apples, you don’t need to worry too much. Just approach the pot, open your menu with the + sign, and head to the Materials page. You can then highlight the things you want to cook and press A on them to choose “select for recipe” to begin making a meal in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. After all, an apple and skyshroom together nets you a Fruit and Mushroom Mix that can heal one and a half hearts. I’ve found that’s a big deal when you only have three.

However, when you’re heading to the Gutanbac Shrine, you’ll learn the next helpful part of cooking in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: starting a fire. The Ranger Construct will teach you about using a flint to start a fire at a pot, and two will be nearby. I recommend grabbing one and adding it to your inventory before testing this out. Once you do, use your weapon to strike the one on the ground next to the pot. It will start a fire, and you can then begin cooking.

Finally, here are a handful of early recipes you can cook on Great Sky Island that I recommend:

  • Energizing Cooked Stambulb: two stambulbs for two hearts and a third of the stamina wheel.
  • Energizing Steamed Fruit: one stambulb and one apple for five hearts and a fourth of the stamina wheel.
  • Fish and Mushroom Skewer: one ancient arowana and one skyshroom for two and a half hearts.
  • Fruit and Mushroom Mix: one skyshroom and one apple for one and a half hearts.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available for the Nintendo Switch.
