Fans of the Monogatari Series and Japanese supernatural literature may be interested in the latest Humble Book Bundle. Formally titled the “Monogatari Returns” Bundle, the pay-what-you-want collection includes more than its title suggests. If anything, it might be considered the Humble Nisioisin Bundle since it carries many Nisioisin works besides Monogatari titles.
For those unfamiliar with the Humble Bundle System, the website allows customers to pay any amount from USD $1 and up to claim a minimum selection from the bundle. More items are “unlocked” as customers raise their final price. In the Humble Monogatari Returns bundle, the minimum price to unlock all 44 books is about USD $30. That price is split between Humble, the bundle partner (in this case publisher Kodansha Books), and a featured charity. Sliders can be used to determine the split between Humble, the charity, and the company partner. In July 2021 Humble adjusted its sliders to guarantee that at least 15% of the purchase price went to Humble itself.
The Humble Monogatari Returns bundle is partnered with Binc, the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. Binc is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to helping bookstore employees in need. It was originally founded as the “Borders Group Foundation,” and funded by employees of Borders Group, Inc. Following the bankruptcy and liquidation of Borders, the organization took on the Binc name and expanded its scope. Now it assists any qualifying employee or owner of a brick-and-mortar bookstore or comic shop in the United States.
As for what customers get out of the bundle, it’s a fair amount. Check below for a listing of included works by tier. Each higher tier includes the works below it. As prices can change based on the region of the customer, we’ll refer to each tier by the number of works included, rather than specific dollar thresholds. Unless specified otherwise, all items in the Humble Monogatari Returns bundle are classified as light novels.
