Apart from console games and publishing Marvel Comics, Atlus Japan used to make a chunk of change from sticker photo machines or “purikura” in Japanese. They left the business in April, but haven’t forgotten their sticker picture roots.
According to the ESRB, Atlus USA is publishing a “game” called Photoworld for the Nintendo DSi where players use the camera to take pictures which they can customize with stamps and effects. Sounds a lot like DSiWare purikura.
Wait, Atlus already developed a print club program for DSiWare and Nintendo of America published it under the name Sparkle Snapshots in November. PhotoWorld is going to be a direct competitor. Perhaps, Atlus can capitalize on their North American fanbase by throwing in Persona frames and Amazing Tater stamps. Would you buy a DSiWare game that lets you take a picture with Jack Frost?
