Keeping Track of Licensed Tamagotchi Models with Anime Characters

Licensed Tamagotchis are a shockingly big deal, with many featuring characters from anime series. So much so that even back in 1998, Bandai released a classic model based on Doraemon. Now that there’s a resurgence in the virtual pet’s popularity, as well as a Nano model that is easy to customize and Smart option with TamaSma Cards to add new characters, we’re seeing a lot more of them. Even overseas, they’re appearing. So, to help people keep track or perhaps even find a new digital companion, here’s the full list of models available so far.

Tamagotchi Nano Models That Let You Raise Anime Characters

Okay, these are the straightforward ones. Tamagotchi Nano models are small, in black-and-white, and are simple ones that only involve feeding, games, and occasionally checking in to ward off bad guys. I’ll note in the list if you can get them outside Japan.

  • Doraemon Tamagotchi: A classic Tamagotchi only available in Japan, though it did reappear after its 1998 debut in 2006. You can raise Doraemon and Dorami.
  • Evangelion Tamagotchi: A Tamagotchi Nano available in multiple varieties worldwide. It lets you raise Angels from the series.
  • Demon Slayer Tamagotchi: Another Tamagotchi Nano, it lets you raise a generic character into Tanjiro or his friends or one of the Hashira. It is available worldwide.
  • Detective Conan (Case Closed): While this is part of the Tamagotchi Nano line, it is also the first one in the new Colorful series that has a color screen. In addition to raising Conan Edogawa, you can end up seeing other characters from the series by doing well.
  • Jujutsu Kaisen Tamagotchi: You raise Yuji or one of the other Jujutsu Sorcerers in this Tamagotchi Nano. Like the other recent anime ones, it is available worldwide.
  • One Piece Tamagotchi: This model Tamagotchi Nano is about to debut in Japan. In it, owners care for Tony Tony Chopper.
  • Spy x Family Tamagotchi: In this Tamagotchi Nano, which will eventually appear worldwide, you raise Anya Forger.
  • Tokyo Revengers Tamagotchi: This is another 2023 Tamagotchi Nano heading to Japan. Like the Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen versions, you get to raise characters from the series.
  • Touken Ranbu Tamagotchi: This Tamagotchi Nano is only available in Japan! Though you start out with Konnosuke, you eventually get to raise one of the Sword Boys.

Tamagotchi Smart TamaSma Cards That Add Anime Characters

So the Tamagotchi Smart is unusual! It’s basically like a smart watch, and you can insert little memory cards called TamaSma Cards that allow you to get certain character evolutions based on themes or series when their data is loaded. There are three cards that are anime-like so far. This virtual pet model and its cards are only available in Japan.

  • One Piece Friends: This TamaSma Card involves regular Tamagotchi icons dressed in costumes inspired by characters from the series like Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Sanji, and Robin.
  • Pixar Friends: This TamaSma Card lets you get classic Tamagotchi characters in outfits inspired by movies like Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Toy Story

Tamagotchis That Aren’t Necessarily Based on Anime Series, but Involve Characters That Appeared in Anime Adaptations

There are some licensed Tamagotchi models that are “close” enough to having anime characters that it’s probably best to include them too. Like there’s a Pokemon anime adaptation, after all. Also, Toy Story is an animated film.

  • Fate/Extella Tamagotchi: Okay, this was a Japan-exclusive, Fate/Extella limited edition virtual pet. As you’d expect from a Fate model, you raise Servants.
  • Hello Kitty Tamagotchi Nano and Uni: Both of these models involve Hello Kitty or raising characters based on other Sanrio mascots. They appeared worldwide in 2024.
  • Kamen Rider Tamagotchi: This Tamagotchi Nano lets you raise various Riders from the series. It appeared outside Japan too.
  • Mothra Tamagotchi: This was a late 1990s standard model Tamagotchi. In it, you’d raise Mothra from Godzilla.
  • Pokemon Eevee Tamagotchi: This is a Japan-exclusive Tamagotchi Nano that lets you raise an Eevee into one of its evolutions.
  • Toy Story Tamagotchi: People can care for Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and other characters from the series. This Nano variant is available worldwide.
  • Twisted Wonderland Tamagotchi: In this Japan-only Nano model, you raise the bishonen based on Disney movie villains.

Tamagotchis can be found worldwide via various storefronts.
