Masahiro Sakurai Talks Scrapped Minecraft Ideas From Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Masahiro Sakurai talked about some behind-the-scenes work on bringing Minecraft to Super Smash Bros Ultimate in his latest Famitsu magazine column. Some scrapped ideas included plans to bring stages created through Minecraft as edits for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.[Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]

While Super Smash Bros Ultimate ended up having a neat stage select feature that allows players to choose Minecraft stage biomes, Masahiro Sakurai originally had plans to do more. Here are some highlights from the magazine:

• “We went to Microsoft to present the idea. They were very pleased.”
• “We were looking for a way to make edits based on stages made on Minecraft then into Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but unfortunately, we quickly gave up on it. As expected, it was a bit too much.”
• “The music production was the toughest time we faced out of all Smash Bros production. We couldn’t use some songs from the original work due to various reasons!”
• “There were a few tracks that we abandoned in the middle of the arrangement. In the end, I think we were able to compromise on something good without losing the mood, thanks to the hard work of the musicians.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available for the Nintendo Switch. The game’s Ver. 9.0.0 update released earlier this month, alongside the Challenger Pack 7: Steve & Alex.
