Pokémon Iono

Meet Iono, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Electric Gym Leader

The Pokémon Company introduced fans to a new gym leader from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Iono, in its latest trailer. Iono is the leader of one of the Pokémon Trainer Gyms in the Paldea region and specializes in using Electric-type Pokémon.

Check out her video below. In it, Iono challenges her viewers to guess her partner Pokémon.

The video takes the form of a pre-rendered presentation featuring Iono rendered in 3D and presenting an online video. Iono’s show is called The Iono Zone, and she bills herself as a streamer and influencer in addition to Leader of Levinicia Gym. With hair in pink and blue, she wears colored Magnemite-like hair accessories. Her latest Iono Zone video has her interacting with the chat, challenging viewers to guess her partner Pokémon. In keeping with her brand, it’s an Electric-type Pokémon. She describes it as “squishy” and “easygoing”, with bumps on its head that people mistake for eyes. It also generates electricity in its belly by expanding and contracting. Unfortunately for the curious, Iono saves the reveal for her next episode, whenever that will be.

Like many series characters, Iono is the English-localized name of the character. In Japanese, Iono is called “Nanjamo (ナンジャモ)”. Both names, however, are used as puns, with Iono being a pun for “I don’t know”, and Nanjamo being an idiosyncratic way of saying “Nothing!”

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet launch on November 18, 2022, for the Nintendo Switch. Check out a more detailed trailer showing off the game’s flow.
