Those of you still on the fence about buying Splatoon 2 should definitely look into the game’s new multiplayer co-op horde mode called “Salmon Run” that was showcased at E3 2017.

This was one of the reveals that didn’t get too much attention, but it certainly fills a gap from the original Splatoon, which offered players a single-player campaign and competitive multiplayer, but nothing on the cooperative front. With Salmon Run being introduced to Splatoon 2, it changes everything, especially for those who aren’t too interested in the competitive aspect of Splatoon.

The above demonstration was shown during a Nintendo Treehouse live stream at E3 2017, where they shared the basics on the new mode that can be played with parties of two to four players.

In Salmon Run, players will team up to take on waves of attacking salmon creatures. There are other objectives such as taking on bosses that appear to take golden eggs from them that you’ll need to clear the stage. Cooperating is a big part of the game, and it’s different in online and offline modes. The online version of the mode will have special timed events that will have you choose from a given set of weapons for the party. In the offline mode, you’ll get select any weapon while working with friends.

The first bit we see in the live stream is a difficulty “hazard level” at 10%, which is followed by some footage of 30% difficulty. Players will get to make adjustments according to how they see fit, and the higher the difficulty the more you’ll be rewarded with money to purchase equipment. Best part of it all, Salmon Run will come with exclusive loot that you can only score from playing the mode.

Splatoon 2 releases on July 21, 2017 for Nintendo Switch.
