VC Monday: Kirby’s first 3D adventure, and a psychotic shmup

Well, it's Monday, and you know what that means. Two more classic games hit the Virtual Console here in the US. This week we have the pink puffball Kirby's first 3D adventure, and a shmup from the TG-16. First up we have Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.  Players control Kirby as he endeavors to find all 100 shards of the great Crystal. Kirby 64 has some pretty neat features, most notably the ability for Kirby to combine two powers into one. Players can also play as King DeDeDe in multiplayer mode, as well as Waddle Dee, Kirby and Adeleine. The main problem with Kirby 64 is that it's slow. Far slower paced than even Kirby's Dream Land 3. Still, it's a fairly good game, even if it's not on the level of other Kirby platformers. Lastly we have Psychosis for the Turbografx-16. Now, before you say "oh, just another TG-16 shooter", let me say that Psychosis has one of the best stories I've ever seen in a shmup. I won't spoil anything, but I will say that it's quite good. As far as gameplay goes, Psychosis is pretty fun. It looks and sounds pretty nice, too.

Overall this week is fairly so-so. Not much else to say about it. Nothing that personally interests me that much, but fans of Kirby will likely want to check out Kirby 64. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be over here, waiting for Earthbound!

(Come on, you knew it was coming.)
